Really, she had no idea what she was doing here, aside from trying to find something she could take back to the Estate that would keep her entertained. Not that she expected to really find anything here... after all, wasn't this the shop most Hogwarts students went to get their books from? It'd probably mostly be textbooks, then. She sighed. Honestly, she'd done more than enough reading when... well, but that was the past, and she didn't particularly care to think of it at the moment, really. It was all a distant memory, after all... or it would be, once she finally had enough fun to block it out. Honestly, that was why she was even out. She wanted to see if she could find an easy hook-up, maybe convince some man to buy her a drink. She didn't have much money on her, after all, since she wasn't technically supposed to leave the estate without an escort. Apparently, her 'parents' (she scoffed at using the word still) didn't trust her to behave herself while she was out and about. Fine, she hadn't really given them a reason to (the conversation with Edgar had ended with a drink in his face and an assurance that she wasn't going to heel to him), but still. She was a grown woman, she didn't need a man on her arm to go shopping. Actually, quite the opposite; having one made it almost impossible to pick up another one, after all. She sighed, tossing her jet-black locks over her shoulder, staring at the rows and rows of books, already fearing that her suspicions would be confirmed; it seemed to be organized based on lessons at the school, and there didn't seem to be much in the way of higher learning. What a waste of time.

                                                                      ═════════════════════════════════

Casey Ryans

I remember a life where I lived as a girl named Acacia Persephone Chaisty, a girl from a pureblood family.
She listened to her family. She followed the path set for her from the main family. She was a Slytherin like the others.
She was quiet and demur. She never questioned the path set forward, but she fell in love with the wrong sort.
A pureblood witch from Slytherin gave up everything for love to marry a half-blood Gryffindor. Is it any wonder the family disowned her?]

Wand: 11 3/4 inch, Cedar, with Peacock Feather, spiral shaft
Dressed: simple and affordable
Owner of Flourish and Blotts

Casey had just opened the shop and not having any workers yet was responsible for the work herself. She actually was blessed that Cara's husband Dr. League was willing to give her the loan to purchase the shop. She doubted the ministry would be pleasant to work in seeing her family that had disowned her after her marriage to her husband. Hearing the shop bell she stood up from behind the counter where she was pulling out a collection of books in law.

She took note of the patron, older than the school age children that would be more likely to frequent the shop. Then again the school year wasn't done yet, was it? "Bienvenidos a ..." she began quickly in Spanish, not thinking before pausing. She had been in Paraguay so long she was used to not speaking English to others not in her family. At least she had spoken Spanish and not Guarani. "Sorry, I have been out of the country for a while." She said with a smile and a bit of a blush. "How can I help you? I am Casey Ryans the owner of the store. Is there anything specific you are looking for? If you can't find what you are looking for I am able to do special orders, of course."

She waved off the shop owner's apology, not really caring for her excuses. It wasn't as though she really cared to speak with the woman, anyway. Although, when she gave her name, Callidora blinked. Ryans... she knew that name... But clearly the woman was no one of importance, otherwise she wouldn't be working in a shop, owner or not. Anyone worth knowing who bothered to associate with a shop simply owned it and left the running of it to someone lower on the totem pole, after all. She pursed her lips a bit, and looked the woman over. "I"m not... particularly looking for anything. Just... browsing. Although I had hoped the store's selection wouldn't be so... restricted. Seems like if it's not a school textbook, you don't carry it. Pity." This was said with a light sneer. Honestly, she wouldn't have even bothered coming here if she'd thought she had any other choice. But, then, perhaps she could go to Hogsmeade... wasn't there a book store there, as well?

She was quiet and demur. She never questioned the path set forward, but she fell in love with the wrong sort.
A pureblood witch from Slytherin gave up everything for love to marry a half-blood Gryffindor. Is it any wonder the family disowned her?]

Wand: 11 3/4 inch, Cedar, with Peacock Feather, spiral shaft
Dressed: simple and affordable
Owner of Flourish and Blotts

Casey held her smile. She wasn't used to sneers and snide remarks beyond the occasional remark to the oddity of a redhead in the villages of a Paraguay, things such as her or her family being tourists or easy marks. It was quickly dismissed when she showed her fluency in Spanish and especially in Guarani, the preferred language of the country, though most spoke both languages. No, this was different, it reminded her of her time at school as a Slytherin or with her old family-the one who had disowned her. Casey figured if she could deal with poisonous spiders visiting her kitchen she could deal with someone looking down at her.

"Well the school year is about to end so I prepared the shop more for those who would have more of a need for it during the coming summer," Casey answered, holding her smile. "I wouldn't dismiss something so quickly, though. We have most of the leading books of interest, not just textbooks. And, as I said, if there is something specific you are looking for we don't have in stock, it is highly likely I can order it for you. Some books are not stocked out of lack of demand or for the sake of tastefulness."

Casey was not particularly impressed with the patron. Of course, she could tell that she did not make a particular impressive impression on the woman either. It was obvious she looked down at Casey and her choice in stocking the store, but what did the woman expect? Flourish and Blotts was more known for catering to students during the summers than others and the summer was fast approaching. Of course, judging by the woman's appearance and how she held herself, Casey couldn't help but wonder why she would have come into the shop in the first place. She actually reminded Casey some of her cousin Cara, especially when Cara was younger, who rarely was the type to make an appearance in the library during their school days-unless you counted her occasional snogging scandals.

When it comes to how to live his life he can't be told
Says he's got it all under control
Thinks he knows it's not a problem he's stuck with

But in reality it'd be a problem to just quit
An addict and he can't hold the reins
The pain is worse cause his friends have it the same
Tries to slow down the problem he's got
But can't get off the carousel until he makes it stop

A black widow clung to its lifeline; eight sable legs articulated in tune. It’s web dangled from the gutters of the shop. It was the heed of the harpy, the call of the spider strumming her harpsichord. The crows cawed in a flurry, strangled feathers and droplets of blood splattering from the strong beaks shredding into the weak. Remington’s footsteps echoed in pursuit just outside of Flourish and Blotts and at once they froze, their necks swiveled on their spines to face him. Each and every single one. Caw, caw, caw, their wings flapped hard and they took to flight, even the broken one, battered and bruised as it was.

Chord, he shook his head. She had a flair for the dramatics, too. His black roughspun cloak clung to broad shoulders and draped down to the floor with the inlay pattern checkered of the family crest, the English Bullmastiff. Hidden beneath was his enchanted armor, he didn’t yet trust the world to go without it. Above his surcoat, the dim gold breastplate and pauldrons embossed a leaping mastiff at its center, along with several nicks and dents from warring memories long since passed.

But his eyes of gold didn’t glitter, not like they’d once had. Raw, barren power cultivated his features, dominating attention as the door swung open to his heavy hand. Sharp features and sins fixed his stare on the only two women in the bookstore, and smiled. It wormed on his face, delightfully slow and purposed. His tongue thrashed behind sharp canines, excitement alighting in his vision. Prey, it was just what this hunter needed. Freshly shaven, the vigor of youth roared. ”Afternoon ladies,” the voice crept, chilling to the bone like spiders crawling down your back. Slow, greedy eyes flickered back and forth between each, soaking up what their auras spilled out. ”—tastefulness is such a fleeting concept these days, isn’t it?” The sinister drawl of his voice was coated, sugary sweet. He’d manage to walk in on their last fleeting statements, just in time. The disowned pureblood (oh yes, he knew of her family well enough) seemed genuine, entirely strained, he could only imagine, because the socialite had her nose stiff in the air. Could this have been a cat fight he just interrupted?

Or perhaps instigate?

”I believe you’re wasting your time, my dear,” he flashed a coy white smile, gold eyes batted a wink to Casey Ryans. ”She doesn’t seem the type, unless, of course, you’ve got the latest edition of Witches Weekly.” He smirked, his eyes now trained on Callidora. ”Isn’t that right?”

Casey raised a brow as Remington Nott entered the shop and added his own comments. Oh yes, how had she forgotten that England had its own share of poisonous and deadly creatures just like the tropics she had lived for several years. It almost made her wonder why she came back, of course, it was for practical reasons because Hogwarts was the school best suited for her son and it was better to acclimate him to England a year or so beforehand than jump right into the change. "I suppose tastefulness you could say is determined by the cultural majority," Casey said, seeming rather unperturbed. "However, I think some things are merely a matter of common sense and don't need to be argued upon."
"And, I suppose since I never had much interest in gossip I never thought to stock the store with magazines. I suppose it is a thought," She answered with a shrug. "I'm not averse to making profits off those shallow enough to eat up gossip and what not. I would say it might serve me well to catch up on the current gossip, but sadly I care about it about as much as I did when I left the country around eight years ago."

The false charm of Remington Nott and the sneer of Callidora may have been something she hadn't seen in a long time, but that didn't mean she was unfamiliar with it or could not handle it. In the end, this made her all the more thankful she hadn't bothered with applying for a ministry position. At least here owning the shop she could always throw them-and any other patron- out if they annoyed her enough.

Callidora had scarcely had time to reply when they were joined by another. Her eyes widened as she recognized Remington Nott. She arched a brow at his snark, rolling her eyes. As if she would expect him, or any other man like him, to have anything to say that wasn't dripping with contempt and sarcasm. Normally, she wouldn't care, of course... but in this instance it was angled at her. "As if I could be bothered to read such a pointless rag. I'd much rather make the front page... my mother would be sure to see it then, and she'd have a fit." Her eyes gleamed at the thought. Actually, that wasn't such a bad idea... Callidora didn't particularly care for gossip one way or another, she simply liked to be informed... and the information she wanted to have, truly useful information, could never be found in such a place. No, one had to dig far deeper to learn anything of value, a lesson Lenore Tempest had apparently never learned, because she did, in fact, read the trashy magazine. She turned to the shopkeeper, effectively shutting Remington out of the conversation, although she couldn't say why. To provoke him, perhaps? To make him look at her rather than the rather plain girl before her? She wasn't sure why he'd decided she was the one to aggravate in this situation... were circumstances different, she would've expected it. But, as they were... he had no reason to annoy Callidora Tempest, after all. Unless he were doing it for her attention... well, she wouldn't give it to him, then. Simple enough, really. And honestly, he'd already started prowling? It hadn't been that long since... well, if he wasn't going to dwell on it, neither would she.

She offered a small smile to Casey, one clearly for Remington's benefit and not any sort of kindness. Still, when she spoke now, her words were softer. She'd rather be nice to the woman before her and annoy him than cause a fight with both, after all.
"Yes, well, you could hardly find any gossip worth reading in that magazine anyway. If you're the sort to care, of course. As for the textbooks... well, I do suppose there is some wisdom in stocking them so close to the shopping season. But still, from what I can see, your options are still rather limited. It seems you can purchase the textbooks... or books aimed towards higher learning in the same subjects. Even your history section, which I would suppose would be the most popular among adult clients, seems a bit lacking... but I suppose you'd have it better stocked were it not so close to Summer?" Even through the attempt to be nice, she was still insistent on the fact that there was little of interest upon the shelves for anyone above school age. And not even a section on Mythology, which was actually taught at the school and one of the most interesting areas of study when one was past their Hogwarts years. Callidora would never admit it, but she was quite fond of reading ancient myths and stories... they inevitably proved more interesting than true history, after all.

                                                                      ═════════════════════════════════

Casey smiled and said unfolding her arms, "As I have said I have been out of the England for a bit. I am more familiar with readings in Spanish or Guarani, though, I spent most of my time tutoring my son and familiarizing myself with the people of the country. Finding books in English was challenging to say the least; however, I doubt the translation of popularity in book choices would carry over exactly. And, of course, the shop is a work in progress: it has only just came under my ownership."

"However," Casey said with a genuine smile, "if you have any suggestions to popular readings that I am missing I would greatly appreciate to hear where I am lacking. If I don't hear about my shop's shortcomings how else can I overcome them? Besides, I wouldn't have chose to take ownership of Flourish and Blotts if I didn't love books and was not open to talking shop with patrons."

It was interesting to Casey that Callidora chose to mostly ignore the man. He seemed far more the type to run with her social circle. Then again, from what Casey had seen of the woman and what she had said it seemed like she was the type interested in making things far from easy for men. At least seeing Callidora and Remington confirmed for Casey that she had in fact made the right choices in life. The pettiness was tiring to Casey, she would much rather focus on something that actually mattered than politics and social climbing.

Ahh, so it was this tactic, hm? His lips bristled into a tight, pursed line. She was ignoring him and rightly so (he supposed.) It was mindless chatter, the notes of songbirds, meant to block him out entirely. They didn't know who they were dealing with, did they? Or maybe they did... And that might be worse, he realized. He was brash, however, and he realized this just a moment too late. This err wouldn't be acceptable, to him nor his curiosity. How had she, the Callidora Tempest that hadn't been seen in years, been fairing after all this time apart from home. If rumor had it right, she only just returned this week, this month? Word travels fast (even in muggle bars,) he thought with a smirk, but not all of it was reliable though. And yet she'd still insulted him, a sharp turn and upturned nose, and it had wounded his pride. Black tar bubbled vengeance in his belly, deep in the pits. But she wanted to see him suffer, what woman didn't? That's why he visibly tensed, clenched his jaw and swallowed a dry lump caught in his throat, all of it for her as he turned away.

”Ladies,” he nodded softly in dismissal and then slithered deep in to the rows and rows of leather and paperbound tomes and texts. Their harmony sung in the background while deft fingers pricked the spines on the shelves until he found the right one, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. To be honest, his daughter would have preferred a doll, a toy, or a diamond instead of a book... But he certainly couldn't afford to give her a diamond after every fight, can he?

”Excuse me,” he began politely enough minutes later as they paused. He slid purposefully between each woman, book balanced between two fingers. ”I'll take this,” he locked eyes with the owner of the store, staring deep into her soul. He'd never admit it (not even to himself) but he'd always held a high regard, a special place for the brave and foolhardy. Those nobleborns who danced to the beat of their own drum. Remington had always wondered what his life would be like if he could have ever fallen in a sweet love, one with a young woman like Acacia Persephone-- he always loved that name-- Chaisty. And eyes as sweet as hers with hair as red as sin. (Circe, he could never resist a fiery haired beauty.) Someone demure, tender, warm, and strong, but caring; not dominating like he was so used to encountering all these years. The longer he stared, the farther his thoughts explored while his eyes roamed slyly up and down. But he could never relent to a life like that, hah! That meant giving up the wealth, the titles, the connections, the vanity, the envy! If he didn't have that... He didn't know what would be left...

That's when his head tilted and tawny gold eyes flickered upon Callidora on a hungry pursuit, memorizing every curve and curl, and the brand new life she's embarking. They said she'd been with her grandmother for years, after all, and where that was exactly he couldn't recall but the Tempest family never exactly discussed their internal affairs often. That never stopped his sources though, the caged eyes locked inside Moribunds knew more than she ever should. It was only luck that she'd found Calli, sheer luck. Even luckier that she'd told him where to find the Tempest daughter, but Chord and her crows and her spiders knew the advantages as well as he. If there was a secret, they could use it.

They could be rich.

”I feel I've offended you," He told Calli with a pause, internally struggling. Anybody that knew him knew he hated admitting defeat, and essentially, that's exactly what an apology was! "I must beg your pardon, it was not my intention... I, well.. you just remind me of someone I once knew.” It was wistful, fleeting and small, but the smile was sincere. Remington broke eye contact to turn his smile away, to drown it down with a strong breath and calm his heart from skipping beats before he swirled his vision back to meet hers. She wanted to see him struggle, after all.

”You must let me show you my apologies... Can I buy you a drink? A book?” Remington smirked, eyes ravaging, beseeching, begging. ”There must be some way I can make it up to you... miss...?” He paused, his haunting voice lingering in the air. He held out a hand to take hers in greeting carefully; stroke a calloused thumb against her smooth skin and lay a gentle kiss on the top of her hand, if she'd have let him. She could have anything and everything, if she wanted, and they both knew it.

And for some reason... that terrified him.

Casey raised a brow at Remington's flirting with Callidora. She sighed, the place was a bookstore not a singles bar. Then again, Remington did use the excuse of buying a book to stay. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them seemed like an odd choice... random, an excuse, but she was still enough of a Slytherin to know money was money or that was the case if it was honestly earned. Selling books was an honest earning. Besides, she would rather pay loan sooner than later.

She turned to Remington and replied calmly, "That would be 1 Gallon, 1 Sickle, 45 Knuts, sir." She was polite by nature and it was good sense to be polite to patrons.

She heard enough to continue the conversation, of course, but the focus of her attention, even without her eyes straying, was squarely on the man who was wandering the shelves. She bristled in annoyance. He was so cocky, so sure of himself. Always wearing that mask in public... but then, didn't they all? Hers perhaps was a more literal mask, of course. She kept her gaze rapt on Casey, a small smile on her lips. "Well, if you're taking suggestions... I would expand the history section, and all related ones. Mythology would be a particularly popular choice, I think. I know that my family's library shelves are stocked full of stories of the past, both real and not. Perhaps expand the magazines so that the impish housewives have something to browse while their children pick up their textbooks. The self-held section could probably also be expanded. I think it's a fairly popular topic, though I can't fathom why." Her eyes were bright, somewhat playful. She hoped that her ignoring him in favor of Casey was getting under his skin. He was the sort to crave all eyes on him, particularly those of women. That she would ignore him should annoy him to no end. She tossed her midnight locks over her shoulder, recalling with some annoyance how his eyes had lingered on the shopowner's red locks.

Her eyes glanced around the store, searching for him. But, she allowed them to linger on the decor, the shelving and lighting, under the premise that she was admiring the interior. It wasn't ugly, at least. A bookstore, certainly. She couldn't really say it was better than any other she'd ever seen, not truthfully. But then, she was hardly an interior designer, at least for stores. Homes, she knew. Homes, she could decorate, making the darkest, most dismal room look elegant. But she didn't know the first thing about a store's decor. Most were too bright for her taste, and too cluttered. Of course, that was the inventory, and the lights were to ensure that said inventory was visible, so it wasn't as though there was no reason.
"I don't recall ever seeing what the store looked like before... if I was ever here, it was when I was very young. Have you made many changes since you took over ownership? It's quite... welcoming." That was true enough. It didn't seem so cold and sterile as some shops did. She ran a hand through her hair, ruffling it a bit. The curls were new; she was used to it being perfectly straight. It was thicker, too. Beauty products could do amazing things.

When Remington returned and forced himself between the pair, she scowled. Really? As if he couldn't have simply stood where he had before and waited? Although, perhaps it was wisdom that made him so rude; she'd have been happy to continue talking to Casey and ignoring him, just to make him wait. She gave an exaggerated sigh, making her aggravation known to him, and rolled her eyes at him behind his back, for Casey's benefit. Sisterhood, right? She'd never had many female friends... if any. When he turned to her and made his apology, her eyes sharpened. She reminded him of someone? ... Well. So he didn't recognize her outright, then? That was fine. Wonderful, actually. She smiled slyly at him, her eyes cold, letting him know how little she cared for his apology. She'd gotten what she'd wanted, though. His attention.
"I'm not sure I've found a book today... perhaps I'll be back after Summer is over, when the children are back in school. As for a drink... I suppose it couldn't hurt. And... you can call me Jules." She gave a shortened version of her middle name, not her true name, knowing if she did, he'd recognize it, know who she was. She found that she rather liked the idea of his not knowing her; felt as though it gave her an advantage. She did so like to play these games...

                                                                      ═════════════════════════════════

"I'll keep your advice in mind, it is helpful," Casey Ryans said with a smile towards Callidora. "And in regards to gossip, I would say for the first month or so they'll have it just with me and the fact I am the new owner. Considering the family has disowned me I don't exactly have their financial backing."

She smirked and said, "Regardless, no, I did not make any major changes to the shop. I always loved the design as it was so I saw no need to change it. Not everything needs changed. I am glad you find the design refreshing though, as I-and my husband- did some minor updates to the shop before I started stocking."

She glanced back to Remmington and held out a hand and said with a smile, "1 Gallon, 1 Sickle, and 45 Knuts sir." She found Callidora's rolled eyes unconvincing, especially considering that she accepted the drink in the end. It seemed too insincere, like someone pretending not to like the attention of a male but secretly does.
