It had been a long journey back, through the ice and snow, they had had to exit through one of the dwarvish mines as the tunnel had once more collapsed in on itself. Freja had told him that they would start work on a new one, ensure it was more reinforced.

The mines had not been an easy way out. They were dark, damp and neglected, they had to go carefully over rickety bridges and down narrow tunnels. Eventually they had come out into the open, past the dragon's peak he noted.

The rest of the journey had been straightforward, they stopped a few times to allow the men to rest, he needed rest too, still part mortal. He found it frustrating beyond belief. Like the rest of them he was pleased when the Pantheon came into view. They headed for the town and Isambard to the Rose Garden. He greeted Elora and followed her direction to the room that she had placed Maia in. Isambard stopped by the door and knocked lightly.

Maia had grown stronger in his absence. With Elora's insistence, she had even begun to fill out once more. She was no longer a shadow of herself. Her pale skin glowed with health and the weakness she felt was slowly leaving her.

She was sat in the comfortable room, working on a small trinket. She had decided that she would make a little something for Elora to repay her kindness. The parts had been easy enough to find within the bustling marketplace, a few of the tools she had had to fashion or commission for herself. Everything was spread neatly across her small table when there was a knock on the door. Lifting her head, she raised a pale brow and then turned her attention back to her work.

"Come in," she called, expecting Elora or one of her girls to be on the other side.

Isambard opened the door and stepped inside. He gave the young woman a smile and left the door open a little.
"Maia, I bring good news." He said, looking around the room, before glancing back to her. She looked very well he thought. Giving her to Elora had been a very good move as suspected.
"We travelled to your village and met your grandmother. She is a very ... interesting woman. She reminded me of you, your determination."

Maia looked up in surprise at the male voice and she rose quickly to her feet when she realized who it was. Inside she could feel her heart skip a beat as he said he brought good news. The mention of her grandmother brought a smile to her lips.
"She raised me. My father was never much interested in me, despite the fact that I could do twice as much work as my brother ever could," she smirked and shook her head as she looked down at her temporary workbench. "Were you able to save them?" she asked softly, turning her earnest eyes back up to him.

That amused him a little, he walked over to the work bench and looked down at what it was that she was working on.
"Well, your father is a fool. I learned that quite quickly." He did not care if he caused offence is was the truth. The large dwarf could not see beyond his own greed, that made him dangerous.
"I liked your grandmother, she is a sensible woman, clever and a good leader. I think you're a very good person to succeed her." He shoved his hands into his pockets as he was prone to doing.
"We did save them. The water had been contaminated. Talia spotted it. We cleared the problem and helped them make sure that it wouldn't happen again."

Maia smirked and watched him move closer to look at her work. Her smirk turned wistful and she looked down at her hands.
"He does not really have much of a choice in the matter. I am all he has left to succeed him... or her, really, as I am sure you quickly figured out who is really in charge there," she said. Regardless of the facts, however, she felt rather flattered by his opinion of her. Relief washed over her face when he delivered the verdict and she looked up at him as she bowed her head to him.

"Thank you. I am in your debt for certain. I knew that if I prayed hard and worked twice as much so that my prayers would be answered."

Isambard laughed, in his debt. He thought that funny as he was a god and she a mortal. Surely he was always in the debt of mortals, they were the ones that demanded payment from the gods were they not?
"Just keep praying Maia, and working, that's all I can ask from anyone." He bowed his head to her. "I will arrange for you to be escorted back, though I think Talia wished to train you in the ways of medicine so that you could help your people. Is that something that interests you?"

Maia lifted her brows as he laughed. She was fairly certain she had not said anything funny. Though as he spoke, she smiled. If that was all he wished from her, then she certainly could fulfill that. Looking down to her table, she turned towards it and idly toyed with one of her tools. Now that she was free of the mountains, she was not entirely sure she wanted to go back. Not yet at least. There was a huge world beyond those stone walls and she was eager to discover it. Clever is what her grandmother called her. Clever and curious. She knew her place was with her people, but this was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

"I don't know," she answered honestly, looking back up at him. "I have never thought much about medicine, but it does seem to be a wise thing to learn," she smiled. "I certainly won't learn anything of use amongst these walls," she smirked slightly and glanced around. She honestly had no use for guile and seduction. She probably would fail miserably at both. She preferred more practical uses of her time. "Though understand that is not a slight against Elora. She has been nothing but kind and generous towards me. It is merely the truth," she smirked and shrugged.

Isambard smirked about her observation of the Rose Garden. It did not take a genius to work out what type of establishment it was, and Elora did not hide it. She was not ashamed.
"I do not take that as a slight on Elora, I am aware this life is for the minority and I would not wish it on you." That might sound hypocritical but he meant it. Prostitution was the oldest profession, or so they said. It would always be there, an industry as much as any other.
"It couldn't hurt to learn a little, your people are primitive. I mean that with the greatest respect. They could have saved lives if they had had just a little medical knowledge, rather than cowering in fear."

Maia's lips twisted into a sideways smile and she glanced up at the god beside her. That was a strange realization, she mused. To be walking and living amongst gods.
"I agree," she nodded. "After having been here and seeing how far behind we are, I can see how primitive we are. It will be interesting to learn how to balance tradition with progress," she mused and looked back at her tinkering. "What do you think of this? I'm making it for Elora as thanks," she smiled and scooped the box up into her hands. "It is not finished yet, but watch." Slowly she began to turn a small crank that would be manipulated by a key. A few notes plinked musically and the top began to open slowly into a metal rose. Stopping before she got to a point where it would fall apart, she looked up at him again. "I had to find something to occupy my time with."

Isambard peered over her shoulder at the little object she had been tinkering with. It was made from metal, small pieces polished and put together in a way that only small hands would have been able to manage. He watched her turn the mechanism and smirked a little. Very good indeed he thought to himself.
"Well you have talent as well as brains it seems. Elora will love it, she likes anything to appeal to her vanity and things that come from the heart." The woman was an enigma, hard as nails on the outside but soft as anything inside.

Maia smiled proudly at his praise. Carefully she folded the piece back to where it was and she set it down.
"Thank you. And thank you again for your help. It means the world to me," she smiled and turned to look up at him. "Now that I know you are back, I will go and seek out Talia. I owe her my gratitude as well."
