It had been a couple of days at least since Granny Spiderlegs had given Fiona her dream catcher. The old woman could be seen through the shop's front window, the door paritally open to let in the last balmy moments of mild weather. The smell of peppermint tea filled the air as she moved about with a peculiar grace. She seemed almost to scuttle, a familiar knowing light in her eyes as she paused, then pulled out a second teacup.

Tonight was another night for company.

Fiona had spent quite a bit of time over the last couple days examining the strange dreamcatcher that the old woman at the shop had given to her. Granny Spiderlegs...she was one of the most fascinating people that Fiona had ever met.

There had been something about it that seemed to move into her own body as soon as she had touched it, and at the same time as if something had moved from her, into it, illuminating it, in a way...

The beautiful fairy woman that she had been seeing in her dreams was now seemingly causing her to daydream, coming to her in visions and in voice throughout the day. Fiona had kept the dreamcatcher in her pocket the whole time, of course. It was far too special and important to be left with her pitiful belongings in the shack where she stayed. While it was in a less traveled spot, she didn't figure that such a powerful feeling gift was something to be left laying about. It was pretty enough that anyone would steal it, that was for sure.

She had been so curious about it though, and despite her scanning thoroughly the books she could find in the public library for information about dreams, dreamcatchers and dream beings, she hadn't found anything that quite explained what she was now sure was happening with this woman...Beulah. That was her name. Fiona still forgot it sometimes, but with the increasing frequency of their interactions, it was coming easier to her now.

The young girl figured that the woman who had given her the dreamcatcher must know what it was all about, and maybe there was a reason she had not said much on their first encounter. Maybe she was supposed to go back. Fiona couldn't help but wonder if there were others that had received similar things, and perhaps they would have gone to her for advice, as well. She shrugged these thoughts away as she came upon the shop, standing before the door a moment, watching warm air from inside mix with the chill outside through a crack in the door.

So she must be here...Fiona thought. She went to the door and pushed it open slowly.

"Hello...?" She called, quietly, at first,

"Hello? Granny? It's Fiona...are you here?"

A soft chuckle would reach Fiona's ears seconds before the door opened, revealing Granny's wise eyes and knowing smile as she stepped aside and gestured for Fiona to enter her shop. The girl sounded so uncertain, but hopeful as well. It was not the first time she'd heard such a voice.

"Come in, Fiona, come in," she greeted, shutting the door once her guest entered. "It is good to see you again. Have you been sleeping well?"

Fiona smiled as she spotted the old woman. Something about her made the young girl just feel comfortable, and it was strange, because she had become very untrusting in having been on her own for so long.

"Oh, thank you, it's starting to cool off a bit again." She smiled and closed the door behind her, leaving a crack as it was before.

"Yes, I've been sleeping alright. Been having a lot of dreams about the same person though..." She trailed off. Fiona was unsure, that was certain, but she felt easier the longer she even stood in the shop.

"I thought it might have something to do with your gift?" She spoke softly and shyly.

Granny's smile turned sly at Fiona's question, nodding as she offered the girl something to drink. Nodding, the old woman looked the girl over and was reminded of some of the other children who lived in the area. Some were less fortunate than others, but they all had a certain quality, a tenacity, that she could see in Fiona, as well.

"Perhaps. Would you happen to have it with you?"

Fiona pulled off her mittens and took the hood down from her parka, unzippering it as she came further into the shop. Wild pink and purple hair was revealed from beneath her hood, and she wore a deep mustard yellow sweatshirt under the coat. She smiled wide at Granny and reached into the inside pocket to retrieve the dreamcatcher. As her fingers touched it, she felt warmth and energy, she had a brief vision of Beulah smiling, nodding with encouragement. The young girl shook her head, grasping the dreamcatcher firmly and extending her arm to hand it to the gentle old woman in exchange for a glass of warm milk.

Now that she was here, she was a little nervous to discuss this strange faerie woman, but nevertheless she was really looking forward to learning a little more about these things, and she knew by Granny's reaction that she was in the right place to do just that. After all that combing the library. Well, at least Fiona always enjoyed books and reading, so it hadn't been a waste of time at all, perhaps it would help in her interactions with this being in the future, anyways.

"Here you are, it's been vibrating, sort of...sometimes. It's like...I don't know. I think it has it's own energy, I guess?" Fiona handed the old woman the beautiful, frosty-looking dreamcatcher, she was only slightly certain of what she was talking about, but she figured she may as well try to figure some of it out, Granny didn't seem like the kind of lady that would simply hand her all the answers and send her off.

The old woman took the dream catcher from Fiona with a nod after the girl shed her coat and became to get comfortable. Long, thin fingers crept along the frame of the frost-colored catcher in a light dance, smiling as Fiona began to puzzle out what she could of the object's significance. She was a sharp girl, something that would certainly help her in the times to come.

"You are correct," she agreed, her fingers now delicately lifting one of the strings. She looked at Fiona for a moment, a distant look in her eyes as if she were having two conversations at once.

"And how are your dreams? Are there any changes since you've had this?"

Fiona lightly bit her lip as she watched the old womann examine the dreamcatcher. She watched carefully, observing closely the old woman's expressions and her interest in that one particular string. She was pointing at something, it must be...

"There's a woman. She's beautiful...a lovely faerie who sits amongst wildflowers in all different seasons. I seem to be drawn to her, or her to me...She says she wants to take care of me..." The young girl trailed off, shrugging, looking down at her feet and twiddling her thumbs. Fiona wanted to dismiss the idea, it seemed kind of cruel that it was only a dream. Though, sometimes it felt more than just a dream, but how could she be sure?

"I mean...it's only dreams though, right?" She asked, prying for the answer that she was beginning to think Granny Spiderlegs had. Of course the old woman had known she would be back. Well...maybe it wasn't only a dream. Perhaps she was about to find out?

Fiona hoped desperately that Beulah would come to her for real, but she knew nothing about this sort of dreaming, there had been nothing to be found in any of the books she had read already.

Granny nodded once or twice during Fiona's explanation, never once interrupting her. To think that the spirit in her dream would reveal themselves so early! While not unheard of, it suggested that the spirit was certainly one of the more benevolent ones, and the mention of a winter garden brought an idea to mind. Letting Fiona speak and puzzle out what her dreams meant, the old woman went to a drawer tat had to be wriggled in order for it to open, revealing an array of beads, string, and a few pairs of scissors and pliers. Theses were the most basic tools of her craft, often all she used for some of the more decorative pieces meant to actually bring in an income.

"What you have is known as a Reve, my dear," she continued, looking up to study Fiona carefully. She was so inquisitive and so willing to accept answers, though it was safe to assume she would think them over instead of taking whatever was handed to her without a thought.

"They are a benevolent sort of spirit that feed off of your dreams. I am not sure what it is that drew you to her, exactly, but she seems quite fond of your frost garden.

"I'm going to reweave this catch for you, Fiona. That way, you will have another anchor of sorts to keep your friend safe. In time, she will gain strength through your drams until one day, she can become real. From there, you may part awys, or perhaps she will take you in as you say.

"I would not advise turning this aside. She is bound to you as you are to your ability to dream. One cannot exist without the other. What happens afterward, however, is up to you."

Fiona grinned from ear to ear. She hadn't read about any of this, certainly. It was so very exciting! The young girl was glad that she had made the right decision in coming to see Granny again, though she had kind of wished now that she hadn't wasted so much time reading. Well, okay, no time spent reading was really wasted, but she would have liked to have found out sooner. Such a curious little girl she was.

She watched as Granny retrieved tools in order to change the dreamcatcher, and Fiona wondered what it was that the old woman was really going to do involved...she thought it might be rude to ask, so she listened carefully and thought she would just watch as close as she could and maybe she would find out some more.

"So you think that she picked me, just me? Something special? That's how it feels, I guess. She's always there, sometimes I blink and see her, but then I blink again and she's just...gone. Maybe she has been trying to escape my dreams. But I'm happy that she likes my imagination." Fiona beamed happily, brushing her bright pink bangs aside, nodding as Granny spoke to her.

"Oh, of course I wouldn't get rid of it. I've been keeping it very safe, it's so special..." She trailed off for a moment, gazing longingly and lovingly at the catcher. "I could tell." The young girl added proudly.

Fiona realized that she was indeed being trusted with a hugely important task, especially when the old woman told her one cannot exist without the other. That made her happy though, she wanted so desperately to prove that she could take care of herself, and this was a bonus opportunity, in her opinion.

"I promise I'll take good care of it! And maybe she'll take care of me!" The girl smiled, excited, and wiggled a bit where she stood. It was hard to keep patience as the old woman held her special gift. It had taken a moment to register, but once the words that this beautiful faerie woman could some day become real, tangible...her jaw nearly dropped a little. Her young mind began to reel with the possibilities...

Granny listened to Fiona's happy chatter as she worked. About halfway through reweaving the catcher with new thread and scattering beads throughout, she opened a small drawer and pulled out a flower, setting it on the desk for when she had finished her current task. Fiona's curiosity was bright and left her open-minded in a way that was reassuring. For a moment, the old woman wondered just how many books might have been read before she was sought out.

“Perhaps she will, indeed.” Smiling, Granny began to weave the flower among the threads as she spoke. “Oneiroi are drawn to their Dreamers; it's entirely possible your spirit will choose to stay with you after she has come to her full potential in this world.” With the weaving done, the old woman handed the dream catcher to its new owner.

Fiona watched with wide eyes as Granny re-wove her dreamcatcher. It had already been beautiful before, but with more beads it looked fantastic! She was so excited, she could hardly contain herself, wiggling where she stood as she observed. The young girl sipped eagerly from the drink the old woman had given her, sighing happily and wiping her mouth after she drank.

"Well, that would be just great!" She giggled. It was true, Fiona was becoming very attached to this woman. It was strange, as being on her own she had learnt fast not to trust just anyone, but indeed there was something special about her.

She watched with even more excitement as Granny took a flower and added it into the dreamcatcher.

"It's positively magnificent! I bet she'll like the flower too, I just love it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!" Fiona danced about happily with the newly re-woven catcher in one hand, and the glass of warm milk sloshing about in the other. She nearly spilt on the floor and thought maybe she'd better stop jumping about, she was just too excited.

"Oh, I'll make sure I don't lose it, I promise!" She beamed at the old woman and sipped again at her drink.

It was good to see someone happy about the spirit in their dreams. Usually, Granny mused, it was the lost and lonely ones, regardless of their age. People who needed someone but came up short for whatever reason. Hopefully the spirit would be as loving as Fiona believed.

Once Fiona finished her tea, Granny sent the girl on her way with a small package wrapped in brown paper. It contained a day's worth of food, more if Fiona stretched them out. Though the girl never said anything about not having a home of her own or needing help, the old woman was sharp, and all those children who hung around her shop had their uses.

Another Dreamer had awakened and found their way to her doorstep. Granny could only wonder how many ore would come to her in the days to come.

The young girl was absolutely thrilled. This had been exactly what she was hoping, and all the possibilities had her in a state of euphoria. She couldn't wait to see what else was going to happen, and she hoped that as Granny said, that Beulah would want to stay with her if she did become real. Fiona had so much to think about, and somehow she felt tired now that she had the catcher back. It felt more powerful now...it must have been the re-weaving.

She had a guess at what might be in the package that Granny had handed her, and she thanked the old woman kindly before she replaced her mitts and her parka to head back to her little home. It seemed strange at first, but she was completely comfortable now with the old woman, and Fiona had a feeling that Granny knew a lot more than she had initially given her credit for, even if she had already figured a little of it.

She was grateful for the visit, and looking forward to going to bed that night...perhaps she would find more books tomorrow at the library about lucid dreaming, then maybe she would be able to tell Beulah about her visit to Granny Spiderlegs...
