The celebration of Lenaia is something of a mystery today. In one form or another the celebration does seem to focus on rebirth and renewal. In some depictions of the festival Dionysus is killed by a Cyclops, and the Maenads (female 'wild women' who followed Dionysus) revive him. In other interpretations the god of Wine is killed by the Maenads themselves for cheating them. In either case Dionysus is reborn as a babe and spring soon returns to the land - along with all it's bounty of fruit and grapes for the creation of more of the Aethenians most favored and revered drink.
