It was an early morning and Angus was picking his way across a moist grassy field covered in the morning dew. His breath steamed across the cool air as he kept a steady gait, looking for a decent place for breakfast. He couldn't get enough of this new land he had come to, there always seemed to be more to discover the farther he traveled. From grassy fields to deep forests, tall mountains and sandy shores, he hadn't been to them all but he had heard tales of all these places from others he had come across. This new found curiosity, possibly mild obsession, with the area hadn't allowed him to interact much with others, he was more concerned with exploring and seeing what he could find. He didn't even think he'd introduced himself once yet. Perhaps he was getting a bit carried away... but he'd think about that later.

He'd made his way to a small hill that let him look out over some of the land, and the rising sun set the dew drops sparkling across the field. Thinking this was as good a place as any, he set to eating the fresh grass for breakfast. As he ate he kind of lost focus of his surroundings as he tried to plan his day. It was probably still too far to get to the sandy area with the ocean, he mainly wanted to see the sand because his ocean had mainly rocky shores instead. The mountains weren't too far but climbing up one would be a day journey and he didn't want to waste part of his day getting to the mountain itself. His thoughts continued to soar as he grazed in the morning light.

Large hooves hit the wet morning grass, and with every step the ground felt heavier than the last. The dew had soaked up into the thick hair that surrounded her hooves, and she couldn't help but drag herself deeper and deeper into it. After such a long journey, the wet cold felt nice. The mare reveled in the fact that she had finally come to her place of destination and could now, finally, relax. Although the journey wasn't one she was hesitant on taking, she soon realized after she left her homelands that the journey was well...not what she had anticipated. She had been told by her elders that these lands, the Kawani Lands, were of vast, wide open spaces; forests that stretched on as far as the eye could see; an ocean that went on for so long, it connected with the blueness of the sky; and mountains so tall it would take days to reach the top. Her family was there, they had told her, and it was time she was given the opportunity to seek them out.

And so she left. And so here she was; caught in between the mossy grass beneath her hooves and the trees on either side of her, exhausted from travel, and eager to seek out those she was supposed to call family. It wasn't going to matter to her how long it would take - she was in a new place, had a new home, and no one was going to tell her of her limitations. A sideways glance at her back told her that yes, her wings were still there and now...she'd have the opportunity to use them. She'd be free.

Although, she hadn't been in these lands for too long and already she was overwhelmed. No amount of description could have prepared her for what she saw. There were....Soquili everywhere. Everywhere. Each of them completely and vastly different than the one before him, in both inward and outward appearances. Some had wings even larger and more colorful than her own, while others had nothing at all. Some had funny ears or tails, like a deer, and others had talons or teeth as sharp as a monster. She was...impressed? Confused? Her own herdlands only had unicorns, she being the odd one out, and so this world had been nothing like she was expecting. Was she truly and honestly, finally able to...fly? Without being judged and labeled a freak? Oh how she longed to fly...

....If only she knew how...

Lost in another world, her hooves continue to carry her on their merry little way without so much as a second thought. The world that was going on all around her had gone completely blank at her mind traveled to the future; to a place where she could meet the ones that she called family. Her father's family. The ones who had wings. Perhaps...they could teach her to be free.

But what did they look like? Where could she start? These questions seemed impossible to answer...

She didn't even notice the stallion that stood only yards from her, as she trotted toward him.

Despite being lost in his own thoughts, the sound of hooves getting closer did eventually catch his attention and with his head still bent down toward the grass it turned to see who or what was coming. He froze. The creature coming at him was absolutely beautiful and it stunned him for a moment. Sure, there had been some flashy mares he'd seen in passing. Bright colors, long flowing hair, but none of that ever got to him like this natural beauty did. It reminded him of his own homeland, since all horses there were probably considered dull colors. Black, white, brown, nothing extravagant, but that's what he was used to and it seemed was still drawn to.

It didn't seem like she was paying attention to where she was going and since he was momentarily stunned to move out of the way, a collision was bound to happen. At least she wasn't running at him. Once she'd bumped into him, he grunted and it shook his thoughts loose as his head lifted up to look down at her. It was plain as day when her eyes cleared and clarity brought her back down to Earth, away from wherever she had been. He smiled at her and dipped his head a bit. "Good morning, miss. I apologize for obstructing your path." He took a few steps back to clear the invisible path she had been on when colliding with him. "I didn't realize I had chosen to have breakfast on a well traveled area of this hill," he teased playfully, still retaining the smile on his face.

Oh my stars...

Still miles away in thought, the mare hadn't noticed as she came up to the stallion standing before her. She supposed...she may have seen a body but it never quite registered with her that this body was another Soquili, and that she had just bumped into him until...

Humpff....

Shaking the thoughts away, the mare blinked a couple times, trying to regain all of her focus. What she saw next rather surprised her. He was, a striking dark shade of midnight black, much like the color of the night sky. He was quite easy on the eyes in all that midnight-black glory, and it took her breath away for just a moment.

Apart form his lack of wings, he reminded her of home. All of the colors that littered this land were wonderful sights, of course, but simplistic beauty...that was what was really in her heart. Home; a land full of natural, earthy tones. "Oh no, oh my-! It is me who should apologize, I was lost in my thoughts." Her breath had barely come back to her completely by the time she had spoke, and so it was barely more than a whisper. "I...just...came to these lands, myself so I guess we're both lucky we traveled this way this morning?" She giggled, matching the smile he wore with one of her own. This stallion was...well, other than a pleasant sight, also friendly. Were all the Soquili on these lands that friendly?

If so, she figured...she'd fit right in.

"The name's Sydnei, soldier. Yours?"

Angus chuckled, a deep rumbling sound in his chest. "Not to worry, miss Sydnei, I assure you I will recover from my ordeal. My name is Angus," he bowed his head in greeting. He raised a brow curiously at her mention of being new to the area and he had to wonder what a coincidence that was. A quick inspection told him she wasn't from his homeland, there were none that could fly or even had wings where he had come from. Definitely no horns on heads either. "You don't say. I happen to be new here as well, at least a month I believe. I'm afraid I haven't had a lot of time to meet many others though. This is perhaps the longest conversation I've had since I came here," he shrugged a bit sheepishly. "I've been a bit preoccupied with seeing the lands here, they're quite beautiful."

He caught himself looking at her again, clearing his throat he averted his gaze back out to the grassy fields now being bathed in morning sunlight. "If you're not rushing off anywhere you're welcome to join me for a bite to eat this lovely morning." Leaving the choice up to her he went back to eating for a moment. He had been wondering what could have clouded her mind so much that she could run right into another without realizing it. She was lucky he wasn't something that would eat her. He glanced up at her, wondering if those thoughts were still swirling in her head.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

It was strange, how similar the two were to one another, both quite polite and shy about their words. The mare blushed as the stallion kept his gaze on her, and did her best to regain her composure. "Oh well then, Angus, maybe this was a chance meeting after all. I don't blame you...these lands are quite lovely." A glance up at the mountains in the distance left a small twinge in her heart. "I wish I could see them from a different angle..."

At the mention of food, Sydnei giggled, her stomach growling almost immediately afterward. "Ah, it would appear my stomach is pleased with your offer." She dipped her head, ready to start her feast, until Angus peeked his head back up and offered up another question. She blinked. Well, if he really wanted to know...

"...I was just thinking about my well, family. My...extended family." What did they look like? She pondered, a small frown forming on her face as she stared at the stallion in front of her. Would they look like him? Big, burly Soquili with darker coats? Or would they be colorful? Would they have wings? So many questions...."On my father's side. I've never met them before but I was told they resided in these lands, thus...I'm here. I guess...I was thinking about what I'd do if I ever ran into them." And then, she smiled, flexing her wings as she continued to talk. She'd ask them how to fly, if she could.

"They're all I have, as far as family goes. No siblings...and my parents are both gone." Her mother, a full unicorn along with the rest of her herd, had mated with a wind a long while ago. They had accidentally fallen in love...neither one of them could help what had taken place between them, but it was forbidden in her mother's herd. So the herd-leaders banned the two young lovers from ever seeing each other again.

But like most other tragic love stories, that ban didn't stop them. They found ways to be with one another, and within a few months, Sydnei was growing inside her mother's womb. When the herd-leaders found out about the pregnancy, it was all the two young lovers could do to keep from breaking down. It was chaotic.

The Elder of the herd told the two young lovers that they were never allowed to come back into the comfort of the herd-lands. They were forever banned. It may have seemed like a harsh punishment for a simple accidental mating, but it was the way of the world, she had always been told. Her parents disobeyed the rules, and for that, they paid. Except, no one expected what happened to have actually happen, so the punishment the two young lovers received was worse...way worse.

That winter, when they traveled away from the herd-lands in search of a new home, was the worst winter they had seen in their lives. Complications of the pregnancy, mixed in with the cold caused both of the Soquili to fall ill. Then, her father passed. Caught between being alone and scared, her mother back-tracked to the safety of her own home, where she stayed until giving birth and then she too passed on. So Sydnei grew up, healthy and comfortable within the walls of her mother's herd, but she had no siblings. No parents. The closest family members were her mother's parents, but when they died, she had nothing.

And when they died, her Elders told her where she could find her father's family. It was time; time for Sydnei to find her own life.

"Well now, look at me, going off about my life to a stranger. Sorry Angus. So what brings you to these lands?" If he had a story, she wouldn't push it out of him, but she supposed...it didn't hurt to talk. Sometimes all someone needed was someone to talk to. Maybe they could help each other.

Sydnei smiled, anticipating his response. Maybe these lands were full of endless possibilities, and her story was just one of thousands.

His gaze followed hers to the mountains and briefly wondered what she had meant by the angle comment, obviously not knowing she couldn't use her wings. "Indeed, they're just as beautiful as my homeland but in their own way." He chuckled at her stomach rumble and gave her room to have some of the tasty grass he had been chowing down on.

Angus paused in his eating as she started speaking again. It seemed quite a personal tale so he lifted his head to give her his proper attention and listened to her story.

A story of family. He felt for her, he did, he never really had any family of his own. None even that he could have searched for. She did though, and that made her lucky. His head shook at her apology and he smiled at her, "Please, don't apologize. I'm honored you feel comfortable enough to tell me your story. I haven't been to too many places yet but have you heard anything else about them? Your extended family, I mean. There's a lot of land here, it seems like quite the task to find a few among so many. Not to discourage you, of course!" He backtracked, assuming how that must have sounded and the last thing he wanted as to push her away from finding her family. "I just hope for your sake that it isn't such a difficult task." His mouth opened again to continue but he forced himself to stop stumbling over his words, he'd probably done enough by this point. After clearing his throat he said, "I hope you find them, truly I do."

Now the attention was back on him. Oh boy. "I'm afraid my presence here isn't as noble as yours. I suppose I was just ready for a new place and a new adventure. I had a human friend from my homeland, and I will miss her dearly, but I thought it was time to start my own journey. Perhaps I will try to visit her again someday if I can, but at this point I'm just trying to see and do as many new things as I can." A smile spread across his face again as he looked out over the lands, just imagining what waited out there.

The rumbling in her stomach grew as she listened in return, and a quick thought passe through her mind - she must go and find some fruit before the end of the day. The grass was pleasant and all, but fruit reminded her of home. Blue eyes watched as their stallion companion struggled over the proper words to say, and Sydnei silently thanked the heavens she ran into someone so polite.

She wouldn't know what to do with herself, otherwise. The mare had no training in confrontation of any kind, and knew her mouth would eventually get her into trouble. Thankfully however, not yet. Maybe her family was guiding her along on this journey and would be there every step of the way. Maybe she just had to believe!!

"Sadly, no I have nothing to go off of. I don't even know their names...." Well, that sounded silly, the mare realized, and a blush peeked its way onto her cheeks as she looked away from the stallion in front of her. They were both dancing around what could have been an awkward conversation, and now it just seemed silly. "Thank you, Angus, I hope so too. I suppose I never took the time to think up a game plan...," the reddening of her cheeks deepened, but a smile found it's way through and she beamed at Angus, "how ridiculously foolish of me!"

With ears perked, the mare eagerly awaited the tale of Angus's past, the smile still beaming on her blushing face. A human? He meant, the ones that had two-legs and barely any fur or hair, right? Oh! Sydnei had heard tales, but that's all they ever were. "Oh I've never met a human before!" Where did he come from? Why did he have a human companion? So many questions ran through her mind but she kept them under wraps for the time being. It was, like she always knew, her mouth that would eventually get her into trouble. Just not today - not with this stallion!

"What was she like, your human? Oh! I'm so very envious! I want to meet a human one day!"
PostPosted: Tue Apr 08, 2014 4:46 pm

The reddening in her face was barely even noticeable on the darker parts of her face, but just by her actions he could tell she was blushing, and it only made her more adorable. He couldn't say that anyone had every blushed around him before. Was it because of him? Or just her situation? Probably best not to over think it... Any more than he already was.

Her smile was infectious and his grew wider as hers did. "No, not foolish. You were determined. Sometimes missions like that require action first and a plan later. It got you here, didn't it? Who's to say you would have made it this far if you had the chance to over think it? Maybe you would have doubted your cause and never come here. That would be foolish indeed because then I never would have had the pleasure of meeting you." Okay a bit over the top, but it was the truth! And he only wanted to make her feel more confident about her cause. If she doubted herself, she might never succeed, and he wanted her to find her happiness.

Angus hadn't expected the questions about his old friend, and was incredibly surprised to hear she had never met one before. They seemed to be all over his homeland, but much more sparse in these lands. Maybe they were sparse in her homeland as well. "She was, is, one of my best friends. We went on adventures together, and even had conversations. Perhaps a bit one-sided conversations since she can't understand me, but words weren't really needed for us to communicate properly. It's like she just knew what I meant to say sometimes. She was very brave [haha pun] and really didn't seem to be afraid of anything. A bit headstong and stubborn as well, when she set her mind to something, I couldn't even stop her." Thoughts of his human friend brought a smile to his face. They had many great times together, and he was grateful to her for giving him such a great life in the past. "Perhaps you'll get the chance to meet one. Not all of them are so kind, so you have to be careful, but others are really very fascinating creatures."

"I hope I haven't kept you from your journey. Please don't feel like you have to entertain me all day, I'll understand if you need to continue on." Would he though? It was selfish of him, of course, but he wanted to know more about her. For once, he wasn't so absorbed in the lands and seeking out new things. He wanted to know her. In fact, the thought of her coming with him brought a strange sense of joy to his insides, but there was no way he could ask such a thing. She barely knew him and she also had her own things to do.

She hadn't met anyone who had this kind of affect on her, and then yet again, the list of those she knew outside her homeland was slim to none. The thought of who this stallion was and what he could mean to her mulled over in the young mare's mind for a few moments, before quickly fading. It was too weird, far, far too weird to be thinking that way.

It had to be true that she was simply blushing and shy because he was handsome. Yes. That indeed was very true. That's all it was - she was just not used to someone so handsome.

That made much more sense.

Sydnei listened to Angus as he spoke positively about her cause. He made it seem like it was the most noble thing anyone had ever done, and it made her feel so good inside. Maybe she did have a purpose that stretched further than finding her family. Maybe, maybe there was another reason she was brought here! Oh! The possibility sounded so pleasant indeed!!"You mean like a, 'let-fate-drive-you' kind of an adventure? I've never had one of those before! It makes sense! I just wish I knew where to start..." And then, a little bit of truth-time. It may make things a little more awkward between them, but hey! A little truth never hurt nobody, did it? "I'm honored to have run in to you today, you've made this grand trip of mine a little more meaningful."

Blue eyes stared in wonder and in awe as Angus explained who his human companion was. This human, this girl...she sounded....heavenly. She sounded like the kind of companion you'd want around no matter what the situation, because she'd always just...be there. It brought warmth to Sydnei's mind knowing that there were humans out there like that. "She sounds wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I really do hope I do, honestly! It's such a strange sight to see something with very little fur." Maybe one day she'd have one of her very own!

And then, as if to suggest that the conversation got weird, Angus questioned their presence in front of one another. Or rather, as he meant it, he didn't want to intrude on anything that wasn't his business. But hadn't she made it his business, when she told him her story? Sydnei giggled, and quickly shook her head at the handsome stallion, "oh, no! Not at all! In fact, like I said, you've made it more enjoyable. You've given me a reason to continue my search. May I ask...did you have any specific paths you were following, Angus? Perhaps, if it's alright with you, we could walk together, for a bit?" Another blush, as she realized she was asking him to stay. It was a bit forward, but...oh well. "I mean, isn't it true that two pairs of eyes are better than one?"

vollyballrocks91

Perhaps there was some higher power working in his favor after all! If his grin could have gotten any bigger, it sure did at that moment. "I did not have any specific path for my own journey today, so it would be most enjoyable to have you along with me. I'll even let you choose which direction suits your fancy more." He waited until she chose, and then kept pace with her, sticking close to her side. "Indeed both of our eyes will be better. You'll have to forgive me I'm not entirely sure what I'll be looking for though. I assume those who resemble yourself? That would at least be something to go on. Otherwise we might be stopping anyone who crosses our path to give them an interrogation."

He really didn't think that would end well for anyone though. People being questioned usually got defensive, potentially hostile, not that he cared about them. Glancing over at the mare beside him, he knew he worried about getting her hopes up and having them dashed every time they decided to stop and talk to someone. He just couldn't allow that to happen. For whatever unknown reason, he felt himself wanting to protect her from anymore bad coming into her life. He'd take it all. Like arrows penetrating a shield, so she could remain unharmed.

A laugh rang out at her earlier comment. "You're right it is a bit strange that they don't have much fur. I never thought about it much before. Kind of like how a fish has scales or a bird has feathers, it's just the way they are. When you grow up around something it seems more normal to you." His human friend would have definitely like Sydnei. Perhaps been a little taken aback by her wings and horn, but once the shock wore off, they would love each other, they had to. "Perhaps some day I could have you meet her. I don't know if I'll ever be returning to that land, but you could come..... Not that you have to! That might be weird going across seas with a stranger to a strange land! Just, just pretend I never said anything! My it's a beautiful day isn't it??" To add insult to injury, he was so flustered he caught his hoof on a small stone and stumbled a bit. It was his turn to flush red under his dark fur.

Smooth.

Sydnei had noticed the grin, and thought it suited his face quite nicely - the larger the smile, the more the soul spoke through the body - right? Or rather, that's what she believed! Oh indeed!! She grinned back, just as vibrant, and looking in each direction, had decided on the best course of action within seconds of his suggestion, "north seems to be the best option, right? When you're lost, just follow the North Star!" Haha! Yes - indeed, they'd definitely just be wandering aimlessly until something else happened, or unless she could think of something to go off of - oh wait! She had wings! So did her father - and the herd! They had wings! Oh! Oh! How could she not have thought of that before! Oh! Grinning wildly, she turned to him exclaiming," "well, I suppose stopping anyone who crosses our path is a start, right? All the Elders told me was that my father haled from a large herd of winds, like myself. If anyone knows of that kind of a herd, maybe we can travel there?" Sydnei, while her companion was thinking of the dangers of speaking to strangers, didn't see it that way - call it ignorance or refusal to acknowledge evil, she simply say a new opportunity for conversation. If talking to strangers was what they must do to find their way, well then, bring them on! So long as Angus was following her along the way back, she didn't care who else she ran into.

Sydnei giggled in return, hearing her new found friend speak of home as enthusiastically as he was. He made it sound so brilliant - so amazing! These lands were just as new to him as they were her - but a new place with new faces and new experiences was something she'd never turn down. As he stumbled over his words, and then simultaneously literally stumbled, she blushed alongside him, either as sympathy or just for the situation itself - what hilarity! The two of them, standing there danced around each other, but it was never awkward. It was....comforting. Another giggle, and she gave him a bit of a frown, hoping his stumble didn't cause him any pain. Sydnei nodded happily, thinking of what the future could bring before she repsonded, "I'd like very much to visit your lands one day, and meet your human-friend. I'd like very much to find one of my very own! It sounds heavenly."

She wondered what kind of human she'd be attracted to. Obviously they wouldn't understand each other - but would they? Souls didn't needed words to communicate, and maybe she had a similar soul out there, just waiting for her? Oh! Remembering who was walking next to her, she abruptly changed her thinking....

A soft wind ruffled her feathers, and she glanced behind her, moving her wings with the breeze. It felt quite lovely, the wind, and she ached for the feeling of it between her feathers, just like all the others who were like her. It was her home, her childhood, and the lack of education in flying that caused her not to be able to fly, and there wasn't a day that went by that she didn't wish it had been different. Oh, well....

Sydnei was never one to complain - not ever! Oh goodness no! So she kept it to herself for as many years as she could, until she couldn't any longer. With Angus, he knew not her past, nor her herd, so opening up to him felt....fresh. With a sigh, he turned to the stallion, "it's times like these I wish I could fly," realizing she sounded a bit down, she grinned, and added, "- but having you by my side makes my travels a lot less lonely, thank you for coming with me!"

As they walked, the mare felt more and more at home. What if they were successful, and they found her father's herd? Would Angus then leave her? She silently hoped that wasn't the case.

Angus still didn't have the heart to tell her it probably wasn't safe to question every single individual they came across, but if he was with her then he could make sure she stayed safe no matter what. It wouldn't be too difficult to pick out the ones who had valuable information and those who they shouldn't linger around any longer than necessary. He gave her a reassuring smile. "Yes that would be a place to start at the very least. I find it hard to believe there would be more than a few herds of entirely winged horses." Not that he knew any better. Just because he came from a land of horses who remained entirely grounded, didn't mean this whole area couldn't be swarmed with winged ones. Best keep her positive though!

Something about picturing her coming with him to his homeland sent little dancing bugs through his stomach. It was a picture he greatly wanted to become a reality... Someday. He glanced over at her briefly, heat flooding his face. He really shouldn't be thinking about such things like taking her across the sea, or even just keeping her near him in general. When she found her family, that would probably be the end of their little journey, much to his heart's dismay. He would make the most out of this precious time they had for now.

His ears flicked and he turned to look at her outright at her almost wistful statement. "You cannot fly? But you have wings." Angus internally kicked himself. "I'm sorry, that was rude of me. I shouldn't just assume things. Why is it that you cannot fly? I hope you're not doing strictly for my benefit. I may not be able to fly, but I'm quick. I'm sure I could keep up with you at the very least!" He smiled at the fact that she enjoyed his presence as well, and tried to squash those skittering bugs that continued to tickle at his insides. He would have to reason with those bugs later and tell them no one should be getting their hopes up. Yet.

As the pair of them walked and talked, the mare's mind absently drifted away from the conversation, and back over to the idea of finding her own human one day. Would hers be female? Male? Would they be as talkative and friendly as she, or would her presence bring it out of them? And oh! Their hair! She envisioned a young girl with the curliest of hair, just like her own, adorned in flowers and ribbons, and oh-! This would be so much fun!! While she lost herself to dreamland, Angus talked, and unfortunately for the poor stallion, much of what he said was lost to her. She nodded politely, grinned and giggled when she felt it appropriate, but otherwise, the image of the little girl in ribbon was all she could hear.

It took a moment or two of silence for Syndei to recall just exactly what it was they were doing there, again. Ah, yes! Her father's herd. Angus. Talking. Budding friendship. Her mother's herd. Wings. Flying-! Oh! Flying! He had asked her about her flying...

Such a tough subject. If Angus knew the kind of demons burying beneath the surface of that subject, he may never have even opened his mouth. But, it was already said, so she shook herself out of her dreamland, and beamed her best impression of someone who was entirely unaffected by her...disability.

"Oh! Oh, no, no! I actually cannot fly. As in, I was never taught, I don't know how. If I could, I'd probably never leave the sky...," her voice trailed, a dreamy tone attached to the end as she tore her gaze upward. What she would give to feel the wind beneath her wings. Sydnei lifted them from their perch on her back, and flapped them back and forth, as if to show him their limitations. "That's about all they know how to do," a giggle, it was important to stay upbeat and positive, and not to let her lack of experience get her down. "The herd that raised me didn't have wings, and they didn't feel it necessary to find someone to teach me. So they're just decoration!" For such a raw topic, Sydnei thought herself doing a fine job of maintaining composure, but a fleeting thought told her it was probably due to the company she was keeping. Whichever the case, it was easy to talk about, and that was important.

"Oh, look at me, blabbering away again. Let's talk about you, instead! What do you do for fun, Angus?" She batted her eyes, her curly mane falling ever so slightly over them as she did so. If a small amount of harmless flirting was what it took to get him to stay, so be it!
