I've heard a lot about the American pilot for Red Dwarf, but never saw it, or talked to anyone who did. Anyone here ever see it? If so, was it pretty much the same?

there's a feature about the American pilot on the series V special features disc.
and from what they included of it, nnnno it's not anything like the original. I'd call it actually the most awful thing I've ever seen. D:

and Lister is just, so wrong. like, he's not even completely revolting. gonk
the expectations of American culture just completely ruined the characters.

American's have to have their finger in every pie, they wanted their own version of RD because they don't want to admit liking a show that isn't made by Americans
But not this pie!!! scream MY Pie!! *hugs pie*

Yeah seriously, while I may be american I am seriously glad that version never made it. They tried to make an american version of Coupling too but that really bombed.

I've seen very few shows that were re-makes of British shows that actually made it in America. "Three's Company" is the only one I can think of that was good. I think the problem is about reading. Schools in the U.S. don't encourage reading anymore. Everything is visual. British humor has a time-honored tradition going back to Chaucer and Shakespeare of word plays and innuendoes. Sad to say, I think American TV tries to change British shows because it's too much work for Americans to pay attention to and catch the word plays. For myself, that's the reason I prefer British TV and movies to most American made ones.

evabh I've seen very few shows that were re-makes of British shows that actually made it in America. "Three's Company" is the only one I can think of that was good. Amazing. I never knew "Three's Company" was a British remake. Learn something new. And yeah. I'm also glad that The Amarican version did not take off. The lister failure. Looks like a looser not something that crawled right out of a toilet.

Wow. I've just been blinded by a terrible picture! What were they thinking?! Cat is not a woman! Rimmer and Lister look like girls! And where is Kryten? Egads! What a mess!
