A giant estate that lights up every weekend with ostentatious parties ranging from 7 pm to 6 am. The parties are loud and wild, and the owner of the house is rarely seen, and makes himself very removed. Except for the atypical and rare times he decides to join in, and there are really only rumors of that.
No one is really entirely invited, it is simply something everyone shows up at. The owner sometimes tells people to invite everyone they know, and he seems to like his parties to be roaring and wild. All kinds of people show up, and there are always lots of festivities happening.
You find yourself invited now by a friend, in the middle of one of the largest functions this giant manor has ever held.

Oliver Preston had sat in the atrium, smoking alone until he started to hear music begin. It chimed happily and heavily, and Oliver smiled softly as he heard the beginnings of another raging party. He stood in his atrium until there wasn't much left to salvage from his second cigarette, and by then an hour or two had already passed, and most of the party's guests had arrived. Though there were still the loud rumblings of cars rolling up his long driveway and parking themselves about the house, and that would continue for the rest of the party, Oliver found that most of the guests happened to come in the beginning. He spent most of his time observing the people, he should know.
Oliver entered the house smelling like plants and cigarettes from the atrium, and found himself quickly wafting through crowds and kissing couples until he entered the kitchen, leaning against the counter and starting up another cigarette. He was a man at an average height, dressed well and clean shaven. He had nutty brown hair, short and cut frequently and wore a silver watch with lots of little things on the inside. He wasn't extremely out of place, no one ever dressed too casual. He simply watched, admiring happily how people enjoyed themselves at these things. He always loved that.

(ooc: a thread so Gatsby-esque deserves a post format from me. This is an awesome concept. Also - what's the time period?)
Rin battled through the crowd, fighting to make her way to the kitchen. All these people around and not a single one of them had a light. Unbelievable. Sure, she'd forgotten her own at home, but she hadn't been counting on every single other person at the party to have forgotten theirs, too. The kitchen was apparently the only place to get a damn flame around here. She noticed Oliver leaning against the counter and heaved a great sigh of relief upon seeing his cigarette.
"Hey, can I get a light? Whoever owns this place doesn't mind, right?"

((ahh I was hoping no one would see my gatsby-esque c;< that's brilliant though, cause that's pretty much everything I was going for euhuehue. I was thinking more modern, unless you'd like something else? ))
Oliver, concentrating on the bright smiles of a group of guests, didn't even notice the girl come beside him until she was right beside him. For a few seconds he wasn't sure exactly what she had said, but then the sounds from her mouth leaped into tangible sentences. As soon as he realized he pushed a hand deep into his pocket, and gently set a lighter in her hand. His eyes lit up lightly with her second question and a light smile spread on his lips. "Oh, anything goes here," He answered in an orotund, clear voice, raising his hand with the cigarette to gesture to the people in the kitchen. His eyes lifted to the girl again, and he ran his eyes up and down her once to try and figure her out. Oliver made perfectly sure he only observed her once, not to be creepy or crude or give her a wrong idea about him.
Oliver Preston rarely interacted with guests, let alone people, but when he did he tried to be good company. He tried to be a chivalrous person the best he could in conversation, but he had to admit he wasn't the best converser. His eyes went drowsily back to a group of chattering people and he let a smoky breath out. "Have you been to one of these before?" Oliver tried in a friendly fashion, hesitantly pulling his gaze from the crowd and setting it on the girl again. He wore a light smile, one that appeared gentle but overall might have seemed honeyed.

(ooc: fantastic lol I was hoping for something more modern! Also - post format abandoned; too much trouble to click on it.)
The man seemed a little distracted, but he produced a lighter from his pocket and handed it to her. "Much obliged," she said, pulling a carefully wrapped joint from her pocket. She'd been waiting to smoke it with some friends, but she'd gotten separated from the group looking for a lighter and they had their own weed. As far as she was concerned, she was perfectly fine enjoying her joint on her own. She leaned against the counter to his side and lit the tip. Inhaling deeply, she then handed the lighter back to Oliver while she held the smoke in her lungs. She answered his question on a slow exhale. "Once - a long time ago. Must've been months by now. But I remember this place. It's hard to forget." She offered him the joint. "Want something to go with that square?"

((yeah I was thinking of doing a post format but for walk ins it just doesn't seem so necessary o A o Yours was cute though <3 ))
Oliver watched curiously as Rin drew a little cigarette from her pocket, eying what it was for a moment before he realized that it was indeed, not a cigarette. He took the lighter back just as gently as he had handed it over, and dropped it into the depths of a pocket. He went back to casually smoking his cigarette, not even looking to her as she answered his question but he nodded carefully, especially smiling a little bit when she noted that it was hard to forget. That was very right. Oliver paused for a moment when he was offered the joint, but his smile grew to a grin and he took it with a small "Thank you," and brought it to his lips. Gingerly, he took a big puff and handed it back, his smile immediately growing a little. For a second he coughed a little as he attempted to exhale, laughing nervously. He didn't really like to partake in partying, but he could not refuse such a nice offer, could he?
Oliver nodded softly as he gave her it back, making eye contact again and fiddling now with the cigarette in his hand. "Ah, maybe I should just stick with cigarettes, eh?" He snickered, and raised his own to his lips before looking to her again. "I just got here, haven't had time to do much. I'm glad I found you, you seem to know how to enjoy yourself. I never know really what to do in these things." Oliver joked lightly, attempting more conversation. That surprised himself a little bit, in a nice delightful way.

(Haha yeah it just felt like way too much effort for a walk-in, plus I'm using the format in a different RP. Thank you though!)
Rin grinned as he coughed on the exhale. Obviously he wasn't used to anything less smooth than tobacco. She took it back and sucked in another hit, listening to him. He seemed confused about what to do with himself at this huge party. It made sense - he did seem a little uncomfortable. Uptight, almost. She nodded thoughtfully before replying.
"Well, to be honest, you're doing exactly what you're supposed to do at these things," she said. "Trust me, this'll just help you out," she said, offering him the joint again. This time, she plucked the cigarette from his fingers and took a drag. A trade was fair, right?

Even if he was being a little deceitful, he wasn't lying. He never really had an idea of what to do, he simply joined in on occasion but mostly liked to just see people be happy. The majority of the time he locked himself in his room and chain smoked a packet of cigarettes before passing out. If he thought too hard on it, he would decide that that was a very destructive hobby, but he wasn't going to. He made a point to not think about his smoking.
Oliver shrugged when she said he was doing fine and blinked when he was offered the joint again, taking it back and once again lifting it to his lips. This time, he didn't cough and was able to hold it in a little bit more, but he did have to swallow hesitantly after. He took one more drag before handing it back, then took his cigarette back, liking the trade they had established. He returned to the familiar flavor of the cigarette. "What do you assume of someone who lets all these people in their house?" The man asked the question with a wry grin, now not distracting himself with other people. He had turned to her a little bit more now too, now that their little trade of a lighter had started a conversation.

She flashed him a proud smile when he didn't cough and took a hit off the joint when he handed it back, surrendering the cigarette as well. There was nothing like the combination of tobacco and weed.
She suspected there were many things she could assume about someone who threw parties like this, but only one or two things came to mind. "You mean the person throwing these things? They're probably lonely," she said with a shrug. "But I'm pretty sure parties like this don't make you any less lonely." The weed was starting to take effect, but it was slight. "Sometimes there's a whole crowd of people and you just get lonelier." She offered him the joint-cigarette trade again.

He wasn't sure what he was expecting her answer to be, but it wasn't that. He was happily surprised with her answer, raising his brows and exhaling a big puff of white smoke. Oliver nodded thoughtfully, trading back with her once again. "Very true." He added, and said nothing on his opinions of the party-thrower. Instead, he wanted to ask more questions. He struggled a little to not cough this next time, and finally ended up snickering hoarsely, raising his arm to cough shyly into. "What is your name?" The man managed out, pushing back the joint to her. "And what is such a cute gal doing with so much weed?" Oliver teased with a big grin, narrowing his eyes a little to her.

"We're gonna have to work on this coughing thing. You'll be a smooth smoker by the time I'm done with you," she teased as he tried to cough discreetly. It was endearing, in a way. She hadn't met a guy who wasn't used to weed in a long while. "I'm Rin. And what I'm doing with this weed is no secret - sharing with you, right?" She wasn't about to tell him the real reason, and she hoped he wouldn't notice her cop-out. "What about you? Got a name?"

Oliver laughed with her mild teasing back, rolling his eyes lightly. "Right. Okay." He murmured gently, but he did look back towards her, now finding himself more intrigued by her presence. He found himself often overly aware of things. Like the fact that she didn't say her last name. He felt then, he would not have to. But other things, like maybe her quick excuse, he didn't really catch. "Mmhm," He answered in a nod, a simple agreement as he carefully plucked up the joint again, and passed over the tobacco. "Oliver," He answered, putting the joint between his lips so he could hold a hand out to her. Rin was a nice name. He liked that it had one syllable. One syllable names were always easy to remember, and comforting to say, he felt. Oh man, he wasn't entirely sure, but he could feel the effects of the weed start to soak into his veins. He also wasn't entirely sure if that feeling was normal. "Do you like plants, Rin?" Oliver asked with another drag, hesitant but not coughing.

Rin, glad he hadn't called her out on her excuse, took a slightly longer hit off the joint than usual. There was something about him that suggested a generally distracted state of mind, and she wasn't sure if it was the fact that he'd been smoking alone in the kitchen at this huge party or something else. Something more concrete, perhaps, that stayed with him no matter where he was. She raised a brow at him when he asked her if she liked plants and resisted the urge to make a joke about weed. "I've never really thought about it. I guess. Why?" The tobacco-weed trade off was turning into a little dance between them. Or maybe that was just the joint taking its effect.

Oliver was glad himself that she didn't really question his question so much further. The simple 'why' was good enough, and probably well deserved considering it was rather out of the blue. But if you really thought about it, most questions ever asked were out of the blue. Was he high? "There's this," He paused to articulate, swallowing and using his hands to gesture with his words. "Really, really big atrium, just full of plants. It's amazing." He said dreamily, sending her a big grin. He liked the atrium. He wasn't ridiculously fond of plants. But plants were nice. And it was a big open glass space. And that was nice. Back and forth, back and forth. Tobacco, cannabis, tobacco, cannabis. He watched the trade now with wide eyes, holding out his hand for the other one once she took one back, or handing one over as soon as he was given one. "I'm sorry, was that weird? That was a little odd. Hm. You should go see it. It's neat." Oliver started at the short joint in his fingers, turning it lightly before taking another drag. No coughing, but a little "Ahem" afterwards and he handed it over blinking through watery eyes.

Rin smiled at him, amused at his increasingly dreamy method of speaking. The joint was definitely affecting him. She had a little bit of a stronger tolerance, however, so she wasn't quite as high - she was experiencing more of a pleasant buzz. In between his wild gestures she caught word of an atrium and having a look suddenly seemed like a great idea. He seemed fascinated by their exchanges as well and she laughed when he asked if his behavior was weird. "No, not too weird. Besides, we're all kinda weird. It's good to let it out sometimes." She paused, taking a drag off his cigarette. "Plants, huh? Let's see them. Lead the way,"
