Who founded the clan?: Saba Rythrial
How was the clan founded?: The Rythrial house was founded by Saba Rythrial, a woman notorious for her exceptional battle strength and utter lack of compassion or empathy. In addition to her lack of compassion, she had a particularly hatred toward men, seeing them as simply tools incapable of intelligent thought that need to be thrown away when they are no longer of use. Prior to the establishment of the Rythrial house, Saba was the leader of a particularly powerful group of bandits. Although, calling them "bandits" is a somewhat inaccurate term. They were really more similar to a mafia family, but more violent and less of a monetary focus. Everyone nude her command was a female shinigami who had been trained ruthlessly to master bakudo and zanjutsu. When the Gotei 14 was being established, though Saba's strength made her a potential candidate for being recruited as a captain, her tyrannical nature and hatred of men deemed her unfit for a leadership position.
Irritated by her inability to spread her influence to the newly formed military, Saba decided she would find another way to ensure that she had a crucial role in the Gotei 14. After a lot of consideration, she decided the best way to do this would be to form a powerful noble house that trains exceptional shinigami for the Gotei 14. By providing warriors, she would automatically gain influence over the people who rejected her for her brutality. She had convinced some of her more loyal subordinates to join the newly formed noble house as part of a central group of 6 elders to cooperatively make decisions and oversee the intense training that every household member would partake in.
With the help of her 6 elders, Saba established not only a set of strict household rules, but two separate training regiments: one for men and one for women. The training for men focused completely on fighting ability and ability to adequately follow orders. While men were educated in very basic kido and strategy, their focus was virtually entirely on combat ability and shikai control. Women had a more balanced focus involving not only physical combat, but also emphasizing combat techniques, strategy, and kido. Training for women was also significantly less brutal. Physical punishments for incompetence, while still frequent, tended to be less intense with women than they were with men.
Surprisingly, Saba allowed anyone to become part of the Rythrial household as long as they possessed Shinigami powers, simply requiring all household members to tattoo the clan emblem somewhere on their body. While her discriminatory nature towards men was evident through her particular brutality toward them and her rule that all heads of the house in the future and their 6 elders can only be women, she made no effort to prevent males from joining the household. She even gave a few if the more outstanding ones positions as training instructors or overseers, much to the shock of her group of elders. Even though Saba was accepting and benevolent when it came to joining the household, staying in the household was something else entirely. Saba encouraged brutality and torturous punishments for those who either broke a house rule or were unsuccessful in their training. Saba even created two official systems for disownment and forced eviction from the household: one for failure to meet the high standards in training, and another for those who defy the house rules. Rule breakers receive one particularly torturous punishment as a warning of sort, and the second offense results in immediate disownment. The system for failures was significantly more complex: if methods of torture and the typical spartan brutality of the Rythrial training sessions was inadequate, the person in question would have a hearing with three to five of the household elders to explain themselves and provide justification for their incompetence and have the option of either leaving the house on their own or finding an alternate focus. If the incompetent person was a woman, they were allowed to focus on kido, battle strategies, assassination, and other areas that did not necessarily involve direct combat; however, men did not have those options. If a man faced potential disownment, they could either leave on their own or train to obtain bankai, but because the bankai training was even more brutal and strenuous than ordinary training, most men chose to leave on their own. If the person facing possible disownment could not successfully master the area of their choosing, they would be immediately disowned and evicted from the household. Disowned household members received two deep cuts on their clan emblem tattoo and were forced to change their name. Those who left on their own were allowed to keep their name, but most chose not to.

What is the House's influence in the Seireitei?: Some of the most powerful and most skilled fighters in all of the Gotei 14 come from this house. Because of its consistency to provide the military with powerful and skilled shinigami, the house's main influence is over the Gotei 14 itself. The clan has the most significant influence over the squadrons that engage in the most direct combat (squads One, Five, Seven, and Ten).
