 CONFRONTATIONEvery year, Rise delighted in the Winter Feast, where all tribe members and customers of Rise & Shine gathered to make merry from dawn to dusk, clearing out the year's old stock consuming their fill of fine food and drink. This year, however... Flanked by his lieutenants, Rise hurried to the front of the store, where the commotion was hub-bubbling. He'd expected a crowd, and there was a crowd, alright - but instead of happy tribeskin gabbing their merry way to the gathering ground, they were milling in place, ogling the new feature barring the way: a monstrously gangly structure of wood, mud, and stone. ...It was a barricade. A ragtag bunch of rabble-rousers had erected a barricade in front of his beloved store. " What is the meaning of this?!" And so the despot emerges... Terrible Charm pressed his lips together, fixing the leader with a grim eye as he trotted to the pinnacle of their fine creation. " The Sun also Rises," he proclaimed, " for too long has your reign proceeded unchecked. To flaunt your hoarded wealth in
such a manner while others starve and freeze in the snow is unforgivable. We - The Friends - have come to oppose your tyranny." " Now, hold on," the patriach cried, " we're not bandits - this is a business of repute, and we take on anyone willing to work! Do you expect us to deliver food to those who would not lift a hoof?
As the saying goes: give a Kin a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach a Kin to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime - and we aim to feed for lifetimes." " But what if the Kin cannot fish?" " We do what we can, but with all due respect, we are but part of the circle of life." The blond buck lowered his noble eyes, as if to say, and there you have it. Tossing back his golden curls, he turned to the masses and called, " Who is to stand with one such as that - and who is to stand with us? Won't you give us your reasons, that we may show who is wrong, and who is right?" " Oh yes," Rise bared his teeth in a humourless smile, " I'd like to hear that, myself." " Ooh, ooh - I'll start!" Take the Watch hopped onto the barricade excitedly, "Our leader is hotter!" Silence descended...then an appraising murmur broke out from the crowd. Charm did not blink, but nevertheless managed to give off the impression that he wished he could find a hole to retreat into. Before anyone else could fire a riposte, Pull Through charged to the front with Camellia perched on his back, " We've got chickens!" Rise and Charm studiously avoided each other's gaze. This was not exactly the way either had envisioned things going. |

Smash and Mash wasn't having any of this- and neither was Bash, if her dearest companion would allow him to speak for her, seeing as he could not.
"Snow?" she said, looking around at the smattering of white. "You think this is snow? Hah! Try a mountain sometime, pretty-" she paused. No horns. No scales. No beard. "Pretty... you." She cleared her throat and pawed at the ground- speeches weren't her strong point. "Anyways, is it not the business of individuals to assist as they see fit? Mandated charity is, er... in itself tyranny? So, uh, it's ok to be a business because that means we have personal excess to share with those in need? I don't really know, I just SMASH THINGS."
She dropped her eyes to the ground, looking at Bash, who'd hopped from his usual perch between her horns and was sitting by her hoof. The little frog licked his eye and contemplated a fly- the very picture of a‎ bourgeois fat cat. Or fat frog, as it were.
"Besides, what on earth do you have to offer in regards to the field of applied SMASHING?"

Why The Friends? Swansong had only shown up to trade for fish; she might have been pretty, but she was pretty lousy at fishing, and winter forage was thin on the ground. But there seemed to be some kind of confrontation happening, and if nothing else it would at least be entertaining.
But she seemed to see much more than just an entertaining spectacle; the challengers actually seemed to care a great deal about each other, and this appealed to her greatly. Though they called themselves The Friends, they seemed to be something more akin to a family.
Swansong had always wanted a family. True, she had her sister- but there'd always been a level of disconnect between them, and their relationship was... borderline unhealthy sometimes, at least from her perspective. These kin seemed much kinder. And they seemed- well, just so noble. Almost tragic, really. She knew she needed a reason to join them, and she could really get behind their message of caring for the weak- it was actually kind of inspiring. "I'm with you!" she shouted, knowing that as a random stranger, she'd probably get weird stares. "I believe in anybody who fights for those who can't fight for themselves." She bit her lip as she realized there was no way Rise and Company would be ok with her trading for fish after that little outburst. Still, the hunger pangs seemed to subsist just a bit. She could be strong- if only to prevent further embarrassment.

Why Rise & Shine? Tipsy, somehow, had passed out in her 'lab' the night before, and now there was a commotion on the other side of the barricade as she shoved her way to the top, rolling a stoppered log as well, her eyes alight with purpose... or maybe that was just the glaze of hangover. She pushed kin out of her way, smiling and cajoling the invaders. "What's all this, then?" she asked loudly when she'd gained the peak. Someone embarrassedly whispered an explanation to her, despite being of The Friends.
"Oh. I thought we found a new type of party," she murmured to herself, disappointed. Now, however, she found herself the center of attention and she cleared her throat, solemnly gazing down at friends and Friends on both sides of the wall. The tension built, most wondering how long it would take her to forget to breathe and fall over.
"My dear fellows!" she called in a high, clear voice. "How can you say that we are tyrants, when so much has been gained by our association? When I was very small, I was poor and abandoned, lonely. But I had a talent, and by the motherfather I followed my heart here to make that talent grow. Here, with Rise and Co. I can do so much more than I ever could on my own, with tools and techniques at my disposal unlike anywhere else. And I am no longer alone. Here is a beacon of hope for those with the desire to create, providing the means to do so!"
She grinned, took another breath to speak, and all waited for further terribly unexpected wisdom to come. She braced one hoof on her log and rose up, the picture of burgundy magnificence. She was not fancy to look at, but at the moment she was as regal as any above her.
"Let's get drunk!" she crowed, popping the seal on her finest, richest barrel of elderberry and fig wine. She'd been saving it for a special occasion. |

The Killing Moon stepped forward once the others had spoken their piece and faced the stunning yet clearly misguided buck with a charming smile. "It is impossible," he began in a reasonable and calm tone, "to constantly give to others. If there is no order, it simply becomes a meaningless sacrifice of time and energy. We must look to ourselves and our family first, before we can assist others properly."
His gaze swept the barricade, voice suddenly as sharp as flint. "You speak as though starving foals are regularly turned away because they have nothing to trade and that we sit upon our hordes of food and laugh at the misfortune of others. Perhaps you should spend a day in our midst instead of showing up on our doorstep and embarrassing yourself with false accusations. You know nothing of our tribe."

The speaker was a dainty Acha and he met The Killing Moon’s penetrating gaze with half-lidded eyes and a sly smile.
"A system could have been put in place long ago to feed the starving masses through the long winter months. Your many employees, those who hunt and deal in the vast Swamp could easily carry food with them to give to those they find along the way."
He moved towards the barricade, eyeing Terrible Charm with a definite gleam of interest.
"Let the tyrant fall," he murmured playfully in passing. Oh yes, Take the Watch had been most convincing.

Why Rise & Shine? Defend, as far as he could see, saw that both sides had honorable and noble intentions behind them. It was just that, well, the way The Friends spoke, it was as if kins who could not help themselves were being lumped with those who simply chose not to help themselves. And something about that raised his hackles.

Why Rise & Shine?
Sunlit Rock laughed, a biting sound that almost seemed to make fun of those who had come before. A grin was spreading across her face as she approached. "Hello Killing Moon, it has been a long time." She smiled, a mocking sweetness in her look before turning back to the gathering. The doe had originally come to trade a banter with the aforementioned buck, as their previous conversation at the Flower Festival had been cut unfortunately short. This, though, was much more interesting. That didn't mean she wouldn't take the time to ignore the proceedings if it favored her, as her nonchalant attitude would likely rustle some fur, something she would rather enjoy. Taking a moment to look over the gathering, she looked at the leader of this 'friends' group. The fact she was looking down on him was rather obvious, her eyes screamed it, and her stance showed a careless disregard.
"If you truly wished to help those who could not help themselves, why not bring them here? Why waste your time, keeping others from enjoying a good meal, and letting all this food go to waste? If you truly cared for your cause, you would bring the food to them, or hunt for them yourselves. I do not think that hampering the skills of others simply because another cannot keep up is what the swamp would have intended, but either way, you defeat your own purpose. You claim to want to help those in need, but when has this group ever hurt them? They simply do what they do, and are good at it. If they took food from the hungry, or were stripping the swamp of it's prizes then your cause might be just, but the way you prance around, saying that wasting this food is for a noble cause... I can only assume you simply want attention."
She smiled, though like before it was a mocking smile, and it was clear she was making fun of them.
"Honestly, your cause is nothing more then a sad attempt to feel righteous, I would find it much more valid if you actually tried to do what you claim they should. If they can hike food around the swamp while attempting to do their job, why can't you?"
The doe turned back to Killing Moon, purposefully ignoring the proceedings, heavily implying that anything they might say in return would mean nothing to her.
"So, shall we continue our conversation from last summer?" |

"Whaaaat, no way!" Long Ago frowned at Take the Watch. "Rise is...definitely...err..." She colored a little bit and the last words came out barely a whisper. "...hotter. ...uh, please don't tell anyone I said that." At any rate, the high-minded ideals went right over her head...though if she'd actually been listening, she might have realized that if she'd joined the Friends, her ability to distribute mushrooms to the masses would be greatly increased. For good or ill. Bullet dodged!

Why Rise & Shine?
Nobo had just been stumbling along on those clumsy hooves of hers when the sweet scent reached her. It was potent and wonderful, like the fallen berries she often found on the swamp floor long after harvest. The sound of other kin reached her next, and her curiosity grew until she was tripping forward.
Next thing she knew, Nobo was pushing her way through the crowd, reaching her destination. A swollen barrel filled with sweet, strong juice and bowls for all. There were kin talking, it seemed important, but, the juice was more interesting, to her at least. But still, she listened as the deep red bloomed on her tongue, lending her a queer and delightful humming to her mind. Blah blah, feed the helpless, blah blah, earn your supper. It was dumb, really.
"I don't get what the big deal is," She hiccuped after her third bowl, "If you're useless that's your own problem, not theirs. Get over it."

Why Rise & Shine? All this nonsense about chickens and which leader was hotter had Smiles cringing. There good points fired here and there, though, so she attempted to make her thoughts known. "Th-there is not th-th-th ..." She shook her head, no one was going to hear that. The doe closed her eyes, braced herself(causing her to stand in an awkward position), and forced herself to use her best approximation of a 'Mom' voice.
"There is only so much the Swamp provides. This tribe is constantly innovating new ways to save food for longer than it's natural life to better provide for those that cannot provide for themselves. While it's true that compensation is asked for, especially when delivery kin such as myself risk our lives to get it to someone, it's never more than they can part with." She tossed her hair and opened her eyes, resting them on Terrible Charm. "I've been payed with a large stick before. Something that had managed to save me from a boar later. I challenge you to tell me how that's terrible."

Why Rise & Shine? Terrible Charm was a looker, but the claim that he was hotter had Whatever seeing red. Hotter? Hotter?! "RUBBISH." It came out as a bellow. "There is none as attractive and perfect as Sky Fell In!" He nodded, and looked his way to the front ... "Oh," they meant Rise. I Do What I Want flicked hair out of his eyes. Whatever, at least he'd spoken up in defense of the tribe. It was sure to win him points.

Which is it?! You can dress up what you do however you want, but in the end you are all just fat pigs in chicken costumes."

Why Rise & Shine? Meticulous Owl saw the squabble going on between his fellow tribe members and a group calling themselves the Friends. While Talon didn't want to gain any enemies, he wasn't too thrilled that the tribe he had grown fond of was being threatened. At the first opportunity of inviting silence, he spoke up.
"Rise and Co. is a wonderful group of kin whose only desire is to provide a service to others. We help kin with more than just food. We are at the height of innovation and this allows us to create new ways to help. I can attest to the fact that because of this tribe, all kin will soon much easier access to all food that grows here in the Swamp, even the food that seems unreachable or out of season."
Talon's heart beat faster than he ever thought it could, "With all the different events that this tribe attends on a regular basis, I'm surprised that you aren't already familiar with us."
