Captain Ruzanski was leaving soon! Ros had heard it from one of the lions in Hroarr's band of exiles and voluntary exiles. The knowledge filled him with cold dread: how was the hyena thrall to join the captain and win glory if the captain and his band left without him?
He couldn't, of course.
That meant Ros couldn't procrastinate any longer. He had to find his owner, and probably his mother, and get permission to go with the captain when he left. The fact that he would have to let the captain know his intentions at some point had not occurred to him. One obstacle at a time, after all. It would be better to find out he couldn't go at all rather than tell the captain he wanted to go, and then have to tell him he wasn't allowed.
"Mooom!" he yelled as he skittered through the band's stronghold, heading for the den shared by Gabe and Azrael, where he figured he might find one or the other of the females who told him what to do on a regular basis.

Gabriel was taking a moment to gather her thoughts. She had heard that Captain Ruzanski was going to be leaving soon, same as everyone else had. For once she was not sure on her determination to stay in this exiled group run by her captain. Her thrall Tatit had had pups and watching them grow had taken a tole on Gabriel. Yes the lioness was a Reaver, but being an exiled reaver was not going to get her cubs any time soon. The pups that she had helped Tatit raise had brought home that point to the lioness. Gabriel and her thrall had an interesting relationship, born from a misunderstanding that lead Tatit to attack Gabriel. The lioness had won that fight, and Tatit had become her thrall, and later her loyal companion. The lioness had respect for her thrall's feelings, and liked the pups she had produced. When she heard Ros yelling, Gabriel perked up her ears. "What has you in such a hurry, Rosvo?" She was the picture of cool, calm and collected. Tatit was in the den cleaning and putting away some things that the lions had acquired. There was a lioness thrall to help with most tasks, she belonged to Gabriel's brother, as well as Tatit's own pups, but she still tried to do as much herself as possible. Pleasing her mistress was a top priority for Tatit. In her mind any lioness that could whip her arse in a fight deserved her respect and loyalty. Besides, Gabriel was not an overly hard mistress to have. She was actually rather nice to they hyena and had allowed her to keep some of her pups. Tatit heard her son yelling and popped her head out of the den. What had her son so excited? "Rosvo, are you disturbing Gabriel?" She knew the lioness loved the pups, but still, it wouldn't do to have them running about disturbing lions. In this pride it could get them into a lot of trouble. The leader of the exiles hadn't even wanted to let any of the pups stay at first, so it was best if they did not go making problems. "Nevermind, she doesn't look disturbed, but do try to be mindful of what others think?"

"Sorry!" Rosvo called to Gabriel, ready to continue his hunt for his mum until she interrupted him. To his mum he replied, "Maybe a little. But I don't think so."
He looked back and forth between the lioness and his mother, dancing in place while his tail swished back and forth. Restless energy consumed him and made him antsy. Exciting things were happening and he wanted to be a part of them. Specifically, he wanted to be a part of Captain Ruzanski's band and return to the Stormborn lands. He'd never even seen them.
"Um...so. It's really good that you're both here because, well, I had a question that I wanted to ask and it kind of would need an answer from both of you. You more than Mum, of course, Gabriel, but also mum since, y'know, she's my mum." He licked his nose and tried to force himself to calm down and breathe before he started panting like some canine.

Gabriel tucked her tail around her paws as she watched the young hyena. He had so much energy. It amazed her at times that he did not burst from it. And there he was prancing in place a bit much like lions did when excited. "You did not disturb me, but as Tatit has pointed out, you should be mindful of what others think. It does not speak well of your control for you to be running about yelling." She gave a small smile showing that she was not really upset at him. "But your excitement is commendable. What is it that you have to ask from us?" Gabriel prepared herself for listening to whatever the pup had to say. It was going to be quite an interesting request, she was certain. If it required her and Tatit to approve it, it could be many things. She was just glad the hyena knew better than to just go DO things instead of asking first. She could certainly say one thing, she and Tatit had managed to get across the importance of permission before doing. Small blessings like that made all the difference when living as they did here. Tatit blinked slowly and came out of the den to sit beside Gabriel. Her son was all wound up about something and that worried her a bit. She never knew what was in her son's head until after he shared and there were times she could really see their feline mistress' influence. He acted more like a feline than a canine most of the time, that was for certain. It did worry her when it came to the things he thought up to do. What if he forgot himself and tried to challenge one of the lions? She would not like her son beaten or dead because he got cocky. "Yes, what is this question you have, Ros?" Oh please let it be something good was all Tatit could think as she waited to hear the response. There were a lot of possibilities in her head right now of what her son could want to ask, and so many of them were not things that would end well for him. She had to admit she could be a paranoid mother at times, but she thought it was for the best with Rosvo at the very least.

"Yeah...I know..." he affected a show of hanging his head as if ashamed of his behavior, but he was an irrepressible young hyena and his mood was on the upswing, which meant somber displays were beyond him. At least convincing ones were. But he knew who owned him and the respect he was expected to show her.
"I've been listening to the reavers in Captain Ruzanski's band, and the ones from Captain Hroarr's, too." With an effort he was speaking slowly and clearly, not blending his words into each other, but the effort of slowing his speech made the rest of him practically vibrate with poorly contained nerves. The nervous twitching was particularly pronounced in his wagging tail and kneading forepaws.
"Captain Ruzanski's like a legend. He's been on this quest that was supposed to be impossible, but the thing is, he did it, you know? He's amazing, and he's going to be famous. Really famous. Songs and stories famous." No. He was becoming sidetracked. Back on track! "When he leaves, I want to go with him."

Gabriel was satisfied with the display of guilt even if it was less sincere with the kneading paws and wagging tail. The pup tried and that was something that Gabriel liked about him. Ros was by far her favorite of the pups just for the fact that he had so much spirit AND so much sense in his head... that and his acting more feline than canine gave him such cuteness. "Yes, Captain Ruzanski is a legend in a way. A great Captain that was sent to do an impossible quest to prove himself." At first she missed the last part of what Ros said.
Gabriel's claws sunk into the dirt a little as the last part sunk into her brain. Ros wanted to go back to the Stormborn lands... with the Captain. She could not blame him, she wanted to return herself at this point, but whom would be responsible for him? He was a Thrall he had to be given to a new master to go unless she went. The lioness took a moment to draw her claws back in and think. "Well... there are two options for this desire of yours to be granted. One is that I find you a new master among the band and gift you to him or her... the second is that we all go with the Captain."
Tatit was not sure what she had expected but this certainly was not it. As her son spoke her heart sank. He wanted to go away from them to the main Stormborn lands. She had been there at first, and it was a bit harder there on a Thrall than out here to her thinking. There were so many MORE lions to order one about and see if a Thrall did something wrong. She was not sure she wanted her son subjected to that environment when he did not have herself or Gabe to guide him. And she knew Gabe would not part with the old female hyena.
"I... am not sure what to say to this, Ros. What you are asking is well... strange." Tatit wanted to ask WHY her son wanted to leave, but she had a feeling it was some felinish reason like glory or such. There was so much of Gabriel's influence in the boy. The options that Gabe gave were sensible, but only one suited Tatit. "Gabriel..." She said not a word more, just looked at the feline, making her request clear. She wanted to return with the boy one way or another. Which meant she would want to take her other pups as well. Grown or not they were still her pups.

Ros didn't sit down. It would have been rude. But it also would have helped keep him still. He could have sat on his tail, and he could hardly prance his forepaws if he needed them to keep himself upright, as he would while sitting. But he was talking with his mistress, and that required a certain set of manners be used. He could lie on his belly with his chin on his paws or he could stand. Sitting was not a posture he allowed himself. It didn't seem very respectful.
"All of us?" Ros asked, his enthusiasm dimming. He genuinely liked his mistress and he loved his mum, but adventurers didn't take their families with them on their adventures.
"I didn't mean..." He paused to rephrase what he was about to say so that it wouldn't sound as offensive. This pause represented a huge improvement in his behavior since puppyhood. "I didn't mean to deprive Captain Hroarr of so many people all at once, or disrupt everyone's lives."
He thought about the possibility of another master in Ruzanski's band. He didn't know any of them very well, but he was sure they were all fine lions, almost as heroic as their leader. It would be a fine thing to belong to any one of them. But...maybe he could even be given to the captain himself. The thought made his heart race.
"Maybe one of the lions in Captain Ruzanski's band would take me."

Gabriel did not like the answer that Ros gave. Not the first one nor the second answer were acceptable to her ears. The look that Tatit was giving her and the way Ros was vying to go alone made up her mind on two things. One they were all going to be going with the Captain, and two she was going to see if there was a decent owner for Rosvo. If the pup wanted more excitement she could find it for him, but she was going to go back and make sure he didn't get into too much trouble in the pride. "Yes, all of us. I had been thinking of returning to look into starting a family, anyway... so I guess it is as good a time as any." Gabriel watched and waited for some of the steam to go out of the pup before she continued. She knew it was not what he wanted to hear. "But I also can see if there is a suitible master for you in the band. Maybe the Captain is as good a lion as he is brave, if so..." She let that drift off so it would sink in a bit harder. Make the pup think on it and it tended to stick with him, or so the lioness thought. Tatit was about to lay into her son for how he asked that question about all of the band, but stopped as Gabriel answered him. At least her mistress had sense if her pup didn't. He likely thought this whole thing was fun and games, and it was not. The hyena did not like the idea of her pup getting a new master, but she also knew it would happen eventually. Their mistress had said different times that the pups probably should be given to masters that would appreciate them more so they would grow further. "This exile thing was a disruption to everyone's lives, Ros. If anything this gives us an excuse to put things back to normal... shame about the warlord we have to go back to, though... he'll give the mistress trouble." And that was all the more the hyena could say without getting herself into trouble. Tatit knew where her boundaries lay. She had to word things a certain way to get away with insulting any lion of the Storm, but she had learned very well how to do that.

"You're going to abandon Captain Hroarr?" Ros asked Gabriel, making sure to sound absolutely horrified. "That doesn't sound like you. You're too loyal for that."
His lip curled as his mother and his mistress spoke. This wasn't going the way he wanted it to go at all. He didn't want his mother along and he didn't want his siblings along and he didn't want Gabriel along either. He wanted to do this by himself. The exile didn't disrupt my life. I was born out here. No one asked me if this was what I wanted, he thought. He huffed a mighty sigh, aware that his thoughts were petty and childish, but they were also true. At least the way he saw it, anyway.
Aloud he said, "I could be really helpful to them, and I know it's not a game or an adventure or anything like that. They don't have any proper thralls who know how to do anything useful like I've been trained to."

Gabriel did not like the tone in Rosvo's voice one bit. How dare he talk like that to her?! She stood and gave him a whack across the face with her paw. No claws out, just enough force to get his attention. "Family comes above all else, Rosvo. I respect my captain, yes, but at some point I have to look out for myself and I will not have cubs out here. I can always feed Hroarr information from inside the pride, perhaps even use my thralls as runners for this information. Thralls are the ones that do the hunting afterall." The lioness had a hard tone to her voice to get her point across that she did NOT appreciate Ros' accusation that she was abandoning anyone. This was probably the first time in a long time she'd hit Ros even with a tap like this. Gabriel did not like to smack the pups around, but there came a point where there was very little else to get her point across to them. "I think your idea to help the band is a good one, but I desire to go home, so we will be going, and you will have a new master among the band." Perhaps she could gift him to the Captain. She just hoped the pup behaved well enough to not make it look like she hated the Captain. Tatit winced when Gabriel stood. The lioness' body language was not good at the moment. She wanted to step in front of her pup to protect him, but she knew better. Rosvo had earned the lioness' ire, and would have to deal with the consequences. The blow was softer than Tatit knew it should have been, and there were no claw marks. She knew how hard that lioness could hit even if the pups had never felt the full force of it. She was grateful that Gabriel showed restraint. "I believe the idea that Gabriel has is a good one... we could certainly run information for Hroarr on what is going on in the pride. As long as we are bringing back food as we are supposed to, nobody would think anything of it." And of course, they would have to keep their mouths shut about what they were doing inside the pride. She just hoped that if Gabriel got a husband and had cubs it would be a husband of like mind to the lioness. Tatit didn't like the idea of a male trying to push Gabriel around or making life miserable for the Thralls.

Ros took the blow and stayed down in a position of submission, but his submission wasn't total. Did neither of these two understand that they were weeks away from the pride? It wasn't as if they could pop there and back. A thrall who stayed away that long would surely be considered a runaway. At least he guessed so. He had never lived in the pride proper, but he was aware of the rules.
"Whatever you say, Mistress. I'm sure you know best."
He kept his chin on his paws and considered his position. Not his physical position. His position in general. The best solution, clearly, was for him to run away. He could follow Captain Ruzanski's band secretly and then be there, waiting, when they arrived. Or he could run ahead and let the pride know he was coming so they could turn out and greet him properly.

Gabriel was aware of the flaws of her plan, but still she wanted to do something for herself and for her thrall. Maybe she would just end up sending her brother out with word. He liked a challenge afterall. The point was she could figure things out later after she was inside the pride and looking for a husband. She gave Rosvo one last look before she went into the den. "Come inside and help your mother straighten the den... I will meet with the Captain later." The desire to give Ros a proper beating was there, but she would not. Tatit looked at her son after Gabriel was inside. "If you anger her fully, you will regret it, son. I got here by finding her wrath, you do not need to earn it yourself." She did not like the idea of seeing the lioness like that again. Gabriel was a scary creature when she was pissed. The hyena thought the role of Reaver fit that lioness VERY well. "Get inside and we will talk more later once she calms down." Tatit's legs were shaking as she went inside. She was afraid of what might happen if things were pressed.

His resolution to run away firmly set, Ros was capable of being compliant and quiescent to his mistress's commands. He had a plan. One way or another he would have his adventure and win glory. He might even be made a freeborn - or even a reaver! - for his deeds. It had never happened before, a non-lion achieving such a rank, but perhaps he could be the first. No, he would be the first!
He trotted cheerily into Gabriel's den. Things were going to work out.
