Magdalene, known as Mags to the residents of the town, stood behind the counter, wiping down all of the surfaces with a rag. It was late, but that didn't mean her job was over. If anything, it meant her job had barely even started. Some of the strangest people of this world strolled in after sunset. Finishing, she leaned against the back wall and set her eyes on those who were already drinking and eating in the dining room.

Zade and Holly slipped into the tavern, glancing around. It was still relatively full. An anxious look crossed Holly's features.
"It's all right," said Zade under his breath. "We're less likely to be recognized this way."
They'd spent so much time together by now that it was easy to predict what the other was thinking, and Zade knew that Holly was exhausted and nervous from their travels. Striding forward, he knew she would follow a few steps behind him. There was a woman tending to the bar and he immediately heaved a great sigh upon taking his seat. "Bartender? Could I have an ale, please?" he asked politely.
"I'll have one as well," chimed Holly, finding her voice after several hours of silence. He shot her a look.
"She won't, actually," corrected Zade. Holly glared at him. She was almost sixteen - shouldn't she be allowed to drink? Zade never let her do anything fun. Surely after all this time spent traveling she'd earned an ale. Zade, resolute, ignored her icy stare.

Maddie walked into the tavern and saw a few people. She walked straight up to the bar and took a seat. "Bartender after you are done with him could you get me a glass of cranberry juice and some vodka." She stated as she sat in the seat and took her hat off, it was pure white with red ribbons she had used a spell to keep it clean. If she didn't use the spell then it would be stained blood red by now with her lifestyle. It was never easy to defend herself from something that looked so harmless but was so deadly.

What a heavy sigh, Magdelene thought as the young man and his... sister?... took a seat at her bar. One ale. No, two. No--one. The boy wasn't letting the girl have any to drink, perhaps because of her age. She did look quite a bit younger than him, and she was probably a good six or so years younger than Mags. But she also appeared as if she had been through a lot. Both of them did. So Magdalene decided to help the girl out a little bit. "Y'know, the ale's safer than the water," Mags said as she grabbed a mug from underneath the counter. She filled it carefully and handed the finished product to the young man. "Wouldn't want your friend here to contract something serious, would you? Let her have a taste."
Magdalene turned to her next customer, a female with long blonde hair. She wanted a cranberry juice and vodka. Wasn't a request Mags saw often, but she would comply, of course. The brunette put together the drink and handed it to her with a smile. "Interesting hat," she commented.
(WeirdRoseBud: Medieval time period, dear. Not sure cranberry juice and vodka are entirely historically accurate, but I'll play along. XD)

Eren slid through the door of the tavern, cloak fluttering behind him as the door swung closed. He made his way over to the bar slowly, eyes settling on each other person in the bar in turn. After a few minutes he sat down on one of the stools by the wall. Eren cast his gaze upon the young woman behind the bar and gave her a smile. "A glass of mead, dear," he said.

Zade fixed the bartender with a stare, trying to decide whether or not it was a better idea to just let Holly drink the ale. He felt responsible for her, and as far as he was aware Holly had never had a sip of alcohol before. If she didn't know her limits, she could get sick. But they were both worn out, and he was in no mood to argue.
"Fair enough," he said, relenting. "She can have the ale." Ignoring Holly's small, triumphant sneer, he sipped his own drink, turning toward the girl with the hat. She seemed a little pushy, and he was in the habit of suspecting everyone around him by now. Hoping she didn't notice his awkward stare, he looked quickly back at his mug.
Holly, meanwhile, waited patiently for her drink, running a hand through her short blonde hair. Gods, it's been so long since we've even been inside, she thought, peering at the other patrons. Another man walked in and took a seat at the bar. He looked older than her. Suspicious as well, her lips formed a hard line and she immediately averted her gaze. The two of them couldn't afford to trust anyone these days.

The fact that four people had entered the tavern in the last ten minutes confirmed Magdalene's suspicion that the place only came to life after sunset. Turning to the young man who had just walked in, she returned his smile with a grin of her own. "Sure thing. Coming right up." She grabbed a mug and went through the motions, until she had a glass full of mead. Then she placed the cup in front of the man. "There you are."
Just as she set the mug down, the other male finally relented and said his companion could have ale. Mags had to suppress her own triumphant grin as she filled the order. After giving the girl her drink, Mags took a step back and addressed the entire counter. "Can I get food for anyone?"

Eren lifted the mug of mead to hips lips and took a sip, testing the flavor. It seemed to please him as there was a smile on his face when he set the glass back down. "I would enjoy a plate of whatever's cooking," he said to the bartender, "I would also appreciate if you could tell me what is around this area."
Eren could feel eyes on him and turned around on the stool to gaze around the room again, his focus settling on the blonde woman. He nodded, acknowledging her, but didn't say anything.

Holly saw the man nod at her out of the corner of her eye and flinched, blushing a little in surprise. Zade, acutely aware of Holly's body language, met Eren's eyes from her other side. Thankfully, he didn't recognize the other man. So they were still safe.
"I can tell you about that," he said. "We've just traveled a long way. To the North there's nothing but a hilly wasteland, and to the South we're expecting to run into a trade harbor." He took a sip. "Why do you ask? Going somewhere?" Part of the reason why he felt he had to address Eren was because of Holly's discomfort. It calmed her down when Zade took charge of things, and she'd be more likely to relax if she saw that the people around her weren't a threat. Her paranoia was eons greater than Zade's.

Eren turned his eyes from the blond woman to her male companion who was eager to speak. He listened to the man's words, nodding along with them and afterwards said, "Yes, the trade harbor to the south is where I traveled from. Do you know anything about what is out to the east or west? I am in search of a relic of sorts." He paused to take a pull from his mead. "What are the two of you searching for?"

Holly was stiff, quietly sipping on her ale. When would it kick in? She was still so tense. It occurred to Zade that if she was going to drink, she shouldn't be doing it on any empty stomach.
"Bartender, could I get a plate of something hot for her?" he asked, smiling apologetically. She seemed busy with the sudden influx of patrons. Holly didn't react, still huddled over her mug. He turned back to Eren. "To the East should be a small village and a road that's safe for travelers. To the West... I'm not completely sure. We're..." He paused, looking at Holly. "We're just traveling. Just like that." Holly glared at him out of the corner of her eye, as if expecting him to say more. This time, it was Zade's turn to ignore her. "What type of relic are you looking for?"

Magdalene responded to the orders of food with a nod, then promptly send the requests to the kitchen. (For the customers' sakes, Mags would not be cooking their dinners tonight.) She then returned to her post behind the counter, content to listen to the patrons conversing. They were both traveling, and the one young man was searching for a relic. "I think we've got some sort of historian in town," Mags said. "You could see if he knows anything." She was interested in knowing more about both patrons' stories and journeys--and it seemed that the girl and boy who were traveling together had more of a purpose to their travels than they were letting on, as was evidenced by the girl's undeniably hard stare.

Eren listened to the further description and was a little reluctant to answer the more direct question about his business. He stalled for time by sipping more mead from his mug, and was relieved when the bartender tossed her own two cents in and changed the focus of the subject. "Can...you tell me where to find this Historian, miss?" he asked the bartender.

"He lives down the street and around the corner, in a house on the left," Mags explained. "He's old, though, and not very... Well, not very friendly, to put it lightly. A drunkard. You'll have to catch him while he's sober if you want anything useful from him." She had driven him out of the tavern before when he got especially rambunctious and inappropriate, and afterward the man had never come back.
