Gods. Sebor hadn't really believed in them, although she did know others worshiped them devoutly. Her feelings on gods had just recently changed, having met one, and now she wondered how many others there were, and if there were any that might be called upon to help her cause. She loved the Stormborn, she really did, but the way they treated females as a whole disgusted her. Sebor was a tough lady and wasn't afraid to speak her mind, but she had realized after joining that what would normally cause a male to back of just made them laugh here. It was infuriating, and she wanted to see something done. She'd have to wait, though. Sebor was a patient female, willing to wait and reap the rewards when they were ready. There were those she had spoken to, a few males and some females, that felt the same way she did, that things weren't right, but that wouldn't act on their thoughts. They were content to go on if only to avoid punishment or banishment. Things never changed without a bit of pain, and while Sebor was willing to endure it, she couldn't do this alone. She needed some friends on her side. That was her mission today. To find a friend, someone that was strong and wouldn't take lip from a male just because they had a mane. She set her sights on the watering hole, hoping that there would be someone there to meet and befriend.

Since Njal had come to power Dis had been playing least in sight, trying her best not to remind the warlord and those who thought as he did that she was, in fact, a female reaver with several successful vikings to her name and a reputation for brutality in battle. Most of the time the excellent posture her mother had beaten into her helped her in this and as long as she kept her mouth shut few lions recalled that she was, in fact, a lioness with a talent and taste for violence. When she opened her mouth, however, there could be no doubt of what she was.
For example, she was presently swearing a blue streak at a fellow reaver who had decided to playfully splash her and in the process flung half of a fish corpse into her face. She wasn't sure if that had been accidental or not, but until or unless he apologized he was going to get an earful. Fortunately there weren't too many other people by the river, so the chances of being overheard as she insulted the lion's looks, ancestry, and sexual preferences were slim.
He was quick to apologize and depart, which left Dis smirking as she lowered her head to the cold water once more.

Sebor heard the commotion before she saw it, her ears perking up in surprise at the language that was being used. While she wasn't adverse to a curse or two here or there, whoever was speaking had a particularly foul mouth. When she finally spotted the culprit, she noticed the object of the lioness's attack slinking away. Brows raised, Sebor headed in the direction of the brown female, curious now. "That was certainly a verbal beating," she commented as she got closer. Although strong language was something she felt was only needed sparingly, the fact that the female before her had chased off a male of this pride without so much as a claw being exposed impressed her greatly. She hadn't been able to instill so much as an ounce of respect from the males that she had tried to talk to. "Either he's a rather horrible Stormborn or you're a very fine one," she added, sitting down a few paces from the lioness to let her drink if that was what she chose to do. "Would you indulge me and inform me which it is?"

Dis looked over her shoulder at her unexpected company. Her ears flattened in brief dismay when she realized that she had been overheard, but there wasn't much to be done about that and she would not apologize for her behavior. That arse deserved it, although she was wary at the careful way the other lioness began, making sure she didn't detect censure in the words.
"A little of both," Dis answered when she decided that she was not about to be chastised for her language. "I'm a damn good reaver, and so is he, but he knows I can kick his arse in a fight four out of five times."
She paused and then added in a thoughtful tone, "Not that I do that s**t in public nowadays. He's got ladies to impress and I've found my life is easier when I don't remind people what I can do."
"But look at me blocking you. I'm sorry! Damn thoughtless of me." She shifted in case her spot was in some way preferable to the one occupied by the orange-eyed lioness.

Sebor's interest was peaked considerably as the other female said she was a Reaver. She hadn't met a female to carry that title yet, and now here she was. Perhaps this was a gift from the god she had met just a few days prior, even though he had said he didn't know anyone that might have been able to help in her cause. The offer to move was met with a quick shake of her head. "No, please, don't move on my account. I'm perfectly fine here," she said, holding the brown female's gaze. "Forgive my ignorance, but I'm still rather new here. I was under the impression females couldn't be Reavers." She settled down, ready to listen to the explanation. It was clear this female didn't take lip from anyone, which was similar to Sebor, but the difference was she was actually respected. Sebor doubted it was the language she chose to use and rather her past that backed up her bite, which she didn't have, unfortunately. Having only joined a few moons prior, she was still a no-name here. "Sebor, by the way," she added after a pause.

Dis grimaced. This was what came from having a warlord like Njal. "We can be, it's just damnably difficult to receive acknowledgment and legitimacy under the current a** of a warlord."
Before continuing her explanation Dis registered the introduction. "I'm Dis. It is good to meet you, Sebor. I take it you have aspirations beyond your current status. Good!"
Contented that she was not inconveniencing Sebor, she lowered her head to drink once more, enjoying the chill water. Going a-viking was wonderful, but the water was never as bracing as it was at home, in her opinion.
"Funny thing is, Njal calls himself a ******** traditionalist, but if you talk to a lawspeaker, you'll find there're older traditions that place females as males' equals. There're buggering female warlords and captains and first speakers if you look far enough back." She shook her head in disgust.
"Trouble is, ******** nobody ever asks questions. And if you do, you're not being gods-damned ladylike." She sneered at this last word. "It's a bloody travesty."

Sebor was very, very interested with what Dis had to say. Females could be reavers? It just seemed to take a lot more work than it did for a male. That was of little matter to her, she would do whatever it took to gain respect. Her strong language made Sebor snort in amusement, although she could tell Dis had been here long enough for the annoyance to be real and valid. She herself had been here for long enough to know that this attitude would get old quickly, but perhaps with the grit Dis showed she'd be able to strive on. "So females used to be treated with respect...that's curious," she murmured softly. "How long ago was that?" From the way Dis spoke it seemed to have been before anyone here was born. This Njal...Asban had mentioned him as well, and laughed when she said she wanted to speak directly to him. It seemed he was the root of this little problem. Surely he could be spoken to and have some sense knocked into him. Well. Maybe not knocked. He was in charge after all. "Ladylike...the males here all wear their manes so fancy it's a wonder they don't wish to soil them with blood and dirt," she said with a quiet snort. "I think they need to step back and take a look at what they're saying."

Dis gave a leonine shrug. "I don't know if I'd call it respect, the way things were. It was just more...fair. There're those who say the way we're treated now is more respectful because they're not fighting with us or letting us take risks."
She was making more of an effort now to speak without punctuating her phrases with curses. Why she bothered, she couldn't have said, except that she got the feeling she might've met a rare kindred spirit and she wanted to make a good impression. Nowadays better impressions were typically made with cleaner language. It was a real effort on her behalf, actually slowing her speech as she concentrated.
"I don't know exactly. I learned about it when I was a cub. But there're adult lions here whose mothers went viking. I don't think it was exactly common with that generation, either, but it wasn't discouraged. Maybe." She wrinkled her nose, frustrated at her inability to produce the requested information and then further frustrated because her self-imposed ban on swearing meant she couldn't express her frustration.
Sebor's reference to the braids and adornments males wore in their manes made her grin though. "Oh, I don't know. I like the way they look. And, really, they're not all that fussy about keeping them clean until after the battle. At least they weren't when I was viking."

Sebor sniffed softly at the idea of being respected by not being allowed to do anything other than sweep the den floors with her tail and produce cubs. Hardly respectful in her opinion. Still, she knew she was outnumbered here, so it wasn't likely to change any time soon. The fact that Dis had similar feelings was encouraging for her, though. "I see. So it wasn't too long ago," she murmured softly. Perhaps she could figure out who had mothers who would go out and see how they felt about this whole 'den mother' approach to females. Unfortunately, to really get a foothold into the pride, she needed to do just that. Have some cubs, raise them to be Stormborn, strong and fierce, but with an understanding of why lionesses should be allowed to do things lions could. "Still. Rather frivolous of them," she said with a little flick of her tail. That wasn't the matter at hand, though, so she pressed on. "So, how did you go about becoming a reaver? I suspect it was not easy. Did you have to muscle your way into being allowed to do things, or did you just do them and no one stopped you?" It was important for her to learn how to go about achieving the same title as Dis. She didn't want to be cooped up in the pride forever.

"Frivolity's not a crime," Dis pointed out. "Not in moderation, anyway. I've seen thralls brought in from prides where they do way worse stuff than our males and their manes. But I've got my own biases, having grown up here."
She was willing to let the matter lie, having said that much, and likewise dismissed the topic. Sebor's question about becoming a reaver was far more interesting to her, and one she knew more about, never having had a mate, or even a serious attachment.
"It wasn't terribly difficult for me. My brothers were all reavers, and I grew up fighting with them. When I said I wanted to come viking, they knew I could hold my own and let me. Sometimes it's just about knowing the right people, you know? Aesir took a few female reavers with him when he would go viking, though he can hardly help you at this point." She scowled. She had not been personally acquainted with the former warlord, but she had preferred life under his rule and that of his predecessor.
"There are more liberal captains, even some female ones. They might be willing to take a chance on an untried female, but not likely. You'd have to prove to them you can hold your own." She gave a half-smile, knowing just how difficult that could be. "It's not impossible."

Sebor listened intently, nodding just a bit. All brothers...she knew what that was like. Granted, she hadn't stuck around her family for long, but she did know the 'joys' of being the only girl. Still, it had helped her grow up tough and quick, and she wouldn't have had it any other way. "There's female captains?" she asked, the surprise clear in his voice. "They do a very good job hiding away from me, then," she muttered, tail flicking back and forth in mild irritation. She could only find the stuck up males, it seemed, or the spineless females, with Dis as an exception. "Well, I'll certainly work on proving myself," Sebor finally said, lifting her head to gaze at the other female, a little smirk on her face. "Like hell I'll lay around and be content with my status as freeborn. If you find yourself rising in the ranks to become a captain, keep me in mind. I would gladly follow one like you into a fight or out for a viking." Princess_Feylin I think we can wrap this up with a post more apiece =D

Dis drew up short at Sebor's question. Were there female captains still? She knew there had been female captains when she was younger, during Aesir's reign, but she didn't know what had become of them. They tended to keep elite bands and she had never been good enough to measure up. Perhaps they, like her, had found it prudent to allow themselves to fade into obscurity for the time being. As she thought about it, she realized that maybe there weren't. The specific lioness she had been thinking of had become a lawspeaker.
"I was mistaken. There used to be female captains. One at any rate. But I think she's found a new profession. Whether that has to do with Njal or some other reason, I don't know. Sorry." She grimaced at her error, but managed not to swear. A part of her mind wondered if she would later explode in expletives as a result of holding them all in during this conversation.
Her grimace vanished then and she grinned, pleased by Sebor's determination. "I will definitely keep you in mind. In the mean time, if you want someone to spar with, I'm willing."SilverLutz Sounds good! Thanks for helping me out with this.

Sebor frowned slightly as Dis corrected herself. Past tense, then, there used to be female captains. She wished for a moment she had been born a few generations ago to enjoy life under the old leader. It seemed like the Stormborn had been the perfect place just a generation or two ago. Shaking her head, she turned her thoughts to happier subjects. A grin spread across her face again at the offer and she nodded just a bit. "I'd like to spar with a lioness of your caliber, if only to learn what it takes to make it here. I'll certainly take you up on that offer sometime." Not wanting to overstay her welcome, she bobbed her head in farewell and turned to go. She felt as though she'd made a connection with Dis, as far as what females should be able to do if not how males styled their manes. She could learn a lot from the brown female, she thought to herself as she moved away from the water. And just as she was hungry for respect, she was hungry for knowledge. FIN Princess_Feylin No problem! Sebor would love to spar at some point in the future X3
