The Bestiary

*Note: The above image is a comparative size chart for roleplaying purposes. The elfhound's nose would be roughly at a tall drow's collarbone the way he's standing. The size in this image is not indicative of how large the pets will be when certed.

Chikkiri:
Weighing no more than twenty pounds, chikkiri (singular: chikkira) are not large or fearsome creatures and serve as prey for many of the deep reaches' predadors- including the drow, who hunt them for their meat and pelts. If kept carefully as a pet, they serve as decent watch-animals, as they emit a high pitched alarm whistle at the first sign of danger, and due to their gentle demeanors they make excellent companions for quiet-natured children.

Salamanders:
(Not pictured) Particularly common in the City of Embers, these diminuitive reptiles are a common sight on temple grounds, especially those dedicated to the city's patron goddess, Van'mali, who holds them sacred. They are a heat-loving species, capable of withstanding temperatures that would roast the flesh from a drow's bones, and as such can often be seen basking or playing in the braziers that pepper the city.

Deer:
At some point in history, deer took up residence in the deep reaches. Over time, their bodies shrank (so as to need fewer resources, and be able to hide more effectively). Now they stand not much bigger than a chikkira. Then something strange happened: perhaps due to the strange energies that occasionally course through the deep reaches, or more likely as a result of eating the bioluminescent plant life that dwells there, the deer began to glow. Most only sport small spots and bars of color along their flanks, but on some specimens the markings are extensive. These are kept and bred by settled drow for meat and hide, but occasionally one finds a place in a noble house as a pet, as their quiet elegance is very much appreciated by the nobility.

Elfhounds:
A relic of surface days, elfhounds are a rare sight in the deep reaches. However, some dedicated breeders have kept the species alive. These days, they are a rough-coated, hardy lot bred for hunting and protecting the nomadic tribes. They serve as watch animals and beasts of burden as well, helping the tribes lucky enough to have them move through the tunnels more quickly and safely. While uncommon, elfhounds can be found in most drow settlements of size, and occasionally in the company of a nomadic tribe, and thus are available to drow of any origin.

Owls:
While the drow did enjoy the company of great hunting owls in bygone days when they still dwelled under the moon, none of those great birds survived the deep reaches. However, when they reached the Silverweald, the drow found massive owls that were native to the enchanted wood, and immediately sought to re-domesticate them. These birds are the result of their efforts.

Serpents:
The warm, sticky environment of the Obsidian Reaches is the perfect environment for reptiles to grow to immense sizes. The drow of Cissilith, who worship the serpent-loving goddess Ssa, hold these reptiles in high esteem and a line of temple serpents has been bred over many generations (of serpents, and a few generations of elves) to be quite loyal and affectionate to their owners. Of course, these serpents are highly venomous and have been used in a great many assassination plots over the years.
