User ImageDayo was not a happy camper. She'd gone out with the intention of culling one of the herds frequently moving through the pridelands, and managed to snag a limping antelope without too much trouble. No, the trouble hadn't started until she was half way home with the stupid beast.

It was stuck. She was stuck! Gaah!

She had used this shortcut, a narrow path between thorny bushes, many times. However, she'd probably never tried to use it dragging a kill this large. It hadn't been a problem until she was in the middle of the thorny patch and the path turned just a little bit. Something must have snagged her kill, but she couldn't see where it was stuck, and she was reluctant to wiggle around too much. Spending an evening getting thorns out wasn't exactly her idea of a good time. And she didn't want to drop the kill either. The carcass would still block her way, or at least make it difficult to continue forward. Backing out the way she came would most likely mean a thorn or two in her backside unless she managed to turn just right without seeing the path.

She cursed under her breath and tried pulling again.

Janga was still getting used to the vision thing. They had started not that long ago, and he hadn't been expecting them at all. Though he had learned quickly that it was something called a seer ability, and it wasn't the result of any kind of brain trauma. He supposed it must have come from his bloodline, though he didn't really know why. Somehow, it just seemed like it explained the whole thing.

In any case, he was still getting the hang of using his visions- making sense of them. Thankfully, the last one he'd had was very clear. He'd seen a bunch of thorns and his good friend Dayo somewhere within them, stuck. Enough had been clear that he'd been able to figure out where the patch of thorns was, and he just needed to make his way over. A part of him still thought he would go and nothing would happen. That it was just a normal dream. But that wasn't the case. In the past, he'd seen things and they'd come true, even if he had not acted on them.

Acting on them, in fact, seemed a way to change fate.

He found the thorns without much trouble, and spotted the lioness with what looked like a kill trying to wiggle around within. He poked his head in at the opening, not venturing in just yet. "Hello!" he offered, "it looks like you could use a bit of help!"

A frustrated growl and a muffled "Ow!" was the only greeting Janga received at first. Pulling harder hadn't helped. Dayo was annoyed at the situation she had managed to put herself in. It was a stupid mistake, but she couldn't just back up time and undo it. However, lashing out at someone offering to help wasn't constructive at all. She let out a frustrated snort through her nostrils and let go of her hard won kill to be able to speak to the lion on the other side.

"Is that you Janga?" she asked. "My kill is stuck in here."

She wasn't sure what he could do about it. In fact, she wasn't even sure she wanted him to help. It felt embarrassing to ask for help if she couldn't be part of the solution. And at the moment she had no idea what to do.

She stopped talking to me for a while there...

I understand!

"It's me," he chuckled lightly, though he was trying not to enjoy the scene too much, "Are you okay?" if she was getting pricked by the thorns, he imagined he needed to help her out. He frowned thoughtfully, not really able to see where the animal had gotten snagged from his position. He imagined they were going to need to switch views if he was going to help her. Hopefully she wasn't all caught up in the thorns herself.

That would make things much more complicated.

"Why don't you leave the kill there a moment and come out if you can," he offered, "I'll try and pull it out for you- thorns have a habit of getting in my mane and not my flesh, so I have a better shield for this kind of thing, I think." Plus, he had hadaya blood in him.

He was used to thorns.

Dayo's first instinct was to say no. But Janga meant well, so she didn't say anything at all at first. She wondered why she felt so reluctant to do as Janga suggested. What he said made sense, but it just felt wrong to ask for (or accept) any help if she couldn't be part of the sollution. She couldn't argue about the first part however. Getting herself out might give new insights to the problem at hand.

"Ok," she finally said, "I'm trying to get out, and then we can decide what to do next."

She was not willing to let Janga swoop in to the rescue without helping out herself. It took her a long time to manouver around the kill and finally emerge on the other side. Dayo was sure she had thorns stuck here and there, but she was just glad to finally be on the other side. She'd never use this shortcut again if she could help it.

"Well, that was stupid," she said, and then started looking for the pesky thorn that must be stuck in her behind.

I'm sorry... My muse for her just went "lolnope!"

Janga chuckled. He didn't mind if she wanted to come up with another option once she was out of the thicket- kills were very important to lions, and he really didn't want to make it seem like he was trying to take hers from her, even if he knew she wouldn't think that way about him. It was just an unspoken rule that lions dealt with their own kills, and other lions needed to butt out, unless something went wrong or they were working together to take down something bigger.

He didn't want to step on her paws, he just wanted to make sure she didn't get hurt by all those little thorns. That was his primary concern.

The meal wouldn't mind a few puncture wounds one way or another, he imagined.

"It was almost something someone from my family would do!" He laughed once she joined him. It seemed like she was alright, though there were a couple of thorns sticking in her. "Hold still," he offered, "let me get those out for you. I don't really like your porcupine impersonation."

Dayo felt a bit self concious, but she did stand still and accept the help. She could probably have removed them herself, but this was much easier and probably less painful. The fact that she had helped both Janga and his siblings deal with similar issues also helped. It was funny how they almost took pride in being accident prone.

"Yeah, your family will have to share the glory from time to time," she said, smiling to distract herself from the painful thorns, "You can't hog all the thorns for yourself!"

It was a little bit tempting to just leave the stupid kill in there and let it rot. But Dayo was not a quitter. She'd give it another go eventually.

Janga worked on removing the thorns carefully. He didn't want to hurt her, or do something that would totally embarrass her and himself. Like fall on top of her or get one of the thorns in him while trying to get them out of her.

All things he was capable of doing.

"Haha, we don't want them!" He replied with a laugh as he worked, "but I don't really want YOU to have them, either. Maybe we can find a big jerk to toss in there some time or something." He was trying to be jovial about the whole thing, but he was feeling a little concerned. Even if she seemed to be alright, he couldn't help but worry about her. She was very important to him and his family.

This kind of thing... he didn't like it.

"There. Did I get them all?"

"We could... ow... go get a really stupid hyena and throw in there," she suggested, "And then keep piling in hyenas until the bushes run out of thorns..."

It was a really silly suggestion, but to her 'hyena' and 'jerk' was pretty much the same word. Thinking about hyena abuse was funny, and it made her forget about her own stupidity. All the horrible stories she'd heard when she was younger... Stories about the war, and those that had died. She had yet to meet a hyena she liked, and she doubted she'd meet one.

"Yeah," she said and spun around experimentally, "I think that's all."

She gave the thorn-lined path a nasty look, but then decided she couldn't let a shrubbery win.

"Right," she said, "One last try. I'll try not to turn into a porcupine again!"

She went in again, and after a bit of thinking she carefully positioned herself over the antelope, grabbed her kill by one of its hind legs, and kept moving forward. It was much easier to drag the beast back the way she had come from in the first place. It would mean that she'd have to take the long way around when she was on the other side, but at least she knew that the beast would fit. She had dragged it the same way once after all. Dayo was very pleased when her plan seemed to work. So pleased, in fact, that she got a bit careless when reaching the exit.

"Mother of... gah!" she yelled from the other side of the bushes, "I'm okay, I'm going to have to take the long way around this time."

She took the antelope by the neck instead and started dragging it around the offending bushes, wearing a few new thorns like a prickly badge of honor.

Janga laughed. "That does sound like a good plan." He didn't hate hyenas, really, though he had never met one. But he had heard stories from the other pride members and, from what he had gathered, they weren't very good animals. Maybe he didn't have the right to judge them, but he was loyal to his own and he wouldn't stand up for them when his friends were all complaining.

He watched as she moved to get her kill, a worried expression finding its way over his face once more.

He couldn't see much, but he heard more than enough. She made a yelp and he yelped in return. He was just about to ask her if she was alright when he heard her speak, a sigh escaping him ."I'll join you halfway, then." He chuckled lightly.

He walked around the bushes of thorns. A much longer journey then going through them, but it was now one he would remember to consider when dragging back food.

"You have more thorns!" He gasped the moment he saw her again.

Dayo dropped her hard won kill to be able to talk to Janga. She looked pleased now, with the antelope unstuck and only a couple more thorns to show for it.

"Ah, only a couple," she said and smiled. "Don't look at the thorns, look at my kill!"

To be completely honest it looked a bit sad. It was a decent kill, but the antelope had been dragged back and forth through a patch of thorns and it showed. A few thorns were stuck in the beast, and it had a seriously bad hair day.

"Eh, it'll still taste good," Dayo decided, "Would you like some when we get back?"

*facepalm* I'm sorry I dropped the ball on this one.

Janga looked at the kill, the lion finding it very difficult to keep himself from laughing. "Well, it's big, anyway," he teased lightly, "and I'm sure all the thorns softened the meat! It'll make it that much more enjoyable when you get it back to the pride lands." He chuckled faintly, highly amused.

He supposed things could have been a lot worse. She didn't look like the thorns had done that much damage, and the food was still with her. It was a good end to a prickly situation.

Ha prickly.

Haha, prickly end.

Still amused, he gave her a friendly nod. "I would love some! Why don't we head home now? I think we've had enough thorns to last a lifetime." Though he would likely be falling into some very soon, given his luck and who his father was.

Dayo snorted. She had no way to know what Janga was thinking, but she could see he was amused and the feeling was contagious. It was kind of funny now. She reached back and pulled a stray thorn out with her teeth. Ah, and it was even more amusing now, without that annoying little pinprick.

"Yeah, I'm done with thorns for a good long while," she said with a grin, after spitting out the thorn, "And I'm not sure my backside needed to be softened... But there we go."

She laughed and picked up the kill again. It would be nice to get back and see if his theory about the extra tender meat was correct... But even if it turned out delicious she wasn't willing to try this again.
