Hobbies:
Piano - Katarin learned piano through formal lessons at a young age, much like the rest of her siblings. Where Erik never showed the aptitude for it and Alois managed some pretty decent playing, Katarin excelled at piano and developed a profound love for the instrument (and music in its composition too). She practices daily on various pieces, which she considers her audition pieces, as well as the cluster of measures she has yet to arrange into a coherent song. Occasionally she'll ghost her fingers across a table in a diner while she waits for her food, quietly rehearsing the fingering required for a particularly complicated ensemble. Additionally, she will practice at music stores, where pianos are readily available (and as she learned from her brother, she exhibits great interest in buying the instrument before passing entirely).
However, her piano hobby extends to teaching others how to play. She finds a wonderful sense of fulfillment in teaching someone the basic scales, or simple songs that they can use to develop proper hand placement. She inwardly rejoices when someone finds middle C with no mistakes, or can shift octaves on a scale without having to count the keys. As a result, she intends to offer piano lessons once she finds the time beyond her day job to do so.
Singing - More an accompaniment to piano, Katarin learned to sing as the sole instrument in her possession at all times. Where she may not be able to hear the tones produced for a piece when she's at the bookstore, she still has the ability to hum the notes for a modicum of similarity. Thus, Katarin is often heard reciting various piano pieces in a wordless and accurate a cappella when the bookstore slows to a crawl. Sometimes she gets carried away and belts out the notes as best she can, successfully attracting unwanted attention to a hobby she exhibits a little too much passion for. Overall this hobby takes a backseat to the tasks she's currently engrossed in, but it travels with her wherever she goes. Besides, since she's not tone deaf, it's often opens a point of conversation with strangers.
Investigation - Little time passed before Katarin realized Destiny City harbored some dangerous secrets. Shadows moved when they shouldn't, strange people leapt across rooftops without effort, and perhaps most disturbingly, strangers of all kinds seemingly disappeared with the blink of an eye. Katarin soon fostered an awareness for such bizarre phenomena, and began cataloguing the strange affairs in a somewhat disorganized binder. Now she will occasionally take a walk through the city in hopes of discerning such uncanny happenings, and jot them down in as much detail as she could manage before they dissipate from her short term memory. Maybe it's dangerous, perhaps too dangerous, but the draw of the seemingly supernatural superseded her survival instincts.
Katarin's binder remains hidden among her cluttered bookshelf, beneath piles of smudged staff paper and other various books on piano music of a particular type. She does not discuss it. She does not allow others to peruse the binder. However, she will ask others to walk her home at times, where she finds her presence threatened by these unusual happenings.
Swing - Through her years of learning piano, Katarin was exposed to various scores in different tempos and melodies, including 20s swing music. In an effort to perfect her playing to this spunkier style, Katarin investigated the surrounding elements to such music - from the flapper style at the time to swing dancing itself - and she fell in love. Katarin soon leapt into that hobby headfirst, both investigating youtube videos to learn the moves and even roping one of her brothers into helping her practice. While she still lived in Germany, she joined various swing clubs and managed to attend regularly despite her busy schedule. She loved the dance, the dance loved her, and she considered it an exhilarating method of exercise.
However, her brother soon drifted more toward shuffle dancing as a more solitary hobby, and the family moved to America, thus cutting her ties to the clubs she once visited religiously. Now that her brother is fully absent from the household, Katarin seeks another swing club squirreled away in Destiny City as a means to sate her urge to dance. And in that interim, she harbors no qualms in teaching a new acquaintance how to swing, if it means she has a partner for now.
Virtues:
Curious -- Katze, or cat in german, qualifies Katarin as a curious cat. She's always interested in seeing what other people are up to, catching up on current events, or even trying to partake in what any given friend is doing (usually she'll ask before she gets invested in 'helping out', though not always). She tends to ask a plethora of questions about her new topic of interest, usually while simultaneously trying to answer her own questions through investigation. It's a convoluted process, but whether through solicitation or raw discovery, she'll come around to fostering an understanding. Her curiosity precipitates seemingly at random, though it actually depends more on her interest in the person performing the activity rather than the activity itself.
This does not stop her from straight up playing 20 questions with an undeniably attractive individual.
Expressive -- Unlike her brothers, Katarin typically wears her heart on her sleeve. While that might be an unwelcome occurrence for some, the redhead is usually in an upbeat mood, which translates to smiles and an overall welcoming atmosphere around her. It allows other people to read how to approach her relatively easily, and most of the time others can guess how she would take news given her current emotional state. Additionally, she expresses her praise for others rather than internalizing it; if she finds someone working for her is performing excellently, she will pay them the compliments she feels they are due.
Passionate -- Katarin fosters an incredible drive for activities she's interested in. For example: she eats, sleeps and breathes piano whenever possible. She'll eat her oatmeal with a notebook of staff paper next to her, allow her fingers to dance on imaginary keys while she waits for the bus, write piano adaptations for some of her favorite contemporary songs, and even purchase novelties relating to music or piano for use in decorating her room. This all-consuming passion extends to any activity or idea she feels strongly enough about, and will result in her delving into it headfirst. Lately, aside from piano, she's becoming quite interested in these strange incidents involving teenagers accomplishing seemingly impossible feats...
Flaws:
Nosey -- Sometimes Katarin's curiosity becomes overpowering, to the point where she comes up as a prying annoyance more than a genuinely interested party. She'll press for information and practically interrogate people to obtain the answers she seeks, and she doesn't seem the least bit sorry about it, whether she actually doesn't realize she's tormenting someone with her interest or not. Additionally, if she asks a friend to go swing dancing with her and they decline due to other plans, she will press to find out what those plans were. If they're satisfactory, she'll drop the subject, but if she finds the excuse lacking, she'll be direct and ask if their chosen activity is more fun than swing dancing (which translates to asking if the other person is more interesting than her).
Bitter -- Katarin might normally be in a good mood but don't remind her of all the wrongs in the world. One of her brothers dropped off the face of the earth, her father's dead, her mom isn't coping and her remaining brother has become some kind of military-minded drone rather than the kid she grew up with. Now she's stuck in a foreign country where the customs don't really make sense, there's strange teenagers committing acts that are either unspeakable or impossible, monsters actually exist, and Destiny City is hell on earth. And let's not get started on the daily troubles of being Katarin Scholz, and how the bookstore is constantly in disarray and she can't make heads or tails of the business ledger anymore since Alois left and there's some incompetent new girl trying to pick up where he left off, the lights constantly flicker and the bathroom constantly smells like mold even though she bleaches it every day and all these are signs that point to the coming apocalypse. Don't get her started.
Intense -- If Katarin could focus, she would be organized. The bookstore would run like a well-oiled machine (even though she doesn't legitimately run it). Her life would be smooth sailing with nary a hitch to bother her. Except she's not - Katarin is both mentally scatterbrained and all over the map when it comes to physical organization. Her binder's a mess, she jumps from topic to topic using tangential transitions, and sometimes she even forgets to finish doing her hair in the morning. She considers it her black sheep gene, as both her brothers and the rest of her family manage an uncanny sense of organization. It's also the reason Katarin can't be trusted with finances, or the business ledger, or... Even keeping tabs on her social plans, because sometimes even the day for her get-together gets lost in the ether.
