After the pumpkin and other self battle, Melvin was feeling a bit haggard. His ribs and stomach hurt from being kicked, but not as much as his heart. Poor Better Melvin had gone away, and he had inconvenienced his wish self by summoning him. He really wasn't a good person.
As it stood, he had only one place to go, even if they wanted him or not, and headed through the portal with everyone else. He waited for Rin though, and stood there wondering if he should wait at his room or her room or here or if it was better he didn't impose his company on her and just send her a text asking first.
He decided to just stand here instead so they could walk back to their rooms together.

Rin emerged on the other side, haggard and worn but not at all happier despite her wish. Which only seemed to make it worse in reality. She noticed Melvin was waiting and gave him a questioning look for his efforts. He never really needed to wait around for her before, usually just catching up whenever. Maybe he was hurt and needed help to reach the infirmary.
"You okay?"

He perked when Rin showed up, looking sad. So sad. He knew she had been sad for a while, intensely sad, so much that she wanted things to end when they first started dating. He wondered if that changed even a little.
At the question, he smiled. "No, but thanks for asking. What's really important is how you are feeling." He reached out, his other hand wrapped around his sides where he was kicked, and set the hand on her shoulder, staring at her with a creased brow. "Are you okay?"

Rin froze in her tracks at the gesture and squinted at Melvin. What was he up to? She cringed at her immediate suspicion at her own boyfriend being nice to her after a ******** battle. Was that really something to be suspicious of? Her face broke into a deepened frown. "Is it possible to be okay - but not okay?" She had no idea if that question even made the slightest bit of sense.

He nodded. "Anything is possible when it comes to your feelings. Nothing is wrong or right. Just feel what you feel." He said, his voice softened and above a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might hurt her.
Considering she wasn't okay, he looked her over and then moved in. "I'm respecting your space, but I worry about the 'not okay' part of you, so let's get you to bed." He said, and then picked her up in his arms. It was a miracle he could do just that, but once again, Hunter power boost really worked wonders.
"I should carry you around more when you are hurt. I'm sorry I haven't done that before." He apologized, starting to head to the dorms. "Should we go to your room. I feel bad we always go to mine. You have your own personal space to relax in after all."

Rin was bristling, her suspicion turned to, 'Is he being condescending now?' She could feel anger bubbling in the back of her thoughts before being cut off with a sudden fizzle as she was scooped up in his arms. She just sort of... stared now. Uncomprehending of what he could possibly be up to. No one ever did things for no reason and she struggled to figure out what his was. When he asked which room to move her to, she grimaced just slightly. Her room was vacant and untouched for so long it was possible cobwebs were forming alongside the dust at this point. She imagined her linens smelled musty and old. It was with this line of thought that she sneered and answered, "Not mine."

At her request, he headed for his room, up the stairs and juggled Rin just a bit as he unlocked his room and went inside. He shut the door, headed over, and gently laid her on his bed. Then he sat down beside her and felt her brow, as if she had a high fever. "Would you like me to get your something to drink? Water? Tea?" He could probably find something. Rin had been yelling at him before, and while this wouldn't make up for it, he wanted her to feel less "not okay" and more okay. Okay with life. Okay with him. Okay with BEING!
He touched her hand, stroking it softly as he looked at her. "Don't worry. You won't have to do any more heavy lifting ever again."

"I'm not sick," Rin spoke carefully with a clipped tone. "I just want to know what you are up to. You're acting very suspiciously and I demand to know why." She was sick of trying to figure it out.

He quickly removed his hands, holding them up to show he was unarmed, and then felt terrible for making her yell.
"I'm not up to anything. I just want you to feel better. You don't feel okay, and I think you don't feel okay a lot of the time. I knew you didn't feel okay when we first met, when we started dating, and I don't think that's gotten any better with me in it. I've been a very shitty boyfriend to you, not helping you out, and then I made you leave your work to come spend time with me in a musty room with angry people. I'm sorry. I didn't even catch you when you feel on the ground after the pumpkin was finished with his turn."
He set his hands on his lap, looking down. "I never was very good at relationships, and now I just feel like I'm straining you like my ex-fiance, Mia. I'm driving you crazy and I'm making you feel worse each day."

Rin fell silent as he spoke his peace. Then she felt worse somehow. The more he blamed himself, the worse she felt.
"It's not you! If it was from before then why the ******** would you ever think it was you?" She finally snapped. She didn't really know what was the cause but to say it was him or even had anything to do with him felt ridiculous and unfair to either person.
Then he went into past relationships, some facts of which Rin never knew, but she felt had nothing to do with this so opted not to point out just yet.

"No. No. You're just being nice. It has to be me. I ruin a lot of people. It's why I didn't date anyone seriously for a long time. I wind up exhausting them and they get fed up." He twisted his hands a bit before taking off his gloves. They felt suffocating somehow when he felt so much yet felt very little. Like he was numbing himself with the gloves but not in a good way.
"I think it's me because you seemed happier when we were friends. You always seem upset now. Everyone is upset with me. I'm getting to them."
He worried himself about how alone he sometimes felt and envious of how easy it was for others to just talk in a group. "You are the only person I've seriously dated in years. The past girl I dated....Mia." He said the same distantly, as if it was both pleasant but hurt to say now. "We were really serious, but she wanted to make me better. Said we couldn't go farther unless I stepped up, and so I went to the doctors again, but it didn't work. We didn't work." He remembered the last month of their time together where everything reached it's peak. His family had been excited with the news that they might tie the knot. "She couldn't deal anymore. Soon all we did was fight. When it was over, everyone said she looked more haggard because of me, like I stripped the years away from her."
He felt his eyes welling up again. "So I just sort of only did one nighters after that. It was nice in a way. Got to pick who I wanted and where we went. Lots of easy girls on campus after all. Guys too."
He paused. "Then I started dating you."

Rin just sort of fell silent at that point. Melvin's floodgates were open and whether or not she wanted to know - she was going to know, because he was set on telling her. So she listened and did not interrupt as he just sort of unloaded way more information than she was prepared to process in one sitting.

She didn't say anything, and as he glanced up, eyes tearing up, he took that as confirmation. She didn't like him anymore, or she felt bad for Mia now that she was in her place. They had to bear the burden of being with him.
"I thought you were crazy because you wanted to be with me, and since you said you wanted to end it, it just sorta confirmed it all. That only someone who was nuts would want to actually date me instead of just ******** around for the night. Only people like that are on this island, and while that is very cruel to say, a lot of people have told me how they don't come from good homes or had a great life before coming here. Since I did, I wanted everyone to know what a good home and family was like, but I wasn't good at that. I'm not normal like that. Not a expect like that. I was mean to everyone to think I could help them and make them see how things should be when I really just wanted everything a certain way. I always do. I'm terrible like that. I wasn't sensitive to anyone's needs and now no one wants me around."
He took off his goggles to wipe his eyes. "Now I see how tired you are, and I haven't helped you feel better about life. You would be better off with someone less messed up and demanding than me. I know you want to hold hands without me wearing gloves or to kiss whenever you feel like instead of just after brushing your teeth. It's always my way and now it seems like all we do is fight. You deserve someone better than me. Someone - Someone who can catch you when you fall from pumpkins!" He wailed, and then started to cry into his hands.

Rin set her jaw as fury washed over her and this time she gave in. Just a little. "Why the ******** do you always have to do that? You bring up the past over and over and ******** over again. How the ******** do you ever expect to have a future or even present if you can't let that s**t go?" She placed her arm across her chest and averted her gaze from him. She wasn't fond of weakness and he was being unquestionably so.
"Stop crying Melvin, it isn't helping."

He wiped at his eyes, sniffling, but it wouldn't stop. His body needed to emotional release and Melvin's crying card was long since past due. "I wish I could but my eyes want to." How was he supposed to be unfair to his own feelings by not crying?
Reaching for a tissue in his pocket, he wiped at his face before looking at Rin not looking at him. "I'm sorry. The past is important to me. My family is there. My friends are there. I'm not sure what the future even has for me. It's terrifying when I don't have the emotional support I once have. I don't even have my sister, Sophie, to call on anymore." He took a quick breath as he said her name. "Ohhhh. I miss her so much. If I stare at my photo album any longer, I'll warp the pages. She probably hates me now and I deserve it for fake dying on her."
The crying picked back up, but he muffled it into his handkerchief.
