A problem solver. That's what people called Alaric when they weren't angry at him for treating them as objects or a collection of usable skills. He was a lion who made things happen, and sometimes that required ruthlessness and resulted in hurt feelings. Personally, Lars couldn't believe any lion who called himself a Stormborn captain would be so flower-blooded as to complain about being objectified. It seemed so weak and childish, which were two things Lars had no time for.

Lars' tail lashed irritably and his ears twitched as he recalled the captain he'd just left. How could he be so gods-cursed sensitive? Lars had been completely correct in telling the lion that he wasn't equipped to handle the plan he had asked Lars to come up with. The reavers he had chosen weren't the right band for the plan, and Lars had told him so. The captain had been unwilling to change either his band or the plan, so Lars told him he would succeed only in making an idiot of himself.

And then the captain had told him to get out. Imbecile.

User Image Drifa was on the prowl. While she had the skill to make things like her mother, the lioness did not want to spend her whole life doing that and end up having BASTARDS. Her mother had done that, and it was not something that the young lioness thought was a good trade off. To avoid her mother's fate, Drifa had to find herself a husband. She was watching every male she saw, determining if they were available, if they were worthwhile, etc. She had come to the conclusion that the best husbands were not going to be bards, but Reavers or Captains.

Drifa did not want some silly male that was useless in a fight. Even SHE could fight, and those bards it was a toss up on if they could survive HER attacking them. She needed a strong male to give strong cubs, and so that was what she wanted in a husband. As she walked along, the lioness came past one of the most hardline Captains around. Alaric had a reputation, and while Drifa didn't think she had a chance, she would try anyway. "Hello, Captain." A simple start seemed best. It let her test his mood.

"Reaver," he corrected the lioness automatically. "I'm not a captain."

"Unless you weren't talking to me, in which case I should ask if you've recently hit your head and are hallucinating." He paused. "Have you, and are you?"

The lioness talking to him was young and pretty, and seemed vaguely familiar to him, but he kept thinking that she ought to have black markings instead of gold ones. Right. Talaitha was her mother. Talaitha was a crafter. Useful on occasion. He didn't know much about her daughter and what she had grown into. He actually couldn't remember her name.

"Do you know your name? Where you are? Should I ask how many toes I'm holding up?" His humor reared its head at strange times, given the mood he had been in less than a minute ago. No explanation. It didn't bear further thought, he decided. He wasn't peeved anymore and that was an improvement.

"My apologies. I assumed a lion with your reputation must be a captain not a Reaver." Drifa was hoping so very much she had not just offended the male. If she wasn't mistaken he seemed to be taking humor from it, that had to be a good sign. "I did not hit my head, I assure you. I am Drifa, daughter of Talaitha, Freeborn and crafter for the Stormborn." There was pride in her voice as she gave her mother's ranks, but there was regret in her heart that she could not give a father's name. No, she was a b*****d and that was not an amusing thing to be.

"You are quite the handsome Reaver, aren't you? And hear I was expecting some beat up old captain to have such a bit reputation... instead I'm seeing a strong, healthy Reaver. You are quite impressive." Drifa was laying it on a bit thick perhaps, but that was what she did. She tried to flatter her way into good graces when possible. Now if only she could use that as a snare for a husband. She was sure it had to be able to be done. Bards did it to females all the time, surely it should work on males as well.

"Drifa." He nodded. "I know your mother. We've worked together in the past. Of course, since I don't know if that's really your name I can't tell if your head's been damaged or not."

His good humor evaporated rapidly at Drifa's next words, which he found inappropriately timed at best, and just plain inappropriate at worst. Either way, it was awkward and unnecessary. He no longer had any desire to take part in this conversation. He wanted to go beat on someone.

"You were mistaken. Since you claim there's nothing wrong with your head, I'll be on my way."

Drifa winced. Well that has not gone well. She should apologize for the offense. She was not sure WHAT part of it had been offensive, but she certainly had dug herself quite a hole apparently. "Sorry, that did not come out as intended... I guess my charm needs work. You said you know my mother?" Maybe she could salvage this a little, maybe.

"I do a bit of crafting work as well, though I'm not as dedicated to it solely as my mother is to hers. Perhaps you would like something made sometime?" Drifa had a sinking feeling that she had really peeved this Reaver off and that had not been at all her intention. Maybe she should hang around some of the bards for lessons on flirting.

"You needn't apologize. People say stupid things all the time. I'd not call you out for it."

Lars sighed. He wasn't being pleasant. A part of him was aware of that, but he hadn't decided whether he cared enough to change his behavior. But, really, who went around talking to people like that in public? It was so deeply peculiar and flowery.

"She's crafted a few things for me in the past. If you're less dedicated to the work than she is, I doubt I'll commission you to make anything for me. But I appreciate the offer." Be pleasant, he reminded himself. "What do you do, Drifa, if not crafting?"

"I have taken time away from my crafting to search for a husband. I am a crafter most of the time, but a lioness really should think of the future as well. A strong husband to sire strong cubs is a decent goal in life. Besides, I cannot fight well enough to be a Reaver and that is discouraged these days." Drifa had actually thought about taking up Reaver, but she hadn't been old enough to take the challenge before things changed and she wasn't such a great fighter that she could whip enough people to make them LET her with the Warlord against it. She was much better at crafting anyway.

"My mother is so dedicated to her work it eats her life. I am not sure that is healthy." Drifa shook her head to herself and sighed. Her mother worried her sometimes. Thing was her mother had won a fight against a Reaver to get into the pride, why couldn't she see that was a good reason to find a strong husband and give the pride more strong blood? Crafting was much better as a occupation of ones time when their husband was not home than as the whole purpose of ones' life.

Ack! Cold terror struck his heart and his blue eyes widened with genuine fear. Lionesses on the hunt for husbands were utterly terrifying to him. Thinking of the future was all well and good, but when he thought of his future, a wife and cubs weren't part of it. At least not in his near future. There was still plenty of time for that.

He latched onto something she'd said that didn't relate directly to an attempt to lure him into a matrimonial trap. "That's a piece of stupidity there. Njal is wasting a great deal of potential by refusing to acknowledge the abilities of females outside the den."

Lars didn't have much to say on the subject of being too dedicated to work. He loved his work. Except when he had to deal with imbeciles, of course, but that was less to do with his work and more to do with the world. Lots of stupid people in the world.

Drifa was glad that the male had not decided to strike out at her or some such for annoying him. He had continued the conversation that HAD to be a good sign. She would just play it safe and not try any charming again. "And if he keeps it up he may well lose that ability in the females... I mean many of us would have benefited from training while we were still young to build strength. I know only enough to defend myself if I must... My mother could have taught us more, but she did not see the use of teaching something we were not allowed to use. It is a shame."

"What do you think? Obviously you believe females can make good Reavers, but do you think that things will change back at some point or that there might be value in learning more on my own?" Not that Drifa new anybody that would teach her to fight. Her mother's friends that were Reavers were much to busy out on Vikings. It made her very upset really that the option WASN'T there for her. She didn't mind if she didn't get to be a Reaver, but she wanted the chance to do whatever she wanted. Perhaps this male would understand that at least.

"I think you're right, that Njal's beliefs do put the pride at risk of losing fighting lionesses, but I expect there are a lot of lions chafing under his ways, and at the next breytast vindar he will find himself challenged by someone less restrictive. Things will become less restrictive, I think, once leadership changes."

He did not mention, however, the difficulties involved in defeating Njal in combat. The lion was a fierce fighter. That much was obvious from the way he had brought down Aesir. It hadn't been just an impressive fight, but a brutal one, and the way he had maimed the former warlord, well, it definitely sent a message to lions who might consider challenging him for his position.

"Even so, it couldn't hurt to learn more on your own. The ability to defend oneself is absolutely essential, and a Stormborn who cannot do that has no right to call themselves even a freeborn, but there is a saying among us, 'we do not sow.' I've always felt it means that we take what we want, and to do that a lion must know more than mere defense."

He shrugged. "There are still female reavers around, if you look, and unoccupied males who can be persuaded. That said, don't look to me to train you. I do not have the appropriate temperament for that sort of activity."

Drifa nods to the lion's words. He seemed quite wise for his years, rather like her mother could be at times. "I hope things do change. I might like trying for Reaver if I were allowed to, but when one does not have the chance it makes it very hard to know if one really wants to do such." Maybe being more useful with combat would make her a better wife, who knew. It had to be better than trying to sit still crafting ALL day, or being harassed by bards. She really wanted to be useful to the pride, but the lioness was not sure how to do that without being a wife.

"My mother has a few friends among the Reavers... I'm sure I can find one to help me practice. I am rather glad I spoke to you, Reaver... You are a very sensible lion, which seems rare in the pride these days." Well, he might not be husband material, but he certainly was smart. "Would you object to my speaking to you again sometime?" The young lioness could certainly use another friend if nothing else came of this. Even her mother had friends among just about every rank. Being a crafter did have its uses, but it was not good for getting a husband.

Alaric acknowledged the lioness's musings about the difficulties of knowing what one wanted to do when not permitted to try different things with a minimal inclination of his head. He did not disagree with her, but he also didn't have anything to contribute to the subject. He knew he was fortunate to have been allowed to pursue the life he wanted without anyone trying to gainsay him.

He remained silent, listening as Drifa talked about her mother's friends among the reavers. It did not surprise Lars that Talaitha had friends. She was a fine crafter and many lions probably took advantage of her abilities to turn their prizes into still more valuable or useful treasures. It did please him to be counted among the sensible in the pride, but he did not let it show. He was too stoic for that.

He did not speak until Drifa asked if he would object to her speaking to him again sometime. At that point he looked her directly in the eyes and said, "Yes."

Then his mouth curled in a smirk. "No. Certainly a freeborn lioness may speak to whomever she wishes. Myself included."

He inclined his head in farewell and bid her the same: "Do not die in bed."
