They'd walked in silence once out of the room, a silence that still carried tension, but not the brittle, wire-tight tension that had stretched painfully to its snapping point and finally broken. This was closer to the elastic tautness that stretched, pulled, kept Jordan aware of Rep and brought him back every time, without the sharp tearing breaking pain.

When they reached the training grounds, Jordan moved into an open space, stretched slowly and thoroughly, and only then turned to face Rep, Ferros materializing in his hand like an extension of his body as they thought of summoning. He smiled, and it was a bright and genuine smile, full of uncomplicated anticipation.

Rep too felt better - at least regarding Jordan. There was still a very heavy weight of unresolved issues, but almost none of them tied back to the other hunter any longer. Most of them concerned death. Death and his refusal to ever deal with it or accept it, since his mother had died, he'd taken every loss and locked it away tightly somewhere in the recesses of his mind. He refused to accept it, things he wanted were never irretrievably gone, he couldn't handle it.

But one day he would have to, he could feel the ghosts of loss sometimes, whenever he saw something that reminded him of a person he'd relegated to that place in his mind where they never lived but never died.

People's perceptions of him too weighed heavy. Monster, better off dead than alive, useless, unrepentant, all of those things, he could only hear them so many times before they began to soak in, before his weak and fragile sense of self began to contort to fit their words.

He summoned Tracey without a word in response to Ferros, the tangled length of Marie twisted tight around the axe. Fighting was familar and good, a reminder to him that despite everything else there was a place he could go where he felt alive and like he was of some use to the world, where pain and proximity, intimacy, love and hate merged into one single line of feeling.

He left himself wide open. And this time he wouldn't flinch from Jordan's touch.

This, at least, was uncomplicated and always had been. Much as Jordan sometimes felt frustration with the straightforward combat focus of Sun Division, there were other times when the simple joy of fighting, of solving the problem of the Gordian knot with strength rather than finesse, made him feel that he was in the right place and always had been. He prowled forward cautiously, watching Rep's stance for any sign that the other man was about to attack.

His swing was light and almost playful, and Ferros's low rumble as he tasted Fear was a sound of lazy interest rather than intent hunger.

Rep on the other hand was more narrowed and focused, nothing about the spar was lazy or casual yet. It was a necessary thing he needed and wanted, pain to bring him back to life, to wake him up from this ******** distant emotional break.

He smirked at the glancing blow from Ferros and tensing all his muscles, snapped into action, silent for the moment but focusing intensely.

The sweeping, cold bite of Tracey's blade knocked Jordan back a step, but he recovered quickly. His next swing was more focused in return; this was every bit as much a conversation as any they'd conducted in words. A question: What do you need? And the reply: Don't go easy on me.

They wouldn't. Ferros hit harder this time, his runes flickering, though not yet alight.

The harder hit was better, he felt it through the shield, the weight and heat of Ferros' steel intense at any distance, Tracey was also enjoying the fight, at the very forefront of Rep's mind, rapt attention fixed on Jordan.

"Charge. I can't charge." it didn't matter if he was on the receiving or the damage dealing end of a charge, he wanted to feel it, to experience that surge of fear and power, he missed it a lot.

He didn't swing, merely steadied himself for the next blow.

Jordan's eyes went to the slithering coil of Marie where she wrapped around Tracey, and Ferros rumbled a low note of displeasure in his mind. It might be necessary, but they didn't like it. Nobody should hold Traciel captive like that.

They hesitated only a moment, taking in Rep's stance. He was braced for it, inviting it, and they'd promised. Jordan swung harder, and Ferros hissed with the contact, drawing chill dark Fear into himself. His runes lit up in a steady glow.

Jordan's charge was full, he knew it, tuned into the vividness of the glow of runes of those he fought alongside all the time. It was what he'd been waiting for and what he wanted. Tracey was deeply frustrated that he couldn't get even a taste of Ferros' fear, denied even that much by Marie's strict hold on his fear charges.

But it wasn't going to be free, he twisted Tracey's blade and swung, determined to hold off any charge as long as he possibly could.

Jordan twisted to take the worst of the hit against his arm and side, Ferros snapping out to catch the black blade against his handle as the edge swung down and across, and they braced and shoved to deflect Tracey's arc off to the side. He stepped into the momentum and planted one foot, turning the push and twist into a rapid spin that brought Ferros around in a full lateral circle.

Now?

Now.

Ferros burst into searing, bright flame with the soft, familiar whump of displaced air, and they hit hard and precise, trusting Rep to be capable of withstanding it, Tracey to protect him.

Rep hadn't been sure if Jordan would use the charge or if he'd do what most people seemed to do, hold back fearfully and insult him by doing so. He wanted to hurt, he wanted to ******** bask in everything that Ferros was capable of and was not even slightly ******** afraid.

So when the blow landed, followed up immediately by the flames he could feel on his eyes even as he looked at them. Tracey embraced it and he exulted in it.

He felt his shield eat most of the damage, capable of at least this much, and he smirked a little broader. It still wasn't enough, not yet. "Gotta hit harder than that."

He threw Tracey's weight against Ferros with everything he had, letting the hammer block most of it.

The sharp blade skittered along the surface of Ferros's barrel, and they felt a little of their shield scraping off; not a lot, certainly much less than they'd damaged Tracey's shield, but that was no reason to underestimate Rep or to decide he wasn't dangerous. That was how it was. Rep wouldn't give in easily, even when the odds were stacked severely against him. Jordan grinned back. "Okay."

He backed off a step to catch his balance, then lunged in again, bringing Ferros around in an underhand swing, the side of hammer's head dipping to skim the grass at the lowest point of his arc and coming back up with crushing force.

Ferros always hit like a truck. He was a difficult weapon to fight with Tracey, rock blunted scissors and giant hammer more or less blunted axe. A cutting blade did very little against a sturdy handle and solid head, every swing ending up a heavy twisted wrestle of steel on steel. He knew he had no real chance of winning but that didn't matter.

The swing this time was enough to knock him clear off his feet, sending him to the ground with a thump before he could gather himself and once more use the polearm like a walking stick to haul himself to his feet, steady and bring him down in a huge overhand cleave.

Tracey came down hard, knocking Jordan likewise off his feet; he slammed Ferros down against the ground, keeping himself from tumbling too far and using the hammer's handle to shove himself back to his feet in a low crouch. "s**t," he panted, grinning crazily with the surge of adrenaline. "You hit hard."

He gripped the long handle with both hands, making sure his hold was solid, and then lunged back up to his feet, bringing Ferros up and over to return the hit with interest, the weight of the hammer's barrel slowing the arc but making him almost unstoppable once in motion.

Once again he went down hard, the air knocked out of his lungs and once again he pulled himself to his feet as rapidly as he could manage using Tracey to heft himself up on. His shield was low, but he gave absolutely no sign of this fact, narrowing his eyes and once again dropping into a battle stance. "So do ******** you, and you know it." he said coolly.

He edged sideways, patiently trying to fake out what way he was going to swing and leave Jordan guessing.

"Swinging against Ferros always ******** hurts my shoulders. It's like trying to move a ******** mountain."

It didn't stop him swinging again.

Jordan smirked in response. He did know it, and it always quietly pleased them when someone acknowledged it; Rep saying so was another level of quiet pride. "Tracey's not insignificant himself," he replied. "Hell of a lot of heft there."

The sweep of Tracey's blade didn't catch him entirely off guard, but he wasn't quite fast enough to block it, and he stumbled back with a harsh breath. Rep had to be getting close to done, but he'd done a considerable amount of damage in return. The lack of a charge was the only thing making this fight uneven.

Jordan regained his footing and charged, bringing Ferros around in a horizontal arc. It was nearly impossible to feint with the hammer, the weight and momentum of the huge weapon making him difficult to redirect once in motion, but it was also difficult as hell to block him when he got going.
