There was a bird chirping somewhere...

Trilling, chirping, happy twitters floating through the air....

Gwenever opened her eyes suddenly, scowling....she hated birds in the morning, especially happy ones. Wait....The sound was digging at her ears because it did not belong. There were no more birds in the Inbetween... not anymore.

Where am I...

The elder demoness blinked up at the brightly overcast sky, and knew she was no longer in the Inbetween realm. The bird had quieted, but she could clearly hear a breeze ruffling pine trees and dead leaves. Looking around, she appeared to be in some sort of dismal looking forest...It was cold.

How the hell... Gwen was certain she was in the Earthen realm, and she hadnt been here since early on in the war. So so many years past. How had she managed to get back? The war had been raging, the underground cavern bar she had lived at was always busy, her companionship had always been welcomed...

And it was cold. She felt this not on her skin but dimly radiating from inside of herself. The gentle wind brushed at her, but it felt so strange. It ruffled her hair, the strands seemed to float of their own accord though. It felt like the wind was somehow blowing THROUGH her.

Gwen looked around, wondering with slight irritation now, where she was and why she would be wandering in the cold with no memory of why or how. With a shock she realized she was standing in the grass. Wiggling her sharp claws, she gave a little yelp, and lifted a paw to look at it. To her horror, she could not FEEL the grass or dirt beneath her paws. Only a vague...tickling? She gave an even louder shriek when she realized she could almost see through her paw! It was just solid enough that she could not, but there was a definite thinness there...

I'm not in the Earth Realm either..Oh no. Oh no no no....
I'm...d..DEAD???

The shriek rang out among the trees, her horror giving it the power to manifest in the wooded clearing. There was a scuttling flutter as the offending birds took off for safer trees.

"Oh, I'm definitely dreaming!"

Time passed...possibly.

Silently, a slowly moving shape floated among the trees. Gwenevere, hovering just above the grass, wandered, lost in thought and a deep depression. She moved effortlessly, not walking at all. This was a new skill she had discovered, and it gave wandering aimlessly a whole new meaning.

How did this happen...? How the hell?? She delved through her memories, but there seemed to be mostly darkness. Faces swam up but skittered away, places seemed to materialize, but just out of reach. The elder glided to a rock and settled, staring morosely over a tiny pond. She could not see her lovely reflection, and it was truly the darkest day of her too short demon life.

The ghostly lady's sigh was but a whisper.

Days ...or maybe weeks, had passed. Gwen was sure now she was not dreaming. She had clung to that hope for a long time, but she was discovering the new horrors every day that death would mean for her.

Being that she was not always the most immensely smart of demons, though crafty and malicious at times, she had tried to drown herself...only to come squalling out of the water upon discovering the skin crawling eeriness of it flowing THROUGH her.

She had tried leaping off a cliff in a dramatic scene worthy of any movie, only to find she drifted and floated and couldn't seem to make her self FALL.

The demon had tried screaming, biting trees, clawing, and throwing huge fits, but it did nothing for her new lot in life. She was dead. Just dead, and apparently forgotten.

People sometimes came and went, demons occasionally wandered through. Gwen had even seen a few wayward spirits somewhat like herself, but they were immensely boring or werent aware they were dead and fled from the sight of her. It was clear she now lived in a vast forested area with clearings and water and makeshift graves. There was a boundary, as she had tried to leave, and always ended up walking back into the clearing no matter how far she floated or fell.

The elder sprawled on the grass, staring at the endless gray sky, feeling the strange tickle of plants and coolness of the earth but nothing more.

Suddenly a memory came flooding back. She had been loitering around a seedy sort of cavern, the type where demons had gathered to avoid the conflict and have a good time. Where conspirators hid in shadows and discussed plots and ploys, and the wounded told gallant versions of their war antics.

This had been one she frequented often, soaking in attentions of war torn heroes and seeking thrills with villains alike. Try as she might, she couldn't remember the particular dark and mysterious type she had been cavorting with that night.. she knew he had that dangerous air that always interested her...
They had discussed leaving for quieter places, and on her way out with said stranger, she had seen James. She could remember being shocked, then pleasantly excited to see him there. Vividly she remembered winking at him in that way she always had, and flouncing out in the hopes he'd be even a tad jealous.

That was all, things went dark after that.

Who had she left with? How had she died...?
The demoness wondered if James was still alive. She hadn't seen a marker for him, or anyone to visit. Maybe he knew how she'd ended up like this. Surprisingly, she missed him quite more than she'd ever thought. She missed all the other winiko. Being dead sucked.
