Nio Love
Eventually, even a recluse needed to eat. Maebe hadn't left her room all day, but her stomach won over her need for solitary, and she opened her door to go satiate it with some below average sustenance. Instead of making it down the hall, she tripped on something she hadn't seen on her turn, falling face down on the floor with her legs tangled in whatever she'd tripped on. She rolled to sit up, and look at the thing she was practically sitting on - Lucky's lap.

"Uh." Falling face first on the floor had knocked all of the witty banter right out of her head, so that was all he got for now. She sat up straighter, adjusted her curls until they looked perfect again, and settled in to an expression more her style. "Strange. Last time I saw you, I think you were the one on top of me."

"Oh! Sorry."

And then Lucky dipped whoever he was with low and gave them a smooch.

Or at least, that was the intention. The reality was that he was still stricken with extreme sensitivity as a result of the mandatory seminar, and it just felt like the right thing to do. Maebe had interrupted his quiet contemplation out in the hallway, but her reminder only reminded him how he felt terrible for abandoning her all those months ago, just because of some unsolved murder. But there was definitely some dipping in the form of pulling her a little closer, and even an actual kiss. A very apologetic one.

"Is there anything I could do to make it up to you?" he asked, completely sincerely.

Maebe's eyes widened comically when she realized Lucky was pulling her in, and pressing his lips against hers. The first thought that passed through her head was dry but it was instinct to judge, and immediately after she realized it was Lucky doing this and sunk against him. Kisses were so much sweeter when they came from unexpected sources - she could only hope he was drunk and would regret it later.

He asked her what he could do to make it up to her, and Thaw immediately groaned in her mind at all of the sick, twisted ideas that sprung up. Maebe grinned, and leaned in to bite his lower lip. "You kind of just did. But hey, don't stop. I'm sure you can make it up to me a little more before whatever you're on wears off."

She almost asked him if he wanted to share - but narcotics weren't really her thing. She was far more interested in taking advantage of people who were compromised, than allowing herself to be in that position.

"I - I just vant to see you happy."

At Maebes's insistence, he pressed his lips against hers again, this time for considerably longer. The hand against her back drifted dangerously close to her waist, while the other gently brushed through her hair with fingertips, until it too settled to cradle her face. He closed his eyes, if only to hide how intently he was studying her reactions to him.

Under normal circumstances, Lucky might have been ashamed of how forward he was being, likely to the point that none of this would have happened in the first place. He certainly must have looked like he was on something, but all he was on were feelings and realizations and overwhelming guilt. But this wasn't about him - and it was why, despite the circumstances, he felt nothing right then but a cold and cloying sense of obligation, and an almost painful yearning to finally be forgiven for what he had done. This was about atonement. Maebe deserved to be happy.

And he would do anything to make sure of it right now.

"Vhat can I do," he began to ask again, an exhaled whisper only seconds after their lips parted.

Wrong answer.

Maebe sucked in a sharp breath, and pulled away, but his fingers had gotten into her hair, and she melted back against him. It felt too good to let him touch her like that. She knew this was a bad idea, and she wanted to stop him, but Lucky was so gentle. All he wanted to do was make her happy. And all the things that made her happy were best done in private - not out in a hall. There was no way of making her happy here.

"Uhh." Maebe's breathing was ragged and stuttered, as she found herself unable to answer the question. The correct answer was to walk away. Or at least.. go somewhere private. But Lucky wasn't himself, and she almost kind of didn't hate him - enough reason to not take advantage of him that intimately when he was impaired.

"S.. uh..more. Kissing." That was not helping the situation, but at least she hadn't said what she really wanted, which was take me back to your place.

Lucky felt Maebe tensing for a moment, as if she'd considered leaving. As if he had failed her again. It was like ice in his veins, and the shadow of concern crossed his face. He could do better. He could be better. He pulled her close again and in the process sent them both tumbling from sitting to lying against the well worn and occasionally bloodstained carpet.

"You alvays look so sad," he observed, pale green eyes meeting hers. He swept a few locks of hair behind her ear before he ran his hand along the side of her face, fingers tracing down her neck behind the curtain of pale blonde ringlets. The words had barely left his lips when they left hers, opting instead to mark the points of an invisible constellation that spanned to her jawline and hinted at more below it.

But at the last moment he seemed to reconsider, and instead charted course upward again. His lips brushed against her exposed ear. "Tell me vhat is wrong."

Maebe had no control over any part of this situation, and that legitimately scared her. Her mouth formed a silent 'o' when they tumbled down together, and she fell very still, staring down at Lucky with bewilderment rampant on her features. She lost track of him when his head dipped to kiss down her jawline, and wondered if this was what people acted like when real emotions occurred. She couldn't tell the difference between love and lust anymore. Everything jumbled together, and none of it should have come from Lucky.

She sat up quickly, finding the willpower to pull herself away from his lips just before she gave in. Whispering into her ear had almost been her undoing, but it had equally been her lifeline - and she pulled herself up enough to sit up straight, hands still on the floor on either side of him. She just tried to breathe.

It was an embarrassment, really. The only reason why she was reacting so strongly to Lucky was because she knew it wasn't real. She reminded herself that that was part of the attraction. The regret he would feel later.

She didn't want Lucky to regret this.

As soon as the thought entered her head, she hardened to steel and folded her arms tightly in front of herself. "Okay. That's enough. We're done here. You're a very good kisser, Lucky. I bet you didn't know that." Her smug smile was weak - her game was off. "You've definitely made up for.. for.." She couldn't even remember what he felt guilty for. Her facade dropped again, and she put her head in her hands and groaned.

By all appearances, Mimsy seemed to be in a particularly good mood. Instead of focusing on the papers in her hand as per usual, her eyes greeted the day by looking straight ahead. This ran the risk of meeting someone's passing glance, which was something best avoided, but she didn't even mind that for the moment.

It was with purpose and direction that she entered the hallway where two other hunters were situated, so she initially paid them no mind. The sight of two of her coworkers so close together was not an uncommon one, and she intended to just slip by them without a word, like always.

And she might have, had she not discovered that one of them was Lucky.

Mimsy was no longer in a very good mood at all.

Her calm lasted just long enough for her to fold her packet of information, put it in her pocket, and look up again. A scowl found the back of Maebe's head, because she knew she had to focus - looking at Lucky would never allow for that.

"Get off of him, you disgusting little b***h," she spat, bending to snatch up a fistful of cloth from the back of her coat. "I know what you're doing, and I will not let you."

As soon as she'd hissed out those words, she firmly yanked on Maebe's coat to pull her off of him, then straightened to glare down at her. The look in her eyes very clearly dared her to do anything other than run away.

Lucky didn't put up much of a fight when Maebe sat up first. His hands slipped away, broke contact as she walled herself off. They hovered, momentarily, in the hope that he could still help her to tell him what was wrong. He looked confused; he felt terrible. It hurt him that he couldn't help her.

"Maebe-? Oh. Oh no. I - I should not have -" His glasses had gone a little askew, and he corrected them with a practiced nudge, another to brush some messy hair out of his face. For nearly a quarter of a minute he couldn't meet her gaze, what little of it there was to see while she groaned into her hands. Even now he could feel his chest rise and fall with quickened breathing, his face flushed and strangely warm. All physiological, uncontrollable, leaving him looking disheveled and desperate. Another reason to apologize. "Boże, I am so sorry. Please forgive me... this is all my fault..."

She was near enough that he could reach up and hold her face delicately in his hands, thumbs resting against the smaller, daintier, unmarred hands that hid her expression from view. Lucky tried to smile at her, but it was strained and pitiful, too marred with concern. "It's okay. You are right to feel this vay. I do not deserve your forgiveness. You are nice, Maebe. You are one of the only ones who vould - t-talk to me - even now, after I -"

He choked on whatever else might have said. Slowly he let go again, and drew his hands away. "Please don't -"

- Only to be cut off by a far more familiar voice, and the sudden disappearance of Maebe from immediately above him as Mimsy yanked her back.

Lucky had at this point scrambled into a sitting position himself, cowering against the wall. There was too much negative energy here. Innately he knew this was all his fault, all of it. It was bad enough he had upset this poor girl, but now he had infuriated his sister - his poor, caring, only sister - and he couldn't allow Maebe to suffer in his place over such a simple misunderstanding. Even the idea of it was strangely unbearable.

"Mimsy, I did this -" He was on his hands and knees, prostrating himself before her. "I'm the one you should be disgusted by. Disown me. You deserve a better brother than I can ever be."

She felt his hands reach up to press against hers, and let out a tiny sound of dismay when the cool skin felt good against her own. He was still apologizing, and for that she was thankful - because a man who apologized that much wasn't as attractive as one who never apologized for his actions. Lucky was helping her focus, and her hands dropped down, wrapping around his. Her face was flushed with color, which was a rare look for her. Not many people could make Maebe Grace Bertrand blush.

Her smug smile had almost returned, but she froze before it could happen, at the words You are nice, Maebe. Now she just wondered if he was stupid, and tried to focus on that venomous thought instead of the thrill of knowing that someone thought she was nice. Venom felt more familiar.

The smug smile finally lifted her lips, and her head dipped down, slowly aiming to steal another kiss - when she was lifted up into the air. She felt like she was flying - she hung from her jacket, limp and confused, and slowly turning in mid-air.

That quiet girl from the boat seemed severely upset that Maebe was hitting on Lucky, and her eyebrows rose high as she caught a glimpse of who she was dealing with. Yeowza, Lucky liked the tall ones, did he?

Maebe was all ready to tell the b***h off, but Lucky was trying to take the heat, and she found herself unable to let that happen. So Maebe struggled out of her coat, dropped down to the ground, and looked up at the woman with every ounce of sass she owned. Hands on hips, head tilted in judgement, eyes rolled upward in disbelief.

"Sorry." It was clear she didn't mean that. "I didn't know Lucky was taken. He's just so irresistable. I'll try to keep my hands off him from now on, but mmm." She licked her lips. "It's going to be hard."

Her eyes wandered pointedly at Lucky's lower section. "Real hard." She was not subtle.

Seeing Lucky kneel before her might once have been a fulfilling image to Mimsy, something born of victory; now it just made her feel sick.

"Lucky," she sighed, shoulders drooping as she finally turned her attention to him. "Get up. You do not understand. I have no intention of rejecting you, and do not want you to ever leave. She does not deserve you. I can explain later, when you are feeling better. When you are more yourself. Get some rest, Lucky. Go home. Please, just...go home."

She dropped the empty coat to point down the hallway in the direction she had come from, and stared insistently at him until Maebe apologized. The way her nose wrinkled as she listened to the rest of her comments seemed to indicate that she'd just swallowed something absolutely horrendous. She might as well have, really.

"Yes, you certainly are incredibly sorry." With a scoff and a sneer, she folded her arms, tilting her head to look down at her. She wasn't worth her time, and she hated that she was forced to make this exception. "He is mine. You will stay away from him. If you find this simple task too difficult for your pathetic, singularly-focused mind to comprehend, then I am more than willing to assist you."

Summoning her weapon indoors was not an option as long as she was attempting to stay within the boundaries of 'good' behavior, and she had failed to bring anything other than paper with her. This would have to wait. If what she said was not enough to get her to leave, then she could reassess her options in a more broad sense. Of course, that meant accepting the inevitability of more violent options, but that was the risk of this sort of conflict.

"I am happy to remove your hands if you cannot keep them off of him. Or your eyes, if they are incapable of avoiding him as well. Do you see the pattern? Are you at least intelligent enough to grasp the simplicity of my threat?"

The way that she looked at Maebe indicated a massive lack of belief that she was, in fact, intelligent enough.

At Mimsy's request, Lucky got to his feet and stood awkwardly beside her. His arms were folded uncomfortably in front of him, almost hugging himself, to further display his guilt. He couldn't seem to look directly at her. She was angry because of him, even if she didn't want to say it here. But it would only get worse if he didn't listen to her. Maebe wasn't at fault, so she would be fine. Right? "O-of course."

Maebe's commentary did send a bright red flush through his cheeks again. It didn't take long for Lucky to actually begin to back off, mumbling a further string of apologies on his way around Mimsy. He paused just long enough to mouth the word 'sorry' one last time to Maebe before he fled down the hall toward the low numbers.

Maebe didn't remember Mimsy being so pushy. She didn't remember much, really - but she felt like she would have remembered this. She picked up her discarded coat, and slowly slid it back onto her shoulders. Lucky was fleeing the scene of the crime, and Maebe tsked with pity at how tightly wound Mimsy had him wrapped around her finger. At least now she knew it was for the best to squash any of those nasty little feelings she'd almost had. Lucky was someone else's pet dog.

For now.

Maebe giggled each time Mimsy threatened some part of her body. Her eyelids fluttered, and she shrugged her shoulders.

"You look like you're all talk. I don't fear you, and you need to know that. But, fortunately for you, I really am interested in keeping my hands to myself. Not because you asked, but because it's what I want." Her lips curled up deviously as she lied through her teeth. "Just so you know."

Maebe adjusted the curls around her head until they reached near perfection, and turned to walk away. Heels clacked against the hard floor, punctuating her pace - and her parting words.

"I guess I have you to thank. He's a real good kisser."

She wished she'd been lying about that part.

The idea that she looked harmless was as hilarious to Mimsy as the threats seemed to be to Maebe, and she laughed in turn.

"If that is how I appear to you, then you are as observant as you are intelligent. The applicable quantifier is not very, since I am sure you will need that explained to you."

With one careful motion, she reached up to push one of her braids aside, nudging it over her left shoulder to uncover the front of her coat. There were several smudges of dried blood there, one of them more obviously a splatter, each in varying stages of transitioning from red to rust.

"I am glad that you have informed me that you are not afraid, despite the fact that you should be. It is indicative of an error in your genetic code - a nasty little flaw that will lead to your demise. It makes this so simple for me. You are incapable of knowing when to submit to a superior force. You are incapable of a proper assessment. I have met people like you, and they underestimated me too, once." She patted the stained portion of the coat. "Yet I wear the badges of honor, and they have nothing to show but shame. Defeat. And death, in her case."

Smiling, she glanced down towards the splatter, fondly brushing it with her thumb. That was a good day.

"So as long as you stay out of my way, and keep your hands off of what is mine, there will be no issue."

It was a successful talk, as far as she was concerned. Or it would have been, had the comment about Lucky's kissing skills not existed. Now horrified, she opened her mouth and immediately closed it again, pressing her palm over her terrible, terrible lips.

Was that true? Was she to thank for that?

She had absolutely no way of knowing, thanks to the technicalities of alternate realities. Truthfully, she didn't want to know, unless the answer was 'no'. She clenched her teeth and moved her hand away, unwilling to let that appalling idea be the last words spoken in this exchange.

"You're welcome," she hissed.

Not ideal either.

Oh, God. She was such a nerd.

Maebe yawned into her hand, trying to keep her eyes open, until Mimsy 'showed off' her 'badges'. For a single moment, Maebe actually took her seriously. But then she reminded herself that bloodstains could be easily faked, and she calmed down the quickening heartbeat that had started to sputter. Obviously they were fake. Obviously.

"Okay, crazy." Maebe muttered. The entire conversation was boring her to tears. "I'll try not to, mm, touch your stuff."

Now she wanted to touch everything that was Mimsy's. She wanted to lace her fingers up and rub all of Mimsy's possessions down. She wanted to make Lucky purr.

No. No she didn't. No she didn't. She didn't want to do any of those things to Lucky, for reasons that had nothing to do with Mimsy. She frowned, and waved a hand dismissively in Mimsy's direction. She didn't even bother with a sarcastic goodbye.

This entire situation was really putting a damper on her otherwise lovely day.
