Ilum walked along the water's edge, looking for a broken spot in the ice. Soon the water would flow out into the ocean, but the water would remain fresh as it pushed away the saltier ocean water. He just hoped somewhere the current would be fast enough that it would not need to be broken by force. There had been a couple times in the past where he'd won him self a cold dunking for trying to get a winter's drink.
His plans changed though, when he noticed a dark shape flitting back and forth beneath a somewhat thin bit of ice.
"Why... Hello," he muttered, leaning over to get a closer look at the shape. It wasn't large enough to be a mer... maybe a young one? What if it it wasn't either? Was it trapped down there? Or just playing? He raised his head and looked back and forth along the river, "Uh... Does this belong to anyone?"

Lady Aria Starstone Kaimana was examining the ice from below, seeking a weak spot as well. He was slightly annoyed. He'd taken a wrong turn, distracted, and ended up in the fresh water stream. He was hoping to get a chance to view where, approximately, he was in comparison to home. And the ice was very thick, to the point of irritation.
He blinked, noticing a shadow over him, just as he heard a voice. He slowed, and tilted his head. Had the... whoever it was... above him found something up there? What silly person lost their belongings on the ice? If it melted, the water'd take it! He froze, and spotted the perfect spot. A weak patch, not too close to whoever was above him on the ice. He swam for it, and used his hooves to kick, KICK, KICK until he'd broken enough that he could pop up through it. He stuck his head out, and turned to the other. Seeing it was another stallion, he called out "Sir, what did you find?"

When t he iced broke, Ilum flinched, jumping back and away from the stream and nearly stumbling into the deep snow. However, when the tiny head poked out of the water he took a step back toward it. It... sounded perky. In fact, it didn't sound like it had been in any danger at all.
His ears flopped over, a baffled expression on his face, "Well then. Aren't you just a tiny thing. You can... Uh, breath? Under there? Isn't it cold?" The thought that someone's babe had been rushed down stream from the current was driven from his head. This was clearly a mer of some sort. A tiny mer of some sort. Maybe he'd been right about it being a mer foal after all? "I was worried that you'd been trapped down there under the ice."

Lady Aria Starstone Kai wanted to laugh, though he controlled the urge,w hen the other fellow stumbled. He watched the other for a moment, head tilted, to be sure he hadn't taken any hurt.
However, then he spoke. Kai gave a mighty frown at being called tiny. He might be SMALL but he wasn't tiny! How dare the other! He was a full grown stallion! "I'm not tiny, I'm exactly the right size, I'll have you know!" He blinked, then, at the other's second words, and made an urrrrk face. "No not trapped. Just confused. I got turned around and wanted a hole to get a view of where I'd ended up!"

"Oh," Ilum smiled. "Sorry. I saw you under there and thought maybe someone had lost something under the ice. I had no idea it was really a mer of exactly the right size under there."
He looked up and down the river again, "Well, where are you trying to go? I can see a lot further from up here than you can on the water. I know the area too. I mean, the dry areas anyways. If I can help at all I will."

Lady Aria Starstone Kai eyed him a little, trying to decide if he was being mocked. Finally, he decided not, and wrinkled his nose. "Ahhh. No, just got a little lost, rather then having some one lose me. I'm a Seathi/Nixie." He said it with pride. He knew no other such hybrids! Of course, he... didn't know any other mers really, which was a sad thing.
"Ah? Ahhhhhh I'm... trying to get back to the open water. I make my home near the main river where the 2 legged ones seem to reside. I like to watch them..." He sounded wistful.

"Usida? I've seen a few about, but I've never had a pleasure of meeting one," he smiled. "Are you like our usida then? Your kind just doesn't grow as large as some of the other breeds out there?"

Lady Aria Starstone "Usdia, those! Yes, Seathi are like the Usdia of the sea... and Nixie are like... like the small Kelpies, I guess is the closest I can think of." He nodded sagely, not at all aware of how unsage he always sounded.

Ilum shook his head, looking quite amused, "That's fabulous. I had no idea there were such intresting things hidden beneath the waters. Anyways, I can tell you which way the ocean is. That's where you want to go, right?"

"Well, to be honest with you I don't really have a home. I've been just wandering about, it seems. Maybe someday I'll meet someone I want to settle down with, but really it's just me, and I don't really see the point of staying in one place."

Lady Aria Starstone Kai blinked in surprise. "Aren't you... lonely?" He hated that word, it was his life, but he couldn't imagine NOT being lonely in a life such as the other descibed.
