Zane stretched and wandered his way along the campus trail. The sun was bright and vibrant and he couldn't help but hate it, his place was in the shadows, surrounded by decay and despair. That was the life for a son of Hades, yet here he was attending college. He was lucky to have stayed alive this long, demi-gods were often the biggest craving for hungry monsters that had missed lunch but he was a bit to much of a fighter. If he had to count the number of times he had been attacked in the past he would need a lot more than two hands and nowadays he was especially on edge. He had received a message from his father some time back, stating that he would soon face his greatest trial yet. He couldn't help but wonder day and night, what horrible monstrosity had the gods cooked up for him and why did he feel so scared. He was never really the type to be afraid of a fight but this time, somewhere deep down, he began to think it might not be a monster he was fighting... no it would be something far worse than any trial he had endured in the past.

For the millionth time, Persephone asked herself what she was doing here. Out on the sunny quad, away from home, with almost as many books in her backpack as dollars she was in debt. She'd thought grad school was going to be a fun, human experience to pass the time she spent away from the underworld, but so far it was nothing but bright light and more homework than she'd thought she'd signed up for. Scowling, she kept her head down as she hurried down the pathway. Next semester take night classes, she told herself. Oh, wait. There won't be a next semester. She spent half the year in the underworld, anyway. When she'd told Hades her plans for her time above ground this year he'd laughed in her face. "Yeah, okay. Enjoy that," he'd said. Sighing, she kicked at a crumpled up receipt someone had left lying around. He'd been right about this. It was a terrible idea.
She pulled out her phone to see if he'd texted her back. He hadn't. a*****e. She was about to slide it back into her pocket when it slipped from her hands, skidding a little and landing at the feet of some lazy-looking weirdo with blue hair. Damn it, she thought, bending down to pick it up and praying it wasn't cracked.

Zane looked down as a phone skittered across the floor and landed at his feet. He bent down to pick it up and ended up head butting the girl who he assumed the phone belonged to. He reeled back an covered the spot where he had hit with his hand. "Son of a...." He muttered silently before looking at the girl. "Hey sorry... I um, didn't mean to hit you." He said walking over to make sure she was okay. He kneeled down and picked up her phone, holding it out to her with a bored look on his face. He began to wonder if this was his challenge and the thought made him laugh. He was going to go crazy before he had to face down this oh so horrible challenge.

When she accidentally ended up butting heads with him, she made an inadvertent little noise, caught off-guard, and stumbled backward. Surprisingly, the weirdo appeared before her with her phone in his hand. She snagged it from him immediately and inspected it for cracks while she straightened out, concerned. In the bright sunlight she had to squint - it was like there was a glare on her vision. How do people live like this? she wondered. Gone were the days when she frolicked around with her hippie mom, Demeter. As the goddess of the harvest, that woman could be outside for months on end. Actually, that's exactly what she did.
Persephone was so caught up in checking her phone she almost forgot to give the guy her thanks. But when she looked up at him, his sloping, perfect features struck her. "Oh my god," she muttered, immediately noticing a resemblance with her husband. He was the spitting image of the god of the underworld. "I... Thanks. For the. The thing," she managed, gaping.

Zane looked at the girl as she stood gaping at him. "Are you alright? I didn't hurt you did I?" He asked concerned as she seemed bothered by something. He was hard headed and wouldn't have been surprised if he had accidentally hurt the poor girl. She was looking at him like he was some hideous beast.

She shook her head, trying to wipe the shocked look from her face. He looked just like Hades. All right, maybe a little different - Hades didn't have hair like that. But the resemblance was damn near uncanny.
"No, no. You just look like someone I know," she said, finding her voice again. "For a second I thought he was here!" she added, laughing nervously. It came out sounding a little delirious. It had been a longtime wish of hers for Hades to come visit her above ground. But he never did. He said the light gave him a headache.

Zane began to grow suspicious of the woman. She was odd and seemed way to odd to be normal. "And who is he, exactly?" Zane asked with a slight bit of curiosity in his voice. Had he any common sense he probably would have left sooner, but he couldn't seem to even move his feet. It was as though he was anchored into that one spot, bound to stand until his reaping came about, yet all he was doing was talking to this strange woman. No doubt she had a certain power around her but he couldn't place what it was.

Great. Now what was she supposed to say to that? She opened her mouth to say something but thought better of it, and then decided to go ahead and say it anyway. Bending the truth a little might make it a little less weird. "Just this guy. A friend," she said quickly, pretending to scroll through her texts and hoping he didn't ask anymore questions. "Just caught me off guard," she added with a shrug.

Zane was a bit confused. He wasn't going to press the matter but she obviously was lying to him. He sighed and offered his hand to her, a bit reluctant to do so out of nervousness. It wouldn't have surprised him if she suddenly busted out with wings and a six foot long tail.

Looking up from her phone, she blinked at his hand, confused for a moment. Human customs were still a little unfamiliar for her. She had a feeling he was trying to initiate something really common for people to do in this country but she'd seen every civilization since the dawn of time, and everyone had different ways of greeting one another. "Um..." She started sheepishly, praying Hades wasn't watching her right now. He'd probably know what she was supposed to do. "What are you...?" She wanted to melt into the floor. This was tremendously awkward.
(Awkward goddess doesn't know how to human?)

Zane stared for a bit before rolling his eyes and stepping closer. He gripped the odd woman by the shoulders and helped lift her to her feet. "So what i your name?" He asked, now extremely skeptical about who she really was. This was probably one of the oddest humans he had ever actually met, meaning she most likely wasn't.

Persephone tensed up a little when he pulled her to her feet by the shoulders. He was trying to help her up. Duh... Feeling even more foolish she glanced around nervously before replying. What was a good name for this time period? "Uh, Cassie," she said. Persephone never gave people her real name anymore. No one since before the common era believed her when she told them who she was, and today people just assumed her parents were history buffs or something. Her real name was just always too much to explain.
It dawned on her that she couldn't even remember the last time she'd talked to a human. She spent most of her time talking to Hades on the phone or hanging out with her roommate, who was a muse. Maybe it would be worth it to get to know a human for once. "Yours?" she asked. That was a normal thing to do, right?

Zane smiled a bit as he gave her her name and was quick to respond. "Nice to meet you Cassie, I'm Zane." The light haired son of Hades said with a cheerful expression that completely contrasted his lineage. He was beginning to lose his suspicion of this woman being anything more than a regular undergrad.

When he smiled, the resemblance to her husband all but disappeared. She hadn't seen Hades smile in decades. Somehow his grin embarrassed her (maybe because she was comparing a worthless human peon to the god of the underworld) and she looked away, adjusting her glasses. "Um... Were you going somewhere? Or something?" Was that a normal question to ask?
