Despite having a very gruff, strong exterior, Jen is, at heart, a woman who genuinely wants to protect others and has a strong, though quiet, faith in God. While she doesn't necessarily like the way hunters have to live their lives, she acknowledges that she cannot simply stop in her duties, both because of her commitment to the Browning legacy, and because at this point, she can't really do anything else. Due to the stance of Mormons on family being very important to one's life, even while Jen is estranged from her brother Dylan, she keeps an eye on him from a distance and regularly prays for his safety before she goes to sleep.
Jen has a pent-up feeling of survivor's guilt regarding the deaths of her parents, feeling herself responsible for not being able to save them and heartbroken over her estrangement with Dylan; she masks these feelings through her aforementioned rough demeanor and is not one for opening up about them.
Jen has little patience for foolishness, which is part of why Pascal so easily aggravates her, but she still clearly cares for him enough to keep him around and teach him the ways of hunting the supernatural. Over the past five months, she has slowly developed a rapport with the shapeshifter that has led to an unrealized romantic attraction, manifested through her short attitude and her annoyance when he transforms into women.

Jennifer Browning was born in Ogden, Utah, into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (more commonly known as Mormons), but moved with her mother and father to North Carolina as an infant when her parents left the Church, due to the Church's discovery of their lifestyle as hunters, which was connected to the violent Danite sect of Mormons which was thought to have been extinct since the 1800s. As such, Jen grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina for her formative years. From an early age, Jen was made aware of her family's legacy as hunters that went back to at least famed gun maker John Browning, though this would later cause friction within the family as Jennifer's younger brother Dylan disagreed with his parents' lifestyle. Nonetheless, Jennifer lived relatively normally even for an up-and-coming hunter, including being able to graduate high school, until she was in her early twenties and out on her own.
Having lived in Raleigh for several years, working on her own as a hunter, Jen traveled back to Wilmington to visit her parents. The visit went smoothly before the home was set upon by a demon named Lenarael, whom had been an adversary of Jen's family in the past; from what Jen currently understands, Lenarael attacked the family to get an ancestral weapon belonging to the Browning family: Moriah, a custom-built M1911 made by John Browning himself and blessed with holy power so that it could kill demons. This sudden attack meant that none of the three hunters were properly prepared, and Lenarael managed to kill both Fred and Hannah, before Jen managed to exorcise him from his current host and send him to Hell, then took Moriah for herself. This occurrence led to Dylan estranging himself from Jen once he learned about it, and she hasn't contacted him since.
By age twenty-six, Jen, now hardened and more aloof due to her experiences, encountered a shapeshifter named Pascal while traveling through North Carolina. Pascal at the time was attempting to rob a convenience store, and she confronted him, quickly putting him into a position where he was at her mercy. Pascal pleaded with Jen to spare his life, insisting that he was not evil like many others like him and hadn't even ever killed anyone. He then offered to help her in her travels if she spared him, and Jen relented, allowing Pascal to accompany her.
Now the two have moved through to Virginia and to Mystic Falls, following rumors of more supernatural beings in the town, and unknowingly are there with the Winchesters, fellow hunters who arrived at around the same time.
