Otto managed to escape his family after a while, slinking back to the party with little enthusiasm. He wanted to talk to someone. Someone who didn't want to coddle him, or judge him for the choices and risks he chose to take. Someone who allowed him to grow. To let him make mistakes. Someone like Clerise. Otto pulled out his phone, hiding in a place in the ballroom where most others had their backs to him. Away from the lime light and chattering. His elbows to his sides, he quickly typed out a text to the woman, not daring to put it away as he eagerly awaited a reply. Text From Otto: Are you busy? I need your company. He could be honest with her. No one else could he be who he was than when he was with Clerise.

She'd secured a dance with Man-and-Wife, one a piece, which was her crown jewel accomplishment for the night. It was all smooth sailing from here, she was pretty sure. Clerise smiled, watching the hunters in their finery and dress whites danced and wined (and occasionally dined), relaxing against a wall. But a Clerise not in perpetual motion was wrong, and the universe agreed with that fact. From inside her pocket, the redhead felt her phone buzz. Quickly retrieving it, she frowned as the words sunk in. It could have been family, it could have been Coyote, or perhaps it had been both. Either way, she wasn't one to turn down the Prodigy: not in this world or any other. Text From Clerise On my way little dude, where you hiding out? Im in the ballroom lets find one of those alcoves with the curtains and the windows and the stuff She made her way along the edges of the room, looking out for his tell-tale mop of hair.

Text From Otto Ballroom too. Wallflowering. I'll wait. After all, when one wanted to be found, it was best to stay where you were. The blond stood, anxiously waiting for the flaming head of hair to be seen through the crowd. Soon, he spotted her coming closer. He smiled widely, and waved her down. "C-Clerise! Over here!"

Clerise descended upon him in a flurry of silk, braided red hair, and cravat, and firmly pulled him into a squeezing hug.
"Hey there, Otto," she said, finally, releasing him enough so he could, you know, breathe. "Do you want to go find a quiet place?" she asked, and offered him her arm to take if he was so inclined.

Otto's smile remained, nodding his head firmly. "Yeah, that'd be really great." He shyly dipped his head at her offered arm, scratching his neck with one hand while taking her arm with the other. "Quiet and out of the way. The crowd is making me anxious."

"You said it, short stuff." Being tall and in heels had its benefits, and it was easier to peek above the crowd to see less crowded areas. She made her way towards the front foyer, sliding behind a heavy curtain that revealed a window and a window seat, pulling the red cloth behind them.
It didn't eliminate the sound, not entirely, but it dampened the crowd from something overwhelming to a dull roar. The window revealed the front gardens, still decorated with lights, in front of a backdrop of starry night sky.
"Is it just the throngs of hungry animals that got you down, or something else?" she asked, keeping her tone light. He would talk if he wanted to: Clerise had no intention of trying to yank out his metaphorical teeth. He always said what he meant, given a little bit of time.

Otto settled in behind the curtain, breathing a sigh in relief. It was enough. He was still at the party without being in it. The view was used as something to concentrate on, leaning his body against the pane.
"Uhm... something else." He murmured, grimacing as he fidgeted nervously with the hem of his sweater. Did he want to talk about it? Was he too scared? His blue gaze focused on the night sky, brows knit in worry.
"I went against my family's wishes and did something spontaneous. It didn't end well. In fact I think I should maybe invest in a paper bag to wear to school in the new year."

Sprawling out on the window seat, Clerise pat the space next to her before settling into the cushions. They looked nice, but were a little on the lumpy side. Ah, well. She'd make do.
The glasses were an option, but right now, Clerise was pretty sure right now he just wanted a friend.
"Well," she said, keeping her very distinct opinion of Otto's helicopter mom to herself, "you've got so many obligations wrapped around you it's probably pretty hard to avoid disobeying them sometimes." Clerise abided by most harmless rule-breaking, and it wasn't as though Otto was some rabid punk. He was just...a normal teenager. A nice one, too.
"I dunno, a paper bag is pretty harsh. It probably feels pretty bad though, doesn't it, whatever it is? Are you kind of fixating on everything that went wrong, and what you could have done differently?"

"No.. I just..." He rubbed his neck again, taking the seat beside Clerise. "I don't mind messing up. But because I'm always being coddled by my mom and Peyton, I feel like I never get a chance to. So like..." He flushed red, always becoming nervous or flustered when he ad to speak more than he was used to.
He heaved a breath and leaned back against the window. "Okay, so it's like this. I hung around this girl cause Peyton didn't want me to. Then she offered to make out. So I was like..." He made a wide shrug, "Sure! Why not, right? No one ever asks me that."
"But then, her boyfriend came. Or just her date. Either way, it turned out I was just filler time. Which is cool! It's fine, really.." He went red again, "But before I left, she looked really sad. And it bugged me. So Jack told me I should man up and go take her back." Otto's heart sped up as he explained, blue eyes brightly contrasted by the red in his cheeks. Clerise didn't need to know all this. He simply wanted to vent. To say it out loud to someone who wouldn't reprimand him for it. Clerise would listen. She always did.
"So then I felt like I needed to save her. If she hadn't looked so sad before, I don't think it would have been a big deal. But suddenly there I am asking her oif she's happy in front of Alistaire and just.." His eyes widened and then cringed in the span of one second. "He kissed me. It was soooo gross." His lip curled and shoulders hunched in recoil, "He did it to make fun of me, and that made Maebe angry. But then Alistaire grabbed her and said she had to stay with him, and then she was like 'Yeah I have to talk to you', and she wanted me to go away and like.."
Otto huffed in an exasperated manner, "I got all hung up over a girl I barely know and ended up so damn embarrassed over it. I mean, am I stupid or just desperate?"

Hanging out with Otto was a constant war to resist crushing him into hugs. Some were acceptable, but she was pretty sure she'd carry him everywhere if given half a choice. He was precious.
Instead, Clerise did what she did best these days: she listened.
"Taym saw you," she said, after he was done, resting a hand on his back, lightly rubbing between his shoulder blades. "Sucking face with Maebe, I mean. He said that you needed saving, as if you weren't a capable young man, ready to make your own decisions, good or bad."
Her hand drifted upwards to pat his head, smoothing his hair idly as she talked. "Running around getting make-outs isn't some huge sin, dude. She caught your interest and initiated: it's pretty attractive when people are capable of confidence, whether it's real or just for show. I don't think you were stupid or desperate, Otto. She used you, and that was lame. The fact that he came back and used you to make a petty power play-- likely to try and reassert his dominance due to his own feelings of inadequacy-- well. To dig at you like that? It smacks of immature jealousy and lashing out."
She didn't know Alistaire, not really, but she knew the type. Maebe's, too.
"Some people choose to be in relationships that are toxic, for one reason or another: misery loves company, you know. But that doesn't change the fact that...For a moment, after shared intimacy, you saw something vulnerable, in her. You're an upstanding guy, and she likely exists in a perpetual state of sad and scared behind that shell of hers. She might even hate that underbelly enough to keep it covered at all costs. To acknowledge that sort of exposed weakness is admitting it exists."
Clerise pressed a kiss to Otto's temple, as was her habit to do. "So, I guess, my point is, christ I talk a lot, is uh. Well, most of my life has been filled with mistakes and happy and not so happy accidents. They help shape us, and what you do in response to your antagonists are a big part of that. That, and I can't fault you for treating her like a human being, and expecting to be treated the same."

Taym saw him?
Noooooo... Witnesses to his terrible display! Had everyone seen him? And here he thought he'd been fairly out of the way enough not to be noticed. Alas, it was a ballroom with too many eyes to see.
Otto groaned, but felt remarkably better as Clerise rubbed his back, petted his hair, and made him feel better about the situation. Clerise knew him well. She knew he didn't need to be saved. To be coddled or kept from the world. Otto didn't mind being cared for, but he loathed being kept from. Clerise had faith in him. She didn't see him as a weak and helpless little boy. She never did.
The teen looked up at her, a smile returning to his face as his hope was renewed. He was at ease with himself and his decisions. He didn't mind being the good guy even if he got flustered, he just didn't want to be told he was naive or childish. He was done being a child.
"Thanks, Clerise." A shy grin spread over his face, eyes averting to the floor. "The only other people who think it's okay for me to do anything is my dad and uncle, but they're.. you know... stupid. And kind of crazy. I mean, they get grounded by my mom. And they're adults. I thnk Dad sleeps on the couch more often than his own bed."

Clerise grinned. Giving advice and her take on the situation never stopped being difficult, but it never stopped being one of the most fulfilling things in the world. It was better than food.
"No problem, Prodigy," she replied, leaning to the side and nudging his shoulder with her own. "We are crafted from our flaws, they define us. Also, yeah, your mother is crazy. I get to say that now, because I was a nice person, but holy s**t, dude. Helicopta momma checking in."
She hummed. "At some point, you're probably going to have to tell her that, you know that right? That you need to experience the world for what it is, rather than the censored version she tries to present to you for your own good?"

"I know. It's hard, though. She kind of scares me.... A lot." Otto added grimly. She was stern, scary. Yelled. Able to control Cody and Lex without fail.
"Yanno she wanted me to join Life instead of Mist? Cause she said she didn't want me on the field." Otto laughed dryly. "And I was so excited to join Mist so I could be just like my parents. I joined Mist anyway, but you'd think she'd be flattered, right?"

"She's really, really forceful. Beneath everything, though, she's just afraid. Afraid that you'll be taken from her, afraid that you'll grow distant, afraid that your life will be less than what it could be, because of a bad decision you make. But, just because her concerns are understandable, doesn't mean they're right."
Clerise scoffed. "You'd think. But Mist has the dirty jobs, when s**t goes bad. It can be pretty demanding, to be well balanced enough to rock the Mist Kasbah-- but that's your decision to make, not hers. I think we've come full circle again. The world is yours, my tiny friend. The trick is realising you can do whatever the <******** you want and saying to hell with the consequences. If it really matters, you'll do it, probably knocking the naysayers off their feet with your successes to boot."

Otto smiled with a shrug, leaning down to hug his knees. "In the meantime, I'll try and get really good at awkwardly fumbling through my mistakes." he said with sass, eyeing her for a moment.
"So.." He started to lean the subject away from himself, wanting to talk to Clerise and not the Guidance Councillor, "How's the party for you? See anything interesting?"
