The changing of seasons offered a new door to opportunities and possibilities for Captain Buddingtonite, and like the trees' fallen leaves that changed their colors before wilting away and crunched beneath his feet, Buddingtonite was eager to shed this heavy burden from his shoulders and be done with all of these bothersome problems. No more complications in his life, no more second guessing his actions or his motives, just do his work as a loyal officer of the Negaverse and enjoy himself in the meantime. He would learn from his mistakes and get better by them! He'd prove himself to Serpentine, to everyone, really, that Buddingtonite could get results.

All that was needed was a little patience, and the captain liked to think that he could be extremely patient at times. Give them a little something to think about and leave them coming back for seconds. May have taken some time before the results rolled in, but no doubt he'd be seeing the fruits of his labor sprouting soon. He merely hoped that the fruits would be ripe and sweet...

He wasn't sure exactly was lured him out into the streets this evening, but it didn't take him long to find a possible target for a small energy heist. An elderly couple was taking a stroll, hand in hand, commencing in idle conversation and probably talking about visits from the grand children or other pointless things that old people talked about. It almost made him a little envious to see two people well past their prime getting along so well, considering his own parents didn't even really talk to each other, but that bitterness only made it easier for him to want to sap a little of their enemy. It wasn't like they needed it.

Once some sufficient distance was set between himself and them, Buddingtonite would make his move, though the feelings of approaching Order aura made him reconsider. It would always figured one of them would interrupt his patrol, but it was also expecting. So Buddingtonite gave up the chase on his pray and focused on moving into a better position for a possible show down. He didn't want to fight tonight, not because he didn't wish harm onto another, but before it was just too troublesome. He made his way into an alley, glancing around and giving off a deceitful 'like I give a care' demeanor, all the while muttering, "Come out, come out."

It wasn't a decision that Dallol should have sat on or needed to agonize over really. But she had and it seemed as if karma was making her pay the price for it now many times over. Destiny City was huge. She had always known that, having lived here for her entire life so far. It made searching for that one Chaos aura belonging to the Negaverse Captain whom she had promised an answer to even more difficult but she would not let herself rest till she eventually located him, fuelled only by her own persistence as she powered up and took to the streets every single night.

This one, it seemed, was particularly careful although the Negaverse agent to whom it belonged to had no cause for worry since he/she was obviously stronger in comparison to the Uranus Page who was trying to track it down. It wasn't long before she too turned into the alley that Buddingtonite had relocated himself to, stopping dead in her tracks as ceruleans regarded the Captain then posed a tentative question. "Buddingtonite? Is that you..?"

The familiar voice that called out to Buddingtonite brought a warm smile to his face, and immediately his guard dropped. It was a page, and not just any page, but his Dallol. Even with the depressing turn of events in their last encounter, there was still joy erupting into Buddingtonite's heart and much of it bubbled in his deep voice as he turned to face her. "Dallol, my dear... I have not changed so much since we last met, have I?"

When was the last time they saw each other? Was he still a lieutenant? Had so much time passed and he was oblivious to it? It certainly felt that way. His tenure as a captain has been longer than that of his lieutenant, but surely it couldn't have been that long for her to forget him. He was a little hurt by the idea of it but he kept that to himself even as he approached her. "You're just as I remember. It's certainly good to see you again. I was starting to worry for you and when I worry I'm such a mess!"

Had she finally made a decision? If so, he had his communication crystal in his pocket and could easily pull it out in a jiffy, or perhaps he could dazzle her with the ability to teleport. It would exhaust him, but if it meant securing this one to their cause, he'd gladly risk it. He kept his hands to himself, despite the desire to play with her cerulean locks, and he didn't think to press the subject just yet. No need to rush and blotch everything up, right? "I hope life has been treating you well in the past few months?"

"No you haven't. But you're... stronger now." The Page saw the joy reflected in the Captain's eyes, the elation he felt when he knew that it was her and not another Knight approaching clear as a cloudless day from the tone of his voice while he addressed her. Of course it had to be him. The uniform that he donned might have changed as had the aura that identified him now as a Captain of the Negaverse but deep down he was still the same Buddingtonite who cared and watched out for her.

The Buddingtonite who had put himself between Hafwen and Mica back at the carnival so that she would be spared. The Buddingtonite who, for reasons unknown to her, ruined the first date that she had been looking forward with Darren, thereby reminding her that those associated with her would always be vulnerable and had to be protected even if it was to be at the cost of her own happiness.

"There's been ups and downs but such is life isn't it? How have you been?" She had come to terms with the fact that she would never understand what drove Buddingtonite to do what he did. She couldn't trust herself to try even since everything that Hafwen was and treasured would be at stake the moment the Negaverse Captain managed to put two and two together and realize that she and Hafwen were one and the same. This... had gone on for far too long without her taking a stand and she could not afford to delay any longer if not for her own sake then for those around her like Darren who had come so close to dying because of her.

"I've been looking for you. To give you an answer as I've promised..."

As Richard Moreau, he had been on enough bad dates to know that something was up, and there was something lingering in the air between them that warned him of a possible impending storm that was brewing. But for now, Buddingtonite was determined to keep his wits about him, preparing himself for whatever may come. "Thank you, I am glad you noticed. They promoted my Captain not too long after our last encounter. I suppose they felt that my efforts were worthy of a promotion and who was I to say otherwise?"

He made a motion to brush dirt off his shoulders though it was obvious there wasn't any, all just to show off his new uniform, and he tried to think of the best way to describe how things had been going for him. There was a lot of details he knew to keep out, such as his involvement in the Carnival, Destiny City Convention, the other little flirt that he was trying to woo over to the Negaverse's side. The destruction of Sugar Shanty and the fate of his cousin were completely out of the question- not only was the memory far too painful for him to want to talk about, but it would have certainly been a surefire way of surrendering his identity to her and that was what got him in this mess in the first place. So, all in all… what was left to tell Dallol?

"I've been doing as well as expected. Ups and downs, like a roller coaster, so I'm sure you know get drill." Ultimately he opted to give her a cookie cutter answer and just leave it at that. No need to bog her down with such troublesome problems and drag this encounter out longer than it truly needed to be. Especially since she dropped that little gem, and it took everything for him not to want to jump around like a child on Christmas morning. "I am very glad to hear that. While I understand and respect your request to think on it, I've admittedly been on pins and needles with anticipation. What have you decided, Dallol?"

Dallol smiled, genuinely happy for the Negaverse Captain's progress even though it was fundamentally wrong on her part to do so had she taken a step back and realized for herself that the promotion meant having more Chaos energy infused into his already corrupted starseed to bring about the change in him. "I suppose that congratulations are in order then. It is good to see that all the effort that you've put in for the Negaverse haven't gone unnoticed and are bearing fruit."

Falling silent, she pondered over how best she ought to break her decision to him, her heart beginning to waver again as a last ditch attempt to avoid yet another awkward situation after everything she had been through. Crossing over however meant that she would likely have to start over from scratch, she reminded herself promptly. Depending on how much she would be left with after the probable memory loss, Mercy could possibly end up all alone without her bestie. She also might not have another chance to pursue soccer on a professional level.

Essentially everything she had amassed over the years would amount to ground zero. Nothing.

She took a deep breath, letting her gaze meet the redhead's briefly before pushing forth with her answer lest she started having second thoughts about her decision again. "... I can't do it Buddingtonite. I can't toss aside everything that I've worked so hard to achieve and my friends in order to join you and the Negaverse. I'm sorry."

Part of him had suspected this would be his answer and weeks ago he wouldn't have blamed her for making such a decision. After all, it wasn't a decision that one could make lightly and the matter of losing one's memory was definitely a good determent for allowing themselves to cross over. Buddingtonite couldn't imagine himself making such a decision himself and he couldn't really blame her.

Yet…

Whether he was willing to admit to it or not, the Buddingtonite of now was nothing at all like the Buddingtonite of a few weeks ago. Things changed, as did he, and he could not hold back just how disappointed he was with her answer. He tried, forcing a smile to remain on his face, though his eyes certainly acted like a beacon to his distress, and his voice cracked for a second before he recovered it. "Hm… I see. Forgive me for prying into your affairs, but might I ask what is so much more important to you that you cannot let go when the fate of our city and its citizens' lives are at stake? What have you worked so hard for that you're unwilling to give up?"

He told himself not to be angry, or emotional, but he was never good with reigning in his emotions. Throwing out a false trail, absolutely, but he could never be the empty husk that others could project, and he pondered if letting Dallol see his anger was better than allowing her to see just much this rejection hurt him...

She saw the change in Buddingtonite's facial expression the moment she gave him her answer. "Everything. My friends, goals and aspirations. Things and experiences that have shaped me into who I am today." The Negaverse Captain was disappointed surely. That Dallol could tell from the way that he was staring at her. Almost as if he was waiting for her to inform him next that she was only pulling his leg back there.

Pausing for a bit to let what she had said slowly sink in, she took a deep breath then went on. "Take any one of them from me and I'll no longer be the same Dallol as you know me to be." She couldn't lie to him or make something up on the spot to back her decision even if she wanted to. In her mind, he deserved nothing but the truth and that was exactly what she was entrusting him with now along with the hope that he would understand her concerns and where she was coming from.

"We may be on opposing sides but that doesn't necessarily mean that we have to fight."

Rejection was an inevitable part of life, and that was a lesson that Buddingtonite had learned, long before he allowed chaos into his body, long before he was an adult or got his first self-aware boner in middle school. From a very early age, though he and his brother were spoiled, he understood what rejection was. He understood that it was going to happen at various points in one's life and how one dealt with rejection was a testament to one's character. He could be understanding to her excuses- after all, all of them were legitimate reasons to dissuade from crossing over with him. Memories and awareness of one's self, friends, family, even enemies and rivals, were very important and worth keeping, and if asked to give a single minute of his own up, he'd reconsider, though if the cause was worth it, wouldn't it be worth sacrificing those things?

Another reaction to rejection would have been crippling depression, and that would have been an acceptable response at this moment. He had spent much time and effort talking with Dallol, fighting for her, defending her to the point that he almost gave away his civilian identity to her and thus put him through that horrific ordeal at the mall. All of this time he spent trying to cultivate the perfect Negaverse officer, and in a matter of seconds, it was gone, and feeling an overwhelming sense of depression would have been an alright response.

The third was anger. Pure, unadulterated anger, caused by various thoughts jumping around his head and combining into one great menace that threatened to take over his entire body. Frustration was the key factor in all of this and was what ignited the flames he felt boiling in the pit of his stomach, and he could almost spit acid right now. Could he? He desperately wanted to, and he'd gladly overcome his 'Southern hospitality' gene to take a spit at her feet if he thought it'd happen. Of all of those emotions, it was definitely anger that made it out into the open, and he didn't bother to hide the fact that it was there, but he did try to not let her see the true depths of it.

"No, Dallol, that's exactly what it means." Buddingtonite said sharply, any hint of that caring, suave charm that usually flooded his voice turned completely acidic, and while one hand curled into a fist, the other summoned his boomerang, though it stayed in his hand for now. "So long as you remain on that side, with them, we're pretty much obligated to fight. Maybe not you, as your side is filled with nothing but a bunch of quivering little sheep, clueless to the fact that every step you take brings you one step closer to the slaughterhouse, ignoring the wolves that hide among you. But from where I stand, as the shepherd, I'm pretty much being given the okay to destroy you right now."

For a moment, Dallol just remained still and silent in the light of Buddingtonite's outburst with the words that he spoke ringing in her ears. He was upset by her final decision - that she could empathise with but she could not ignore the threat laced in his words nor the boomerang in his hand and called her ladle to hers as she took a step back to watch him warily.

"... So this is exactly what it's all about huh? Death or redemption. You will rather strike me down here and now or drag me unwilling to the nearest General-King to turn me into one of you?" There was no time to think on her part so all she did was react likewise in anger, her earlier regret and remorse momentarily forgotten as first self preservation then distrust drove her actions and words. "Is this what you want or what you were ordered to do by your superiors Buddingtonite?"

He was beyond this. Somewhere deep within the Negaverse Captain, there was a small part of him that remained untouched by the Chaos that now had a firm grip on his starseed. There was a part of her that stubbornly wanted to believe in that - that everything he had done for her prior were out of the goodness of his own heart and the budding friendship that they shared. Not because they would help him gain her trust with the eventual aim of corrupting her so that he could earn himself a darn medal from his General.

She glared at him weakly, her grip on her ladle tightening even as her hands began to tremble at the accusations that she found herself tossing his way now. "Even if it is alright to destroy us with the powers you were given, what about the ordinary civilians who stand between us then? Those who lack the power to defend themselves - how do you justify letting your youmas rip them apart and feast upon their flesh?" Lifting her free hand to rub at her nose with the back of her wrist, she sniffed a few times at the recent memory of Darren's near death experience then went on. "What gives your side the effing right to decide people's fates? Whose starseed to remove and whose to remain as they are?"

Where did he go wrong? What did he do to deserve this? Buddingtonite racked his brain, trying to think of something, anything that might have enlightened him on what he had done to ruin this chance? Had he not protected her? Had he not been good to her? What did he do wrong? Buddingtonite couldn't think of a single instance where he might have fallen short of success, but that didn't change the fact that he had failed. He kept his boomerang drawn and ready, even when she armed herself with her ladle, but he didn't lash out. Not yet. Or ever. As angry as he was with himself and her, he knew he couldn't strike against her...

"Honestly I'd rather you come to your senses and see that everything I do is for the benefit of you," Buddingtonite said with a snarl, any chance of recollecting his calm and suave composure gone. Later on, he'd regret this. He'd regret his inability to control himself and his words, but his anger was simply too fresh to even be considering hindsight right now. "I want you to come willingly. I want to be able to protect you, and I can only continue to do so when you're at my side, with the Negaverse. I don't want to have to force you to do anything- that'd be insulting to me to have to force you to join me, and wrong to you! Not everyone in the Negaverse feels that way, you know. Others believe in recruit or kill, including my superiors, mind you. If Zinkenite or Howlite felt me inadequate of talking you over, they will then expect me to kill you... does that answer your question?"

Meaning right now he was acting against orders. He couldn't bring her over- he knew that now. No amount of asking or begging would convince her now and he was once willing to respect that. Once. Now? It meant that he would have to strike her down before she got stronger, before she became a legitimate threat to the Negaverse, and as angry as he was, his hands shook at the mere thought of it. And the worst part was that he couldn't hide it...

Dallol was smart to bring up the civilians, as though she suspected it would have been a great way of disarming Buddingtonite further. And she was right to think so, as her words caused him to lower his guard. Truth of the matter was that... he wasn't sure how to respond. How to answer. Not without damning himself, or exposing his own conflict and doubts to her. Maybe he should have told her the truth. Maybe she could save him, as he thought he was tryin to save her?

Was she crying? Was she about to cry? That seemed to be the case, and now the weapon all but disappeared from his hands. It wasn't his intention to make her cry and he wasn't sure what was so damn crippling about it. His weapon may have been gone, but his anger, rage and confusion lingered, and he sneered, stepping away from her but not eager to turn his back to her yet. "Because we're the ones in power, Dallol. From what I gathered, we control this world, all except this single city... and those in power are the ones that decide the fate of its territory's inhabitants. That's how it works... I don't make the rules of war and politics. I merely follow them instead of fight them..."

"This all... is for me?" For a moment, Dallol looked as if her resolve was beginning to waver, the scathing look in her gaze dropping in intensity as she began to question the reasons driving the Negaverse Captain's actions. "Why? Why the special treatment Buddingtonite? Is it because it's me or is it just the way that you prefer to work with - winning one enemy over to your side at a time so that there'll be lesser of us standing in your way?" If he actually thought of her as a friend and did what he did because of that, surely she could try to reason out things with him and not have this end in an unfavourable manner for them both?

Pressing her lips together in a thin line, she shook her head a few times as she stood her ground, neither retreating nor approaching him for now. "I can't... I can't join you and the Negaverse after seeing what happened to those poor civilians back at the carnival. Don't you think that that's wrong? Those civilians did absolutely nothing wrong other than being at the wrong place at the wrong time and were killed or injured as a result of it. How could you follow your leaders blindly and support such a twisted cause? What on earth happened to all of your conscience?"

She knew that she wouldn't be able to lash out at him. Not now. Not ever. The summoning of her ladle to her hand was just a front to protect herself. A deterrence that she had no intention of acting on at all. She took one step then another towards him, a slightly hopeful look on her face now as she tried to grasp the sleeve of his uniform with her free hand. "You know that this all is wrong right? I don't know how but I'm sure that there is a way for you to join us and protect the innocent. It's not too late to turn around and fight the Negaverse's ways Buddingtonite. Please. I know that you're a good man..."

More than anything, she wanted to plead with him to not force her hand into fighting and possibly hurting him, the unspoken words reflected in her gaze as she tried yet another time out of sheer desperation to reach out to him. To bring him to the same side as herself as her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

Please don't make me fight you.

This was an unwinnable situation for Buddingtonite, and only now was he beginning to realize this. The only way he could have possibly have won was if he pulled out his crystal and called for a General-King or Queen and forced chaos into her starseed, and yet, his hand never made its way over to it. It would have been easy to call them in and have them deal with her… but he couldn’t. Curse everything, he just couldn’t do it. He didn’t want to force that, or any decision upon her…

“Both. Just because I want you part of our team doesn’t mean I don’t want everyone on our side… if they’d simply submit, then there’d be no need for this fighting. Problem solved! Why can’t anyone see that?” Buddingtonite said with a growl, feeling as though she had managed to corner him even when there was plenty of enough room around both of them. Distance between them remained intact for now, though now the Negaverse captain wanted to put some more distance there. Maybe that’d make him more comfortable. When she brought up the carnival, he felt himself wanting to take a step back- he actually did, managing to stop himself before he got too far, and his careful mask was cracking from every corner, much to his own dismay, and there was no amount of glue or tar that would repair it now. What could he say that wouldn’t further incriminate himself? What could he say that wouldn’t leave him exposed?

For Buddingtonite to be rendered speechless, it was a feat indeed, and the only comfort he had was the no one else besides Dallol would see this side of him. The mask was slipping, and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. “I was following orders. I did not… think…”

Hafwen was there, she was hurt. That pulled him out of his powertrip on that night and left a lasting effect, but he couldn’t tell Dallol that. Or maybe he should have? Maybe she could help him? No, she couldn’t help him, just like he couldn’t help her. He took another step back, shifting his gaze around them and looking for an excuse to leave and an exit to do so. Seriously, of all the times a youma or one of her allies could have charged in, why was there no one there to distract her NOW? At least spare him from answering these damned questions…

“Look, I don’t know when this entire situation turned around, but you’re wasting your time if you think you can lure me over to your side,” Buddingtonite said, wanting to flee but lingering behind… though he wasn’t sure why. “You can’t fight the Negaverse- they’re winning this war, and unless your side steps up, then it won’t be long before they win. I can’t… just switch sides. Just like you can’t… and I wouldn’t be too quick to judge me a good man. I did join them willingly.”

Buddingtonite? A good man? At least he had put on a good act up until now…

“Don’t waste your time on me. You’re a smart girl, Dallol… you should know that I can’t be saved. Even… if I wanted to..”

Dallol simply stood her ground, too proud to let the tears that had welled up in her eyes fall as she focused on reasoning with Buddingtonite with renewed strength. "You think that all of us wanted to put our lives on the line like this? To risk certain injury or death every time our paths crossed with someone on your side?" If only the young blue-haired Page knew what the redhead Captain was contemplating yet lacked the conviction to follow through with. Perhaps she would have left him be after giving him her answer. Put as much distance between them as possible given how easily he could overpower her and still get what he wanted should he choose to disregard her wishes.

"We are doing this because we need to. We are the only ones left standing between Chaos and the civilians who require our protection. Unlike your side, no one ordered us to do what we do." She took a step towards him then another, her arms outstretched as she offered him a small encouraging smile. "I'm not luring you over. I'm offering you a choice. A chance to be on the side that you want to." There was no autonomy to be had within the ranks of the Negaverse. It functioned pretty much like the military if Buddingtonite's words had helped to shed some light on it. They had their orders and it was either they complied or be punished.

"So what am I supposed to do then? Give up now and go make a bucket list before it's too late?" She shook her head a few times, knowing very well that she was never one to give up on anything while there was still time and a faint glimmer of hope. Just like what she saw in him right here and now as she tried to reach out to him just as he had to her. "I'm not. I'm sure that just as there are those who have been corrupted over to your side from mine, surely the converse is possible as well. We've made bad choices here and there because of what we were told. I've been there before. Remarque was there when I awakened - he was the one who told me that I was on the wrong side and to seek out the Negaverse." The Dark Mirror Eternal Senshi would have to answer to that some day, being the one who was responsible for costing her precious time and almost leading her successfully astray from the rightful path she was meant to be on.

"You can be saved Buddingtonite. Please. Let me help you..." But now was not the time for that. This now was all about Buddingtonite and her and a lot between them were at stake depending on how this conversation turned out.

She had braved a step forward, and in turn, Buddingtonite took a step back. Her gesture may have seemed harmless to her, but to him, her every word and the conviction behind them was a dagger's blade, digging deeper and deeper, chipping away at his consciousness and letting doubt flood in. He didn't want to feel guilty, or shamed, he wanted to feel angry that he had wasted his time on trying to bring her over. What was the point in guiding the sheep to the gate when they'd simply veer off the path at the last minute? But that was under the assumption that he was the shepherd dog, an assumption that was proving to wrong...

This shepherd dog's ears were too pointed, his paws too big and his teeth too sharp to be anything else besides the wolf, and now was not the time to realize this... not here, not with Dallol. Not with temptation so close to his grasp.

"Who are you to say what I want?" Buddingtonite asked her in a bitter tone, looking at that hand outstretched to him and not slapping it away, though by that expression one could tell that the notion had at least crossed his mind. At her refusal to switch sides or back down from the fight, his expression soured even more to the point that he swore his face would remain frozen this way, and it painted a disgusting picture in his mind. "What I want right now is to know that you'd be safe and the only way I could guarantee that is if you're at my side with the Negaverse. But I can't get that... life apparently isn't about getting what you want and both of us must have realized that by now. You refuse to join my side because you don't want to give up who you are? Don't you think the same could be said for me?"

If he changed sides, he would have to give up Richard Moreau. He'd have to give up his store. He'd have to give up his friends, his own family (as much as he often despised them), his dogs... all of his acquaintances, sexual or not, all would think that Richard had died, and they wouldn't have been wrong. He shook his head, rejecting her offer outright. "You can't save me, Dallol. Just as I can't save you. The only way you can help me is by avoiding ever crossing paths with me ever again... because if I keep turning a blind eye to you, the Negaverse will get suspicious, and when I'm dead, then who will protect you? Your allies? Your friends?"

Maybe someone on the other side could protect her, or maybe she could protect herself. Either way, it simply... hurt to much to want to continue this. The benefit of being Richard Moreau was that he had never really grown attached to one single person to even humor the thought of a relationship, but this was different. This... he forced himself to look away, crossing his arms and hoping she would not see the hint of tears in his crimson eyes. "So, consider this blooming relationship over..."
