Nevermore huffed and counted her hemlock roots again. Four, five, six, yes there were some missing. She always kept 10 hemlock roots in this jar. Agitated, she slams her ingredient box's lid. Someone was digging into her stuff, repeatedly. It wasn't like she could put a lock on the collection of shoe boxes that held all the stuff she gathered up. The filly had enough. Taking a smudge stick, she wrote a little symbol on the boxes that were more commonly taken from. She was gonna catch the thief red hoofed.

It was some time later that a shadow slunk into Nev's room and went straight for shoe boxes. Perhaps if he'd had a chance to study properly or hadn't been in such a rush to get in and out, he might have noticed the little symbol now gracing the supply boxes. But Noble was in a hurry to take what he needed before Nevermore returned and he quickly cast aside the lid, reaching in for another one of those lovely roots. The colt knew that his sister would surely have been happy to share if he had just asked, but that would involve a conversation about his very non-princely proclivity to the dark side and he wasn't quite ready for that.

Nev had been waiting under Wisp's bed for the stealer of stuff to come and steal more stuff. Unfortunately, she ended up waiting a very long time and in the darkness of the room and the comfort of the rug under her sister's bed the filly had fallen sound asleep. Once the lid had been tossed aside, the tiny hex on the the box activated. The dust from the dry smudge wafted from being disturbed, entering the airway of the thief, making their nose burn like someone shoved pepper directly into their nostrils.

Noble took a breath of the dust and knew instantly that he had made a big mistake. "Aaah!" He stumbled back, nose burning and eyes streaming. "Tu es stultior quam asinus." Tossing in a few latin curses, he sat back heavily and rubbed at his nose.

Nevermore's eye popped open. Yes, the trap was sprung! She darted out from under Wisp's bed, tackling the intruder to the floor. "Ha! Gotcha you..." she blinked. "Noble..?" She used her wings to fan away some of the smudge dust so it wouldn't continue choking her brother. "What in the world are you doing in my hemlock roots? You know they don't make good tea or anything right...?"

Noble didn't even see Nevermore before he was suddenly taken down by her tackle. Eventually he was able to breathe again and he uttered a simple and miserable, "ouch." He sat up and wiped away the rest of the dust and tears. "Was that last bit really necessary?" He asked with a sigh. Should he even bother trying to explain his way out of this one? "And I am quite aware of that. They do however make a fine potion that induces nightmares."

"Yes...it does..." Nev said slowly, giving her brother a clean handkerchief and using her wings to dust off the other boxes least they be triggered and suffocate someone. "I didn't know you knew that however. Is that what you've been taking them for..? And that was latin wasn't it? You study strange things for claiming to be all princely..."Not that Nevermore was exactly out about her darker proclivities...

"I have never," Noble said after a moments silence, "called that you study strange." But she was right. He did his best to hold onto his princely air, making sure nothing he ever said or did could be taken badly. It was more amusing knowing you could destroy someone and they would never even know it was you. Noble wiped away the last of the dust and tears. "Well, perhaps we have more in common than you first thought. And trust me when I say this is no mere fad. I am serious in my preference for the dark arts, but I did not want anyone to find out. Not yet anyway." It felt good to share his secret with somebody.

Nevermore let her brother up. "Sorry...I didn't mean it like that exactly...it's just, you know.." She knew he knew, it wasn't necessary to finish the thought. The pegasus busied herself a little, righting spilled jars from the jostle and separating white baby breath blossoms from white mistletoe berries and putting them into their proper jars. "Oh..was that a secret..?" she looks at her brother genuinely puzzled. "Or did you just decide recently, because I've known for awhile." She dropped a berry into the jar. "About you that is."

Noble stared at his sister and then gave a wry chuckle. "Either I have to work harder on my acting skills or," he gave her an adoring smile, "there is nothing that can be hidden from a true sibling." He moved to help her clean the mess he had made. "We will share our secrets and protect each other."

"You mean share my ingredients.." she teased him gently. "Really you should have just asked, I would have shared with you without hesitation." she though about it while putting the last things away. "But I should also show you were I get and grow things. That way you can help keep stock high and I won't have to spend whole days weeding."She was quiet for a moment. "We can't tell mom and dad or Wisp you know..it has to be between us." She wasn't sure what their parents would think, but it most likely wouldn't be good. And she really didn't want Wisp to be afraid of or dislike her own siblings.

"I would like that," Noble said with a smile, imaging sharing spells and special concoction. Together there was nothing they couldn't do. He nodded. "I know. This is just for us." Noble had always known they wouldn't understand. As long as he had his way, all the world would see was a princely cover and not was what was underneath. "We have to protect Wisp." She was sweet one, the one with a good heart. If anyone ever hurt her, they would have to deal with the darkness of her two siblings.

The filly nodded. "Then we will protect each other and our family, the only ones who can understand us." Nev pulled out the smudge stick she'd used earlier and drew on her right hoof several symbols and old writing. She grabbed Nobel's hoof and drew the same, altering a couple of them. "I swear to protect from family from harm that anyone tries, cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye." She drew an X shape over her heart which left a visible black mark and then brought her hoof to her eye, one of the black letters smudging off near the corner of it. She extended her hoof out to Nobel, waiting for him to do the same.

Noble took the smudge stick with a proud smile. He had never felt happier then the moment he drew the X across his heart and marked his eye, copying her words and then adding his own at the end. "I swear to protect my family from harm that anyone tries, cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye. Blood to blood, bound in promise never undone."

Nev blinked and looked impressed. "I think I need to borrow whatever it is you're reading.." She high hoofed Noble and the black smudges on both foals vanished when their hooves clicked. "The promise is sealed." She chirped happily. Putting the stick away, she said knowingly "So do you feel better now? Not as alone right..?"
