The water rippled under her hooves again as her mind wasn't quite as clear as she wanted it to be. Yuuka inwardly sighed, focusing on not thinking. On clearing her mind. To not focus on the images that flashed across her mind. They were unneeded and not something she could ever change. There was no point in dwelling over the loss. Yes it hurt and she would feel that emptiness inside for a long while. But that had been when she was younger! Not today or yesterday.

Low rumbling could be heard. She'd noted the way the air felt heavy and the scent of rain. A storm was coming. Opening her eyes and glancing towards the sky, the uni-kirin mare frowned. And the water she stood upon rippled again. She was losing her concentration. If the elder of her foster herd had been there, he'd probably have whacked her with his tail by now and she'd most likely be soaking wet.

Ears flattening at the thought, Yuuka closed her eyes again to try and find that peaceful state she was seeking. There wasn't as much time left to try and find it unless she wanted to get stuck in the storm. But a few more minutes should suffice.

The sky was filled with a dark promise. Artaxes paused, glancing up at the heavy gray clouds and breathed in the thick, heavy air. There was a charge to the cloud-shadowed world. It was waiting for the storm to break. The stallion smiled faintly, and pressed on. It would be unwise to allow himself to be caught out without any shelter from the storm, regardless of his feelings on the force of nature. He could not be killed in an accident, not now. There was too much to be done for him to succumb to something trivial and meaningless like that.

A faint limp was evident, the stubborn pain growing worse the longer he walked, but Artaxes was not one to yield. It hurt, but here was not a place for him to stop and rest. Pushing the injury too far would not be a good idea either, and he was fairly certain it had not yet reached that point. His back leg had been mauled before he left, but it was not broken and had been mending well enough, if slowly. The ache was a complaint brought on by walking too long. It was not a sign that the limb was broken, just a suggestion that he should allow it rest sooner rather than later.

His eye was caught by a flash of pink in the dim, gray-tinged world. He turned, too quickly, to look at it, and chided himself for his childish reaction. He knew full well it would not be who his reflexive thoughts had suggested it might be. Still, it was a pink unicorn. And she appeared to be doing something most unusual. Intrigued, Artaxes moved closer, peering curiously at her hooves. As he stood on the shore, it was apparent beyond all doubt that the stranger was standing on the surface of the lake, water rippling around her cloven hooves. The stallion watched, trying to determine how a unicorn was managing such a trick, but he held his tongue. There was no need to immediately disturb her, and he imagined preforming such a feat likely took a great deal of focus. Why shatter her concentration on a whim, especially when a bit of patience would serve just as well?

The wind started to pull a little more roughly at her mane as she stood quietly, focusing on the feel of the water ripples under her hooves, the sound of the thunder above her head, and the weight that hung over the area. Her hide prickled, an awareness slowly ebbing into her mind. She ignored it to a degree, finally finding that peacefulness she had needed. Her mind felt cleared and not as heavy with thoughts that would do her no good. Breathing in deeply, as the mare exhaled, the stillness she'd held until then faded away, pale pink eyes opening slowly. A brief glanced was tossed towards the sky before she allowed her attention to fall on the new visitor that she had sensed.

Moving with schooled grace, Yuuka began walking along the water slowly, taking the time to look the stallion over. He was large and had powerful wings. Yet he had a horn, like her own! Perhaps he was a unicorn of some sort? A hybrid like herself? She held her questions at bay, reaching the shoreline a couple soquili lengths away from the stallion. Yuuka took a moment to allow herself to shake off the last residual of too relaxed muscles before she turned towards the stranger. "Forgive me for not acknowledging you right away." She spoke quietly. "My meditation skills are still novice at best currently." As her elder would tell her. She was getting much better at it. And the fact she could walk across the water attested to this!

With a practiced eye, the pink mare discerned that the stallion seemed to be favoring one leg. She said nothing of it, merely noting it and filing it away to look into later. His coloring did not seem to resemble any of those she'd seen among the herd she belonged nor could she recall ever seeing one such as this stallion visit. They were a tiny herd so it was fairly simple to keep track of visitors and family members. Which intrigued the mare. Where had the stallion come from? None of which she voiced, merely studying the stallion in silence.

Artaxes watched her as she approached, not bothering to hide his curiosity at the way she walked across the lake's surface. It did not show well, emotions seldom did with him, but he did not consciously hide most of them, simply a good habit. If no one knew what he was thinking, then they could never use the knowledge against him. “It would be fair foolish to be offended by something like that,” Artaxes snorted. “In that case I should have said something when I got here, but I didn't want to disturb you. You seemed... busy.” Meditation was it? Unless there was something else at play here, it was the most extreme demonstration of meditation he had ever seen. Still, now that she was closer it was clear that the marks on her back were scales, and not a pattern of fur or something she wore. So she was not an unicorn, or at least not purely. He did not know as much of the other breeds as he would have liked, most of what he had been taught involved their supposed inferiority. Their special talents and unique abilities had been rather neglected, perhaps because discussing such things might seem too much like praise.

“My name is Artaxes,” he added, inclining his head in a very small, very brief gesture of politeness. Mother would have wanted him to remember it. His pale eyes watched her, waiting to see how she would respond. Politely, probably, given how she had greeted him. But was it politeness or wariness? He knew the wings he wore and the fangs in his mouth were plenty of reason to startle and unnerve strangers, though he had put some distance between himself and the herd he had once dwelled near. Maybe their reach was not so far as they believed.

This one was definitely not fool. And she could see the curiosity in his gaze. Growing up among kirin's as she had, it did not register right away that other breeds might not be familiar with it. It was merely something she was gifted with from her kirin father and half-kirin mother. "Perhaps I should thank you for your politeness then." She paused. "Or maybe you should have attempted to disrupt me." Yuuka tilted her head in thought. "A good test." How skilled was she at maintaining her peaceful state while a stranger was talking to her? Interesting thought. She would have to try having someone speak with her next time. Though she would prefer it not to be a habit.

The stallion offered up his name and brought her out of her inner thought process. Artaxes? No name she had ever heard. Which only meant she had been right from the start. This was a stallion that had never been through the area before. She was rather positive that someone would remember such a fierce looking stallion. The wings made her think of the 'darker' breeds she'd been warned of, like the kalona. But she did not feel that title applied to Artaxes. Finally, after a few more seconds of remaining quietly contemplative, Yuuka dipped her head briefly. "I am called Yuuka." As to whether it was a 'pleasure' to meet him or not was undecided. Thus she just offered her name. Followed by an impressive crack of thunder. Such pleasant timing, weather! Yuuka just sighed.

The boom of thunder that accompanied her name drew his ears to swivel back, from the noise, then up towards the source of the sound. As if he needed them to point at the sky to know that the storm was getting ready to break. Nature, it seemed, lacked his patience. Perhaps if the storm had waited longer, gathered more to it, it could have wrecked a true path of destructive power when it came. Now it was likely to be little more than rain and wind, though the lightning that surely accompanied the rolling boom of thunder still deserved some respect. Standing out by the lake was probably not exactly what he ought to be doing as it broke.

“We should not be here,” he said, glancing at the open lake shore and then back to Yuuka. He had no idea who she was, or where she was from, or what she was doing here besides walking across the water, but as foolish as he knew it to be Artaxes could not completely shake the faint feeling of familiarity. There was barely even a resemblance, and even that meant nothing. Nothing. “Although I suppose if you want an interruption, the thunder seems to be quite eager to supply one. Barely waited for you to finish speaking,” the stallion commented, a faint smirk baring part of a fang before he snorted and turned as though to go. Alone in the open was bad, the though the trees would not be much improvement. “Are you from this area?” he asked finally, not willing to get himself struck by lightning or some other senseless thing simply because he was far from where he'd grown up.

Where his ears swiveled up towards the storm, her own just flattened in a resigned fashion. It was going to rain and there was nothing that she or this stallion could do about it. Unfortunately, Yuuka was fairly certain she would not be able to make her way back to her herd before the storm fully broke. Especially as the first drops of rain were beginning to patter around them.

The mare was faintly surprised at the little bit of joking this Artaxes tossed at her. A smile even graced her features before falling as she looked up briefly to the sky. "Ah, yes. But if I weren't more worried about being struck by the lightning, I may have considered the thunder a worthy challenger for that task." Yuuka said lightly before regarding the stallion again. "But you are correct. This is not a good place to be." Not thinking much of it, as he turned to 'go', Yuuka simply began walking with him, pausing as he asked if she was from the area. "I am familiar enough with the area. And if I remember correctly, we should be able to find adequate shelter a little deeper into the trees this way." She indicated with her horn in the direction she had begun walking. "I don't believe it was anything as grand as a cave, however." Yuuka added as an afterthought, frowning slightly. But she could have been mistaken and maybe there was a cave? They would find out soon enough, she figured.

Artaxes nodded as Yuuka replied that she was from the area, and did know a decent place to shelter. "I am not familiar with any of this place at the moment, so I shall trust your judgement." She seemed likely to have a sound enough head on her shoulders, if what brief words they had exchanged were anything to judge by. He could give the innocent until proven guilty attitude a try, and if it failed to work out he had never been one to shy from difficulty. If trouble arose, he would handle it. If it came to a fight, he would handle it. He would not go searching for reasons to be uncertain or wary, he knew he would find plenty if he did. There was plenty to do, there was no need to find reasons to fret. If Yuuka proved unreliable, then he would handle it. Most likely it would simply mean getting a bit wet, and the world would not end over such a silly little thing.

She had said familiar enough', he realized idly. Did that mean she was not from the place either? "Are you simply passing through as well?" he asked, wondering where it might be a water-walker might be headed. Or from, for that matter. Hers was a curious talent to be sure.

Taking that as indication that he was going to follow, the kirin-uni walked carefully along the ground as the rain began to fall. One had to watch where they stepped around here, with the slick rocks from the lake and landslides from the loose gravel and soil around the trees. She didn't feel it necessary to check over her shoulder every few minutes either, knowing the stallion would still be there. He seemed like an intelligent being. A little interesting as she was not used to seeing anyone like him.

Ducking around a few low hanging branches, Yuuka briefly glanced behind her. "One could say that, yes." She responded, not really answering at first until hopping a log and pausing, glancing from one side to the other before spotting the landmark she was seeking. "I do not live in this area, no. But my herd wanders not too far from here." So she was 'familiar enough' with the land. "There. The larger trees fell earlier in the year. They should make sufficient shelter for now." And some creature had burrowed further into the ground, so it was deeper then it first appeared. "I do apologize it's not... the most cozy of places." She added, peering curiously inside the 'shelter' of tree and earth.
