Near the very end of the first evening of the ball, when everything was winding down quite a bit, Juni slipped into the ballroom wrapped in a blue velvet cloak. After she'd looked around a bit, she let the hood fall back from her head. The twins did not appear to be in evidence, and though she didn't really expect they were out to get her, she wasn't in the mood to be teased tonight. She'd cobbled together a costume as best she could - she was still a little embarrased about the bodice, and kept the cloak pulled tight over it (but it was really a pretty) - but she wanted to be able to say she'd made at least one night of the ball before she went back to Colombia for the Christmas holiday in the morning. She could sleep on the plane. (( Shiny, you're welcome to join in if you want to spot Juni, but I don't know if you're around. ))

"I'm glad to see you made it after all." He offered her a careful, polite bow -- that hat required caution or it would try to escape -- and a smile. "You look very lovely," he noted, taking in her costume with obvious appreciation for her efforts, especially when he'd thought she certainly wouldn't have the time to do such a thing.

I, I wanted to celebrate a little, since, since I will be back next term now, and, and I'm over the, the cold I caught." Apparently, even Abeulita's tea wasnt proof against stress backlash and being kissed by a Hitachiin recovering from a virus. "Shiny-soleada helped me find something to wear." She tugged at the cloak where it failed to cover the bodice completely. "I trust her, her taste and, and style, but I, um, feel a little... silly. I'm, um, the Queen of the Night. From the Magic Flute ."

Kyouya had been keeping a bit of an eye on that anyway, and he had been darkly pleased to hear that the idiot teacher had been fired. He'd been unsure if that was enough to convince Juni to stay, but it seemed so. Good. "Actually, she designed mine as well," he admitted -- and was reminded that a certain rowdy third-year thought it was particularly fitting. "But I don't think you should feel silly; it suits you beautifully on all counts." Truth on his part; it was both lovely and somehow fitting for what he knew of her. A sly smile flitted across his face. "And at least you're not a princess, but rather, a queen, ne? Would the queen care for a dance with this mere advisor to the throne?" he asked, offering her a hand.

She was still not used to compliments, even if the Host Club gentlemen dropped them in her direction on a regular basis. "The Queen, she is a very strong woman. So yes, I know why, why Shiny-san picked her." She paused, considering the red velvet...concoction that Kyouya was dressed in, then smiled more genuinely. "But there is, is no 'mere' to you, Kyouya-san. You and, and Tamaki-sama, you are the best of, of how a monarch and, and advisor should work, I think." She dropped a sort of bow-curtsey, looked up, and took his hand. "And I would enjoy a dance, sí."

Was that a touch of embarrassment that got covered by the quick flash of light across Kyouya's glasses? Perhaps. "Ah, you're too kind," he said, though a sliver of that wicked smile peeked through -- a self-protecting deflection that might conceivably be blameable on his costume, and a gentle "push" away. "How do you know I'm not just using him for my own purposes?" he asked lightly, as he swept her off to the dance floor.

"How do you know I'm not just using him for my own purposes?" he asked lightly, as he swept her off to the dance floor. Juni actually was a decent dancer - no trod-upon toes, she moved lightly on her feet. She was, perhaps, a little too fond of her own lead, a little too independant for a traditional female partner, but she recovered quickly whenever she misstepped. And she clearly enjoyed dancing, as her smile only grew as the dance moved on. "Oh, but I do not," Juni agreed. "But how, how could you not be? You enjoy what you do, yes? And he enjoys being king. It would, would be dreary for both of you to, to have to do the other's part in, in your partnership, I think. You use him to be your, your monarch to be the power behind, and in return he, he gets to be a King free of, of the, ah..." She paused, missed a beat, recovered and found her vocabulary at the same time. "The small things, the details that are, are all fascinating, but not, not his grand vision." She added a spin where there really shouldn't have been one, but she made it fit, and when she came back to Kyouya's arm, she added, "It is not, not wrong to make use of, of people to do what they want to be. Not if, if they are not, um...diminished, by it." She tilted her head to one side, then looked around. Not seeing the King to illustrate her example, she had to content herself with, "Tamaki-sama, he does not seem diminished."

Her personality was reflected in her movements, just like so many others he'd danced with. The same might be said for him, as he'd allow her to lead, then subtly reassert -- a gentle tug-of-war between the two of them. He listened attentively to her, as was his usual modus operandi, but as she returned from that spin, perhaps there was more detachment in those calm grey-brown eyes than there had been previously. "Well, that was the idea," he pointed out coolly. "If he did seem diminished, then I'd have failed." He let the dance fill in two beats for him -- a carefully calculated pause. "My father ordered me to become close to him," he continued matter-of-factly. "Our families do business together on a regular basis, and they can be considered a potential competitor of ours in some fields. Maintaining good relations is simply practical."

Juni felt Kyouya pull away, rather than saw, and she had no idea quite what she'd said that had...discomfited the Host. Her expression was momentarily puzzled, and she considered apologizing but realized she had no idea what gaff she had committed to apologize for. So she let Kyouya lead, and take the conversation back, and retreated to a more polite formality. "That is, ah, convenient?" she offered tentatively. She opened her mouth to say something else, then closed it, and let Kyouya take the lead on the dance as well, in silence. Understanding the language, Juni decided, did not mean she understood what was actually being said. She'd have to think about this one.

"Convenient is one way to put it," Kyouya agreed, though his tone was very carefully neutral. He fought with a complex array of feelings on more than one matter, none of which he wanted to deal with at the moment. They got shoved into a box, lidded ... really, he should have gotten a bigger box ... and buried. He let the silence fall between them -- saying something at this moment would only be an obvious diversion, he decided -- and instead focused on the dance. It was clear after a moment that she'd shifted to letting him lead. Damn. That wasn't really what he'd wanted. What had he wanted? He wasn't sure. He let the music run through him instead, letting it wash out the tension and the prickly, defensive sensation. With his mind occupied with the physical movement, the tightness began to drain out of him, and he took care to leave her spaces to improvise, as she seemed to like that. Perhaps just being polite to a guest ... or perhaps just a shred of an unspoken apology.

Perhaps just being polite to a guest ... or perhaps just a shred of an unspoken apology. Juni considered, and then chose to improvise some of the time, and to let Kyouya take her through the more formal steps of the dance as it went - to let him lead some of the time, and to take the opportunity some of the time. But since she still didn't know what she'd said to upset him - who could she ask about that? she was not at all sure, but she was sure it wasn't going to be Tamaki - she didn't try to open the conversation back up into the conversation they'd been having before. But she didn't want to make him think he'd upset her either - he hadn't, except perhaps by not telling her what was bothering him, and if she'd learned nothing else in her firs term, it was that the Japanese only rarely came right out and said what was bothering them. So instead, she said, as the dance started to wind to its close, "Is there any of the, the estate coffee you, ah, particularly prefer, Kyouya-san? I, I expect mi tío will take me on a, a tour when I am home, and I, I would like to bring you some - some of the new roasts." She smiled - a bit tentatively to be sure, but still game to ressurect the moment, if Kyouya wanted to. If not, well, he could tell her he didn't want any, and... ...hm, that would make finding a Christmas present for him somewhat tricky. Oh well. She could ponder that on the plane.

That closed, concentrating expression on Kyouya's face seemed to lighten at the question, and there was very little hesitation in his answer. "Ah, yes. The Rio Plato," he said, though the Spanish words were heavily accented with Japanese. That particular selection was complex and almost peppery, with herbal overtones and chocolate undertones, yet still light on the palate. "I'd be delighted to try anything you brought us, though -- I've enjoyed them all so far." Kyouya apparently had been successfully diverted from whatever had been bothering him, because he immediately warmed to the subject. "And my father was impressed as well. He's not an easy man to please. I'm not always privy to his final decision-making, but it seemed like he was interested in pursuing a deal for our resorts." He wasn't sure how much further it had gone than that, though. His father rarely saw fit to tell him exactly what was going on, leaving much of it up to his own inference.

That is good news - with, with your father, I mean. If uncle mentions it, ah, I will maybe let him know." Her eyes danced. "Or, um, maybe only tell him if, if he tells me that a deal went through." The I know something you don't know, game was a favorite in the Corazon household. The music reached its last measures, and Juni sighed. "It has been a, a difficult term, but it was worth it. Thank you, Kyouya-san - you are, um, a large part of, of why it was. I, ah, know the Japanese do not say it so, so blatantly, but - I am glad I have gotten a, a chance to know you some." Juni did not for a minute believe she knew even a tenth of what Kyouya was - but what she had met, what he had let her see, she liked quite a bit. Prickly parts and all. "I hope you have a, a Christmas that, that brings you grace."

Carefully stated, quietly polite and just a touch distant ... but even so ... perhaps, if he were honest with himself, he meant that, more than just being polite. "And I hope you have a Christmas that is full of all of the comforts of home," he added. The music came to a point of stillness, and he offered her a bow. "Please have a safe trip, and I'll look forward to seeing you when you return."

Ootori_K "Part of why it was difficult?" he asked, almost too innocently -- but there was a slow, teasing smile that flickered into existence nearly immediately afterwards. "Thank you. "Please have a safe trip, and I'll look forward to seeing you when you return." Juni gave Kyouya a crooked smile that smoothed into a real one. Oh. Teasing. OK, she hadn't got the language quite so wrong as she might have. Polite and distant? Well, he was Kyouya-san - not given to glomping or giant public displays of affection like Shiny, for example. But he had gotten that horrible teacher off of her case and out of her life, and that act meant far more than any words he might conceivably say right now. Juni was perfectly content with the words. She gave him a sort of curtsey-bow as the dance finished (no skirts, after all, to curtsey with) and smiled. "I shall do my best. Thank you for the dance." And then it was time to go catch the plane to go home and see her family.
