Unicorn horns had their uses. In times of peace or when mercy was called for, they could be instruments of powerful soothing and rejuvenation. In times of trial or war, their sharpness served as a weapon, defending their bearer from injury and turning any attempted violence back around on the unicorn's assailant. In Trevelyn's experience, though, it was a rare thing for the unicorn to be the aggressor. Perhaps that was a side affect of the horns' natural healing properties; did it really make sense for a creature (and an appendage) blessed with the power to cure to also be given the power to destroy?

He smiled somewhat ironically at his thoughts, the philosophical musings about healing versus hurting completely at odds with his blood streaked body. It had been a long day, and he ached in places he didn't know he had. Yet at the same time, it was a pleasure to ache and to be alive.

~~~
Trev had been a loner such adolescence, preferring the company of his own thoughts to the more 'normal' herd groupings in the area. Though devoted to his sister Memory, he never saw her anymore as the two had agreed it was to their mutual benefit to try and completely forget the past and start fresh, without the burden of their family and its associated problems. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. Perhaps it would have been easier to start fresh if Trevelyn hadn't been determined to keep one reminder with him of his past life, the lock and chain that were firmly attached to his ankle.
Still, the heavy piece of metal had its uses.
He hadn't meant to be pulled into any grand combat. He had no causes of his own, was less than territorial, and, when it boiled down to it, felt no sense of kinship with the other Soquili of the region. It wasn't there fault, but the fact of the matter was that he just felt nothing.
However, in spite of his lack of 'togetherness' with the rest of the local Soquili, he couldn't ignore the rumors of the mass Kalona herd steadily encroaching on their area. He definitely couldn't ignore when the rumors proved to be true. After the merest amount of waffling, he had sought out and joined up with a group of Soquili attempting to drive back the invading Kalona. It had been nasty business, but in the end, the defending Soquili had proved successful.
That didn't mean there still weren't loose ends out there, though. This day had been spent in small groups combing through the forest for stragglers from the herd, Kalona who hadn't departed when their herd had departed. In some ways, Trev would have preferred a straight up fight; it would have been less stressful.
And, he thought ruefully as he ran his small horn over one of the nastier gashes in his flank, potentially less hazardous. All the new injuries he sported were the result of his chain having snagged on a tree root and tripped him, causing him to tumble down a craggy embankment. Nothing was broken, but it certainly didn't feel very good!
Brightrayne had only been in the area for a short amount of time. In fact he had barely been in this new place for a full week. Strange how quickly time seemed to be passing already. He wasn’t a particularly interesting stallion if he told the truth to shame the devil. No agenda to fight for, no territory he was interested in, no crusade to find a true love… Just… livin’ life… doin’ stuff. Perhaps there were those that would look down upon the rainbow painted stallion for not doing more or trying to make more of himself but those particular others were more than welcome to go ahead and find something that was worth his time to be uptight about… things. It’s not that Bright was apathetic, it was that he was laid back to the point of being bored in general and at all times. Who really would go around asking to have that own personality? Hell, he would probably be irritated by himself if that wasn’t such a splendid waste of energy. The last three days he had been with a fluttercorn of dubious mannerisms and the idea of spending too much more time feeling embarrassed for the other stallion had made the decision to make a quick, tidy, and polite exit the preferred option. That behavior in and of itself defined the sort of stallion that Bright really was. If something rubbed him the wrong way, instead of fighting to make it different… He would just turn is back and head in another direction. One door closing, another door opening would be the phrase… If he had a clue about doors or windows that is.
Looking around, his body relaxed and hair tied up into an odd bun to avoid dragging on the ground Bright tried to figure out just what exactly he should be doing with himself. It was an unusual time of his life right now, being between places and not really feeling anything specific about it. He was just existing. A certain unrest came with doing nothing with your life but at the same time… there was no real upset.
Whoah. When had he gone off the deep end and become such a thoughtful flowery type of boy. Never, that was when. It wasn’t a crime to think things. Physically shaking himself from back hooves to the tip of his nose, Bright straightened up and looked around some more. Time to –do- something. He didn’t need to feel super passionately about whatever the it was. But it was time to do something. Stepping forward, ears pricked forward with curiosity he had not gone very far before seeing someone nearby… streaked in blood? Oh-man… bloody meant either in danger or dangerous. The latter of the two – well really, neither of those things held any real interest for him.
Trevelyn might have been preoccupied with his injuries, but it would take more than one tumble to deaden senses honed by years of training and isolated living, to say nothing of the recent events with the Kalona. At the sounds of approaching footfalls, he had paused in his healing, almost freezing into his position as he heard the footsteps continue to move closer. It didn't appear that the walker was taking any pains to hide the sound of their steps, which either meant they were unaware of any danger or were aware and dismissed it.
He tensed up slightly, straining to see a proper glimpse of the walker. It couldn't be one of his fellow hunters, but it was possible it was one of the Kalona he was looking for...and it would not be good if it was. Rapidly, he took inventory of his injuries; a few gashes, a lot of soreness, a lump on his head...nothing that should impede him too much normally, but these days it was best to be at the top of his game at all times. If only he'd had about 30 more minutes to finish healing himself...
When the other stallion finally stepped into view, Trevelyn almost laughed, he was so relieved. There was the embankment between them, but the distance was marginal and in no way prevented Trev from seeing a very regular stallion, completely unkalona in anyway. What a relief!
He managed to contain that relief; having ascertained the heavily-striding Soquili was no Kalona didn't mean there might not be one out there. His plum-colored eyes took in the stallion's pale color, which stood out like a beacon in the shadowy cover of the forest, and his unusual hairstyle. Somehow, he doubted this fellow was a native of the forest.
Trevelyn took in the stallion's pricked ears and alert posture as he himself returned his attention to healing. Good; obviously the stallion wasn't oblivious, even if he was loud-footed. Trevelyn had no great love for the other Soquili of the world, but he was a fair fellow and hated the idea of anyone blindly walking into danger.
Lowering his horn back to the deep gash on his flank, he acknowledged the other stallion in his own gruff way. "It's my own blood, so you don't have to worry about me skewering you. But I'd be careful with where you're standing, the bank isn't too steady." Then there would be two injured Soquili, with only one horn between them!
