Sun Hunter
SHADOW RUN

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
General Information
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.

If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.

    Mechanics
  • You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
  • Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
  • If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
  • After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

  • Trainees: 0 recovery
  • Sun Trainees: 1 recovery
  • Hunters: 1 recovery
  • Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

Since it had been quite a long time since she'd bothered to try a training course (that whole, avoiding society as much as possible thing and all), Abbi figured that it was a new year! It was time to really take herself seriously if she ever expected to make it to full hunter status! Sure that was years from now and yeah ok maybe she had been a truly terrible trainee, but that was ok! There was always time for improvement, like she was planning now!
Cheered by her own pep talk, the teen made her way toward the training grounds, not at all sure which she would take but figuring she'd decide once she got there.
"I did the jenga one with Jack and the tower one with Miss Cass and..." Talking out loud to herself as she walked, the girl stopped in the middle of the hallway to hold up two fingers.
"Two?! I've seriously only done two?!"

Since no one was in the hallway to see her, the teen bent at the middle to let her arms hang down in despair, her pose full on screaming that she was moping about herself.
"I am the worst Hunter ever in the history of hunters. How did I make it this far? How did I even make it past the first... Thing where they weeded out the ones who were weak? Ughhhhh!" Both hands flew up to press against her face in woe, the teen quite openly wallowing.

Milo had simply never done any of the training courses, most (if not all) training seemed limited to the grounds or hands on on small missions he had managed to weasel himself in. They were a good way to hit the ground running, especially with how many times he had been eaten and squished.

And it was to his usual regime of a few rounds with some dummies before finding some sort of duty to perform, did Milo come upon the hallway where Abbi was having her moping pity party (the one she thought she was alone in). The brunet stopped a little ways off and kept quiet and waited until she was done, mostly judging to make sure he hadn't run into some sort of personal problem that he really wouldn't have wanted to get himself drawn into. But from the sounds of it. A Hunter kind, something he didn't mind.

"'Ey, nah, wahine, don't think like that ~" He chimed in even without knowing the extent of it, shoving his hands in his pockets while he sauntered over. And just as he was about to go on about fighting spirits, and kokoro and some shining examples from Super Sentai.

He realized something when he got closer, "Aa, hey, Abbi, ya?" But as he remembered her from the ice cream trip and the various places grouped with a few he knew by name, a few flashes from that weird dream from New Years also seemed to enter his mind. Odd...

A bit longer the teen bemoaned her lot in life, complete with holding her temples and dramatically swinging from one side of the hallway to the other. Of course, no good pity party could be accomplished about one's achievements without mentioning other faulty qualities regarding oneself. Which was, unfortunately, the little tirade that Milo happened to walk in on.
"Uhhh when will my hair turn pretty? Its so orange when will it be really red!?" Was her current rant right before he spoke, which once he did, Abbi was quite grateful she had not decided, at that moment, to lament amount her lack of extra padding in certain areas, as it were.
With a tiny noise she jumped into the air and whirled to face the voice which she had not seen approach, hands coming to press against her mouth to stop the scream that tried to leave her. There was always someone at Deus, she was not allowed to be startled by someone else occupying the same hallway as she.

"Wahi-whadda what?" The girl asked first, furrowing her eyebrow for a moment. The person stepped closer and she switch to a smile, waving excitedly.
"Milo! Mee-lo! Milo?" Uhhh which one was it? Why did she think it was pronounced differently?
Regardless of pronunciation she skipped the last distance that separated them with gusto, jumping into the spot she would stand in next to him, grinning all the while.
"What's up, champ?" There was more to be said, but before she could think of it, Abbi blinked rapidly and looked up at the boy. There was something tickling the edges of her memory and she couldn't quite name it... They had only met a few times before, right? Why did she feel she knew him better than that?

No, he really didn't try to touch on the subject about her hair. He really couldn't figure out anything to comment with (though, in toku series, so many actors' hair colors got lighter in hue than anything) and she was already going through the various ways to pronounce his name anyways. "Either works," he huffed in an amused manner while still maintaining his grin. It had been a long time since he had heard it pronounced the other way though, even his mother had given up at some point.

But hey, she seemed to be out of her mopey mood. Abbi was chipper and smiling and this was making Milo feel so much more at ease. For all he knew, she could have dissolved into personal problems. Urg. But she hadn't so he felt free to shrug, "Aa, not much really. Was thinking of getting some trainin' in or somethin' before getting some sort of daily activity." He really had yet to find some forte that would occupy him for more than a few hours.

"Wanna come with?" It felt oddly natural to just ask her for her company even if it didn't seem like the sort of thing they would have done. Like they would do something less fighty and more just enjoy the outdoors.

"Which do you like better?" She asked with a dopey grin, rising up on tip toes to poke at his shoulder with a laugh. It wasn't until she had rocked back onto her heels that she realized that was very forward and nearly lost her balance trying to figure out where her sudden bravado had come from. For a moment her face flushed, but she smiled again when he mentioned training.
"Yeah that's why I'm here too! To see if I can do some cool training or something!" Her fists clenched together and punched into the air along with a few bunny hops. When she landed she nodded excitedly at his offer and took off ahead of him, darting back and forth across the hallway that led to the training arena.

While she ran, Abbi tried her best to piece together this familiarity with Milo, turning back as she got toward the end to run straight back up to him.
"We only met like... Twice, right?" She asked, skipping a circle around him before she tripped back to stand in front of him.
"Did... Did you have a weird dream during New Years?" Was that it?

Abbi received a small laugh for her gesture at first, along with an arm that hovered close that had shot out when she began to tip a bit too much. It was nice even as small as it was, like it was familiar. "Milo seems to be the norm," he replied while still sort of dodging the question. Still wasn't his own opinion on the matter, but not like he had much on it; either worked and both technically correct.

"Good thing we ran into each other then, ya?" Milo finally shrugged, pushing on with the subject matter and physically from his spot as the smaller girl went leaping ahead. Keeping up took a bit of effort with her excited darting but he managed with long strides. She came back soon enough though and was ready to reply and affirm her inquiry until she asked about New Years.

"Aa yeah, dude, I kind of did." He blinked, having not put much thought into it. "It was weird, just thought it was one of those weird what if dreams your mind comes up with since, like, people on the island were in it, except for this one girl I didn't know." He paused, crossing his arms over his chest as his eyes went skyward for a moment in thought before bringing them back down to the orange haired girl that had spun circles around him.

"Guessing you did too? A party, ya?"

Maybe its the arm that goes out to keep her safe, or the way he shrugs off what his name preference is, as though its an old argument she knows has no clear answer. Maybe it isn't either of those, maybe it isn't anything but the fact that she searched around her mind long enough and wiggled past the block Viveca so poorly tried to set up that she figures it out, but finally Abbi remembers the texts at the New Year's party, and more importantly, everything she had thought when she'd sent them.
"You... You were there too! We... We texted!" Anything else he said, about a girl he didn't know or the others on the island being there, all of it was totally ignored. Instead the girl flushed and took a step back, a finger raised to point at him, then between them. "In that world... We dated.."

{ Oh, Jack in all the seven hells... }
No! No this was important! ...Maybe?
Abbi was confused, should she be... Upset? Or not? They had had a mutual break up in that other world, but should she still be hurt? How did one do not honest relationships in other worlds?
"Err... Um... I'm not... Sure how to feel?" Her head tilted to one side before she frowned down at the ground. Why was this even a big deal? Did it have to be?
"This is weird."

It was indeed weird, and the random bits of information that Abbi brought up sparked his own tidbits of memory from the dream as well. How they had dated, his brother being on the island, he surfed more, was more open about things with other people, wasn't so into following a show as a code of life. Not a rush of information, but details that panged a look of hurt in his eyes for a brief moment as he wondered if that 'other world' was supposed to be better. Because, well, he might have felt a little jealous.

But he pushed it down, letting his upbeat expressions resurface as he moved to clasp a hand on Abbi's shoulder. "A bit weird," he nodded with a little laugh, "nothin' more than usual around her, ya?"

"Maybe its was showing us we meant to cross paths and be friends, wahine." Milo went on, holding his other hand and balling it into a fist like he was making an inspiration sentai speech. There was a sort of fire in his eyes as well, "Don't need to be like it was there, but we can get to know each other, ya? And what better way than through trainin' and stuff." Maybe he was trying to push things away from topics of personal things... just a bit.

"You ever do one of the trainin' courses?"

Perhaps someone less observant might have missed the strange sadness that passed Milo's face, but Abbi had decided perhaps taking just a small peek at him might help her figure how she was supposed to feel. But she had a habit of noticing things and is quick to pick up on the stricken look on the boys face, however momentary. Made bold by their time together, the girl stepped forward and took his hand to give it a quick squeeze. She didn't say anything, for once, and instead gave him a long look that she finished with a small smile.
In a flash she let go of his hand, only to find him grasping her shoulder. A squeak and small jump were her immediate reply before she dissolved into an embarrassed laugh.
"I guess so! This place sure is Freaky Friday to the max!" Another laugh, especially when he began to launch into a speech. Unable to help herself, the girl clenched both her hands together too, looking as determined as she could as she listened.

"Yeah! We don't have to date cause that was some other life and I don't even know you-- I mean you're cute and stuff-- But yeah! Training is a great way to strengthen the bonds of friendship!" So maybe someone had watched an inspirational anime or two... Still the girl laughed again and grabbed his hand once more to pull him toward the start of the training field.
"Yup! I've done one where I played Jenga and it was so, so hard! And then I saved a Princess from a tower! This one seems pretty straight forward though! Chop down and keep goin'! Let's do it!" Abbi let go of his hand to rush a few steps ahead and summon her scythe, sure to give it a good swing, for limbering up purposes and definitely not to show off.
With another laugh and smile, the teen gestured to her sorta new friend.
"You do any of them?" Was all she shouted before she launched herself forward into the arena. With a quick swipe-swipe-twirl sort of move she mowed down four shadowlings and took a moment to look proud of herself.

Milo had hoped she hadn't seen it, he simply wanted to be kept in the mindset of his happy justice filled Power Ranger world. But the small squeeze of her hand in his gave him the indication that she had and from there he was glad he had managed to change the subject. And that that gesture had been turned from some form of comfort to pulling him along on an adventure. Because he was totally fine with friendship building and inspirational anime thoughts.

"Oh nah, haven't done any of these things yet," he told her as he too summoned his weapon and joined Abbi on the course. "They seem pretty awesome," he spun the naginata about in a fancy manner and ended up taking down two of shadows.

"You're pretty good," he chuckled, noticing her proud looking stance.

As much as she wanted to touch on the subject of his sad face, the teen understood, even in a small way she can't quite grasp at fully, that this is a conversation left for a better time. She wants to ask now, to be nosey and to know why he is sad. It doesn't make sense, not when she has known him in that other world to be an incredibly cheerful person, but Abbi is not ready to push yet, especially when she honestly doesn't know him. So she lets it go and says nothing.

An appreciative "oooooooh" leaves her as he summons his weapon. It is unlikely that she will ever be unimpressed with other people's weapons and today is no exception.
"You're a Sun, right?" The scythe is used to point in the general direction of his coat. "I bet you'll beat me super easy at this, then!"
All the more she puffs at his praise and tries to look bashful, but the next wave approaches and Abbi cannot help herself. With an over the top flourish she began to strike, careful to add in a combo move or two for extra shadow defeating.
"Naahhhh... I'm pretty bad at fighting, honestly!" Says the girl who just mowed down five shadowlings like it was nothing. Modesty, thy name is not Abbi.

Milo would have been happy to know that Abbi wasn't ready to push for information. For now, he hoped it would be forgotten in the midst of this little training exercise.

"Yup!" Of course giving a little spin to boost the emphasis of the detailing on his coat; posing, even a quick one, didn't seem practical while the next wave was coming through. "Your Moon, ya?" He asked in turn, hoping he was getting his symbols right. Death and Moon were a little similar in ways.

Milo flicked Koume in his hands, lowering his grip to give himself a little more area to his swing. The plan didn't go as well as he hoped with only three getting caught in his attack. But eh, wasn't mad or anything. He was probably distracted by Abbi's fancy moves. "Oh nah, wahine, think you're gonna have me beat." He laughed.

Once again the girl "ooooooh" and "ahhhh"d for Milo's twirl, laughing good naturedly.
"Isn't being a Sun kinda tough? You guys gotta fight like, all the time, right?" Was now the time for friendly conversation? Of course.
If the Sun's training course was any indication, their jobs were tough. But surprisingly, Abbi found herself enjoying the rush of having to constantly be on her toes. It was a nice change of pace to expect a wave of attacks like this and know they could be stopped with a simple swing of her scythe. Made the whole course easier to handle, and certainly way better than stupid Jenga blocks.
"Yeah! Defense and all! Though, yanno, they're always talking about meat shields in the meetings..." She laughed and clipped a shadow that drew too close. "I am way too tiny to be anyone's meat shield..."

For a moment she grew quiet as she stepped back and tried to fend off another wave but found her swing too high, managing only to hit two this time. Not as impressive, but at least she wasn't out of the game yet!
"Wahine? What's that? Is it like... I-D-K!"

"Nah, not too bad." He told the smaller girl as he danced at least around a few of the shadows, trying to keep himself up. Despite her reservations, Abbi was really good at the course. He hoped she would see that. "Can tell it might not be for everyone, but I feel like it's my callin', you know?" Though, for now all he could give to prove it were a few sets of fancy looking moves but not much in the ways of progress against actually defeating some of the shadows.

In fact, they seemed to be starting to overwhelm him. Swarming. "Nothin' wrong with defense," Milo slid to one side, but they still kept coming, "an' don't think you're not up to snuff wahine, the sentai girls are always tiny and are always mighty!" Okay, now it was getting a little big. Not to mention he was now on his back because of these little things. s**t.

Well, it was his division's course right?
