As darkness crept in, so did the tide. Abandon stood amongst the reaching mangrove roots, watching the water rise from hoof-deep to his shins, occasionally shifting his weight and splashing a little in the process. He could see the little shadows waver near the flooded mud, but it wasn't quite high enough for his liking yet.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.It didn't matter what time of day it was; it was always a struggle for her skin to sit right on her body. Sometimes she felt like tearing off with a scream and other times she wanted to wrap it tighter around herself. That's why she walked. She walked and she walked because if she just kept moving, she didn't have to let herself think so long as she studied her surroundings. There were days where she felt fine and she could smile, other times it hurt her to even try. She had to try again and again until it fit right so that she could face other kin.

That's why she didn't say anything when she came upon the buck standing in the water. She couldn't even though she wanted to ask what he was doing.

The tide was coming in.

You probably get a notice even without this quote... but just in case...

He heard the slight rustle of steps that sounded a little like it came from a larger critter, but hadn't bothered to look. "If you say hello, I'll say hello. If you keep watching, you're just creepy." Abandon advised from his position, eyes straining as the light continued fading. If nothing answers - well, then it wasn't anything.

Amorpheous
I don't actually, I must've disabled it at some point. Quoting is good! 8D

"Hello," she said softly. Her voice had little inflection; she had only spoke because he had asked her to. She eyed the water that was rising, little by little. The light faded just the same. Here in the mangroves the water crept in, reaching out clutch the unfortunate. Or the ones who had reached the end before the end, who breathed without feeling the air fill their lungs.

Maxx D
I usually quote regardless, but I accidentally submitted without quoting and wasn't sure if I should have double noted you. xD

"Hah, there's someone after all," he noted, slightly triumphant. Grandma would be proud, or so he thought. "Hello. Come here and see the crabs, if you want to. They're coming out to the water."

"The tide is coming in," but the way she said it betrayed no concern. She merely pulled away from the shadows of the mangrove and the brush, slipping into the water with a small splash. She watched the water lapping at her knees for a brief moment before looking up at the buck, catching her first good glimpse of him in the dying sunlight.

She was so tired.

He finally looked at her as she settled closer. "I can see that," a slight hint of an eyeroll, but more befuddled than scornful. He waded over to her and kicked a hoof briefly, and a passing shadow swam away anxiously. "And that's when we catch the crabs, if you want to."

Her smile was a touch self-deprecating, though it probably didn't come across in shadows, when she replied with a simple, "I know."

She give a toss of her head and shrugged a shoulder, a placid, but earnest look settling on her face. "I've never caught a crab before; I'll stay if you're willing to teach me how."

When she attempted another smile, it came easier and she didn't give into the urge to sigh.

"You do what you want, I'm not asking you to stay," it was not unkind, though brisk. "I won't take responsibility for you if you drown. Me, I just dive and try to feel the currents from where the crabs are going - then SNAP! Bite them." The last lingering rays highlighted his jaw in a brief maniacal grin before he dipped his head into the water, now slightly above knee-deep, and stayed down for a while.

She laughed softly, her eyes glowing pale in the creeping darkness. "I'm not afraid of drowning."

She smiled then, a real smile. She took a breath, turning her smile ragged with shadows and teeth, before following suit, head in the water. Her eyes were closed as she felt the water moving around her head, magnifying the sound of the rush of blood in her ears.

It would've been a curious sight, had anyone else been there, a couple of Kin with their heads buried in water like cranes. The buck's head came up first, and he spit out a piece of bark that had drifted by on its way. He watched the shadows of her neck and her head bob slightly before nudging her, a query of how it was going. The water had risen enough to touch his stomach now, and he hoped it wouldn't be long before it got higher.

To say that she was seriously trying to catch a crab would be false. This first submersion of her head under water froze her into a state of such terrible calm that she could do nothing but listen to the blood in her ears and the passing of water. It was only when he nudged her that she instinctively snapped her teeth, trying to catch something. She surfaced with a low intake of breath, water tumbling from her mouth.

Her hair had slipped forward, pressed flat with water against her forehead and over her eyes. She stared at him, ostensibly to see if he had been successful, but actually because he was a buck standing in water that had risen to his stomach and up her shoulder.

Maxx D
I wanted her to say something... but I couldn't think of anything.
She's in a bit of a slump in this rp... she can be a lot more lively... >___>

"When it gets higher there'll be more," he said, a tone decidedly factual but ambiguously comforting. "Might get up to your chin though. Would you like that?" He leaned over to nudge the locks aside - swamp water was no good in the eyes.

Amorpheous
Aw, she does what she wants. lol Abandon will talk to her a bit.

She closed her eyes when he leaned over, keeping still and letting him push her hair aside. She opened them again with the water dripping down the side of her face rather than into her eyes.

She nodded, smile starting on her face, "I wouldn't have stayed if the water bothered me."

"Do you like the water creeping up your neck?"

Maxx D
That she does. >u<

"Good," he opined. "I was worried you didn't have a mind of your own. The water is great," Abandon regarded the reaching dark waves with approval, wading about with a shudder, "it has a mind of its own. When it's all up to here, it's - it's raw. Just a kind of primal struggle. Magnificent stuff. And the crabs just float along."

His muzzle reached out to her and stopped as he located her in the dark once more. "You'd be underwater by then though. Hope you can swim." He laughed, and it was not apparent whether the remark was humourous, but he'd said it all the same.
