Blood was Still. His forarms ached, not from any real wounds as much as the frayed halos of awareness of the nerves. He could see the muscles of his forearms twitch under the fabric of his gloves as he gripped the cupola railing. Thraen looked out over the University he so oft patrolled round as either civilian or powered life demanded. The two were well blurred. Was Maia out tonight? He didn't feel any senshi aura's near, but that didn't mean much- just that there was not one very near and within range of his meager sense. He pushed at it in his mind and focus. The wood rail groaned under his hands. The Senshi of Gardens let it go, let the frustration pass. He considered the streets of the city, and where might be useful to guard that evening- the University, one of the schools, one of the shopping districts with civilians many and vulnerable, the shady districts and seedy streets. He had been through them all at one time or another. He pulled his phone and looked at the contacts briefly. He hadn't made any arrangements ahead of time, so Aventine was out of the question to get a hold of tonight. Eridanus? Penthesilea? Or go alone, as usual. It is late. Cold. He heaved a puff of breath into the chill like a dragon breathing fire, threw his legs over the rail and took to a challenging path to the roof of the biology labs building.

Babylon liked the roofs. They made him nostalgic for a time when he was younger and more naive and still thought that putting inflatable snowmen in stupid places was a valid form of art. God. What a ******** idiot he'd been. Maybe Babylon didn't miss it so much after all. But he did still like being up on the roofs! It gave him a good lay of the land. So there was that. He was surveying the roof of the biology labs when an order signature pinged on his mental radar. Mid-level. Moving fast. Babylon whirled around, watching the white-haired senshi land. Not one he'd met before, but then he'd only been back since relatively recently. There were a lot of people he didn't know. Babylon frowned slightly. It didn't look like there was anything pursuing the senshi, so what was the rush? "Where's the fire?" he called, jogging over. "Need any help?"

As soon as it was in range enough to sense, he felt the knight signature. It brought his conversation with Aventine to mind- her pleasant smiles and frightening Love Potion No. 9 spritzer. He hadn't expected or prodicted the Knight to catch him up, or in doing so to appear so quickly and so suddenly. The man was fast as Athene, even for jogging. But...scarred? Thraen pulled up quickly, standing still and balanced on a foot on the apex of a dormer. "Where-" "Isn't there? Enemies roam the dark and light, but they are not found standing still. " The offer of help so readily was almost suspect at this point. Thraen watched the other with flame eyes wide and searching like a raptors. "I often find myself in need of help, being no kind of warrior. Are you?"

Babylon stepped carefully along the apex of the roof, and he looked the senshi over (as one did, when meeting an unfamiliar superhero in the dead of night). The boy's dialect was odd, and he caught himself wondering if he spoke like that all the time, or if it was sort of a Batman voice thing. "Of a sort," he replied, not consciously meaning to play along, but darn, it was kind of infectious. "I'm known to do some damage," he said, dangling his lantern at his side where it did absolutely no good. He was also known to get his a** kicked by girls a rank below him, but that didn't really need to be said. The senshi, he noticed, had a scar across his face that made the one Babylon sported look... somewhat less impressive. "Babylon Knight of Mercury," he supplied, nodding to the senshi. Pageantry could be fun sometimes, he decided, if they were in no true hurry. "I do my best to keep the university grounds clean. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking to?"

Thraen's gaze shifted from the lantern, whirring thoughts momentarily with just what one did in combat with such an implement. It brought a few questions to mind, comparing it to the diffuser. "Thraen of Gardens, " he spoken the words dreamlike, gaze moving from lantern up the man's arm, across his chest and returning to face and eyes. "I have not met many knights, One...Knight. A squire, was one. Nysa and Aventine. " "I have not met a Senshi called Mercury, either. Nor Venus. But your titles include fealty to such heavens?"

When Thraen mentioned his sphere, Babylon suddenly made sense of his unusual, colorful uniform. It suited him, he decided, more than some other senshi's uniforms suited their spheres. Nothing was ever guaranteed to be self-evident. "I've met... a few," he said. "Pages, knights, squires. Someone mentioned a Templar to me recently, but I've never actually seen him in the flesh." Well, once, a long time ago, before Templar was even part of the war's vocabulary. "We're an ancient order," he explained. "Sworn to protect the ancient royal houses. Polaris has knights and a senshi. So does Chronos. I've never seen reason to seek my princess." He didn't know why. He had others to serve. "I'm the latest in a long line of Babylon Knights," he shrugged, hefting his lantern demonstratively. "We keep the light. See that it never goes out." He was starting to think this was a metaphor. Somehow. "Were you looking for a fight tonight, Sailor Thraen?" he asked. He gestured to his own face, tracing the line of the senshi's scar to where it would have intersected with his own. "It looks like you already found one."

"Keepers of the Light. So are we all, who do not fail in the testing. Is yours of a more magical sort? Aventine's perfume bottle did not seem much for attacking. A lantern could be analog to a flail, " Thraen shifted on the dormer, waging with himself. Then he hopped closer, to conversational distance of a handshake to the Knight. "But it seems a poor use for something so elegant." "I have heard of some of the royals. It is good to have names to attach to the rumors- Polaris and Chronos. Your Mercury is a Princess, or woudl be as well? Are knights also connected to whatever ended things a thousand years ago? " "I do seek battle. Every night I am not too wounded to go out, or too spent. Five days a week as I can. " Two spent to pain. "I find those who choose to stand by the graces of sin and offer them choice- throw down the laurels of theft and murder. " Or be prevented from it by force.

"Sort of," said Babylon, glancing at his lantern. He'd never found much use for his magic, and always hoped he might grow into something stronger. What he could do just didn't match what his ancestor expected him to. "It does an accuracy boosting sort of thing, but it's not much use. I have to keep it steady, and it doesn't work on me, only on allies." "I do use it as a flail," he admitted, watching Thraen land. "Which I agree is poor use for it. I'm certain I bring shame upon my ancestors." Well, he was certain of that anyway, for reasons totally removed from his misuse of a sacred knightly relic. "Mercury would be a princess," he agreed. "I mean, I think she would be. I think she was, when she lived. A thousand years ago, perhaps. I've got no reason to wait for her to appear. If you wait for princesses, you'll waste your whole life. Or worse, you'll find a false prophet." That was the Jovians' teaching, anyway. Ares had been a false princess. And Europa had been so sure of Chibimoon only for Chibimoon to abandon them all... "I don't need her in order to fight," he shrugged. "My light is an unbroken chain." His grandfather had smuggled family documents about the order of Babylon out of Nazi-occupied Poland. That seemed like as good a reason to fight as any long-dead Princess. "Yours is a worthy quest," he said to the senshi. "I'm delaying you from it, aren't I? I'm sorry."

"Worthy are words, and more lasting, traded in wisdom and waiting over the strength of steel. Armor rusts, weapons break, blood ages....but words can endure passed from page to page or song to song. " "I was not meant for battle, Babylon of Mercury. Speaking with you does not waste my time if it turns out that there is Order that can come of it. I do not look for princesses or false prophets. But I do look for change. It is no accident that the militaries of history and the militaries of the modern world follow a system of clear hierarchy. It is efficient in war. " "Combat relies on the instincts of the midbrain, not the forebrain. Conditioning, classical and operant, and clear hierarchy as in a military, or monarchy. We play chess with children, but some among us demand fool republic or don't think of systems at all in their rattles for peace at the cost of lives they don't have to pay. " "If Princess, or Prince, is too much to swallow, then call it Shogun- the war leader. But Order...all of it... we need a figure head and a strong foundation on which to build something both understandable and effective. We are losing too many to confusion-defection-death. " " 'Tyranny is wont to occur not less but more frequently on the basis of polyarchy than on the basis of monarchy.' "

Babylon nodded slowly, trying to absorb everything Thraen was saying - and he was saying quite a lot. "No one has enough power to," he said, after considering it for a long time. "There are princesses, but they don't assert control. Chronos has her court and doesn't assert power beyond the Zodiacs. The other royals..." he shrugged. He didn't know them well enough to make a judgement. "There are teams. Large ones, even." He was part of one, but the Jovian court swore allegiance to no princess and no true leader, even - they swore allegiance to themselves. Which, if he understood Thraen correctly, was part of the problem. "As for the knights, I don't think any of us know our true place in this war, besides that the Negaverse is what we become should we fall. With so much of our order consumed by Chaos, it's hard to organize." And then there was just the issue of everyone having too much ******** ego to get behind one leader and go with it, and he, personally, was as much contributing to that issue as anyone else. "That and the majority of Order is a bunch of ******** prima donnas and I include myself in that number," he admitted. "But I know confusion and defection and death." Babylon tapped the scar on his cheek. "I've lost a lot in this war because I was selfish and because I was cowardly," he said. "So it's about time I stop being both those things."

"I would know what you and others know. What these Princesses in their ivory towers know. What is thought. Why it is that people who 'protect' peace will not lay down their egos to achieve it. Or why they will not spend some months in books together to find a way to make alliances formal and clear, in a war that has lasted years already. " "Research is my greater strength. The ruling princesses, if they would rule as a military force, could become the leading council of the senshi. The Knights could elect their leaders. The city could be divided in wards and watches set. Partners assigned so that a great family is united and all our members defended from death alone ...or worse. Their starseed broken. " "I have thought long. I would speak with them all, if they would hear Gardens. What is a garden but the ordering of pieces into a greater whole vision? Be that vision one for fairness, for harvest, for meditation or for rehabilitation." "Do you know the teams that exist?"

"You'd have to find the princesses first," said Babylon, frowning, because finding the princesses seemed to be half the trouble. "Or short of that, if you're looking for someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of everything, find Zirconia. She's like Switzerland, but a person. If you want to improve your chances of her liking you, she's super-partial to scotch." He was all for organizing - should someone come up with a way to do it. Order was so sprawling, and with no reliable infrastructure or leaders, it seemed daunting to even conceptualize how to bring everyone into step. The Negaverse seemed like they'd had that infrastructure "I know the Jovians," he said. "They're um, mostly they're senshi from the moons of Jupiter, couple of Jupiter knights, handful of miscellaneous senshi, at least one cat, and me, for as long as they'll tolerate me." Which honestly boggled his mind, that Valhalla hadn't dumped him on his a** yet and told him to find a new team to hang onto. "I know there must be others, but they're breaking up and forming all the time, and to be perfectly honest I just got back into town a few months ago after a lengthy absence, so I'm not the best person to ask," which was embarrassing to admit, but it was going to come out sooner or later.

The name of a source of learning and the information of a not of politics was appreciated. Thraen closed his eyes and nodded his head gratefully to the Knight. "I will look for her. The scotch might be harder, since I'm not twenty one, but it has to be easier then other battles." "Proximity breeds both contempt and community, I guess, " Thraen considered Babylon openly. And what, then, does a servant of Mercury have as connection to a handful of Jupiter and Jupiter senshi?"Then you are on a team. Would your team be willing to discuss such things as this situation with an outsider? Or are your philosophies against unification on larger scale? There is the very real problem of resolving philosophical differences. More than once I've had other senshi stand for the enemy against me. " "I don't know if treating with me enough might be a political blunder, " There was no use to hiding that part of the information about himself. Left unsaid Athene or some other could try to bring it up like some elicit, blackmail mark. "But I haven't gotten the impression that there's enough of a community for that sort of politic to exist.

"I could bring it up with them," said Babylon, which was easier said than done with a group as large and spread-out as the Jovians "I don't think they're against unification as a whole - they're always talking about allying with other groups, but it's not like they have a true distinct leader." Were Princess Jupiter to appear tomorrow, he didn't know how the Jovians would react. It was impossible to say - they'd gotten this far by not counting on her ever appearing. He noticed he was talking about the Jovians like he wasn't part of them. And then, having noticed this, continued to do it. "They call their philosophy Many-as-One. They make decisions as a group, act as a unit. It keeps the egos in check, as far as I can tell, but then you've got your thing about polyarchy and this might be exactly that." He shrugged. Babylon had always felt like his position within the Jovians was tenuous at best, even though Ganymede and Valhalla had made the four thousand-mile trek to Fairbanks just to bring him back. "I've got to warn you, you probably won't meet the whole team because it's like over ten people and getting that many senshi in one place at one time is begging for an ambush. Best I can probably do is score you a meeting with two, maybe three, tops. Probably senior members. Buttwings, you know?" Least he could do was try.

"I wish there were some way to mask signatures, " he sucked his teeth. "If meeting on Earth, I expect so. But initial meeting is one thing. Talking can be done elsewhere, if they're willing. One or two at most, I expect, but I'd be willing to take others to Thraen to talk safely. Or to go some other place. " "The Negaverse and the Dark Mirror have not, nor I expect care, to reach there." "All governments have their downsides. Complete democracy is great at peace and if everyone is true to purpose and similar in desire. It bogs down too quickly for swift and effective gorvern on a large scale, as your observance- as the greek states in their loose alliance fell one by one to Roman conquest." So we all already fall."Is there some way to contact you? Aventine and I just set up email since she had no phone, mundane but effective. Nysa...said something cryptic about if I ever got a message...but I don't know how he expected to send it unless by the USPS."
