Earth ponies
Earth ponies are a ground based pony. They have no extra distinguishing characteristics, and from the surface seem fairly basic.
Though they lack the ability to consciously cast spells like unicorns or to fly and walk on clouds like Pegasi, their connection to nature makes them "just as necessary" as and "perhaps more important" than the other ponies. Earth ponies are known for their strength and a good, true heart.
According to the tales of Hearth's Warming Eve Earth ponies were responsible for tilling the grounds and creating food and resources necessary for everypony to live. Though in the end it took cooperation between all ponykind to succeed, one can not dismiss the value of an earth pony's humble strength and determination.
In relation to earth and animals many earth ponies are either farmers, or descended from farmers. Earth ponies make up a large portion of any farming community, and in what could be called the earth pony's capitol, ponyville, things such as "winter wrap up" are still done manually, even with access to flight and magic. Earth ponies serve to remind everyone what great deeds can be accomplished through hard work and a good spirit.
Not all earth ponies are farmers though, as in modern day equestria there are many roles for anypony to fill, regardless of their heritage. Furthermore there are more and more non-earth ponies working in very earth based jobs.
Earth ponies posses a diverse range of talents and capabilities, as previously mentioned. One recurring trait, however, is their physical prowess. Physically very powerful, Earth ponies are capable of performing incredible feats of strength with little or no visible strain, and enjoy long-lasting stamina as well.
Earth ponies have been seen using their tails as if they were a prehensile fifth limb. This ability allows for them to engage in fine manipulation, for example controlling a lasso or operating a camera.
In addition, several Earth ponies have been seen displaying an excellent sense of balance, stacking and coordinating several objects on top of one another without difficulty.
Earth ponies come in all shapes and sizes. They are one of the most versatile of equstria's races, and have adapted to many different terrains and lifestyles. Thick coats, thin coats, stocky bodies, short bodies...! The varieties seem to be endless.

Unicorns
Unicorns are characterized by their horns and their ability to perform magic. That is that Earth ponies and Pegasi have passive forms of magic, but unicorns can actively perform magical feats and have some level of conscious control(dependent on practice) over their magic.
As the name suggests, all unicorns have a single long horn protruding from their forehead which glows when their magical powers are used. Although they are associated with their magic, a unicorn's horn is strong and sharp enough to have mundane uses; such as penetrating objects or used in areas of physical defense or aggression such as charging.
Most unicorn magic revolves only around their natural talents (e.g. their jobs, hobbies, etc.) and Unicorn magic itself does not happen without reason. Unicorn magic requires concentration and effort. The horn itself is the source of magic, and if a unicorns horn is damaged or altered in any way the unicorns magic will falter. Unicorn magic can be improved with practice, and young unicorns may have sporadic and uncontrollable surges of magic until their ability is perfected. Unicorn magic is also used to manipulation of objects, as all unicorns have the ability to levitate items.
Unlike Earth ponies Unicorns rarely possess any feats of physical prowess. They are low in stamina, not entirely fast, and often use intellect to make up for brute strength. Even in the tales of Hearth's Warming Eve, unicorns used their magic to control the sun and moon before the rule of Celestia and Luna, showing great magical power and intelligence. '
While many unicorns enjoy the hustle and bustle of Canterlot, their official home range is called "unicorn range' west of Canterlot, all the way over to Tall Tale.
Unicorn's have a variety of traits, interbreeding has brought them closer to simply ponies with horns that you often see in equestria, but sometimes throw-back recessive traits appear. These include: cloven hooves, ankle tufts, lion-like tails, and long, thin beards within the males. Unicorns may have one or two of these traits, or none. Rarely do you see a unicorn these days with all of them, but it is possible. You may see these ponies referring to themselves as the "Omminari", or true unicorns.

Pegasi
Pegasus ponies, or Pegasi, are ponies characterized by their wings and their ability to fly, walk on clouds, and control the weather. Pegasus ponies have a passive kind of magic that allows them to walk on clouds and manipulate the weather. Pegasi naturally walk, sit, and lay on clouds, but unicorns and Earth ponies cannot do so, however other creatures with wings hold this same talent of passive magic.
Hearth's Warming Eve, and its members were responsible with maintaining the weather in return for food that was harvested by the Earth ponies. Pegasi were regarded as being a militaristic, organized tribe, with an established fighting force and a home in the clouds filled with war-themed monuments. In the reenactment, Commander Hurricane refers to the Pegasi as "a mighty tribe of warriors".
As such a pegasi's cultural heritage holds value to many sporting events and place a high value on teamwork, speed and agility. The wonderbolt academy is a grand example of this, functioning as a sort of ROTC for pegasi. And the wonderbolts themselves share a striking resemblance to the blue-angels air shows.
Pegasi wings are shown to have potential for tremendous strength; athletically-trained Pegasi can support most of their body weight on them. Some Pegasi use this ability to carry out a exercise regimen known as "wing-ups" (similar to push-ups). Pegasi wings can generate enough propulsive force to carry masses several times the Pegasi's body weight even when they are not flying (such as powering wheeled vehicles, wagons, etc). Alternatively some pegasi are seen using their wings as hand-like appendages.
Pegasi traditionally live in cloudsdale, and at the very least attend classes there. However Pegasi are scattered throughout equestria working to keep the weather in check and are shown being obligated to various maintenance tasks, such as getting water to the weather factory.

Alicorns
Alicorns are ponies which contain all 3 of the original race's talents. The strength and heart of the earth pony, the intelligence and magic ot the unicorn, and the speed, agility, and organization of the pegasi. Alicorn have both a unicorn horn and Pegasus wings, and make up the royalty of Equestira.
In turn they also hold all the same magical properties as Earth, pegasi, and unicorn. Both in passive magics and controlled magic, dependent on their role within equestria and their own special talents.
Alicorns are often identified as royalty, but the title of "princess" is one that is earned in Equestria. While royalty exist in relation to the princesses, they are not inherently alicorns. The status of an Alicorn is one that is earned only by ponies who show all three of these characteristics and is bestowed upon them.
Still some are given this rank earlier than others, such as Princess Cadance and Prince Léon who are both shown as having all traits quite early, so there is some level of suggestion that there may be destiny based appearance (predicted rather than responsive) of an alicorn's status.
((OOC note: some alicorns are observed in the series but are described as animation errors, so they will not be considered canon. ))

Crystal Ponies
Crystal Ponies are distinct from other ponies by their shiny, gradient manes and tails, and most of the time, polygonal shaped irises. Otherwise they are very similar to earth ponies in appearance. Crystal ponies are also noticed for their elaborate hair designs, preferring up-dos and fanciful accessories.
They have their own type of passive magic, much like a prism they take in positive feelings and amplify them into a wider gradient. (most notable is love) In the same fashion their more negative feelings can have equal power and diminish their brilliant coloration.
On rare occasion anypony can be transformed into a crystal pony for a short period of time after attending the "Crystal Fair" and witnessing the crystal heart's renewed energy.
The Crystal ponies have been missing for a thousand years. Their kingdom fell to the King Sombra's curse. Prior to vanishing they had suffered enslavement, and many of the ponies had locked away all of their memories for the sake of protecting their minds. The psychological trauma from these events are obvious, but the crystal ponies are also as resilient as their stone counterparts, managing to push past that pain and return to their former glory as a kingdom.
That said the determination and ability to survive hardship is considered of the Crystal pony's strengths. Their harsh northern landscape and turmoiled past show great resilience and determination.

Faeponies Flutters and Changelings
Flutter ponies are an offset of pegasi that have very thin, fragile wings similar to many insect species. Like the pegasi they have the ability to fly and stand on cloud surfaces, but more often these ponies can be found deep in the thicket of the wood, and have a distinct distaste for steel.
Flutterponies are known for their beauty and grace, and a gentle manner. They're also known for their sense of unity. Their passive magic tends to soothe and comfort those around them.
They also have access to a different kind of magic than unicorns; glamour Magic. Though the nature of this magic, like unicorns, is directly related to their own special talent. Most notable for the flutter ponies is the ability to bring about illusions, much like unicorns can all levitate, all flutter ponies share this ability to some extent.
Much like the Crystal Ponies these ponies have been missing for as long as anypony can remember, and only recently have come back into the world of equestira.
The fall of the flutterponies Once upon a time, a unicorn prince fell in love with the Princess of Tir neigh nOg, homeland of the Flutterponies. In order to gain the attention of the Princess, the Prince created a "love potion" and gave it to the Princess. Unfortunately, this "love potion" turned out to be a "love poison" and the two became completely obsessed with one another, completely ignoring their respective royal duties.
Soon after this, a dragon attacked the kingdom of Tir neigh nOg and killed the Prince, causing the Princess to fall into such heartache that she and all of her Flutterpony subjects were mutated into hideous insectoid monstrosities that needed to feed on the Love of others in order to survive, now known to ponykind as changelings.
Changelings Trapped in an eternal thirst the princess sought to consume other ponies love, as did her subjects. Using their glamour powers they used of their shape shifting to take advantage of the ponies in love. As their chaos reigned throughout Equestria, the royal sisters soon banished the twisted princess and her subjects were trapped deep within the rich crystal laden mountains beneath Canterlot.
Chrysalis, the corrupted princess, sought both power an revenge. Through meticulous planning she found the perfect time to strike, rising to take the place of Princess Candace with her tricks of glamour magic and illusion, she sought to steal away Shining Armor's love to raise her own power and weaken Canterlot's. Eventually she and her minions broke past the barriers around the city, and the changelings fell upon the ponies of Canterlot.
But Chrysalis was defeated with Princess Candace and Shining Armor's love, with the aid of harmony, and she and her changelings were banished to the badlands.
Return of the flutterponies Not all of the ponies fell victim to this ravenous hunger, and they were promptly cursed by the bitter princess. The portal that connected their village was trapped in an eternal mirage, lost to time.
Upon Chrysalis' banishment the curse had weakened, allowing the portal between the worlds open for very brief amounts of time. Curious about this strange portal Twilight investigated the tale of Tir neigh nOg.
Twilight and her friends soon discover an old dragon guarding the portal, and are forced to defeat it before they can access the portal into the strange new village, reuniting the Flutterponies with the rest of Equestria.
Breezies Breezies are a small subset of faepony who stand no higher than a butterfly. Their native language is far different than that of those known to Equestria, speaking in an old tongue long ago lost with the dissapereance of Hollow Shades.
They travel from east to west then back again to gather pollen and return it to their home. Breezies function best in large groups, and any segregation from their flight could be disastrous to their safety.
These small, delicate ponies need a gentle breeze to activate their magic, which guards the pollen from harm. Yet these tiny ponies are at quite at risk within the elements of modern Equestria.
The breezie's have small, slender bodies with large, translucent wings and antennae that emit a soft glow in the dark. They often have thick curly manes and tails, but straight hair is not unheard of.

Seaponies, and Mermares (Also known as Hippocampus and Kelpies and about a dozen other names all across different folklore... ) Seaponies hold the front end of a regular pony, with the back end of a seahorse. These relatively peaceful ponies rarely stray too far from their kingdom. They depend on the oceans currants to move them around, aside from their undulating small fins, which reside on their back and elbows.
Mermares, however, have the front end of a pony and the back end of a fish or a dolphin. These ponies are much more agile and powerful within the water. Some stories of Mermares have told warnings of the creatures stealing away sailors and drowning them in the murky depths.
Tales of the ponies of the sea littered the books and folklore of Equestria, but very few had seen such wondrous creatures. Tales came from unreliable sources; sailors drunk on sea-water, woozy and disoriented, rattling on about the various things that they had seen with little proof.
The realm of the seaponies and Mermares remained hidden deep beneath the ocean for countless years, a fanciful castle and a magical kingdom housed these water-breathing ponies. Their kingdom was peaceful, until a great and powerful beast with gnashing jaws and swift fins fell upon it. The dreaded Leviathan had only been spoken about in lore, but the beast had escaped its once eternal tomb. It now tore through the city, destroying the beautiful Coral buildings the seaponies and mermares called home, seeking to devourer every last one.
The princess of the Seaponies and Mermares stood up against the beast, keeping him at bay with her magic as her subjects sought to swim away to safety.

The Vesperti (bat-ponies) ((name origin: vespertilio means bat in latin, and Vesper is the term for Venus, which is known as the Morning Star or the Evening Star due to its interesting orbital properties, causing it to appear as the brightest 'star' to be seen at sunrise or sunset. -- Relating to the typical behavior of bats to fly out at dusk and return by dawn. These ponies may also be referred to as Noctral.))
Vesperti are their own species of ponies, with no more relation to the pegasi than the unicorns or earth ponies.
These creatures of the night have slitted eyes, tufted ears, webbed wings, and pointy fangs. These ponies have not been seen in Equestria since the rise and banishment of Nightmare moon, the stories that lingered were thought to be nothing more than an old mare's tale. But the truth may still remain hidden in the Two Sisters Castle.
It seems that they have some affinity to the juice of various fruits, and may bear some long distant relation to the Vampire fruit bats, which might have been used in the spell of their origin.
Awakening of the Vesperti: Long ago, as Luna lived in the shadow of her sister, very few ponies enjoyed the night. Each little pony would lay their head down and sleep... for some time Luna was content to allow her reign to be filled with sweet dreams, guiding ponies through them as she had always done. But no one recognized her talent, they heaped praise upon her sister, sometimes even giving Celestia the thanks for their happy, sun filled dreams.
Resentment grew deep within the young princess, and as she stared upon the sky each night she marveled in the beauty that the black abyss brought. The stars littered the sky like diamonds amongst a soft silk, shimmering blue and black. Luna longed for her fellow ponies to enjoy her world, to see this beauty.
Tormented by her desperation to this dream she was consumed by it. As Nightmare moon came forth she brought about a powerful spell to raise a new breed of pony from the night. While a "blessing" was bestowed upon her guards and a hoof-full of her few loyal subjects. The spell left these new and old ponies with long, slender and webbed wings, slitted pupils and tufts at the end of their ears. Her blessing allowed them flight through that beautiful black sky, to see amongst the dark as if it were day, and to hear things nopony else could hear. Their senses were heightened to enjoy her beautiful creation.
Nightmare moon sought to bring about this blessing to all of Equestria, to shroud the world in darkness and allow everypony these generous gifts. Yet her gracious offer was not so well met, in a rage she sought fit to curse each and every pony in all Equestria. Celestia stepped in, ending the sudden and terrible reign of her sister and banishing her to the moon.
Without Luna to guide them the remaining Vesperti loyal to her sought refuge deep within the caves of foal mountain, fearing they too would be banished. There, in their small colony, they lived together, soon fostering a generation that knew nothing of the outside world. Until Luna's return, nopony had even heard of the strange bat-winged creatures save for the old mare's tales of blood sucking monster ponies that could sneak in upon the night. When Luna returned, she often wondered what had happened of her followers and her guards.

Kirin/Qilin
The Kirin are a mystic race hailing from the east (though technically west might be a faster way to reach "the east") these beautiful creatures bear the scales of dragons. Their bodies are armored save for a few 'soft spots' on their underbellies, which is typical pony skin. On their heads rest two horns, usually branched and marked as though they were made of wood. Their tails are long, and tufted, and their hooves are cloven like the heraldic unicorns.
The Kirin's culture is largely based on cooperation and peace amongst the kingdoms. Their kingdom is now collectively called the ma kingdom, but once the lands were split and stricken with chaos. It was only when the twin princesses took over rule that the lands and its inhabitants could live in peace with one another. Princess Yu brought with her justice to the warring kingdoms, reigning wise and fair rule to the lands. Princess Jin came bearing prosperity and wealth to the kingdom, assuring that the plants and farms could produce enough food to sustain all of their inhabitants.
Some diversion still exists amongst the lands, which is often represented in the way they address themselves, though they are all the same species. The qilin, kirin, or Gilin. Officially the kingdom is using Kirin, in light of the manner that their allies from Equestria speak the name.
Kirins have control a a softer magic refereed to as chi. The energy of life that the Kirin emits is malleable and can be formed into special talents, as opposed to the more arcane magic of a unicorn or the fairy magic that the Faeponies possess. These abilities can enhance their natural talents.
The royal Kirin are blessed with the ability to run on clouds, creating little puffs of "nimbus" on their ankles, and are thus the equivalent of Alicorns.
