I've noticed that the higher end fish cost quite a pretty coin, do they pay for themselves in their lifespan? I've considered getting higher end fish, but wasn't wanting to throw my money into a wishing well.

No. There is no way to recoup the amount of money a high end fish costs at this time. But that being said, we all like to play high end tanks. We can't play high end tanks if no one has high end tanks.
