Shielding his eyes from the bright rays of the sun, Keith walked down the ramp from the ferry to the port. He put on a pair of sunglasses and surveyed the surroundings. Furrowing his brows, he recalled the handwritten letter taped on the door of his unit. He had figured that it was one of his grandfather's crazy antics when he saw it but he had never expected it to be what it actually was. In fact, it was a threat. His grandfather had written that he was to take a month long vacation in Greece as an advance birthday present and he was to spend it without worrying about doing or thinking anything related to work.
Keith glanced back at the private ship that had brought him to the small island of Santorini, shook his head and looked in front of him. Repeatedly, his grandfather and colleagues had addressed to him their worry over his workaholic attitude, often neglecting his own health just to complete a project. Although, he had denied that every single time. He reasoned that he was simply worried that his grandfather would overwork himself with all the matters concerning the group of companies and that he would soon take over that empire in a matter of years. Fame and fortune comes with hard work, his only family had often reminded him.
Spotting the car that was prepared to take him to their vacation house as what was indicated in his grandfather's letter, Keith walked over and got in. He tried to make himself comfortable as they went. It wasn't the ride that was making him uneasy but rather the conditions set by his grandfather. In the letter, it was stated that the old man wanted to see his great grandchildren before he died and reminded Keith that he wasn't getting any younger. He wasn't sure whether it was the old man's health or his love affairs that his grandfather was concerned about but he hoped for neither. He was almost 25 but it was hardly the age most men get married.
Finally arriving, they went into the garage of a house with a modern architectural design. His grandfather's men had bade their leave, completing the task of sending him their safe and unscathed. He simply nodded his head in response, before taking a look at the place he was to be staying for a month. It's exterior was painted mostly with white like most of the buildings they had passed by. Carrying his small luggage with him, he entered.
The first thing that came to mind when he entered was that it's interior was spacious. Leaving his bag by the door, he walked around to inspect. A counter with several stools connecting to the kitchen on the left was the nearest from the entrance. The staircase could be found opposite to it. Walking further, the living room was furnished with two seat sofas facing each other and a wall mounted TV. The floor was a wood parquet ending at the division between the interior and the veranda overlooking the view of the sea.
Despite it all, Keith still felt troubled. What was he to do with his month long vacation? He leaned over the railings in the veranda, looking at the buildings at a lower elevation, contemplating his schedule of activities for the next 30 days.

With a basket full of fresh vegetables and fishes Elpida was walking towards the house. Today was the big day. Her master would come home and she would have to be his assistant, maid or whatever he wanted for 30 full days. Elpida was living at this house since she became a teenager nad the house was bought with the condition she would keep clean, tidy and livable until one of the masters decided to come and spend their days there. She was receiving a check every month which was used to pay the bills, taxes and any repairs plus some basic things for herself such as clothes and her daily food. Today, she was a bit out of her daily routine due to her excitement she would finally have company but also nervousness. What if her master was all grumpy? She heard it would be the grandson of her normal master so he should be close to her age, but what if he wasn't getting satisfied? Her old master was a good company as long as she had everything done and she had food on the table. She tried not to be negative though and instead bought some of the best fish, which was Riki that day to make a welcoming lunch for him. Climbing the couple of steps she needed for the door she took the keys out of her pocket but found it already unlocked...oh no! was he here already? She didn't expect him in less than one more hour. She opened the door and closed it carefully "master?"she asked, which was one of the few words she knew in english. That was another problem. Despite her education school was only able to teach her the basics in english, so she knew how to say simple phrases such us "hello", "thank you", "how are you", "what's your name", etc, but she didn't know many things. Normally she was trying to avoid speaking to he master unless necessary, but this one might be disappointed for her lack of language. She went to the kitchen table letting the basket there and walked around to find her master. He probably was a very silent guy because all she could hear were the wind outside the window, the noises from the market, the seabirds and of course the waves. She walked further tot he balcony..he probably didn't know the house so he should be there...if he just came. She was right of course. At the veranda she could see a young man and like she guessed he was about her age. She made sure she was presentable and walked towards him "master"she repeated to alert him of her presence "hello..welcom!"she said trying to remember the greeting words ...Damn she had a long time without practicing her speaking. The words were all in her mind but she couldn't quite remember everything now so she went to the one she knew best "my name is Elpida...i...live..wt- you"she said although the letter 'd' was lighter that he was used to, pronounced the Greek way obviously..it looked more like the "th" in "that". She didn't know what else to say so she threw in the other words she knew "you like fish?"she asked him and noticed his suitcase was still there so she hurried to it and took it in her hands starting to walk to the stairs "i take that" she told him so he wouldn't think she was stealing it "you come" she added wanting to show him his bedroom. She had the prepared the master bedroom which had a balcony outside so he could sit there , enjoy his coffee maybe and look at the view.

Keith reiterated his plans during his stay - have a tour around the small island, learn their culture and taste the local dishes. He recalled that his grandfather had assigned someone to be his companion during this sudden vacation and felt a little troubled, remembering that this person was going to be female. Business wise, it was easy for him to get along with them but he had no luck in trying to pursue a romantic relationship after that particular incident during his childhood years, although he denied that there was any sort of trauma cause by it.
He was in deep thought that he failed to notice that someone had entered the house after he did. It wasn't until the woman called him master for the second time that he turned around, noticing her. With a welcome, she introduced herself with a slightly different accent that he accustomed to hearing. He was left in confusion for a moment when she asked if he liked fish, rushed back to take his luggage and telling him to come with her up the stairs. He quickly gathered himself and took the heavy bag from her hands as he followed her, leading him into one of the rooms.
Keith put the bag aside, surveying the room before looking back at the girl. He reckoned that this was the girl that his grandfather had mentioned in his letter but he had never assumed that he was going to call him master. "Are you my grandfather's employee?" he interrogated, not recalling that she had worked under his department. He has assumed that he probably know who he was so he didn't give her his name. Instead, he said, "Please don't call me master. 'Sir' would be fine..." However, remembering the old man's words that he should be a friend to her, he added reluctantly, "Or call me Keith."
He stared at her for a moment, trying to see if he had ever met her anywhere but she really didn't look familiar. "Pleasure to meet meet you," he nodded his head, trying to be polite.

Elpida made sure the room was perfect and walked to the balcony door opening it , after pulling the white curtain aside , so he could see the view and tell her if he wanted her to change anything in the furnishing. However, she looked at him confused when he asked her something about his grandfather..he probably meant her other master right? What's with him? She couldn't understand the other word he said..or words..she couldn't distinguish that yet. However, there was still the problem of her being unable to answer to the question, so she looked at him and shook her head lightly "no understant"she said with her special accent, but seemed happy to understand his next words...well...she could figure out he disliked master..and instead suggested something like "sear" and "keeth" which was his name as she remembered " yes sear" she said pronouncing it wrong but considering the fact she indeed recognized it as a word was some achievement. Her happiness though didn't last for long as his next sentence was mostly unknown too " meet..too" she said with a smile assuming he meant that they know met each other or that he liked this happened! Oh well, she would get used to it later. When silence fell again he tried to make him feel like home so she said "i cook....fish...you...see aroun" she told him trying to tell him she would go to cook , in order to have the lunch ready on time, while he could explore around and be familiar with the places of the house "call me, you like" she added then gently walked out of the door to give him his private space while she went to the kitchen taking the fishes and going out to the yard to clean them from their scales and their insides while he would be ready. Soon a couple of stray cats had arrived and she was giving them the things she didn't need until she was all done! She then took the fishes, washed them and went back inside. She started to grill them and while she was waiting she took from the fridge some fresh squid he had found early in the morning in the fish market and filled it with greek cheese which was called feta, rice and peppers. She knew that as he would be here for a week he would like to taste their food. So why not make some to him now? He was probably hungry as well from the trip up to here! (uh..i decided to change her name...i hope you don't mind ^^)

Irina96 Nah... I don't mind. biggrin When the girl shook her head and spoke, Keith immediately realized that she was trying to tell him that she didn't understand. Initially, he simply thought that she was just bad with making sentences. He gave a little smile back at the girl, feeling a little sorry for her. Normally, it was just him who would suffer from the old man's games but it seems that there are two of them on this one. And, he assumed that there will be difficulties in trying to communicate with each other.
Thinking deeply, Keith didn't notice the silence between them until the girl broke it. From what he understood, she was trying to tell him that she was going to cook fish for him and to call her if he liked. He answered with, "Okay".
Alone, he wandered about his room. The bathroom was complete - a bathtub, a shower, a toilet and a sink. Back in the room, he opened another door that lead to a small walk-in closet. There were a few sets of clothes, suits and casual wear both, an addition to what he had brought for his stay there. He walked to the balcony and looked around. The view there was the same, but he could see if there was anyone in the veranda if he looked down. He saved the bed for last and found it just comfortable to sleep in.
After having done checking his room, Keith sat on his bed, contemplating on what to do. It made him uncomfortable that he wasn't doing any work but his grandfather, Calen Cowen, had repeatedly said in his letter that he wouldn't be able to get back to America if he disobeyed. With a sigh, he decided that it was best to just befriend the girl.
Keith immediately found her, working behind the counter where the kitchen. He silently walked towards and sat on one of the stools, recalling the girl's name. He thought that trying to know who she was would be the best course of action since she seem to know who he was.
"Elpi...tha,"he spoke, unsure how she pronounced her name earlier. "Do you know my grandfather? Are you working for him? Are you a local?" He paused, and thought that she might not totally understand it. He decided to repeat his questions, adding hand gestures as he did. "You know Calen Cowen? You work for him? You live... here?"

Elpida was thinking of what to make for dessert then decided some yogurt and local honey with a fruit salad would be the best option. She walked over to the fishes and turned them around then went tot the fridge retreating some yogurt then went back to the counter. She took a bowl , throwing most of it in then throwing some honey as well and mixed it. She thought it would be a nice touch to put some nuts in there , so she did exactly that and placed her first dinner in the fridge to keep it cool. Now it was time for her second dessert! She took some fresh fruits such as apples and grapes which grew in the island and started removing the seed from the inside and cutting them into small pieces before throwing them into another bowl. She was just washing some more grapes when she heard her name called by her master. She turned her head , eager to see if he wanted her to do something for him. Upon hearing his words she bit her lip lightly as once again she couldn't understand everything. She was ready to repeat her known phrase "no understad" but thankfully he rephrased into simpler words and her eyes lit up as she recognized all the words and could finally reply to all of his questions "Calen...master , come here summer"she said "i work, do like he say..make him happy"she tried to explain "i live here. Master take me very yang. Go father, mother, baby, take me"she threw some more apple pieces in her bowl and now put some in the mixer to make a juice as a syrup in her salad "master say yes, i live here, clean, cook, keep house good and he come to be happy...no work for him...only me"she added some more details then covered her salad with a plastic plate and took it to the fridge as well. She now started to make a salad to accompany lunch. Fresh tomatoes, grapes and onions produced by locals as well. After adding some feta and olive oil she took it to the table "food ready...clean hands"she told him and took the fishes off the fire serving them into a big plate "sear want eat alone?"she asked him wanting to know if he wanted to eat with her or alone since she was not equal to him. She placed a plate and silverware then a bottle of wine and a glass " Chios"she pointed to the wine naming the island it was produced to.

Watching her work about, Keith wondered if he would be able to eat all that she prepared for lunch. It wasn't about the taste, but rather the amount of dishes she prepared. He was so used to having a tight schedule, in which he would eat only a small amount or skip it.
Keith listened and tried to piece together her answers. From what he understood, his grandfather would come in summer and she would help him around with whatever he wanted done. It seemed that she started working at a young age and might have really liked working for the old man. It was good to know that he wasn't going to be entirely clueless around during his stay. When she told him to wash his hands, he left his seat for a moment to do so before returning back to it. "You'll eat with me, together... eat at the same time," he answered trying different ways of saying it. He gestured for her to sit next to him.
"Cheers...?" he asked when Elpida pointed at the wine, thinking that was what she said. He added, "Just call me Keith." He waited for her to take a seat beside him before he started trying out the food she prepared. He took a bit of the fish and squid and found it quite delicious. "This is good," he complimented.

(i hope you didn't forget about me! sorry for that!) Elpida nodded at him when she was told he wanted her company. Her other master liked eating with her sometimes too, although most of the times they were both silent. Either way he was to congratulate for the words she knew in english...him and a fellow tourist that had once came to spend a month to the house nearby and they used to meet each morning as he was going to have breakfast outside and she was going to the market for her daily shopping. She was taught some more basic words, which she made sure to use regularly...for example he was responsible for the fact she understood what her master meant by saying 'cheers' and she quickly shook her head "no..no..Chios...uhh...wait"she said and went to her room coming back with a folded map of Greece. She opened it and pointed at an island above Dodecanese "Chios...wine from"she told him finally wanting to make him understand what she meant. She left the map to him to study and she went to brought another dish and silverware for herself setting it across of his and sitting down as well. Her face became brighter when he told her he liked her food "thank you!"she nodded approvingly and waited for him to give her permission to start eating as well...or try everything first to make sure he liked them or if there was any dish he wanted her to take away. There was this chance as well. His grandfather for example had made her take away a dish which contained mashed bread with garlic which was a rather traditional dish of her country. He seemed to detest garlic.

Irina96 I haven't forgotten the role play although I do need to read again to remind me of what went on. Haha~ Keith looked at her wondering what she wanted to tell him when she left. He didn't wait for too long before she returned with something in hand, unfolding it to reveal the map of Greece. He looked closely at the area she was pointing as she made her point that what she meant to say that the wine was from Chios. "Oh. Their wine must be really good," he spoke, although it was more to himself. He studied the map again, seeing how far it was from the island he was currently in. He had known Greece of its mythology, philosophers and mathematicians and nothing else. He found it somewhat educational to be learning through first hand experience and wondered if this was one of his grandfather's intention. Answering his own theory, he shook his head knowing that his grandfather's primary concern was for him to take a break and placing him in an area he wasn't familiar.
Seeing that Elpida had sat down, Keith folded the map and set it aside. He looked over the different food choices on the table before looking back at her. "Let's eat," he gestured before initiating and taking a piece of the grilled fish and of the squid on his plate. He also took some from the salad although he intentionally placed aside the tomatoes and onions. He started eating his meal silently but soon felt a little awkward. Most of the time, it was just him alone so he wasn't bothered with such.
"So...ummm... What are the good places to visit?" he asked. He found it a challenge trying to gauge how much English the girl was able to understand. It was different with the clients he had met, most who had difficulty with the language brought translators. Their current situation, however, where only the two of them living in the same house and he thought that it would be wise to have a mutual understanding of things. "Would you be my guide?" he added, thinking that it was the best choice he had.
