Vega is generally a pretty nice girl to be around, but she switches between a dominant personality and the sort of desperate mannerisms seen in an addict depending on whether she needs to charge herself or not (see below). She has a reputation for being promiscuous, and while she acts like this doesn't bother her, it really does because she's afraid of telling anyone about why she has so much sex for fear of being ostracized.
Vega's powers, and the rumors that spread about her, led her to believe that people around her didn't really care about her and would likely shun her even more if she tried to "out" her abilities. This changed after Lumen revealed herself, and the familiar has since become Vega's closest friend.

Vega Valentine was born to a single mother in Brooklyn, and her childhood wasn't entirely happy. Her mother seemed cold and distant, and she never knew her father, which was probably the reason for her mother's personality. Vega found caretakers in the form of her grandparents, whom she spent a lot of time with when they visited her mother's home, and whom showed her the kind of affection her mother did not want to show.
Despite her home problems, Vega grew up rather normally, getting good enough grades in school to go to college; specifically New York University. At age 22, while she was packing up to leave after spending break at home, she uncovered several strange books and took them with her to NYU, soon getting around to reading them; she discovered that they were books about magic, and, scoffing at the idea of magic being real, she decided to fool around, recreating a ritual and saying some incantations for the fun of it.
The book she was reading from at the time was, though she didn't realize it, a book about using magic to enhance sexual pleasure, and the incantation she invoked was, unbeknownst to her, quite powerful if one didn't already have enough magical ability to be able to handle it. She was infused with magic, specifically for the purposes of the book she was reading from but still able to learn other kinds of magic, but this came with the drawback of her needing to have sex regularly to keep her magic-- and later, she discovered, her own bodily health-- strong.
Vega also discovered the consequences of waiting too long to "recharge" her magic; after being stranded after a party, Vega hitchhiked back to NYU, being picked up by a trucker to do so. Her powers compelled her to seduce and sleep with the man, and like several other such times before, she absorbed energy from him in order to recharge herself. However, this time, she took "too much" and wound up killing the man in a manner similar to a succubus. Shocked and horrified, Vega immediately fled the scene and eventually made her way back to NYU, still reeling from what had happened. After a short time of thought, she decided that she couldn't risk being around her friends if it put their very lives at risk, and she abruptly left the university.
After a while of wandering and hitchhiking, quickly picking up ways to sustain herself (such as through credit card fraud), and keeping her powers charged while doing her best not to kill her lovers, Vega eventually made it to Mystic Falls in Virginia, where she has stayed since, keeping in contact with her family and friends and doing her best to live a mostly-normal life. She has managed to pick up a job at Mystic Falls Public Library. Despite becoming more comfortable with her lot in life, she is still haunted by the memory of the man she unwittingly killed and the fear that she might do so again.
While working as a librarian, Vega recently came into the ownership of a Familiar named Lumen, whom appeared as a stray Siamese cat whom Vega cared for. Upon recognizing that Vega was a witch, Lumen bonded to her and entered service to Vega, and two have lived together since.
