Snow blanketed the ground. While many soquili enjoyed that sort of weather, Daenerys found it unpleasant and barely tolerable. She was the blood of the dragon and dragons liked heat. Her own dragons were perfect examples of this, huddled in a mass on her back under her wings. They screeched horribly whenever she shook them out and she was starting to think that she would just have to put up with them clinging to her until the weather passed. The smaller two were fine, but the black Drogon was big enough that he had to wind his tail all around her belly to stay on. It was a little ridiculous looking and very cumbersome.

The rest of the herd was presently foraging in an area that had been a little more protected from the snow. Daenerys had stayed with them for a while but had eventually decided to take a walk to warm herself. She asked Umeko to come with and keep her company and now together they walked, making twin paths through the snow. Though trees covered much of the area, Dany noticed a wide clearing not too far away.

Umeko had remained silent after Daenerys had asked for her company on a walk. Her khaleesi had been gracious enough to extend the invitation to her and Umeko had accepted at once. The chance to explore a little bit while at the same time spending time with her leader was a chance that Umeko believed couldn't be passed up. So it was that Umeko found herself carving a twin path through the snow at Daenerys' side. Her eyes kept drifting to the dragons that refused to do anything but cling or hang onto the mare. Umeko watched them in silence before noticing that the trees were thinning out in front of them.

The scenery was breathtaking and soon Umeko felt like a filly again as she stared at the clearing. Her eyes shone as she glanced towards Daenerys before darting away from the other mare and straight into the clearing. Her hooves slipped a little before she corrected her stance. That was strange. Umeko shrugged it off before calling to Daenerys, "come out and join me although be careful. It is a bit slippery."

Umeko took a few cautious steps further out and brought her muzzle to the snow. Untouched snow was always the best. A thin cracking sound reached Umeko's ears and she stared puzzled at the ground. The sound had originated from beneath her. That was all the warning she got as the ground gave way plunging Umeko into ice cold water.

Freezing cold water surrounded her. Umeko couldn't tell what direction was up and what was down as she flailed her hooves in a desperate attempt to reach the surface again. Had her icy plunge been witnessed? Had Daenerys seen what happened? Fear began to set in as Umeko found herself in a cold, dark prison with no discernible way out.

Astúcia never knew how to feel about the cold weather. It didn't make him feel any particular discomfort, it was simply annoying. Though he enjoyed seeing everything covered in a nice blanket of white snow.

Having gone past this area earlier in the season, before the frost, he knew of a smaller body of water up ahead. It wasn't too terribly wide or deep, but enough to swim. He rather wondered if it had frozen over yet. Thinking it over a bit, he decided that it wasn't cold enough for the water to be safe. He would have to walk around it. Swimming like he had earlier would be much too cold.

Astúcia saw the lake clearing up ahead. Listening a bit as he paused in the snow, he heard a crash and a short scream. He rushed over to the frozen lake to see what had happened. As he approached he saw a mare on the side of the lake and a hole out in the lake. Astúcia jumped into action to save whomever may be under the ice.

Daenerys immediately knew that something was strange when she put her hooves onto the ice. That didn't feel like frozen grass. Unfortunately, she didn't have time to puzzle this out before Umeko plunged through. "Umeko!" she cried out, shocked and horrified by the sudden turn of events.

She flung her wings open, dislodging her dragons and sending them shrieking into the air. There was splashing in the water where Umeko fell in, but Daenerys couldn't tell if her head was above water or not. Even if it was, the cold would kill her just as surely as drowning would. Daenerys rushed forward a few steps but stopped short, hearing the ominous sound of ice cracking beneath her. What could she do? She wasn't a large mare nor a particularly strong one. Even if she was able to reach Umeko she probably didn't have the strength to pull her out.

Suddenly they weren't alone. There was a big stallion charging over, but the sight of him made Daenerys feel even colder. A kalona! Her family had kalona blood and while she did not believe that all kalona were dangerous, she knew that many were. Had this one come to help them, or prey on them in their time of crisis?

Was this what dying felt like? No, it couldn't be that. Umeko struggled to make sense of the gloom around her as she fought to find the place that she had plunged through. If she could just get to the large hole that had been created when she fell through the ice she would be okay, right?

Time was working against the mare though. Every second longer that she struggled in the frigid water was another precious second that the water continued to sap her strength. Soon there would be no energy left to continue to fight and Umeko grew just that much more panicked with that realization: she had to get out!

Her wings, saturated as they were with the water, proved to be a hindrance as she pushed herself to find and break the surface. She needed to get out of here. She couldn't die yet ... she just couldn't.

Astúcia knew there wasn't much time and he decided that there was only one way he may be able to save the one in the water, though it would put them both at risk. Coming to the ice he made it as far out as quickly as he could before pounding on the ice and breaking it beneath his hooves. He wanted to be sure that there was a large enough hole in the ice that they could both make it out.

Plunging himself into the freezing water, the shock of the cold filling up his mind, he calmed himself and looked around ahead of him. In front of him there was something thrashing about in the water. He decided that it must of been who went through. Using his powerful legs, even utilizing his webbed wings, he made his way over as quickly as the cold lake would allow him. Getting under the other Soquili, he positioned himself to rise so they were squarely on his back. He didn't want to risk them falling further into the water and was sure he still had enough strength to lift them to the top of the ice.

Pumping his legs and wings, they made it to the surface of the water. He took a pained breath of air and started the struggle to shore, breaking the ice in front of him as he went along.

The gods were good. The kalona stallion was pulling Umeko from the water, not chewing her to bits. Quickly, she flapped back to solid ground. The ice was destabilized now and could break anywhere, too risky to walk over even briefly. "This way!" She waved her wings urgently at the kalona stranger.

She wasn't able to help pull Umeko in, but there was something else she could do. There were still a few places where branches gave enough shelter to keep most of the snow off the ground. Dany searched in these places, dashing about gathering as many bits of wood and fallen branches as she could. She put these in a pile, sweeping the snow away with her long tufted tail.

"Bring her here!" she shouted again, before looking around for her dragons. "Drogon, Viserion, Rhaegal!" Umeko would need warmth when she made it out, and a lot of it.

Umeko had pushed herself to her limit. All the thrashing around in the water that she had done to try and find the surface again had tired her out more quickly. In the struggle she had also inhaled a large amount of water. Barely conscious she kicked her legs in a futile effort to launch herself towards the surface for the last time. That attempt was the last conscious movement from the mare. Unconsciousness rolled over Umeko in one swift move. The crashing of the ice from above fell on deaf ears. As did the sensation of being lifted towards the surface. Had she been still been conscious Umeko would have thought that she was dreaming.

It was the sudden shock of cold air on her system that roused her into a semi-aware state and Umeko found herself moving towards the shore but not of her own free will. Too weary to think Umeko let her head fall against the neck of the one who had rescued her.

Astúcia made his way to shore, heading directly to where the mare was making a fire. His hooves hit the bank of the lake. Standing up better, he made his way through the ice and water, taking large steps. Making his way quickly to the mare, he laid down, preparing to place the load down from his back.

Carefully, he tilted to the side as close as he could to the spot the mare was near. Rolling back over and getting up, he took a first look at the Soquili he had just saved. It was a second mare, who seemed younger than the mare standing near him.

"Dracarys!" The dragons obeyed well, all breathing fire upon the command word. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get the roaring flames she wanted. Even the driest wood she had found held dampness to it and smoldered more than burned. Frustrated, she fanned the sparks with her wings, willing them to burst forth with heat and light. She was rewarded with a few small flames but nothing more just yet.

With the kalona bringing Umeko on over, she didn't have time to tinker with the fire anymore. For one horrible moment Daenerys wasn't even sure that Umeko was alive. Even the short time spent in the water had left the mare limp and bedraggled. "Umeko!" Thanking the stallion would come later. For now, Dany rushed to Umeko's side and tried to see if she had any awareness left to her. "Umeko, are you hurt? Can you breathe?"

At first it seemed as if there was no awareness in Umeko at all as she continued to lay motionless on the ground. The struggle in the frozen waters of the lake had been enough to sap the mare of any energy she would have had to move about. At first Daenerys's words fell upon deaf ears. As the moments ticked by though a brief shiver ran the course of Umeko's body before she began to cough, violently. The water that she had swallowed in her struggle to find her own way out of the lake had decided to come back up. As Umeko continued to expel what she had taken in the words that Daenerys spoke repeated themselves.

The mare's eyes flickered briefly in response before closing again as a greater shiver wracked her body once more. In the water it had been cold, but now that she was out of the water the cool air was freezing the moisture that still clung to her body. The mare had briefly seen what seemed like light from a fire and yearned to feel the warmth from the flames.

Astúcia walked a little distance away, then shook himself violently. He wanted to get as much of the water off of himself as he possibly could, and didn't want to put out the small fire doing it. When he decided that was good enough, he watched the mares over by the small fire, just observing a bit. He was sure the small one he had helped was alive, he had felt her faint beat against his back. He knew she had to get warm.

Astúcia took a glance around him, figuring that a bit more wood might help get the fire going better. Seeing some smaller trees under a canopy, he went over to test how dry the wood was. He lightly brushed himself against them, finding that they were dry enough to help with the fire. Gathering some up, he headed back over to the mares, placing the sticks carefully down, hoping it would help.

She was definitely alive, but also definitely not feeling well. Fretfully, Daenerys wondered what she should do. She was a stranger to this cold and had never had to learn techniques to combat it. They had a weak fire, what else could help? She tried putting a wing over Umeko before realizing how woefully inadequate that was. The thin wing membrane did nothing to keep back the cold.

"Thank you very much," said Dany when the kalona brought more wood over. "I don't know how to make the fire any bigger than that..." Making fires was another skill that she had very little experience with. Woefully, she wished that she had spent her time as a foal learning rather than being herded around by her brother Viserys.

Awareness was coming back slowly to Umeko in waves. Her shivering had not gotten any worse but neither had it gotten any better. The mare's eyes though finally opened longer than a few seconds. Umeko's teal orbs locked on the underside of Daenerys's wing that hovered over her side. The sight of her leader talking with the stallion that had risked his life to save her filled Umeko with a sense of relief. For a brief moment her eyes closed again before she attempted to move closer to the fire.

It was on weak legs that she tried to shift to a better position in order to move nearer to the promise of warmth that the flames gave off. The effort was harder than she thought it would be as her muscles refused to cooperate. Her voice, coarse sounding, sounded out with her frustration over the failed attempt, "I'm so c-cold."

Astúcia nodded and bowed a bit in the larger mares direction, being sure to acknowledge her thanks.

"I am ever here to help."

He looked over at the smaller mare, deciding that there wasn't much else they could possibly do to keep her warm. The fire had started to get a bit bigger with the extra wood, but it hadn't truly started getting going. Poking at it a bit with his tail, he hoped stirring the wood a bit would help the flames.

Looking over at the smaller mare, he heard her speak, immediately going over to her side and helped get her closer to the fire. He then laid down in a good spot, being sure to have enough room between himself and the fire. Looking at the smaller mare, he motioned for her to lay next to him closer to the fire.

"The only way left to truly help get rid if the cold will be to share warmth."

He looked over at the larger mare. Then wondered to himself if they were out here on their own. Not to think that mares couldn't do such a thing, but it seemed a bit strange that they would venture so far on their own.
