This is what the reading room looks like. The library is an ancient structure that houses all sorts of rare books. Yes, it is in fact named after the fanfiction section at elfwood.com, but that's irrelevant. Enjoy!

The archmage Sic sat at one of the library's many tables, poring over the tome he'd been searching for for the last week. After prowling through the various libraries in his hometown and then making the journey to Wyvern's, he'd finally found it. The problem was, it turned out, that the only book explaining the properties of taproots in poisonous potion-making was in Silvanesti - his fourth language. Even with several Elvish dictionaries spread out around him, the mage struggled to translate.

Dolus walked among the bookshelves of the library, carefully scrutinizing the title of each time for the one which he sought with an eye strengthened by the practice of his craft. An Illusionist by trade and by affinity, he frequently visited the library, the tranquility and solace of which provided an excellent setting for study, both to learn and to discover. Soon enough, he found what he needed; a tome with a blank cover but for a narrow line of silver runes along the spine-the language used to describe mind-related magics, known as Inlusio. Translating in his mind, Dolus recognized the tome as a catalogue of the different types of mental prowess and resistance a human could possess, from the barely organized, easily manipulated mind of a simpleton to the disciplined, nearly impenetrable brain of a learned sorceror. Dolus plucked the tome from the shelf, tucked it under his arm, then walked out of the row of bookshelves and to a nearby table, where he placed the tome down, opened to the first page, and sat at the chair, too engrossed by the text to notice the other man sitting at a table several feet away, similarly captivated by a collection of books of his own.

Though the newcomer hadn't made a great deal of noise, Sic was easily distracted and looked up right away. The man seemed to be deeply engrossed in what he was doing, which, as far as Sic could tell, was the same as him - translating. He recognized the language as Inlusio. When was the last time he'd met someone trained in the mind-related magics? As an archmage, Sic was forbidden by the Conclave from practicing the controversial sect of magic. Obviously, this stranger was not bound by such limitations.

"You, there." He waited for the other man to look up. "I haven't seen you in the library before. Where do you come from?" Never mind that Sic himself didn't normally come to Wyvern's - he was curious enough to make the excuse to ask.

Dolus looked up in mild surprise, spotting the library's other patron for the first time. Being accustomed to there being no one in the library beside himself, he hadn't expected the other man's presence. Dolus was able to identify the man's rank and affiliation by his clothing and reading material as a high-ranking Mage of the Conclave, an organization which, Dolus recalled, banned the practice of mind-related magics such as the ones which Dolus himself practiced. That would probably explain why the Mage had found interest in Dolus in the first place.

"I could ask the same of you, sir," he said, his voice calm and strangely melodic, "as I frequent this library more than most other individuals. Nevertheless, we have indeed not met, and permit me to introduce myself as Dolus, a traveling Illusionist-a practicer of crafts which the Conclave casts a disapproving eye on, am I correct?"

Sic grinned wickedly, pulling a platinum pendant from his robes. It was magically bound to him as well as to the lockets of the other members of the highest tier of the Conclave, and with it they were all aware of each other and the magic they collectively used.

"Membership comes with its price," he said, flashing the pendant. "So forgive me for my curiosity. I take it there are no limitations on the practice of magic for you? But why practice mind-related arts?"

Sic was the youngest member of the Conclave at twenty-two, and still hadn't outgrown his fascination with the forbidden. It was his reckless streak that caused his cohorts to suspect him. If he listened very carefully, he could hear the pendant hum with their power and unrest. Though their magic was his to share now, it was difficult to get used to the constant connectivity. Perhaps they could sense the other mage at the table, who practiced the magic he wasn't allowed to.

Dolus smiled, and clasped his hands behind his back, standing up from his chair to turn and face the Mage. He could certainly just explain why the school of Illusionary magic was what he had chosen to practice, but why settle for a mere verbal explanation, when he could instead truly show why he had chosen it?

"Why," he said, in his calm, lilting voice, "Because I can do this..."

Dolus' eyes suddenly flashed totally blue, and his body shimmered and wavered before turning a bright, hot shade of orange. Then the orange color burst into active, roaring flame all around the Illusionist's body, engulfing him in a swirling pillar of flame, obscuring his face and body but for the general outline of his form within its folds. Then the firey mass which had been Dolus combusted, showering a fiery pulse everywhere around the library but miraculously missing the Mage who stood watching. Assaulted by flame and sparks, the library and the trees embracing it caught fire immediately, blackening, burning down, and reducing to ash under the overwhelming force of the fire, the knowledge and beauty contained within the building reduced to nothing.

Smirking, Sic watched with his arms crossed. It truly was an impressive display, but he knew it to be nothing more than an illusion.

"I can see how such a skill may be useful to you. I suppose it's more productive for me to actually destroy, however, rather than cast an illusion. Though it is tempting to learn the mechanics of such fanciful magic..." He leaned back in his chair, gazing at the mess. It looked so real. He hoped the other members of the Conclave couldn't sense the forbidden magic around him - they might mistake it for his own doing.

"Oh, but that's not all I can do, Mage of the Conclave." Dolus' voice came out of the air as the elaborate illusion faded away, restoring the library to its normal, tranquil state. Dolus had not believed that the Mage would legitimately fall for the illusion-the book he had been reading earlier, and common sense besides, told him that such a mind would know better-but it still showed the Mage why the magic of Illusion so appealed to Dolus. Not that he was done showing what he could do.

In front of the Mage, Dolus reappeared, melting out of the air before forming into a solid form, hovering a few feet off the ground with his hands placed on his hips. Then, however, more figures began to appear in a similar fashion out of the air, some floating, some sitting and standing in different places around the Mage, forming a multitude of totally different figures; a beautiful noblewoman, slouching stylishly on a chair, an emaciated beggar wrapped in a filthy cloak, sitting huddled against a bookshelf, an armored guard, standing with his hand on the pommel of his sword next to Dolus, a common merchant, floating with his legs crossed and a satchel of wares slung over his shoulder-a collection of individuals as unique and dissimilar as could be.

Then, simultaneously, in a single voice made up of countless different ones, the figures, Dolus himself included, spoke;

"So tell us, Mage, which one of us is Dolus?"

Sic grinned, impressed once again. This man certainly had strong control over his abilities. His eyes settled on the noblewoman. Could it be her? Dragging his eyes from her beauty, he peered at the other individuals. He could be the image of himself, hovering above the ground. Then again, he could be anyone else, too.

The hum of the pendant distracted him even more and the beginnings of a headache took root in his brain. Ignoring the disturbance, he continued surveying the figures one by one. There was no way to know. Dolus was a mastermind, and Sic had no knowledge of this type of magic.

"I'll take a guess. The beautiful woman over there?" he asked, addressing the image of Dolus.

(OOC: Dolus is so cool lol)

The noblewoman smiled, and gave a barely perceptible nod. The other forms of Dolus disappeared into the air, leaving only the noblewoman left, whose form shimmered and faded to reveal Dolus, sitting as the woman had been.
"Good guess, Mage," he said, smiling, "I suppose male desire worked in your favor there. Although, that could easily be used against you. Food for thought, I suppose."

Dolus' trick had not been a particularly serious test of the Mage, but for fear of causing the other man pain or serious anger and provoking retaliation, the Illusionist has settled with a more orthodox, less intensive show. It was not a duel, and in any case Dolus was pleased with the response his show had garnered.

Dolus adjusted his position on the chair to a more casual one, then said, "But I don't believe I know your name yet, Mage. I believe it is your turn for the introductions."
PostPosted: Fri Dec 27, 2013 9:39 pm

"I suppose male desire could be used against me," replied Sic. "But surely not by you? It wasn't just a lucky guess, anyway. You seemed like someone who would emulate a regal noblewoman." He threw his arm over the back of his chair. "I'm Sic. Not ill. That's just my name." He paused, wondering if he should continue. After some deliberation, he decided it was okay. "I guess they call me the Mage of Ages in the Conclave." Idly, he swept his hand over the open book before him. The page turned, although he hadn't touched it.

The pendant had stopped humming at such a high frequency, and it was now comfortable to wear again. He he leaned his head in his hand, fingers tangled in his long silver hair. "What were you studying, anyway? Learning another trick?" Sic had had an glass before him which he had long since emptied. Thirsty again, he cast a silent spell that filled it with water again. When it was full, he took a sip, lazily put it back on the table, and looked back up at Dolus.

Dolus shook his head, a small, idle smile still on his face. "Unfortunately, not everything I do is fraught with complex illusions. One has to learn before one can impress. This," he said, levitating the book up with a flick of his hand, " Is simply a catalogue detailing the different types of mental traits and resistances found in humans. Basically, it teaches me exactly what to expect when going up against people of varying levels of intelligence." Dolus brought the book back down, opened to the page it had been on prior to the conversation.

"I hope, Mage of Ages," he said after a moment, using Sic's nickname, "that my little bout of gender impersonation-whether I seem the type to do so or not-and illusory arson there did not cause your colleagues at the Conclave to come running to see what caused such a large amount of supposed forbidden magic?"
PostPosted: Fri Dec 27, 2013 10:28 pm

"So I guess that book probably has a section for me. It's probably called something like 'Ridiculously Intelligent Mages,' right?" asked Sic, smirking. "It'll probably tell you I'm impossible to deceive. Suppose that can't be helped!"

Upon Dolus' usage of his title, Sic couldn't help but look a little guilty. He should have explained earlier. The Conclave had chosen it. "Ah, about that title... It's actually a joke about my age. Since I'm the youngest ever member of the Conclave, they thought it would be funny to call me that." The smirk quickly appeared on his face again. "As stunning as you are, my lady, I don't think they'll come running just yet. How did you know to ask?" He'd shown Dolus the pendant, but he hadn't exactly detailed how thoroughly its magical surveillance was. As far as Dolus knew, it should only detect the mage's own magic, not anyone else's. Had he been able to tell Sic was getting uncomfortable from the headache? Or was he familiar with the intricacies of the magically bound sacred artifact?
