Sunderland was growing festive once again. It was strange to see everyone so joyful and filled with smiles. But then, the last time she'd attempted to go out anywhere had resulted in the events that took place involving individuals who claimed to be spirits. The thought made her shiver, and not from the weather. A bump to the center of her upper back had the girl stumbling only slightly, glancing back at the pale doe who followed her.
Shaking off the feeling with a small smile for Willow, Tessa went about lighting all the candles as well as the lanterns out front.
Once outside, Willow dashed around the front, kicking up snow at Tessa. She laughed softly, shooing her Guardian away from the lanterns. "I must light them! The snow will only make them go out."
Huffing out warm breath, the doe walked over to her bonded, assisting where she could while keeping a watchful eye out for any new guests that might come visit them. It was true that the little library didn't get much attention as things began to grow cold. Everyone preferred to stay inside, or go out and eat at the tavern. Be places it was warm and inviting. Not that she felt the library wasn't warm and inviting!

A pale doe silently made her way down the snowy lane. She would have blended into the snow had it not been for the grey pelt fastened 'round her neck and the vibrant blue of her eyes - though one was dimmer than the other, a result, perhaps, of the startling scar bisecting it.
Her rider, meanwhile, was a study in contrasts - pale skin warred with hair so black it refused to reflect any light; sharp features were softened only by the fur lining his coat; brilliant green eyes seemed both alight with intelligence and as frigid as the weather. His casual perusal of his surroundings made it impossible to tell if he had come deliberately to this place or merely happened upon it.
Regardless, the pair stopped in front of the little library. Though its proprietress may wonder why. Even had he been clad in rags, the way he held himself all but screamed noble lineage. As it was, the make of his clothing was fine, indeed. If he wanted a book to read, he could surely purchase an entire library for himself! As for his Guardian, she held herself proudly and exuded a great deal of confidence. Quite the opposite of the librarian's playful thing.
The man's wandering gaze first took in the other doe, then landed on the woman. He did not seem terribly impressed by what he saw. "You are the proprietress, I presume?"

She was quite used to blocking out most of those that traveled past the library, going about their business. Even the more uncommon sight of horse and rider riding alone as the day faded to dusk much too early for her liking. However seeing another Guardian and her rider was rare, though, not something she hadn't found herself faced with. Marco, after all, had Somnium!
Willow noticed the pair first, all manner of play leaving the doe as she studied the two curiously. The paler doe received a more friendly look after a moment, though she remained beside her chosen.
Startled by a man's voice, Tessa whipped around to stare, slight surprise apparent in her gaze before she quickly shoved that away. "I beg your pardon, sir, you startled me." She apologized for the look, a much more impassive one taking its place, and maybe a hint of fear. Even to someone as socially awkward as she was, this man made her think noble. And nobles made her nervous. "And I am, yes sir." Out of nervous habit, Tessa reached out a hand to rest against Willow's shoulder.
Lanterns now lit and a potential guest standing before her, Tessa brushed the few flakes of snow off her dress before giving the man a small bow. "I am Tessa Malthodar. I can do my best to assist you, if needed. Please do come in, out of the cold." She gestured towards the doors.

Thomas pursed his lips and considered correcting the woman with the correct title. However, she had done nothing yet to garner his particular enmity and he would rather have her able to function in his presence. Knowing that he was the son of a Duke was not liable to improve her mental faculties - indeed, she seemed nervous enough as it was. Instead, he swung easily from Sigyn's back and wordlessly preceded Tessa through the door.
He removed his fine, leather gloves and pocketed them, then handed his hat to the woman who had doubtless followed him in before unbuttoning his coat and handing that to her, too.
His countenance, when he surveyed the room, reflected hunger and purpose rather than disdain for its small size - a testament, perhaps, to his appreciation of the written word. "I am searching for very specific volumes, Miss Malthodar," he informed her. "And have been told that I might find at least two or three of them here."

Willow gave her chosen a light nudge against the back as the man proceeded them up the steps. She wasn't sure what to make of this new pair, but was concerned Tessa was uneasy. Of course Tessa felt uneasy around Marco too, so maybe this was typical of her chosen. She glanced at the other doe, ears flicking forward and tail twitching in a friendly manner. Did she want to go inside as well? It was warmer inside.
Tessa barely managed to grab the hat that was suddenly in her hands as well as a coat that followed. She blinked almost owlishly at them before quietly carrying them to one of the few coat racks by the front door. Each item was carefully hung upon it before she turned to face this man. Or started to. She froze for half a beat as a little white fairy wren landed on her shoulder. A soft chirp was uttered in her ear before Paper was quiet, content to sit on Tessa's shoulder and regard the stranger from her perch.
She hesitated for a moment longer, before straightening her back and approaching the desk she dearly wished to be hiding behind. A small sign was placed near the front for anyone else that might wander in to see, stating she'd be back in a moment. "Might I... ask what volumes they are... my lord?" It had definitely dawned on her to add a more proper tittle to this man. Especially now that she wasn't so caught off guard by his presence.

Sigyn politely greeted the other doe, but seemed otherwise uninterested in making friends. She did, however, step inside once she found that there was room enough for her to move comfortably. Showing only a slight curiosity, she sniffed at the books. The mustiness caused her to snort and move to a visual perusal. She was familiar with these things. Thomas had many of them.
The bird, however, was something new. She was familiar with Gertrude, of course, but the kingshawk was much larger. She had never seen anything that tiny and fluffy before. Not up close, at least. With more interest than she had thus far shown, Sigyn sniffed at the little thing.
Thomas's eyes were already scanning the shelves as he shot off a list over his shoulder. "The Warden's Way, by Gabriel Halfast; Francis Smith's Winter Howl, preferably the second edition; A Warden's Guide, by Alviticus Hall; Beasts of the Wood, by Severus Swingling; and Frederick Knott's Spirits of Sunderland." He paused a moment, reading a title and then dismissing it, before adding, "The first edition of The Bloody War by Nathanial Kincaid would not be amiss, either."

Willow was right behind Sigyn as she entered, much more comfortable and at home inside the building. She spent so much time here with her chosen. Ears flicking forward, she watched the other doe curiously before turning to watch the man who must be Sigyn's chosen. He was interesting! But her Tessa seemed unnerved around him. Why was this? Oh! One of her tiny friends had come down! She snorted softly towards the wren, happy to see Sigyn being kind to her.
Paper Lantern tilted her head and stared at the other doe that was not her person's doe. A very soft chirp was uttered towards her before the fairy wren nibbled on a stray piece of Tessa's hair.
Reaching up to brush her fingers against the fairy wren, Tessa intently listened as the nobleman listed off a list of books he was seeking. She knew the names just as she knew almost every book they held. Such was the sad life she lived. Quietly following for a moment, she branched off to another aisle, scanning the books before pulling one down. Then moved swiftly towards another as two more books followed. "I-If my memory serves me right," she said quietly, reappearing in the section he was in with The Warden's Way, A Warden's Guide, and Spirits of Sunderland, "We have editions two and three of Winter Howl."
Letting her gaze roam along the shelves beside them, she started walking towards one of the tables set amid the aisles. Setting the books down she held, Tessa retrieved Beasts of the Wood to add to the pile. "If you can give me a few moments, my lord, I can get Winter Howl, the second edition, and check if we still have The Bloody War."

Kyrieko I...can't believe I didn't see this tag earlier! gonk This fluffy little thing seemed much more amiable than Gertrude, to be sure. Still, it seemed for the most part uninterested in Sigyn beyond a brief inspection, so the doe lowered her nose and turned her attention to the rest of the shop. She eyed the wooden floorboards and tables, the many shelves and crackling fireplace like a general surveying the land. It seemed to pass muster, for soon enough she settled into a somewhat bored waiting stance. Thomas's quick eyes drifted over row after row of books, flickering from one title to the next. Many he had read, or even owned; others he was uninterested in. Though he appreciated the volumes displayed here, his expression was not particularly warm or welcoming. In fact, as the woman placed the first stack on the little table, it might even be considered disquieting. He did not appear convinced that the books were, indeed, what he was looking for. At least, not until he picked them up and inspected them for himself. Then, his look turned sharp and hungry. Without bothering to glance up at her, he said. "I suppose it would be too much to expect you to have Beasts of the Wood, as well. But even these volumes have already exceeded my expectations for this...establishment." He opened the topmost book and began scanning through it.

Where Willow paid more attention to the strange man that was Sigyn's chosen, Paper Lantern never let her attention dwindle from the other doe. Not until she could no longer see her. Then her gaze shifted to watching the strange man. She did not like him. But she didn't dislike him either. Not yet.
Tessa moved through the aisles of books like the steady current of a river. She found the section she was seeking, scanning the books with a quick flick her her gaze. A little step stool was retrieved swiftly as she climbed up to fetch Winter's Howl. Then paused to stare in the general direction she'd left her 'guest'. Was that distaste in his tone? Or... something else? A small frown creased her brows. Had she done something wrong? Or... maybe this place was just not fit for someone of noble birth? With a small sigh and feeling a little disheartened, she moved about to pull one more book from the shelves. The Bloody War was indeed in stock.
Returning quietly to where she'd left the lord, Tessa carefully set down the last two books she had. "I-I... am afraid we do not possess that one, m'lord." She said apologetically, more as if it was her fault. "Not for some time. I have Winter's Howl, the second edition here. And The Bloody War." There was an awkward moment as she tried to determine what to do next, letting her gaze briefly take in the, admittedly, handsome lord. Not that she would ever admit to thinking such a thing! "Can I do anything else for you, my lord?" Nyx Argyros You have spotted the rare and elusive Kyrie~

Kyrieko Phaha! Poor Tessa. Scared of the handsome~ a*****e of a lord. He frowned at the woman, clearly displeased at this news, but not looking like it had surprised him overly much. He turned his gaze to the two additions to the pile. "Tea," he said absently as he sat at the little table and flipped open one of the books. His eyes scanned quickly through the tome as though he was searching for something in particular. Now and again, he paused to study something more carefully. Abruptly, he snatched another of the books and laid it out beside the first, flipping through it in much the same manner before stopping at a particular point. Then, he glanced between the to books, comparing particular points. It appeared that Thomas was content to remain in that chair for the foreseeable future, researching whatever arcane thing had been plaguing his mind until he found what he was looking for. Sigyn moved closer to the fireplace, presumably to make herself more comfortable while she waited for her chosen.

Tessa didn't bother hiding the frown this time when he requested 'tea'. As if she was his personal hand maiden or something? Or maybe that was something common that one could expect in a larger library? She gave a small sigh and nodded towards the lord. "I shall return with tea, then." Tessa said quietly, giving a small curtsy before backing away to go about the tea making business.
While Sigyn moved to closer to the fireplace, Willow's ears perked forward and she moved down one of the aisles to follow after her chosen. There wasn't much wiggle room for the guardian as she moved along, but she was light on her feet and careful where to step. But her chosen needed comforting. Of sorts at least. When she caught up to Tessa, she nosed her shoulder before rubbing her cheek along the girl's.
The gesture made Tessa smile, reaching up to pat her guardian. "Thanks." She murmured, pulling out a tea steeper and herbal mixtures she kept stocked in the back. Since the lord hadn't requested a specific tea, she kept it simple, a nice blend of pumpkin spice appropriate for the weather. It took a little while to get everything prepared, since she had to fetch fresh water from outside and then heat it up. But she didn't half-a** the job. By the time she returned to the lord with tea in hand, she also had a couple biscuits with butter and honey. These were placed out of the way of the books. "Is there anything else you need?"

She may have been displeased, but Thomas was not looking, nor was he especially liable to care. He was far too engrossed in his research. The books would be coming with him, of course, be he needed to make certain that they were what he was looking for, and there were a few things he did not wish to wait on. If only he had access to Beasts, as well.
By the time Tessa had returned, each of the books was open on the table, and he appeared to have slowed somewhat, taking his time with them. Of course, he also appeared to be reading several at once, so who could really say?
He scarcely acknowledged the tea service, though he did pick up the cup and bring it to his lips. Its scent made him pause before he drank it. Pumpkin spice. Tori's favorite.
Sigyn's ears perked as she looked at her chosen. She offered him warmth and calm - a little equilibrium before any emotions could take hold of him. Thomas blinked and drank the tea.
What was her question? Was there anything else he needed? Oh, he could think of several things. But he very much doubted that there were any she could provide. Well, perhaps there was one thing. "Can you acquire the last book?" There were other places he could go looking for it, of course. He was hardly a man without means. But it would be convenient if this librarian could manage.

It really hadn't come as any surprise to Tessa that he asked about acquiring the other book. Especially not with how intent he was reading over the current ones. She had to wonder... what was it he was looking for? There had been that other gentleman that had come looking through the books too. Marcus. He'd only wanted to learn about the land though. But the books the lord was looking through? It made a part of Tessa feel uneasy.
Willow felt it through their bond, sending a flood of warmth to her own chosen. Her ears fell slightly, a confused look crossing her face as she made her way back towards the front to find a comfortable place to relax.
"I... may be able to." Tessa said slowly. "It may take a few days, at the very least, m'lord." And most likely require her to make a small trip to retrieve it. "But I can get it." She said with a little more confidence.
There was an awkward period of silence, with Tessa biting at her lip, before she finally asked in a timid voice, "May I ask what it is you are seeking?" Maybe she could help! She doubted it, but she would certainly try.

He frowned at the passage he was reading. He really must have that book. "As soon as you can manage," he said. "You will be compensated, of course."
After long enough for him to forget she was there, the woman spoke up again. His expression, when he looked up at her, suggested that he, too, doubted she could be of much use. But that was more habit than anything. As a librarian, she may have come across texts that even he had not had the opportunity to peruse - unlikely, as he had access to much larger and older stores of knowledge than this, but possible nonetheless. Rare books did have a habit of cropping up in the strangest of places.
For a long moment, he did his best to pin her to the wall with an unwavering gaze. Would she be useful? Perhaps. Was his business any of hers? No, but it would not take so great a leap of intellect to add together the books he sought and arrive at the correct conclusion. Besides, what he wanted was no great secret.
"I am searching for a weakness in the Wolves," he replied at last. Something to exploit. Something that they were vulnerable to. Some tactic that was effective against them. Knowledge on their movements, their thought process, their patterns. Anything that could give him an advantage when next he confronted one of the beasts, for next time, he would be the victor.

Of course, she thought dryly to herself, beginning to understand what other folk meant when they spoke of nobles and their 'pride'. From what she heard, common folk disliked socializing with them. Thought them to be prudes. Tessa quickly shoved those thoughts away. It wasn't very professional of her to think that! Instead she gave a small bow of acknowledgement. "It shall be here as soon as possible, I promise." She could write the note this evening and have one of her fair wrens take it to the larger library she was familiar with. She'd spoken with some of the librarians there before and knew they wouldn't mind loaning a book to the small one she managed.
On second thought, maybe she would delay it as long as possible, just so she didn't have to see this man again so soon? The look he was certainly directing towards her made Tessa uncomfortable and the urge to look away was strong. But she didn't, afraid of seeming rude, and let his look drain a portion of the color from her skin. Until he spoke, and she took a small breath.
His response was a little bit of a surprise, but yet... not. She was familiar with the books and knew their contents. "A weakness?" It was more a statement and not a question. A frown creased her brows, but it was a thoughtful one. "Perhaps," she said slowly, "I will add a couple more books to collect with Beasts of the Wood." Nyx Argyros omg these two xD Thomas should also meet Nori~~~
