He hadn't been paying attention to where his feet were landing and that was his first mistake

His second mistake, closely following the first mistake, was that as a result of not watching where his feet were going he somehow managed to get himself entangled in a particularly twisty bit of mud and tree branches, the twigs catching at his legs and making it so that he pitched forward headfirst.

As he was falling he thought to himself that he really ought to have looked more closely as to where he was going and that this was probably going to hurt.

(It did.)

He lay there after the initial shell-shock of the fall, his head aching. Something was jabbing into his flank, and he squirmed a bit, trying to dislodge whatever it was, but to no avail. After a while he gave up and simply lay there, wondering how long it would be before he would be able to get up again.

User ImageFirst Breath was enjoying the sun's rays. Her garden was basking in the light. She lay on the baking earth and did the same. She wasn't sure how long it had been when she heard a thump come from outside the reaches of the light. Squinting, she peered into the shadows at the edges of her sanctuary. First Breath's eyes took a moment to a moment to adjust. In the meantime, her ears were busy picking up the sounds of rustling. Cautiously, she approached the edge of her garden. She could see some movement farther into the woods. She was unsure whether or not to approach, but the thought that a creature might be in trouble propelled the doe hesitantly forward.
As she came upon the origin of the noise, she found not a wounded animal, but a very large buck. First Breath paused in surprise but quickly, she found her wits enough to ask the buck if he was alright. "Are you injured?"

He had lain there for perhaps ten minutes or so (or maybe it was an hour, he had lost since of time) before he heard footsteps approaching. One of his ears twitched, flicking a little in the direction of the sound before he heard a voice coming from somewhere to his left. Mighty strained his neck, trying to see, and caught sight of a doe a short distance away.

He kicked out one leg experimentally, made a soft snort of pain, and said, "I think I've cut my leg, but otherwise I'm okay."

Hearing the buck's snort of pain, First Breath called to him, "Wait just a moment. I'll be right back." She quickly hurried back to her garden in search of some medicinal herbs. She gathered what she needed and hurried back to the injured buck.

Kneeling beside him, she placed the assortment of herbs beside her. Looking him over, she located the source of his injury. "This might hurt a little, don't struggle." She set to work packing his injury with her medicines and sealing the injury with moss. It wasn't a serious wound and she was positive it would heal quickly. "All done. Can you stand?" At this point, First Breath stood up and shifted nervously. She hoped she hadn't caused him too much pain. That was her least favorite aspect of her chosen path.

He wished, not for the first time, that his terribly embarrassing predicament had not happened in the first place. Having to be tended to by a doe when it should have been him taking care of her was how things were supposed to have gone, after all.

Mighty Victor flinched a little, his back legs kicking out slightly as she worked. When she was finished, he pushed himself unsteadily to his feet, swaying slightly, but at least it seemed as though he was able to put a little weight on it. "I do apologize," he said, ducking his head shamefully. "This is quite terrible, I shouldn't have to have asked such a lovely doe for assistance. You're very kind."

He took one step and promptly fell over again. Apparently he wasn't as strong as he thought he was.

First Breath listened as the buck apologized for being injured and for asking her help. Really? That was just silly. She was a healer and he didn't ask she just helped. That is what she does. She opened her mouth to tell him just that when she noticed how unsteady he was. Then her fell over. "Oh!" A gasp escaped her lips and she hurried over to the buck's side. "Let me help you." She helped him up, taking on a great deal of his weight. "Let's just move you to my garden. It's just past those trees." Her head nodded in the direction of her home. "Now, I just want to say, there is no need to apologize. I am a healer and I love what I do. Also, you didn't ask for my help, I gave it willingly." Now that she had that cleared up, she fell back into her role as a healer. "You'll need to rest for a while. Until I say you're ready to leave, you are in my care." She looked at him, frowning a little. "Behave yourself and be a good patient." Suddenly, she smiled at the buck. "I forgot to introduce myself. My name is First Breath. And you are?"

He gave the doe a wan smile, trying to be valiant about the whole thing - but it was difficult to be valiant when one was limping alongside of someone after having fallen so embarrassingly not five minutes before. He tilted his head downwards in a half sort of bow.

"Mighty Victor is my name," he said. "Not a very apt name, at the moment, but still a good name, if I do say so myself."

He twisted his neck around to look at her again. "I do appreciate your help a great deal."
