Diya'ali was terrified. While he was a physically strong lion, he was not exactly familiar with the ways of fighting. He had trained, of course he had, but he still ran a distinct possibility of getting his backside handed to him in the challenge. But there was no backing out now, not that his fragile pride would allow him to, nor did he want to. This would be his home. He would prove his worth to all who had doubted him (which, in reality, there was none who doubted him), and he would make his place in the new pride. Far, far away from the pressures of his old home. There was no requirement to find a female he could stand, or make a family if he didn't want to.

He could make a difference, without making a litter.

His claws dug into the dirt beneath him and he waited, on edge, for the challenge to start.

He had spent the last several moons away from the challenge areas. Mostly going out on viking trips or such. Bousvor thought it was because he's trounced too many applicants. The pride did need new blood after all. But now the tawny, green-eyed lion was back. He relaxed with a couple of other reavers that were assigned for challenges that day.

Spotting the new challenger first, Bousvor heaved himself to his feet to claim him. It would be good to get back into the swing of things. He flexed his claws into the dirt then strode forward. Without taking his eyes off the black (or was it blue?) lion, he slowly nodded for the match to start. A lion without many words. Bousvor knew only actions could prove this lion worthy.

When the brown male approached, Diya expected a conversation to ensue. Everyone was so talkative. Instead, the male surprised him with a simple nod. The battle would start without a single word spoken. That suited Diya fine, as he was afraid that perhaps his voice would crack with the nerves that coursed through his veins. Perhaps he was not ready for this, but he was here now. There was not backing down.

Diya returned the nod, and stepped forward, eyes narrowing in contemplation. He leapt towards him, with little consideration of where the blow would land, but aiming for the vulnerable flank of the lion before him.

So it began with nods. Bousvor grinned to himself. He was hoping for a lively match. Even as his opponent stepped forward, he was moving to the side. He slithered out from under the attack easily. This lion was lacking something; he felt he could sense it. Conviction perhaps? It would tell in the rest of the duel.

The male tensed for his own counter-attack. His muscles rippling under his coat. He made a precise attack. Aiming for his opponents face. He had his claws sheathed, well mostly, as he really didn't want to blind the lion.

The hit to the face caught him by surprise, though if Diya was honest, he was stunned that the male evaded his attack so cleanly and easily. Not that Diya was a good fighter, but he was ok. It was only as the paw came towards him, thankfully claws sheathed, that it dawned on Diya that he was battling an actual warrior not just another rogue who knew how to throw a couple of blows to make for a bit of rough-housing.

The attack made a solid connection, sending Diya stumbling back, head snapping to the side from the force, and leaving his body open to attack as he tried to regain his rattled brains.

I'm so sorry about the wait! >.< My soa muses ditched me.

His blow struck clean. Bousvor was glad he'd decided to sheath his claws for that one. The force that sent the male stumbling back also knocked him a bit off balance. He skipped a few steps around to regain balance and re-position himself.

This male didn't have his heart into it. "Focus!" He hissed as he swiped at the male's flanks. This time with claws out. A little pain might show him this was real. Bousvor didn't usually try to help a challenger in a fight. If the male lost, and chose to come back, he wanted the lion truly ready.

He heard the males call and growled a little. "I am!" he yelled back, but the claws digging into his flank caused his yell to end on a yelp. Right! He was getting annoyed now! He growled low in his throat and threw his own blow towards the male - perhaps too little, too late - but his aim was directly at the male's flank, claws extended and all his power behind the blow.

Unfortunately, that left him a little unbalanced, due to all his force being placed into his attack.

This lion thought he was, but he only had flowers in his blood. Bousvor doubted the challenger had what it would take to win this fight now, but he'd give him the chance. He could still turn it around. The tawny male felt the claws scrape through his fur. It caused a few scratches. Nothing he would really worry about right now.

He lowered his head and swung around. Trying to headbutt the other male in the side of his ribs. He could end this quickly if he could get the other off his feet.

The headbutt legitimately took Diya by surprise. He was not used to that style of fighting, he only really used his claws. He was not too big a lion, so he had never thought to throw his size around, mostly because he was pretty sure it would be ineffective against all but the tiniest of lions.

His competitor's blow hit solidly, once again, and Diya almost screamed with frustration. Come on! He stumbled, wind knocked from his lungs abruptly, and for a moment he retained his footing, keeping a firm grasp on the ground with his claws, but as he went to draw a breath, his lungs spasmed, protesting the harsh blow that they had just received. Spots danced in his eyes, and he stumbled, hitting the ground hard. The force of the ground knocked the air back into his lungs and he gasped.

Heavens damn it, but he couldn't help but feel he'd lost...and rather miserably at that.

It was a solid blow. He felt it in his neck and shoulders, then the male stumbled away. Bousvor eyed him critically. Was it over? Did he still have some fight? Or would he take his wounds and go so he could try again later?

"Do you yield?" It was an offer to let the other lion bow out gracefully. He wasn't one to smack a lion when he was down. Unless he really wanted it of course. Knowing you were losing, it was better to stop early than risk more injuries that could take longer to heal. Bousvor waited, but remained wary.

Are you still happy for Diya to re-challenge Bousvor? c:

He rose to his paws slowly, lethargically, his muscles protesting. He wasn't exhausted - no, far from it, but his body was not impressed with him - and he had a feeling neither was the lion before him. For a moment, he contemplated attacking again, keeping the fight going but he knew he had lost. Why would he continue?

"I yield," Diya said respectfully, though the anger inside him boiled. Not at the male, but at himself. "This is not over though," he insisted. "I will be back, and I will try again."

He would be stronger next time. He had to be.

Absolutely!

So this lion wasn't completely foolhardy. He knew when the battle had been lost. Bousvor gave a respectful dip of his head. "Train well. Return when you are ready." He had a feeling this lion would do much better his next time. Now he had a purpose, a will to win.
