Tanis had come across that mare a few times again in her life, usually right after her worst days, the times when catastrophes had happened. Once she had been shoved into a raging deep river and had nearly drowned, that Mare had been watching from the far banks. Nearly every time she had almost died, she saw that horrible mare. She had taken to seeing her as some sort of grim omen, or dark portent. Not that she herself was a bundle of sunshine and flowers, of course.
Today, for example, since she had been bored, she decided to eat. Oh, she knew she could brain some animal with her hoof and eat it while it was stunned, but she was bored, so she had chased down her chosen meal, terrified it, pinned the small tail under a bolder and then she...dropped. That's what you do to kill your food yes? Stop. Drop. Roll over it until you have impaled it a hundred times over. She scraped the small animal, some sort of vole, off her back against the rock that had pinned it and was sitting in the grass, one off on the beast's skull while her teeth casually pulled off strips of meat. Would have been a better meal had she actually been hungry....
