Guidelines for Play - We do not have a roleplay requirement for minor characters, but any character with a title like wingleader, weyrleader, candidatemaster, etccc. does need to put in an appearance at least every three months. If you find yourself unable to play the character during that time due to real life (which hits, we know!), then please chat to staff - we can almost certainly make accommodations.
- It shouldn’t need to be said, but wait for approval before you start playing a character.
- If you want to play having a bonded character, please wait until you have the bonded creature OOC, through a hatching or a thread game etc.
- In Character Actions = In Character Consequences. If they sass the headwoman, there’s going to be trouble. If they moon the weyrleader, yep, consequences. This applies to backstory as much as anything else, and if you want to involve another player’s character in there go for it but ask first.
- If you want to make a character who is related to an NPC, we might be willing to OK this - but come and chat to us first so we can talk about it and if it’ll make sense for the character and the game.

Character Creation Guidelines - You can make a human character without a bond partner or firelizard at any time but if you want one with a dragon, wher, or flitt you will have to acquire the bondmate in some fashion.
- While Masters are free to create within the limits of availability* you cannot make a Master with the same speciality as an existing PC, though you may have the same speciality as an NPC. PC Masters will be in charge of their area of expertise. If a PC Master goes inactive the same rules apply for them as for Wingleaders and Huntleaders but they will not be moved from their post unless somebody else is interested in it. In this case the previous Master will be assumed to have transferred elsewhere. Players may return to them at a later date but they will answer to the newer Master.
*As Masters are very expensive for the Weyr to pay and keep the Weyr can't afford to have too many of them. The availability of Masters is listed as unnamed NPCs. If you wish to make a Master with an unlisted speciality please contact Tawny or Con to chat. See here for the list of existing PCs, and specialties that have an open slot.
- If you wish to make a character who is related to a current or past person of high rank (for example a Lord Holder or a wingleader) please consult Con and Tawny. We are quite happy for such characters to be made but they will need to be talked over with us to make sure they fit canon etc first.
- If you acquire an adult dragonrider and are interested in them having held a rank in the past please contact Con or Tawny to discuss.
- Unless otherwise stated dragonriders cannot be created holding any rank above wingrider, i.e. if you win a dragon you can't decide to create them as a wingsecond.
- Dragon candidates will be between about fourteen and twenty, though the boundary may in some circumstances stretch a little towards twenty-one. However, no candidate may stand until they have completed basic training and at least a turn of squireship, making the youngest candidate standing for any hatching fourteen. Some may impress slightly younger or older in a stands impression, but in this case they may find life and their subsequent career potentially difficult!
- Dragon candidates must come from a Hold that is under the protection of High Reaches Weyr. The possible major Holds are High Reaches Hold, Tillek Hold, and Nabol Hold; these Holds are ruled by Lord Holders. There are a multitude of smaller Holds in the area which are run by Holders (notably not Lords) and you can create one for your candidate to hail from if you like or look under the Major Holds in the wiki for some pre-named ones. Traders are fair game in whichever territory they happen to be in at the time.
- All candidates (dragon and wher alike) will be in good shape (or face going through basic training again) both physically and mentally. Potential candidates with either physical or mental disabilities which make them unable to perform their duties adequately as a rider, or without basic empathy, will not be approved as candidates. Stands impressions are uncommon, but not impossible.
- Please note that dragon candidates new to the weyr will not be eligible to stand for at least two IC turns. Wher candidates must have been resident for at least five IC turns before they can try for an egg.
- Characters can impress a firelizard or wher from puberty onwards, but are unlikely to get their hands on a creature at that age.
- Firelizards are Rare, Rare and very expensive creatures! As such, each new character starts with one firelizard slot that you can fill with a firelizard you win from an event or acquire through other means, and new ones to impress new creatures will have to be bought in our marks shop.
- We do not accept Hear All Dragon characters at this time, and none currently exist on Pern.
- There are no white dragons. There will be no white dragons. No-one has ever even heard of a white dragon. Ruth hasn’t yet existed, and may never exist.
- Make things follow logically. Your character lived in a far-out cothold? They might have difficulty around lots of new faces, and are probably entirely illiterate. In fact, most of rural Pern is entirely illiterate, so there we go.
- Don’t make your character perfect. Let’s face it, complicated and flawed people are a lot more fun to have around, messing things up for themselves and others, and will probably do more interesting things than someone who never took a step off of the path in their lives.
- Don’t be Overly Dramatic when creating a character. Drama is fine, even fun, but there is a limit, and we will tell you when you hit that ‘dear god has anything nice ever happened to your character in their whole lives???!!!!’ limit. Restrain your inner drama queen a little.
- Your human character’s eyes Are Not Mood Rings. They do not change colour. Deal with it.
- If your character has a Deep Dark Secret, we want to see it in their profile. Metagaming will be dealt with via the pink mallet o’ doom, so please don’t worry about that, but at the same time… we don’t want to suddenly discover that your character is actually the kidnapped child of Elric of Melnibone and now has their father’s soul eating sword, y’know? If you want to work something major and new in, please come and talk to staff about it and we'll see if we can work something out.
- Crit is not a personal attack. We want you to write the best characters you can, and for them to fit in with the setting, and most characters are going to end up with a couple of points of crit to make them the best they can be. It's not a judgement on you or your writing, just ways we think you can improve.
