Birds of a Feather

A roleplay featuring Innocent the raven, Petra Crake, Terrowin Fouke Parzifal, and his Plague, Tiffan. The place is near the outskirts of Freykeep, in a dilapidated building that just manages to provide enough shelter from the elements to hold a meeting. The time is early evening, and the weather is harsh enough to give passersby cause to want to be indoors.

Innocent shivered as he shifted into a more human form, rubbing his arms underneath his robes. "Shyregoed," he muttered quietly, already missing his downy feathers. He hoped the sermon wouldn't be a long one. Human bodies were so very fragile and inconvenient sometimes, and as he watched his breath puff into the air, he thought that he should really make sure Petra was warm. It was so hard to relate to humans' littlest problems sometimes. He had always been embarrassed by it, even now that he was a mendicant for a faith that put Plagues first. Even if he was supposedly a superior being in the eyes of Obscuvos, he had been taught humility young.

"Petra," he called as he put on his vestements, "Please look for Plagues in the crowd."

Smoothing a tight frown off his face, he peered into the main area of the tent where some of the congregation were already gathering. "Preaching in Shyregoed makes me nervous," he admitted. "The Fellowship does not look upon Plagues or Obscuvians kindly. Therefore! We must find and guide those Grimms that we can. We could be saving their Plagues from an unpleasant fate."

He trusted Petra to do what she could. There had been reservations in his mind when he had first agreed to bring her with him, but secretly he was glad for the company, and even though he was highly unused to women, she was a very devout and sensible girl. He had come to appreciate her in the past month. It was a blessing that their paths had crossed.

"Are you ready?" he asked, fixing his robes slightly and turning back to look at her. "Do I look human enough?"

Petra's favorite part of her new apprenticeship was the traveling. All her life, she had barely even ventured out of her hometown -- and now, she was in Shyregoed of all places. Granted, she wished that Innocent had prepared her a little better. She shivered, blowing frosty breath into her cupped hands and rubbing them together in a vain attempt to stave off the cold. She had invested a small portion of her savings in purchasing a pair of gloves to cover her most vulnerable extremities, but her old cloak was thin and ill-suited for the northern climate.

Still, the things she was seeing and learning was well worth any minor or temporary discomfort. Petra called back an affirmative to Innocent's request, squinting as peered into the tent and scanned the crowd. She did not want to disappoint Innocent, but at the same time could not help but doubt her ability to fully carry out his instructions; despite traveling with Innocent for several weeks now, other than the raven Quietus she had had limited firsthand encounters with other Plagues.

Petra pulled away from her task to give Innocent a quick lookover. She smiled, trying not to let her teeth chatter. "You look just fine, Father," she said. She ducked her head briefly back into the tent. "I do not see any guests of obvious Plague descent, but perhaps they remain hidden." Innocent's nervousness made Petra feel nervous in return, and she hoped that this sermon would pass quickly without incident.

Among the people trickling through the doors came another, much smaller figure. Tiffan had taken an impressive leap off of Terrowin's shoulder moments earlier and had quickly ran towards the small enclosure. She had not, of course, told Terrowin where she was going, so it took him a few minutes to catch up to her. He timidly walked in after a few wind-blown travelers, lurking close to the entrance as he scanned the shelter for any sign of the tiny, red Plague. Despite his wariness of his surroundings, he nevertheless found himself relaxing slightly once he was out of the wind.

Tiffan had smelled something on the wind as they passed the makeshift tent, a smell that she was starting to recognize around her more and more. The scent of death drew her into the tent and among the crowd, trying to find the source of it.The only problem with that plan, though, was her size. Boots did not make for a very informative view of people, and the slowly growing size of the crowd made searching it that much harder to see what was around her. But ever so slowly she made her way to the front, an occasional flash of red in a mostly drab crowd.

Despite her efforts to disguise her discomfort, Innocent looked at Petra guiltily. "Oh dear," he remarked, noticing her shiver, "As soon as possible, we must find you a cloak."

He paused and sniffed for a moment, then glanced around at the congregation again more urgently. "I do smell death amongst our congregation, though. If I'm not mistaken, there is either a Plague amongst us, or someone has the pestilence, themselves." Trying not to alarm his charge, he added, "It's likely a Plague. In humans, the pestilence is very difficult to disguise."

He took a deep breath and said, "If you find them, try to convince them to stay until after the sermon, but do not let the other congregants see. If this Plague does not want to be seen, then it would be rude to reveal it to others, and with my disguised form, they might be reluctant to approach us themselves."

He stepped into the congregation and began the sermon, scanning the crowd quietly. He was fully human-looking for once, which took great focus (and lots of the eyeballs of local fauna), but in Shyregoed, and with a child in his care, he did not want to risk unnecessary hostility.

"Blessings be upon this congregation," he began, and launched into his sermon.

Petra wished that she could pay more attention to Innocent's sermon, but she needed to concentrate on the task given to her. And after all, she'd heard it many times before. Unsure exactly of what to look for, Petra searched the heads of the crowds for strange eyes, strange smiles, anything. A couple members of the congregation were fully fledged Obscuvians with bird masks hiding their faces, so there was nothing she could do about that.

So intent was she on searching the top of the crowd, Petra almost missed the flash of red in the corner of her eye. She blinked; where had that come from? And there it was again, several feet away from where the first sighting had been. With sudden realization, Petra directed her gaze downward.

As the red thing made its way to the front of the crowd, Petra was able to see it clearer. The red was apparently a cloak, swathed around an individual much smaller than anyone else around it. Petra wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but in any case it most definitely was not human. As Innocent paused between sentences, Petra nudged his elbow to catch his attention. Discreetly, she indicated with her eyes the position of the little red creature.

Terrowin settled down with a sigh in the back of the crowd, arms crossed loosely over his chest as he listened to the sermon. He had overheard bits and pieces of Obscuvan sermons over the past few years, though he had never listened to one from start to finish. He occasionally scanned the crowd for any glimpses of Tiffan, and was comforted by the occasional glimpse of bright red moving through the crowd.

Tiffan, meanwhile, was getting more and more confused by the second. She knew that there was a Plague here, she just wasn't able to find them for the life of her. She was reaching the edge of the crowd and there was still no sign of who she was looking for. She paused behind the leg of someone in the front row of the crowd, peeking out around their boot to see what was ahead of her. There was a sizable gap between the crowd and the man talking, one that offered no cover if she wanted to cross it. And want to she did, for the smell seemed to be coming from the area the preacher and the girl were in. She hopped from foot to foot impatiently, though she stayed in place, hoping to get a chance to see whoever it was once the sermon was over.

The convenient thing about quietus eyes was that nobody could tell what direction you were looking in so long as you didn't move your head. Fully human, Innocent had to make a concerted effort to remind himself that he had eyes at the moment and adjust his gaze only slightly when Petra elbowed him. He cleared his throat and shifted his tone slightly in his preaching.

"Thus the faithful servants of Obscuvos must watch the most vulnerable in the flock, so as to ensure that they are not led astray."

Hopefully Petra would understand and keep an eye on the excito. If it got cold feet and left, they would miss a valuable opportunity to provide aid, one that might not come again.

His gaze went back to rest on the Plague several times during the sermon. She was easy enough to spot, bright as she was, and as red as the robes of a monk, but her Grimm was a different matter. It was impossible to tell who might approach them with her at the end of the sermon, if anyone at all, so Innocent rushed trhough his already-short sermon. It wasn't wise to linger over lessons in Shyregoed anyway, not when those lessons were Obscuvian. Telling the congregation the time and place of the next sermon, he dealt with the few humans who remained to speak to him, blessing some and agreeing to pray for loved ones for others, then turned his attention back to whoever remained.

THE TREND CONTINUES SO MUCH SORRY SUBO ;o;

Petra perhaps didn't fully understand the pointed message behind Innocent's speech, but she was smart enough to figure out the situation on her own. If the red Plague decided to run after the sermon's conclusion, her size made certain that finding her again would be more difficult than convenient. It didn't seem to have a Grimm, either, which was odd. Perhaps this was one of the stunteds that Innocent had told her about?

Her task was made harder that she didn't know much about this new Plague -- its fears, its desires, its motivations. It was quite possible that too much attention would even chase it away, so she didn't want to stare outright at the little Plague. Still, she wanted some way to demonstrate that she was on its side. What better way to do so than with a smile?

As Innocent wrapped up his sermon, Petra kept the corner of her eye fixed on the red Plague, praying that it would not move toward the exit.

To be honest, Tiffan wasn't paying Petra or the sermon much attention. Innocent's words flowed past her like water as she continue to wind her way through the audience, as most of her attention was on the crowd and the people nearest to her. However, the sermon was soon over, and she found her cover quickly vanishing as the people began to leave. She felt a brief moment of panic as the last person she was hiding under turned to go, possibly leaving her exposed in the middle of an open space. A frenzied dash kept her comfortably underneath the voluminous cloak of the Obscuvan until they left the shelter.

A handful of people still remained by that point, and the small red Plague approached a man who was idly standing by the exit who she apparently knew, for a moment later she scurried up his leg, disappearing briefly only to reappear at his shoulder. After a brief whispered conversation, the man bent down to scoop up the packs he had set down by his feet, clearly intent on leaving once he had gotten all of his possessions situated.
