The year is 2015. This year has no particular significance to the world in any way shape or form. December 21, 2012 passed just like any ordinary day on Earth. No fireballs, no solar flares, no stock market crashes or economies imploding. All that distinguishes 2015 is the fact that it is the Pokemon franchise's 20th birthday.

The developers at GameFreak and Nintendo have been hiding something from the video gaming public for years, something that had been described at E3 conventions as simply something that would "revolutionize gaming forever." Most fans suspected virtual reality, but Nintendo confirmed nothing. For many years, they delayed releasing this video gaming wonder. Even now, some employees are hesitant about what might happen when this new technology goes global. Nintendo's own Satoshi Tajiri has chosen to unveil this revolution to a select few candidates, handpicked based on their performance in and around the Pokemon community, including TCG, WiFi and Global tournaments, and everything else in between. Tajiri-sensei chose these lucky few not for their numerous donations to Nintendo's cause, nor for their prodigious tournament win streaks, but for their potential and creativity. However, the company is hiding another bundle of secrets along with this "revolutionizing technology," one of which conceals their darkest discovery yet.

                            FIVE MONTHS BEFORE. [TOKYO, JAPAN.]
Conversation between SATOSHI TAJIRI and SHIGEKI MORIMOTO (Loosely translated from Japanese)
                            1:16:48 AM

                            Morimoto: Hello...?
                            Tajiri: Hello Morimoto!
Morimoto: Oh, hello Tajiri. *yawns* Why did you call me this late at night?
Tajiri: Morimoto, you are one of the secret developers of the virtual reality, right?
Morimoto: Yes... You know this, why are you calling me?
Tajiri: I heard from Sugimori that one of the experiments went... terribly wrong.
                            Morimoto: ...
Tajiri: Morimoto, did you fall asleep?
Morimoto: N-no, no... The details of that day... horrify me.
Tajiri: Matsuda, the music director, went missing. Was he the one who got sucked into the game?
Morimoto: ... Yes. We were doing an experiment with Ocarina of Time 3DS and... And the next thing we know, he's gone...
Tajiri: ... Morimoto... He was "transported into the game." That's what the report said.
Morimoto: ... Yes. Yes, he was.
                            Tajiri: How do you know?
Morimoto: Somehow, Link inside of the 3DS we were testing began to move on his own. He seemed flustered and surprised at first, then started jumping around as if... Almost as if delighted.
Tajiri: ... That sounds like a Matsuda tendency.
Morimoto: It is. Anyway, the plot in the game began to progress without us. We could do nothing to influence the game. That's why we believe that Matsuda was sucked into the game.
Tajiri: But Matsuda was in Link's body?
                            Morimoto: Correct.
Tajiri: Hmm... Maybe... Maybe that is what the new generation of gamers want.
                            Morimoto: ... Excuse me?
Tajiri: Maybe... What if we gave some lucky fans the chance to be on the cutting edge of Pokemon? The new system is almost ready for a more strenuous test.
Morimoto: ...?! Y-you must be joking!
Tajiri: No. We could test it out as an exclusive Pokemon event with a small number of people.
Morimoto: ... Are you serious about this?
Tajiri: Of course! Remember when we thought that Pokemon was done for? Look what a success it has become!
Morimoto: ... How should I program the game?
Tajiri: I was thinking about the designs of the Pokemon Special Manga characters... You remember how popular that was.
Morimoto: *sounds of shuffling on phone line* ... *sounds of pen scratching on paper* That sounds... pretty good. Should we include Pokemon Colosseum, Ranger, and XD main characters for good measure?
Tajiri: I don't think so. It would require extra coding in case some of these players actually wanted to perform Snags or correctly utilize the Capture Styler.
Morimoto: I see... What region should this take place in?
Tajiri: ... I don't know... They might expect something new.
Morimoto: Then how about in Unova? It was a big deal when Black and White came out.
                            Tajiri: Let's do that then.
Morimoto: Alright... The programming itself should take a few months, if I get the full crew to work on it.
Tajiri: Perfect! I'll be sending out invitations to a random select group of players across the globe, including the more prominent gamers of this generation.
Morimoto: When will this event take place? How are they going to get here?
Tajiri: Probably sometime before Christmas. And we'll fly them in, of course.
Morimoto: ... You are crazy, Tajiri.
Tajiri: Good night, Morimoto. You and your programming team have a big job ahead!
