The Visiting Priest
A roleplay between Innocent the raven, Petra Crake, and Mildred "Sunny" Greenbell. Shortly after Petra's meeting with Lettie, Innocent and Petra have been caught and teleported far from Shyregoed by an angry local Panymisian cleric. Stuck in Mishkan, they've gone to seek refuge with one of Innocent's previous converts, a tenant on the manor of Lord Rowan Caldwell, while they plan their next move. The time is late evening, shortly after service, and many of the Obscuvian converts on the manor have taken time to hold a small gathering to welcome the familiar mendicant priest and his unfamiliar ward. All tenants familiar to the host, both Panymisian and Obscuvian have been welcomed at the gathering.

As a plague who had been raised by monks, Innocent was not terribly used to parties. Amongst the crowd of merrymaking Obscuvians, he stuck out like a sore, feathery thumb, and doubly so as a Plague amongst humans. However, the warm welcome was appreciated, as he and Petra had been teleported out of Shyregoed to the middle of Mishkan by an unfriendly Panymisian mage. It was not the sort of thing that happened often, but it did happen, and Innocent was only grateful that it had not involved any violence. Before he traveled with an apprentice, he could just turn into a raven and fly away from such confrontations. Now he had to think of a human's safety.
Really, it had just been lucky that they hand been stranded somewhere near enough to find Paul Yarrow. Of all his Mishkanite converts, the man was the most congenial, a prosperous tenant of Lord Rowan Caldwell, and very well disposed towards Innocent, as his son had been able to find placement in a prestigious Obscuvian monastery through Innocent's intercession. The Yarrow family had all been more than pleased to hear of Innocent, though they had been wary at first of Petra, her disease being somewhat more troublesome in the wheat-rich west. Innocent had made it clear that she was his ward though, and soon they had taken her to heart enough that he could leave her to fend for herself at this gathering. He was barely able to hold his own at social events, and so he had been forced to strategically retire, and debate theology with Mr. Yarrow, who seemed to believe that having a son in orders made him a liturgical expert by transmission.
He tore himself away long enough to check on Petra, leaning in and asking, "Remember, there are some Panymisians at this gathering. If you debate with them, it may be good practice to use what I've taught you." He smiled faintly and added, "I'm sure if you could convert some of his neighbours, Paul Yarrow would be beside himself with delight."

Ac.Wings SO SORRY FOR THE DELAY ;o; Despite the unexpected method of transportation, Petra was thoroughly enjoying her time in the Mishkan countryside. Relative to Shyregoed, it was much more similar to what she was used to back home, except grander -- but that was likely due to the company with which they had found themselves. After traveling alone with Innocent for so long, Petra was quite impressed to discover that the mendicant priest had, well, friends. Favorable acquaintances yes, or members of his flock, but the kind of people to throw a party for him? That was a welcome surprise.
Not that the Quietus seemed to be entirely comfortable with the current situation. Petra didn't blame him; though in her childhood she had loved social interaction of any sort, it was made much more awkward when the person she was talking to kept staring at her hands. She supposed the gossip was inevitable, what with her being the unfamiliar half of the pair. Excusing herself politely from the conversation, she rejoined her travel companion and mentor, who was debating theology with his friend. Petra held back a giggle. Even his casual conversations were decidedly singular in subject. His request only served to prove her point. "Of course Father, because naturally conversion is a favorite entertainment of young people at social gatherings such as this," she replied with a smile, hoping that they'd spent enough time together by now that he'd know she was just teasing.
As Petra left the two men alone again, allowing Innocent to presumably resume their discussion about the nuances of theology, she let that giggle escape her. Only Father Innocent would come to a party in hopes of converting people. "Well, you can lead a horse to water..." she remarked to no one in particular.
