How had it come to this?
Several months ago, on a leisurely fly by the river, Fahargiga had chanced to look down and spy a glint of gold in the water. Hoping against hope for coinage or some similar wealth, she had swooped down to snatch the shape in the water. To her disappointment, the glint had been on a nova swimming in the water. Before she could eviscerate him, however, he had offered a trade. It had seemed harmless at the time, and the black dragon had accepted. That had been several months ago. And now, as a result, Fahargiga was not alone in her swamp.
She just...ugh. They were...well, okay, fine, they were cute. If cute was the kind of thing you liked. She'd even gone all sentimental and given them pretty names. The Beautiful, Black Secret--well, she was a very pretty wyrmling, and the swamp could hold many secrets. In fact, a foal's life was itself a secret--someday it would be an adult and lead a full life (if it was very, very lucky), and the details of that full life were a mystery until they occurred. As for the younger? The little brown dragon she had named in a language she herself had been named in. The word was an idiom, and she felt it accurately reflected the filly's attitude.
But the warm glow of childbirth had worn off after a few days, and Fahargiga was a solitary creature by nature. In short, she was giving serious thought to pushing the brats out. The younger one in particular--if her coloration was anything to go by, she was a desert dragon. Which would probably explain why she'd managed to crawl up into one of the numerous mangroves in her mother's swamp. Ngalnamam did not like heights. But she found that staying in water all day made her feel sluggish and wrinkly. She preferred to haul herself up out of the water whenever possible, but there was very little dry land hereabouts to haul herself onto. So Ngal had resorted to clambering her way up a tree. That would have been an impressive feat in a nova if not for her talons. She wondered where those came from--Mummy didn't have them, but she and Vutha did. They also had big wings, which Ngal was not looking forward to using. Nope, nope, nope.
If she didn't think about the height, though, being in the tree wasn't all that bad. In fact, it had a distinct advantage--she could see things from up here. Not very far, considering the tangled mess that was the swamp, but she could see far enough across the wetlands to see other creatures in the swamp. There weren't many--Mummy didn't like intruders--but she could see the occasional alligator or turtle sunning itself. She could also see her sister. With a giggle, she broke off a tree branch and dropped it beside Vutha.
Unfortunately, that did mean looking down. She gulped and wrapped her tail around the tree.

Vutha had been watching Ngal climb the mangrove which made her laugh a bit, her sister didn't like heights at all. Vutha was unsure about how she felt, she liked the water she liked popping out of the water and scaring birds and things! Roaring at the Crocodiles was another pastime watching them run away then calling them back because they were her friends.
The little wyrmling had an affinity for the reptiles that lived in her mother's swamp, they would come when they were called and Vutha wasn't sure why. she didn't know that much about her heritage. Vutha grinned up at her sister, the brown wyrmling didn't look down only fell and Vutha nuzzled her when she landed beside her giving her a toothy grin.
using her claw to anchor her, she wasn't sure where they came from either but she thought perhaps they were from her mother's lineage somewhere.
"Ngal!" Vutha laughed playing with a gecko she's found. "Look!"

That was the problem with sitting in a tree really high up when you're a big, water-logged star, no matter what your age. Ngal's tail had wrapped itself so firmly around the tree that, well...it was embarrassing, but the tree branched snapped and she found herself tumbling into the overgrown water of the swamp. Squelch went the stagnant water, and squeak! went the panicky wyrmling. The fall seemed to last forever, but as she scrabbled to lift her head out of the water and glanced back up at the severed end of the branch she had been sitting on (rotted all the way through, because of course it was) she finally saw how far up she had been.
Not much more than a wing's length. Well, so much for danger.
With her dignity hurt more than anything else, Ngal swam towards her sister, nosing the branch out of the way. Vutha's nuzzle comforted her and eased the pain away. What would she do without Vutha? Certainly not get to see pretty geckos, for one thing! She smiled at the little lizard perched on Vutha's wing tip. "He's so pretty! Where did you find him?"The snap of a branch and the yelp of a wyrmling did not go entirely unnoticed by the terror of the swamp. This. This was the part of motherhood that Fahargiga hated above all others--the actual caring about her offspring. Offspring weren't particularly interesting to her, and yet here she was, abandoning a previously successful hunt of a particularly fetching alligator to plunge in the direction of the crash. When she arrived on the scene, both her daughters were sitting calmly in the water. The mangrove above them--not very far above them, admittedly--was now missing a branch. Fahargiga sighed. Worrying. It was entirely unlike her! "Is anyone hurt?"she growled. Neither child appeared to have a snapped neck or broken wings. Good. Little troublemakers. If either of them had hurt legs, they'd be easy prey for crocodiles, though. Damnit. Why did she even care?!

Beside her sister she was happy and with her mother nearby, "Ngal are you ok?" she asked then looked up at her mother who was now hovering above them. Mother made them feel safe, with their terrifying neighbor. "We're ok Momma, Sorry." she said nuzzling Giga's legs in apology. she loved her momma so much. But she still kinda wanted to meet her dad too even though she was super happy with her mom.
She turned her head back to her sister and grinned "I don't know he sort of just showed up," she answered placing the little gecko in her sister's webbed foreclaws, She stayed close beside her sister then she turned to her mother "Momma Look!" she said happily her wings flapping she raised herself a little higher out of the water.
Vutha unlike her sibling wasn't afraid of heights to the same extent. She thought she actually might like flying but her wings weren't strong enough. Soon enough she plopped back into the swampy waters with a giggle her hair flopping on her draconic face.

"I'm okay!" Ngal mumbled. She nuzzled her sister back to reassure her, then went back to oggling the pretty lizard. "You always find the best things." She leaned against her mother's legs and watched her sister lift herself from the water. Coolio! Ngal hadn't yet tried to use her wings much except when swimming or sunning herself on a log. They were too little for her to want to try anything out yet.And now the little brat was nuzzling her legs...why did foals have to make themselves so hard to hate?! She couldn't hate these little idiots! Not with those big eyes and cute, craggy faces. And the egg teeth! Those stupid things hadn't fallen off yet! It made them look so much younger and cuter, like when they'd been born and they'd lain there all wet and smelly and helpless. When Fahargiga had been their age, she'd stood up! Not long after birth, either! Novae were different, though. These two could swim in the amount of time it took her to learn how to walk. As for flying? Uuuuuuggggh. She was not looking forward to teaching them that.
Not that it was up to her anyway. With her new pet safely transferred to her sisters oversized paws (something they'd inherited from their grandmother), the eldest was able to lift herself up from the stagnant water a little bit. "Be careful, both of you. Remember, crocodiles will attack you if you get hurt." She nuzzled first Ngal, then Vutha. Damn, those kids were cute. "You'll be a strong flier some day, Vuthavoreirthos. Keep practicing, get those wings strong." She lowered her head into the water and cast around. Good. No crocodiles or snakes in here. This pond, at least, would be safe for them to practice their wings in. "You too, Ngal. Strong wings will keep you safe from that gold beast."
That wasn't manipulation--at least, not intentional or malevolent manipulation. Fahargiga wasn't warning her daughters because she hated that golden git, but for a far simpler reason, one that she struggled to explain. For the first time in her life, she was afraid of Gildenfire. She was afraid that he'd find out about her precious babies and eradicate them. She, well, she could defend herself. But Vutha and Ngal? Not so much. She was afraid to leave the swamp now, afraid to leave them alone, and not just because of the crocs. It was that damn golden dragon. He could ruin everything here.Ngal suppressed a shudder. The gold dragon. Their mother told them the horror stories about that mean bully in the forest beyond. She lifted her wings and tried to pull herself from the water. She didn't get far--the water sucked on her, making it all the harder to get clear of it. Vutha must be really strong to do this!
