The yellow haze from the rising sun in Sauti had yet to clear. If anything, it was thicker than usual. The fog hung in the air and around the natural peaks and created a sky full of burning goldenrod hues with the hazy purples of the mountains in the distant and not-so-distant skies peaking through as if they couldn't actually exist. It was hard to tell how close the peaks really were in the early morning sun, but it was fast clearing and would soon be gone until the next day when it would break through the horizon again.
The animals of Sauti were stretching and running and limbering up for the day ahead of them, and it seemed that they weren't the only ones. It was early, but not too early for some. Further into the fields, over and around large rock piles and the jutting cracks in the earth was something small but heavy lying in the fog, becoming clearer and more noticeable as the day wore on and the veil of the thick air lifted.

As per usual, Ogbonna was up at the crack of dawn, way ahead of everyone else around him. It had been a week or so since he had returned from Jauhar, where he had beaten the senses out of easily one hundred of those crystal bugs, and every day since had been devoted to exercise and honing his skills with his gauntlets.
He clenched his fists repeatedly, gaining a feeling for the gauntlets that had been made for him. They weren't much of anything, really, but his grandfather didn't want his prized gauntlets to be used after what happened. Sure, he was proud of his grandson for utilizing his surroundings and for having enough sense to be equipped correctly in times of danger, but cleaning bug bits off of the weapons was surprisingly difficult. He shrugged, looking away from his hand, these were just practice, he'd get his own epic gauntlets soon enough.
The first few drills, which he had devised for himself, involved running, diving, jumping, and pretty much smacking the earth as if he were being attacked. It was a pretty lame set up, but it was all he could think of. No one was awake to help him set up proper targets, or to be a proper target for that matter, so he could only make due with what he had at his arsenal. He would go through this process a few times, usually twenty reps, before taking a three minute break. He would pace in place as he took his break, to keep his heart beat up and his mind sharp and alert, something he adopted from Rastian who would often tap his foot while he was standing still for too long. Keep your wits sharp and your mind open, and you'll have a better chance at survival.
It was during one of these short breaks that he noticed something small laying in the distance. He cocked his head to the side and bent down, peering through the haze. Whatever it was, it was heavy, because of how thick it looked. He gazed left and right, as if looking for someone who might have dropped it, and scurried forward across the ground. He stayed low to the ground, but made sure to keep his ears open for anyone that might be around. Maybe he wasn't as alone as he thought he was...

The closer Ogbonna got to the object the clearer it was made out to be. Were those gauntlets?
It seemed that out of the fog there were a pair of sturdy, heavy, and decorated gauntlets lying propped against a rock. The gauntlets seemed to be custom formed, their outsides made with a special material not too common to Tendaji. They were a sight to look at and seemed to be all alone out in the open.
There weren't many clues as to what might have happened that this pair of strange gauntlets were left out here, that was for sure.

Ogbonna's eyes glimmered at the sight of the gauntlets. Wow... They were gorgeous! He scuttled closer, peered about, and slowly lifted them up for inspection. Eh, they were heavy, but not terribly. He tilted his head, giving one last glance in every direction, before deciding that it was alright to try them on. It couldn't hurt to see if they fit, could it?
"Whaaa..." He marveled, his lips curving into his typical Cheshire grin. They slipped on nicely, not a tad bit snug, it was like they were made for him! He stood, placed his hands on his hips, and posed. He looked good!
But, even if he liked them, they were left here. Who did they belong to? He scratched the side of his face, his eyes widening. Oh no! Were they injured?! He spun around, clamoring over the rocks that the gauntlets had been laying on. "I found your gauntlets! Where are you?" He called.

There were muffled voices from behind where Ogbonna was standing on top of the rock, partially hidden by the fog that still stubbornly clung to the ground. As Ogbonna yelled out, the voices seemed to stop before quickening their pace.
Two men sprung out from the fog, one holding a hammer, the other weaponless. But they had one thing in common, they both looked peeved. The larger man holding the hammer leaned against the weight of it and raised an eyebrow at the small boy. The slightly smaller man, with plenty of scruff on his face signalling that he could possibly be in his late twenties, looked up at Ogbonna before looking down at the gauntlets he was still wearing on his arms. "What do you think you're doing with those, Boy?" He bellowed out, more than a little angry. "Didn't your mother ever teach you not to touch other's things? You'll ruin them!" The man seemed a little livid at this point, nearly spitting as he spoke.
The other man with the hammer put a hand on his shoulder as a signal to back off. "He's just a kid, Iziak."

Ogbonna tilted his head at the men who seemed to hop out of nowhere, and grinned. Good, they weren't hurt! He placed his hands on his hips and hopped towards them, before bowing towards the man with the hammer.
"I'm Ogbonna, I'm glad you're alright!" He said, chuckling. "My mother is asleep right now, I can't ask her any questions until she wakes up, but she always told me that if I found something on the ground I shouldn't take it!" He slid the gauntlets off and handed them over to the weaponless man. "You should be more careful, my grandpa likes to hoard shinies. If he had seen them he might have taken them for his collection."
He paid no mind to being called "boy" or being reprimanded. He was more than used to it.

The man who seemed to own the gauntlets snatched them back from Ogbonna and seemed to be inspecting them over, still fuming to himself. The one with the hammer seemed to have reached the limit that his eyebrow could rise and had to resort to using both of his eyebrows now. He couldn't seem to believe what it was he was seeing.
The man who owned the gauntlets turned back to Ogbonna, not seeming to be settling down despite having his gauntlets back. "If your mother told you not to take it, why did you?" He bellowed. It was obvious to see that Ogbonna's cheerful mood at having been reprimanded was not making him feel any better. "I should knock you around right here and teach you a lesson." His face was turning red, and the situation was already turning worse.
The man with the hammer seemed to kick in to what his friend was saying and gave an obvious cough. "Iziak. He's less than half of your size, leave him alone. It's almost cute really, thinking he could use your gauntlets." He gave a small chuckle. This kid was definitely not ready to be fighting, that was for sure.

Ogbonna's smile faltered as the men only continued to berate him. Okay, maybe being nice wouldn't work here. He heaved a sigh, and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Don't treat me poorly because I'm younger than you, I am the future!" He barked. "Maybe when you're old and gray I'll remember how terrible you were and I won't help you when you need it. How would you like to be abandoned?"
He kicked a rock up from the ground and caught it in his hand, before flinging it towards the man with the hammer.
"And if you think I'm so small, you're missing something BIG."

The man with the hammer laughed when Ogbonna mentioned him being the future, while the other man continued to fume. Cute. Ogbonna was being cute, as far as the men were concerned.
When Ogbonna kicked the rock at the man with the hammer though, he seemed to shift his mood and become much more like his gauntlet wielding friend. "Hey kid! Do you think this is funny? Do you think I'm holding my friend back here for his or my own good?" He swung his hammer into his hands and spat at the floor. "I'm helping you out here, since you obviously aren't old enough to defend yourself." He glared at Ogbonna. Things could get ugly soon, that was for sure, now that both men were angry with Ogbonna.
The man with the gauntlets barked out a laugh. "Oh ho ho. So you're something big, huh?" The man nudged the man with the hammer. "I think this kid thinks he's ready to play with the big boys." More laughter.

The laughter caused Ogbonna's blood to boil, but only on the inside. He took another breath in, wandered to the side, and lifted a large rock above his head. The rock was easily one forth of his body in height and looked like it could easily weigh fifty pounds. He calmly wandered right up to the men, who both seemed to busy laughing to care, and slammed it down upon them, before leaping backwards.
"Guards who look over the weaker bunch leave a big hole in their defense." He quipped, smirking. "Kids aren't stupid."
He shuffled his feet back to where he had left his practice gauntlets and put them on. "If I'm so tiny and weak, then prove it to me!" He cried, waving his arms about. "Your words are nothing but words until you act upon them!"

The men stopped laughing when Ogbonna came towards them with a rock. With an easy sweep of his hammer, the larger man crushed the rock into debris before it could even reach the men. Their mood seemed to be sour once more, Ogbonna not making it any better.
"Apparently kids are stupid to think they can cause a hole in a trained fighter's defense." The man with the gauntlets spit out.
The two men seemed to be gearing up to fight Ogbonna, settling into their weapons and flaring their nostrils, when another voice came clearly from the fog behind them. "Kids are also brash. Which experienced fighters such as yourselves should understand, being them once yourselves." The voice was followed by a figure coming out from the fog: Enki.
The leaf council member patted both men on the backs, almost lighthearted, though there was a seriousness in his eyes. "Alright guys, break it up. No need for blood here. I'm sure we all know what the outcome would be." Enki eyed them both, waiting for them to take the order they were given.
The men huffed, still angry with Ogbonna, and scoffed their way out of the area. "Kid, you're lucky Enki showed up." The man with the gauntlets called back as he walked away, rumbling something to his friend inaudibly.
Enki was left standing with Ogbonna, waiting for something it seemed.

Ogbonna was all geared up for a fight. He mimicked the men to a near exact point and prepared to lunge forward, just as a strange man approached. The disappointment on his face was visible as the new man told the other two to leave, and he hung his head in defeat.
"I could've done it, why did you have to...?" He sighed, biting his lip.
He turned to the side and folded his arms, clearly saddened by the fact that he wasn't given the chance to battle the men. After a moment of silence, however, he turned his head to look at Enki. "Sorry, who are you?" He asked. "I'm Ogbonna, welcome to Mez...?"

The man in front of Ogbonna seemed to be also slightly incredulous. The same sort of look the other two men had, though it was much softer and not as pointed. "Now you're telling me that you thought you could take on two trained fighters at once?" Enki shook his head. "Kid, it's one thing to be confident, another thing entirely to be just plain foolish. It would do you good to learn the difference between the two."
Enki walked over to a nearby settlement of rocks and picked a larger one to sit down on. He seemed to be eyeing Ogbonna like he should follow before he patted a rock near him. "Name's Enki. I think we need to have a talk."

Oggie fought the urge to wrinkle his face up at the elder before him. He could've landed a good hit! He was a good fighter! He could knock them down, if he were given the chance! The words Enki were saying made his chest twist up inside, and his gait was more than reluctant when he was asked to sit down.
"Nice to meet you, Enki." He muttered. "... Are you going to tell my dad about this?"

The man laughed out into the still foggy air, seeming to shift some of the moisture in front of him. "Kid, I don't even know you're dad. I'm not gonna tell him if you won't." Enki laughed out.
He looked Ogbonna up and down, trying to decide how to go about this, before coughing to clear his throat and sighing.
"So tell me. What makes you think you're good enough to go against two of the best guys in a fight here in Sauti?" He put a hand on his knee, settling in for a long conversation. "I mean, you have to know that you're about waist height on these guys. And maybe 100 lbs soaking wet." Enki's eyes pierced into Ogbonna, waiting for a reply. Ogbonna would get seriously hurt if he picked fights with guys like that and he was far from ready to take anyone of that size down.
