Common Sayings

The drow of the Underhollow recognize several important historical figures whose deeds and wisdom are often spoken of. The most quotable is Iraenil Do'ate, the leader of the original tribe that settled and founded the City of Embers. Regarded as a cultural hero, he is known for his fairness and wisdom.

Unfortunately, over the years, several misattributed and misunderstood quotes have become commonly attributed to this ancient hero, despite historians' best efforts to the contrary. These days, it's a bit difficult for the commonplace drow to know the difference. Among the many bits of wisdom and advice commonly bandied about in Do'ate's name are these:


  • Be careful what you wish for. The gods may just grant it, and they have a twisted sense of humor. (contributed by Kalietha)
  • Fear.. An emotion that can save you or kill you. What you do with it is up to you. (Contributed by Cheyriddle4)

  • You may only truly discover yourself in the face of others, but you may not like what you find.(Contributed by Zight)
  • No matter what hardships you may face in life, never forget that special someone whom you cherish above all others; the apple of your pie. (Contributed by Zight)
