It’s been a long week of travel. The temperature has dropped twenty degrees in the last three hours, the sun has set, and they were two and a half days behind schedule. Gaddok was to his breaking point. The men traveling with them had distanced themselves from the main caravan, and for good reason. Remus has been unbearable since they ran into “Difficulties” going through the mountain ring. Traveling to Dulban was always a pain, but they made pretty good profits in Zena.

“Cover those cages, Gaddok. It’s going to get really cold, and we will be pressing on through the night to make it to Dulban.” Remus waited until his son began strapping the blankets around the cages, then went to inform the other caravans.

Gaddok mocked his father under his breath as he began tying down the cages. He hated traveling with his father, especially under these conditions. It was difficult for him to do trade in Zena. He’s come to grips with the fact that some of these sail scales will be dispatched and eaten, but it’s the one that becomes pets he worried about. Though the landscape of Zena is beautiful the nights can be unforgivingly cold, and these cold blooded creatures have a hard time adapting to the climate change.

Remus returned to the caravan and growled, “Well, We’re on our own. They said they would meet us tomorrow evening.” It was apparent he disapproves of their choice, but the cold wouldn’t keep him from the riches of being the first to arrive in Dulban. The first to arrive means the first to open shop and collect maximum profit; those who arrive after will either have to sell at a lower profit to steal sales or make fewer sales. “Bundle up and get some shut eye. You’ll be taking over in a couple of hours.”

~Overnight travel and arriving at Dulban~

They arrived in Dulban just as the sun began to rise, “Dad. We’re here…” Gaddok muttered through chattering teeth. Pulling his fur cape tighter around his neck he stepped off the caravan and walked around back to check on the sail scales; all alive still. After getting the caravan parked and set up to open for sales, Gaddok pulled out some chopped firewood from the caravan and began building a fire.

As the hours slid by, the streets began to fill, and sales began to pick up. His father dealt with most of the sales, butchering and cleaning. Gaddok was in charge of retrieving the animals, containing them, and educating the purchaser in the proper care for these creatures should they be purchased for pets.

Midday rolled around, and Gaddok was starving. The crowds still hung in the area, but sales had diminished for the moment. “Seems like as good a time as any to get some food… You want anything?” Gaddok asked while placing a sail scale back in its cage and strapping a blanket over it.

“Yeah, whatever you find.” Remus said between customers, “Hurry back, Things will pick up again soon.”

Gaddok waved off his father and hurried away from the caravan. ‘Free at last,’ He thought to himself. The town was his for the moment, now to find a nice bite to eat.

Kiyelt was busy stuffing Iniu's face with choice cooked meat, oddly the lady was a fan of pepper, odd he thought for a sailscale. Iniu had been wild "caught" in that he had saved her from the mud puddle of hell and she had attatched herself to him ever since. He was about to stuff his face when another male came over to the food stand. He quickly ordered a meal from the vendor in addition to his own and offered the food to the new guy. "You look like you got dragged through a pit of Radaku by your ankle. Food should fix that. This is Iniu." He gestured to the sailscale, who half hissed at the new man. Odd, she had only ever gotten huffy about a begging kinfa. He assumed it had been jealousy, but why would she be jealous of a guy this time?

Gaddok laughed and accepted the food graciously, "A pit of radaku would be welcome; much better than dealing with my father." being sure to leave the an appropriate amount of space between Iniu and himself, he offered his hand, "I'm Gaddok, thanks for the meal."

Gesturing to a near by table, he took a seat to continue his conversation with the stranger, "I take no offense to your Sailscales behavior. I get hissed at a lot." he watched the animal stare him down, "Its not without reason, of course, my occupation has hardly inspired friendship among their kind."

He offered Iniu a piece of his meal as a piece offering, "How long have you had this one? Has she adapted to the cold well?" his voice held a genuine curiosity and even had a hint of concern for the sailscale. "N-Not that she looks misused by any means."

Kiyelt tilted his head, 'What is your occupation?"

He looked down at Iniu who was wrapped around his chest as per usual. "Well I have had her for about three week and she rarely unnatatches herself so I assume she uses me for warmth. I'll have to get her a sweater made for the colder times. Otherwise she seems well. And you are welcome for the meal, this vendor is one of the best."

He peered at the other man what did he do to get hissed at so much?

Gaddok nodded, acknowledging her adaptation, but then paused as he mulled over how to break his career choice to this gentle soul.

"Well..." Finding no way to put it kindly he chose a more direct route, "I'm a forth generation Sailscale merchant." Avoiding eye contact, Gaddok shifted his gaze to his food, "our family traps, cleans, and sells Sailscales in just about any way you could want them."

It was apparent that in Sauti this is something that one could brag about, but he clearly wasn't so proud of his families profession.

"Thankfully, I've only had to set traps, take money and inform customers of their habitats and living conditions in the wild to better educate them in how to care for their new pets."

"So how about you? You live around here, I assume. Do you have family that deals in the trade of Roati or Mammu fur? Your pelt looks very nice, expensive, Perhaps you're a noble?" Gaddok was trying to relieve some of the pressure off himself, "You know, I don't think I have even caught your name."

Kiyelt looked at the meat in his hand and kind of turned a green color. Selling sailscales....for food. Nothing more important then a way to fill your belly. Ew.
Seeing the boy was ashamed Kiyelt latched onto something else he had said. "Their pets? So the ones that don't conform get.. eaten?"
He shuddered, "How could you do that to such beautiful creatures? Why not let them go and stick to the pet trade?! Thats an abhorrent way to make a living."

"I could see maybe if the thing attacked you just for minding your own business but to purposely go out to catch them for food? Ugh!"

"Well at least you yourself arn't killing them." He snugged Iniu closer, if he hadn't gotten to her, if she hadn't chased a rodent into that mud, she could have been someone else's pet or worse...

He hefted a coin pouch, "How many are there now?"

He blinked at the rest of Gaddock's words. "Well yes, I did, well do..its hard to explain. My parents are part of the rebel aristocracy, Mom makes colored beads in her spare time but she is a beastmaster, she sells only as pets though, Dad is a massif that sometimes gets hired to go to small battles, as there hasn't been a big one in a while, he claims it keeps his shoulders from tightening up. They are definately not the typical ice nobles, having traveled all over and developing a love for all the races. They stick to themselves despite coming from noble families and when they do visit they zone out when there is talk of politics."

"You know, if there was no demand for what we do we would have no reason to do it." Gaddok grumbled through clenched teeth, "Its not like my father takes pleasure in dispatching and cleaning them. All we can do is make it quick and relatively painless."

Finishing his gifted meal, Gaddok leaned back on his stool, "If your father is hired for battle, why not go west? I hear there is plenty of unrest in Jauhar, but I've never been down there." He himself had always desired to aid Jauhar, but knew he was no where near prepared enough. Plus, he lacked the skills necessary to do more than be another casualty.

Seeing the lad pull out his coin purse and toss it about brought back memories of when he approached his father with the same proposal... He had been saving for months, but being a boy of six years, Gaddok had no idea that the coin he offered his father came from the very sales he was trying to prevent. His father patted his head, telling him to save his coin, and then proceeded on his way with all the sail scales loaded into his caravan.

"We had about twenty or so when I left for lunch. You won't be able to save them all, but you clearly know how to care for Sail Scales." Gaddok chuckled and pointed to the plump Iniu clinging to his shoulder, "So I will sell to you."

Getting to his feet, Gaddok tossed his trash in a near by waste bin, "I need to get back in line to purchase lunch for my father, so while we wait I can go over the retail end of sales, or I can give you the written copy at the caravan. Either way I will need to know your name." Gaddok had become more rigid, more businesslike, as the conversation had progressed. He had never met someone who would buy a stranger a meal, Introduce his sail scale, but not give his own when asked. Maybe it was just this part of Zena? He had to admit it was a nice change of pace from the usual "Peer down your nose" attitude, but he was growing wary that he should be more cautious of this locals' generosity.

"I know there is a demand of course, it just turns my stomach to think that I may have eaten one of Iniu's parents or something, as an aspiring beast charmer you understand that I get sentimental about pets." He heaved a sigh. He liked this guy, he really did and didn't want to screw it up.

"That might be a good idea, the next time Mom gets mad at him for his antics he might just go out and look for one. I'll point him toward Jahaur.

"Well I probably have enough for three, perhaps gifts for my parents and I will adopt another. Stir Iniu up with competition." He quirked a smile.

"Oh ah Kiyelt, my name is Kiyelt. Sorry." He blushed at his own absentmindedness. "Can't believe I forgot that part. My mother would swat me and despair that I had my father's manners."

Gaddok laughed and shook Kiyelt's hand, "Ha, apology accepted, and if I happen to see a female ice earthling of your likeness headed this way I'll have only good things to say." Though the thought of having him carried off by his mother while she shouts of his disregard for common courtesy had tickled his more sinister side, a bit of comedic relief from his prior tension.

After ordering a plate to go for his father, he turned back to Kiyelt, "We'd best hurry back or I might not have three sailscales to sell you." He looked at Iniu perched on his shoulder and laughed, "Now you're really going to have a reason to resent me... I'm giving you competition."

Gaddok navigated the crowd with ease and only got turned around once, but finally returned to the caravan. Remus rounded the corner of the caravan and wiped his hands on the bloodied apron that hung from his hips, "Chi's grace, boy, I thought you were lost... Where did you go? I could have made it all the way to Iory and back by the time you've returned."

Gaddok brushed off his fathers' frustration as hunger and handed him the packaged meal, "Yeah, sorry I took so long, but I had company; made a couple sales too." he thumbed a gesture behind him, "Kiyelt, this is my father, Remus. Remus, this is Kiyelt."

Knowing his father would reach to shake Kiyelt's hand, Gaddok cut between the two men, for fear his father would ask how he wanted his cut or Kiyelt would pass out on the spot. "I'll show you our sailscales," He chimed while bringing Kiyelt around to the back of the caravan.

There were seven left. Two that weren't much older than hatchlings, three that were just reaching their adult stage, and two that were well into their prime. "Well, that's an interesting assortment. I am surprised we have any of the younger ones at all... Well, you have all the age groups we catch to choose from. What were you looking for?"
PostPosted: Tue Apr 01, 2014 6:40 pm

"Nice to meet you sir." Kiyelt intoned to Gaddock's father. No sense in ticking the big man off after all it was his livelihood. He tried not to look at the cutting block and was grateful when Gaddock led him to the back.

He looked over the handsome group. "Having the young ones showed your skills, I'm sure their parents did not make it easy on you." He examined each slowly.

"The younger ones I assume are more likely to be pets yes? In that case I'll take that older mean grouchy looking one over there. Do you have one recommended as a companion for a fighter? Dad, travels and fights...alot. For my mother I'll take the little black female with the sweet face. She can train her up well."

Gaddok shrugged at the notion of being “talented” with this particular set of skills. He didn’t enjoy his job, merely did it for his family. He didn’t want to tell Kiyelt that some people preferred the tender bits of the young ones, “Yes… They’re mostly sold as pets.”

Looking at the grouch that Kiyelt picked out, he grimaced, “I’d advice clipping down his claws, or putting leather mitts on him until he’s used to you… maybe a muzzle too.” Gaddok has had more than one run in with that male, but a part of him was relieved that he was going to a good home.

As for a battle companion, naturally you would think of one of the two in their prime, “How long is your father intending on traveling? Is he looking to be in battle for more than ten years? Generally if you would imagine he would be out in the field for more than ten years, go for a youngling. If he is out for less, then I would suggest one in its prime. They are at the height of their strength and with discipline can become capable companions in battle.”

Gaddok retrieved the female for Kiyelt, “Would you like cages for their transportation… I can’t imagine you’ll be taking on three plus Iniu to your home.”

"I'll take you up on clipping his claw, just to blunt them some, cause once I start with him he will be tied to me, I'll risk leaving his mouth open just so he doesn't feel helpless. Much to my regret later but my mother wouldn't have even clipped his claws, shes a tough woman. Do you have leather ties for him? Hes going to be with me all the time and tied to me so he can only fly so far while I encourage him to change his attitude."

"Oh, Dad won't be gone that long," he laughed, "Mom would be worse when he got back then the battle field was. He usually disappears for four days to two weeks tops, and thats pushing it." He looked at the two candidates, "Which do you recommend for a massive, with a gruff but caring personality..also a dung disturber. If one is smart enough to do pranks then I will be a hero."

"Well, Mom is a Beast Master and I expect she will train both hers and Dad's, while I will be concentrating on the grouch and Iniu. But soon I will be leaving and only Mom's and Dad's will be in the house."

Gaddok smirked and shook his head, “I believe I worded that poorly… Let me rephrase. Will your father be out and about using that particular sail scale for more than ten years; not necessarily all at once, but in general.” Gaddok sighed and shifted his weight, “I’m saying that the creature, being in its prime now, will begin to wear out coming up to ten years. If your father intends on bringing him into battle up to or after ten years I might suggest going for a younger sail scale.”

After that was off his chest, Gaddok hooked a lead to the young female sail scale and hoisted her up on to his shoulder while he inched closer to the looming grouch in the corner. Thankfully they still had the blinders on him, so Gaddok just needed to get the leather wing harness on him so he could clip the creature’s claws without the threat of getting shredded by its wings.

“Planning a bit of traveling yourself, then?” Gaddok grunted between exasperated breaths as he worked the harness onto the blinded creature. Emerging from the caravan with the grouch flailing his tail, but firmly grasped in his hands, and the young female perched on Gaddok’s shoulder gently flaring her wings to keep balance as he moved about dodging tail blows. Setting the elder male on a wood post, Gaddok hooked his foot collar with a lead and tied it to the perch.

“I’ve always wanted to travel. I haven’t made it very far, unless I’m in the company of my father and his merchant group. Where you headed?” He asked trying to keep the conversation moving, while he went to work clipping the creature’s nails

"Well he is getting older so I hope he won't be on active duty for ten more years, he will probably start ranging closer to home or else Mom will box his ears. Oh yes sorry about that."

Kiyelt noted how amenable the black female was to handling. "Have you thought of being a beast tamer yourself?"

"Yes sir, lots of travel for me." He watched the comical display..soon Gaddock could watch the same thing when Kiyelt took on his new...charge.

"Jahaur actually, I have a hankering to see a Radaku. They sound amazing. I am however somewhat concerned about the horrid heat, hence my scanty apparel. Usually we are quite bundled up but alas I would melt with too many clothes on in the south."

Gaddok nodded, “Can’t say I’ve ever been that far South… I would like to go there myself someday, though.” For different reasons that seeing the animals, though for someone aspiring to be a beast tamer it would make sense to go for the radaku. “I want to learn about Alkidikes… They’re imposingly standoffish and then there’s that whole conflict with them and the shifters. I want to know why they feel so entitled to everything.” It bothered him when people just demanded things without any regard to whose life is being affected, as long as it is their way they don’t care; such an arrogant attitude to have.

Gaddok laughed at the notion of him being Beast Tamer and rubbed the back of his neck, “Heh, I don’t know about that… This one here’s pretty tame, found her when she was barely hatched. She’s quite docile and has the perfect temper for a pampered house pet.” He offered his hand out to her to step up on and then perched her on the side of the caravan, gently looping her lead through a metal bracket, “Your mom won’t have much of a challenge training this one.”

He finished rounding off the creatures’ talons. “Would you like to keep the blindfold on? I don’t know how well he will adjust to being near Iniu. We kind of kept him away from the rest for fear he might damage stock.” Without waiting for an answer Gaddok retreated to the caravan to retrieve the specimen for Kiyelt’s father.

He emerged with a male, who was near full grown, and closing in on his prime years, “This is the one I would suggest to your father. He seems mellow now, because I just woke him as I took him from his cage.” Gaddok held tight to the lead as he set the creature on the ground, “This is definitely the largest Sail scale we have in our inventory. He’s fair in a group; we haven’t had too many issues with him fighting the other sail scales, but definitely needs some training.”

Wiping the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve Gaddok took a breath and let it out slowly, “Well, What are you thinking? Going with all three today, or did you want to see any others?”
